Refresh

OpenAI confirms issue resolved

According to OpenAI's server status, "This is now mitigated and we keep monitoring."

If you were experiencing issues, I'd suggest refreshing the app or web browser and trying again, it looks like everything should now be working smoothly.

Things are getting better...

It looks like things are improving, with Downdetector now showcasing far less issues, users who couldn't use ChatGPT no longer experiencing problems, and readers no longer reaching out.

The next update on this blog will be when OpenAI confirm on the status page that issues have been fully resolved, but until then it looks like ChatGPT is back up and running!

Back in business? Maybe for some

Remember Paul from earlier? Well, looks like a refresh has fixed ChatGPT on his web browser.

One user on Reddit is claiming Adblock might be the issue, although I'm not convinced that these ChatGPT problems are only impacting those of us who are trying to skip past adverts.

While some people are seeing improvements, the ChatGPT subreddit is flooded with users experiencing issues, and it doesn't seem to be slowing down either.

Hopefully not another 10 hour outage...

The last time we reported a ChatGPT outage problems persisted for over 10 hours.

I'm hopeful this time OpenAI will resolve the issue sooner rather than later, especially considering the company has already identified the root cause.

Readers from The Netherlands, and Newcastle, UK, have reached out experiencing issues with lost chat responses, while another reader said they've even tried using ChatGPT on Perplexity Pro and it just won't work.

How has the ChatGPT outage affected your day so far? Let me know by sending an email to my email at the top of this page!

Try the ChatGPT app

Paul from Manchester says "ChatGPT is down on my desktop, with all responses missing.

But when I logged onto the ChatGPT app on my iPad everything is there. All my history…

More than that – the question I asked on the desktop has been answered on the iPad, but remains blank on the desktop."

Maybe it's worth trying the app if you're experiencing issues on web... Let me know if this works!

Root cause identified

OpenAI has now announced that it has "identified the root cause and the company is working to resolve it."

Stay tuned for further updates... We might be out of the woods very shortly.

ChatGPT's self awareness

What happens when you ask ChatGPT if it's aware of its own server issues? Well, it uses ChatGPT Search and gives you direct information from the OpenAI Server Status page.

I'm lucky to be one of the people not experiencing any issues at all, and while OpenAI says ChatGPT is 99.36% up, there's still lots of people having problems across the globe.

Tim from Denmark just reached out to say he's also experiencing issues with ChatGPT using ChatGPT 5 mini. While it's responding fine, all of his chats have disappeared...

Issues prior to going down

Before ChatGPT went down there were plenty of users online reporting annoyances with the chatbot responding to questions with deep concern for user's personal safety and mental health.

Obviously if this works correctly then it's a great addition to ChatGPT, considering the tragedies we've seen in the news the last few weeks. That said, it appears like ChatGPT was using its safety feature for users purely seeking responses to everyday questions.

These issues started around 20 hours ago, and while they might not be linked to the current ChatGPT outage, it could be a precursor to the main cause of the current issues.

Have your chat responses now disappeared?

I reported this earlier, but it appears to be an issue affecting lots of people across the internet. For many, their ChatGPT responses have just disappeared from their chats, and that's a concerning problem for those who rely on AI for specific tasks.

I'm yet to see this issue myself, but it looks like many people are experiencing this issue. Issues appear to be impacting users outside of Europe and the UK too, with one reader from India reaching out to let us know that ChatGPT is simply not working at all.

The outage begun just over an hour ago, let's see how long it takes to fix...

An update from OpenAI

ChatGPT down

OpenAI has just posted as of Wed, 3 Sept 2025, 09:50 AM BST / 04:50 AM EST / 01:50 AM PST that it is investing the "root cause" of the ChatGPT outage.

A very vague update, but at least we know they are working on it. For users in Europe and the UK, unfortunately the start of your work day might have been impacted by this down time, but here's hoping our friends across the Atlantic will wake up to a fully functioning AI chatbot.

Watch this space.

Some chats completely deleted?

We're seeing reports of users experiencing issues with ChatGPT chat history, which could be incredibly concerning for some.

According to this Reddit user, "all of the responses in every chat and project they've ever used have disappeared. It's the same in 5 and any Legacy models."

TechRadar team experiencing issues with ChatGPT

I asked the rest of the TechRadar team if they were having issues with ChatGPT and the results have been fairly mixed.

For some, on Free accounts, it works absolutely fine, responding in a matter of seconds as you'd expect.

For others, however, it doesn't work while logged in, while logged out, on desktop, on smartphone, anywhere.

Could the issue be related to areas rather than specific users?

Reddit users experiencing issues

On Reddit, users are reporting issues with ChatGPT flat out not responding to messages and it appears to be impacting quite a lot of users.

Personally, my ChatGPT Plus account is working absolutely fine on Mac and in the iPhone app, but we've seen issues like this in the past which affect some users, but not all.

I've asked my TechRadar colleagues to test the OpenAI services too, awaiting response...

Not displaying reponses

OpenAI has reported it is investigating the issue, claiming ChatGPT is "Not Displaying Responses."

Currently, there are appears to be 23 affected components, so we'll monitor to see how long these issues appear on OpenAI's official server status page.

Remember we'll be reporting live throughout this outage, so keep a tab open and check back regularly to see when ChatGPT is back working properly again.

Downdetector

Starting around 9 AM BST / 1 AM PST / 4 AM EST, users started to experience widespread outages related to ChatGPT.

This coincided with a large spike of reports on Downdetector, hinting at a potential issue with OpenAI's servers.
