TL;DR

  • Bitdefender provides a robust level of anti-malware and anti-phishing protection for teens on their phones, and the company topped the rankings in an independent mobile security review for 2025 in this respect, with all this core protection happening seamlessly in the background
  • Bitdefender Scam Protection Pro boasts defenses to help foil scammers across popular messaging apps on phones, and also in text messages, plus Bitdefender has an AI chatbot that can help with questions teens may have about anything they suspect could be a scam
  • Bitdefender also offers parental controls that can be applied with a lighter touch, easy cross-device management for all your family's devices, and a VPN to give teenagers extra security when online via public Wi-Fi in the likes of cafés

If you have teenagers, you'll realize the importance of striking a balance between trust and security. While you obviously want to keep teens safe from the more perilous aspects of the online world – not to mention the downright dangerous ones – at the same time, you can't watch their every move, or run the risk of souring the relationship with your children due to an over-the-top level of monitoring of their devices.

Thankfully, a solution is at hand in the form of Bitdefender Total Security Family and Bitdefender Premium Security Family plans. These plans cover multiple family members and devices – up to 25 of the latter, and this includes PCs as well as phones – and they offer features to help keep teens safe without straying into overly invasive territory when it comes to policing their devices.

This article will show seven ways in which Bitdefender can help provide a balanced level of protection for the smartphones of your teenage children, keeping them safe while not being intrusive.

1. Top-rated core malware protection

Bitdefender's family plans provide core defenses against all the various strains of malware out there, helping to keep teens safe on this fundamental level thanks to its strong protection for mobiles (as well as PCs, too).

Of course, every antivirus and security suite on the market combats malware, but Bitdefender stands out due to the high-quality nature of the protection provided, as rated by the independent test labs who evaluate and compare all these products.

AV Comparatives' mobile security review for 2025 (for Android devices) placed Bitdefender at the top of the rankings as the only app to score a full 100% protection rate, with no false positives either (meaning detections that turn out not to be malware after all).

So, should a teen decide to download an app outside of an official store which packs something unfortunate in the way of malware, Bitdefender will be on hand to catch it, operating invisibly as a watchful eye in the background in real-time.

2. Web protection and tight defenses against phishing scams

Phishing is one of the most prevalent online attacks, and Bitdefender has strong anti-phishing tech built into its mobile app (and desktop software) which will step in to block any dodgy links a teenager might errantly click.

Wherever your teen travels on the web on their Android mobile, Bitdefender will scan web pages and block any phishing or other threats in real-time (using behavioural analysis to spot new threats, too).

Those subscribed to a Bitdefender Premium Security Family plan also get Bitdefender Scam Protection Pro, an AI-powered platform that gathers multiple anti-scam features under one umbrella. This means that if a teenager gets a message on WhatsApp or Discord (or other popular messaging services), Bitdefender checks any links for phishing scams, blocking these automatically. That could be a phishing sting to get them to log in to a fake website that promises free (or discounted) Fortnite currency (V-Bucks), for example, which in reality is an attempt to extract their payment details.

3. Broader scam detection

Bitdefender Scam Protection Pro also provides broader protection on mobiles for teens and other family members, keeping them safe from a whole gamut of potential scams.

That includes Bitdefender checking SMS texts for any scam-related links or other threats, and even app notifications are vetted for scams on Android phones. With iOS smartphones, Calendar Invites Protection is present to keep a teen from clicking on suspicious links in calendar events.

Again, all of this happens without any fuss in the background, without proving detrimental to device performance or interrupting the teenager's experience with their phone – not unless a dodgy link has to be blocked, of course.

4. A trusted AI advisor for teens to consult

Scamio Pro is another key part of the Scam Protection Pro service with the Bitdefender Premium Security Family plan, and it's an AI bot that teens can chat with on their own terms if they're unsure whether something might be a scam.

It's a sad fact that some scams are getting much more sophisticated, and younger teens especially may be prone to fall for them – particularly if they use deepfake videos, for example, to make them more convincing. Recently, we've seen a rise in AI-manipulated videos of celebrities which are based on real interviews and publicly available footage of those stars. These are used to run scams on TikTok or other social media platforms, using the likes of fake 'reward programs' to lure in the unsuspecting, and they could easily fool some teenagers (or some adults for that matter).

With Scamio Pro, the teen has an independent chatbot with which they can query the legitimacy of any post or message. Bitdefender's AI is trained to recognize common scam scenarios, and a teenager can even provide a screenshot of a video for Scamio Pro to analyze and determine whether it's faked.

It's a really useful anti-scam tool, and as a trustworthy AI advisor, teens may be more comfortable asking Scamio Pro about topics that they might avoid raising with you (like spending yet more money on Fortnite or Roblox). It'll doubtless be comforting to know they can get advice from Bitdefender's security-focused AI which is specifically engineered to guard against all manner of scams.

5. Parental controls applied with care

Bitdefender Total Security and Bitdefender Premium Security Family plans boast parental controls which can be configured to have a lighter touch while still helping to keep teens safe online.

You can use the parental controls to set up blocks on specific types of inappropriate or dangerous content, for example, gambling or adult content sites. (As opposed to blanket-banning huge swathes of the web, as you'd rightly do with a youngster – in the case of an older child, that may feel stifling and overly authoritarian, potentially prompting a rebellion). Just don't forget to have conversations with your teenagers about why any banned content is unsuitable. Sensibly agreed time limits can also be enforced such as no internet past bedtime.

Bitdefender also allows you to view a report of your teen's internet usage for the past week (or month). Rather than constant monitoring – and again that danger of strict surveillance provoking rebellion – keeping an eye on that broad overview periodically will alert you to problems such as your teen spending too much time on social media sites. That can again lead to conversations which are more constructive about, say, healthy screen-time habits, avoiding a more accusatory approach that's unlikely to be well-received.

6. Bitdefender Central for easy cross-device management

No matter how many devices your family has, teenagers included, it's easy to manage them all in an unintrusive manner with Bitdefender Central.

Bitdefender's family subscriptions are cross-platform, with up to 25 devices covered in total (for up to five family members). These can be Android or iOS mobiles, or Windows or macOS PCs, and any combination of those therein.

If you think juggling all that hardware is going to be tricky to deal with, thankfully it isn't, as Bitdefender provides a hub that allows you to manage the features installed on each device. Bitdefender Central provides visibility into the threats which have been blocked on the devices of teens (and other family members), and it flags up potential security issues with their hardware that you can then swiftly fix.

7. A bundled VPN for extra security

A VPN is a great way to ensure teens are even more secure when online, and Bitdefender provides full VPN functionality with the Bitdefender Premium Security Family plan (you get a limited version with the Bitdefender Total Security Family plan).

This service works across all platforms including Android and iOS smartphones as well as Macs and Windows PCs. If you set up the VPN on your teenager's phone – it can be installed and managed via the Bitdefender Central hub mentioned above – it'll run silently in the background, protecting their online privacy automatically and without any fuss. A VPN ensures a teen remains anonymous online, and safe from becoming a victim to hackers who look to exploit the unwary when they're using public Wi-Fi.

It's peace of mind for you to know that if your teenager is using their phone at a local fast-food joint, café, or library, they won't fall prey to having their data intercepted and compromised, because a VPN encrypts the data being sent online, making it useless to the hacker.

Unlimited VPN traffic (with Bitdefender Premium Security Family plan) ensures that coverage never runs out for your family, no matter how much data they might get through when streaming or gaming.
