Co-Pilot Live is now available from the App Store, priced at £26

ALK has announced its Co-Pilot Live turn-by-turn sat-nav software for the iPhone, an early version of which we got hands on with back at CES in January.

The news follows on from this week's announcement of TomTom's £113 app and cradle combo and NNG Global Services' iGO My way iPhone app. Co-Pilot Live also joins Navigon on the App Store (which costs £53 for the British Isles version).

However, ALK says its UK app will be available for £26 with full address and UK postcode support, undercutting Navigon by over half.

A European version version of Co-Pilot is available for £60. Lane assistance is also included, so you can always be sure you're in the right lane for combination junctions while there are also realistic signpost displays and speed limit alerts. CoPilot can also download additional information such as weather via its Live services.

Like the 250MB Navigon app, all the Co-Pilot apps are stored on the iPhone (though we're not yet sure how much space the Co-Pilot app will take up on your handset). And, as with that app, no traffic is currently available, but it will follow at a later date.

We'll have a full review of the Co-Pilot app as soon as we get hold of it.

3. Personally i think this is a masterstroke by ALK. I used CoPilot & on my previous 2 mobile phones, both WinMo6.0 and it ran fantastically well, the routing was very good the screen updated quickly. The only time i remember it letting me down was around the Marble Arch area in London with so many lanes of traffic. I expect the new lane assist will help with this though. I've been waiting for ALK to develop thier CoPilot software for other mobile platforms since i picked up my newest phone, an HTC Magic. When i saw the price on the Andoid Marketplace i couldn't belive it! Full UK maps for £25! I've been using it for around a month now and can say that on Android the CoPilot software also performs very well. Whilst it appears TomTom and Navigon have been a little bit greedy i expect ALK CoPilot will be a big success on both Android and iPhone due to the lower price. Of course TomTom and Navigon have thier own PNDs to protect, if they price too low then there seems little point in stumping up the extra cash for the dedicated PND, i don't believe ALK has this problem being software only? :-)

2. On the other hand, I had CoPilot 6 on my O2 XDA Orbit 2 years ago and it was horrible. The device couldn't cope with the speed the screen updated, the mapping was poor and often sent me the wrong way and the speed camera bong went off even though the camera had been removed 2-3 years earlier.

1. I've had CoPilot on my Windows Mobile phone for some time - it's been very good, so if you're a iphone gentleperson it's a good option
