As an expert on NBN plans and deals, it's my job to break down what really matters when choosing an internet plan, and for me, there are three key factors to consider. Those are: your preferred speed tier, how many devices you have and how you use the internet.
Choosing an NBN speed tier is the most important aspect for Aussie households, and the major providers generally offer eight speeds to select from. Ranging from 'Basic I' at 12Mbps to 'Hyperfast' at 2Gbps, the most popular single tier in Aussie homes is 50Mbps, although there are now just as many premises on faster plans (those over 100Mbps, per the ACCC), which in no small part is due to some big changes to pricing and speed that NBN Co rolled out last September.
Given how radically the latter has changed the NBN landscape, it’s worth re-assessing whether your current plan offers the best value for your needs — there’s a good chance you could be overpaying for megabits you don’t need, or conversely, find that you can get a significantly faster service for only a small increase in your monthly bill.

Choosing the right speed tier
Sitting one rung above the ‘basic’ NBN 12 tier is NBN 25, which offers 25Mbps downloads and up to 10Mbps uploads. NBN 25 is a great fit for smaller households (such as singles, couples or seniors) or just those with a tighter budget; it provides enough speed for daily internet use such as web browsing, email, social media, video calls and streaming HD video on a few devices at the same time, and you might be surprised that it will even support multiplayer online gaming (though note that it’ll likely take a while to download big new games or updates) and the most creature of comforts in 2026 — 4K streaming.
Yes, you read that right — NBN 25 can even support Ultra HD resolution streaming, but it comes with a minor catch: it only generally provides enough bandwidth to stream 4K to one device at a time. While doing so, you may find it even impacts some of those basic internet uses we discussed above, such as YouTube streaming or video calls.
NBN 25 is also not a speed tier I’d recommend if there are any console or PC gamers in your household — unless you don’t mind waiting for hours and hours for games to install or update.

If NBN 25 doesn't quite meet your home’s speed needs — you may have a larger family of four or more, all running multiple devices — you’ll want to consider a faster NBN tier.
In my opinion, the next sweet spot when it comes to plan value is NBN 500 which, as the name suggests, offers a massive speed boost over NBN 25, and more than enough bandwidth for most Aussie homes.
NBN Co only introduced NBN 500 late last year and its intention is to offer an unbeatable mix of speed and price. The new tier effectively replaces NBN 100 for homes with a fibre or HFC connection, offering a 5x speed boost for the same price to providers. What makes NBN 500 so compelling is that it often only costs marginally more than NBN 50 (it’s just AU$5 more per month from Dodo, for example) despite being 10 times faster.
What do those numbers mean in practical terms? 500Mbps is enough speed for even high-demand Australian households, including bandwidth-intensive activities such as downloading and installing games and 4K streaming on multiple screens. Moreover, the extra wiggle room means even those data-hungry activities shouldn’t impact other day-to-day uses, like making video calls and scrolling social media.
If you have any avid gamers in your household, you'll find that the extra speed means downloading and installing new games or large patches will complete much faster on NBN 500 when compared to slower tiers.
