Optus mobile plans are seriously compelling, often hitting the sweet spot between data, cost and coverage. However, the telco has recently increased the price of its plans for new customers, with plans starting at AU$45 for 20GB.

The price increase sees each plan now coming with more data, and in most cases, the monthly data cap has doubled. Other perks such as an Optus Sport subscription sweeten the deal, and Optus has a growing 5G network that’s giving Telstra a run for its money.

We’ll be laying out the best plans to suit different needs right here, so no matter what you need, we’ve got you covered. Click the links below to skip ahead to our plan recommendations:

Noteworthy Optus deals

We’re running through our picks for the best Optus phone plans below, but before we get to that, the telco has some sweet deals on high-data plans you should know about:

Best Optus mobile plans: our picks

Best SIM-only option

Optus Medium plan | 80GB data | AU$55p/m

Optus Medium plan | 80GB data | AU$55p/m

If you already have a phone, and you’re not keen on starting up a new mobile contract, then a SIM-only plan is a great alternative. It still comes with most the perks of a contract, including unlimited talk and text to standard numbers in Australia and unlimited standard talk and text to selected countries. You’ll also get access to Optus Sport, and you can cancel anytime without facing a fee.

Total minimum cost is AU$55

iPhone 13 (128GB) | 80GB data | 24 months | AU$111.19p/m

Vodafone’s iPhone 13 plans may be a little cheaper, but we would argue that this AU$55 Medium plan from Optus offers better value for money. It’ll set you up with a solid 80GB of data, and the Optus 5G network that promises to be well-placed to handle the increased demand that this 5G-ready phone could potentially bring. All told, pay AU$111.19 a month for this Apple flagship.

If you’re eager to get your hands on the very best of what Samsung has to offer, you’ll want to check out the S21 Ultra. We think the AU$55 Medium plan will suit most users, as it comes with 80GB of data to burn through and 5G access. And with this 5G-enabled phone, you’ll want to go with a telco that is continuing to roll out its 5G network. If the S21 Ultra is too large (or too expensive) for you, our second pick is the Samsung Galaxy S21.

If you’re keen on Apple’s most affordable handset – the 2020 reimagining of the iPhone SE – we recommend pairing it with the AU$55 Medium plan on a 24-month contract. You can get the monthly cost down to AU$73.29 by opting for the Small 20GB plan, though you’ll have significantly less data each month. Our recommended plan gets you 80GB of data, unlimited standard national talk and text and Optus Sport.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE (128GB) | 80GB data | 24 months | AU$92.44p/m

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE (128GB) | 80GB data | 24 months | AU$92.44p/m

The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE brings the headline features of the regular S20 to a lower price point. We’d suggest pairing the device with the AU$55 Medium plan on a 24-month contract, as this’ll get you 80GB for AU$92.44 a month. This is the 5G version of the phone too, so you’ll be able to use Optus’ growing 5G network. If you’d like an even cheaper deal, you could move to the AU$45 Small plan, though it only comes with 20GB of data.

Optus has introduced a killer high-data plan to go along with the launch of the iPhone 13 range, so if you want a premium plan to pair with the iPhone 13 Pro Max, we’d suggest going for the AU$65 Optus Plus plan. It’ll set you up with 500GB a month, and its price is the same you’d pay to get 200GB of data from the telco. You’ll also get unlimited talk and text to standard numbers in Australia, Optus Sport and access to an expanding 5G network.
