Claude was down for many – here's everything we know
If you couldn't get a conversation going with the AI tool, you weren't alone
While Anthropic Claude's own status page took a bit to confirm an issue, the popular AI chatbot was having some issues this morning, lasting for a bit over an hour. Whether it was providing an error before you type in a prompt or simply not answering, Claude was having some problems.
Reports on Down Detector – a site that tracks outages based on user reports – for Claude spiked to over 2,000 at around 10:29 AM ET. In my free Claude account on desktop, I'm seeing a "This isn't working right now" message, while my colleagues are getting a similar message or simply can't sign in.
Claude eventually confirmed an issue with 'elevated error' rates at 11:06 AM ET and said the team was looking into it, and then confirmed that the issue was resolved at 11:49 AM ET. Simultaneously, there was an issue with signing in and authenticating into Claude Code, but that's since been resolved.
You can see ahead of time our live reporting on Claude's downtime this morning, but it seems the AI chatbot is back for most users as of now. We've also reached out to Anthropic to ask what caused the issues today.
To kick things off here is a look at Down Detector as of 10:40AM ET showing over 2,400 reports of issues with Claude.
I'm on a free account, as well as a few of my colleagues, and Claude simply isn't answering prompts. I'm seeing an error message, "This isn't working right now," that suggests I try again, and this is appearing on both desktop and mobile.
And here's a look at this error message. I'm seeing this appear when I open a new chat with Claude on desktop, but also after I send a prompt through. Let us know in the comments below if you're having issues with Claude.
Claude confirms an 'elevated errors' issue is happening
Shortly after the 11 AM ET hour, Claude has updated its status page to note that it is currently 'investigating' the issue causing 'elevated errors' with the platform. There's no time for mitigation or recovery as of yet, but the teams at Anthropic are on it.
It appears that Claude might be recovering a bit, as while still slow to respond – taking close to a minute rather than a few seconds for a relatively easy prompt – I was able to get a response from Anthropic's popular AI chatbot. I'm using the Sonnet 4.5 model here.
Similarly, reports on Down Detector are starting to level off, with about 2,250 in the United States for Claude as of 11:05AM ET.
Claude confirms a separate issue with signing-in
Sometimes lightning strikes twice, as Claude has confirmed a separate issue aside from 'elevate error rates', as some folks are also experiencing trouble signing into the platform itself.
The full bulletin reads: "We are currently investigating an issue affecting Claude Code authentication. Users may encounter errors when attempting to sign in or authenticate their Claude Code sessions." It was posted at 11:22 AM ET, and I can confirm that I did have issues signing in to Claude, as did a few of my colleagues.
There's still no update on elevated errors when using Claude, but Anthropic has a fix for authenticating with the platform. As of 11:29 AM ET – just minutes ago – Claude says a fix has been rolled out:
"The issue has been identified and a fix is being implemented," this hopefully means that if you haven't been able to sign in or authenticate into Claude Code, you'll be back in shortly.
Claude says the elevated errors issue is 'resolved'
As of 11:49AM ET, Claude says the issue causing 'elevated error' rates with the AI chatbot is resolved. That's good news and means that Claude should be operating normal or closer to it shortly whether you're on desktop or mobile and regardless if you're a paid or free subscriber.
That means the issues impacting Claude lasted for about an hour and 20 minutes since we started seeing Down Detector reports spike, and by Anthropic's timeline it lasted for roughly 40 minutes ... well at least since it confirmed the 'elevated error' rates.
I'm back and able to have conversations with Claude, albeit every few are a bit slower moving, but let us know in the comments below if it's back for you. Additionally, reports on Down Detector as of 11:36 AM ET are under 300 reports.
