Is Sony’s True RGB panel tech good for sports? Here’s how it stacks up when it comes to brightness, colour, motion and more
Sport can be a surprisingly demanding task for TVs, even for today’s best flagships. Sony’s Bravia 7 II and Bravia 9 II are more than up to the challenge
We’ve hit peak sports season in Australia — the AFL season is approaching its finals climax, the NRL grand final takes place in October, the English Premier League has just kicked off and we’re into the second half of the Formula 1 calendar, to name just a few.
If you’re thinking of upgrading your TV to make the most of the sporting action, Sony’s new True RGB TVs deliver performance worthy of the biggest sporting occasions, with unprecedented levels of colour volume that can make the pitch, court or trackside feel closer than ever. Combined with high panel brightness to help combat daytime glare (and improve viewing conditions when most sporting events take place) and expert motion handling to help keep the action vivid and easy to see, even in brighter viewing environments, the Bravia 7 II and Bravia 9 II flagships excel when it comes to watching sports.
Sony True RGB TVs produce more accurate and detailed colours than OLED and regular LED screens
One of the biggest advantages Sony’s True RGB has over other panel technologies (such as OLED and traditional Mini-LED) is the intricacy of its colour control capabilities, which result in significantly increased colour volume and accuracy. Because True RGB employs thousands of tiny RGB LED packages, each using independent red, green and blue diodes, controlled by an intelligent RGB Backlight Master Pro engine, they can inherently produce more vibrant and accurate colours, rather than relying on a blue or white backlight (as found in most traditional LED types) whose light is converted and filtered further up the panel stack.
The result is far more granular control over colours, so when you’re watching sports being played on a green field, for example, the RGB backlight system is able to reproduce subtler differences between the greens encoded in the broadcast.
The practical result for sport is that True RGB can help avoid issues like artificially uniform neon grass or jerseys with overly aggressive unnatural colours. Instead, there’s more headroom to reproduce subtle tonal differences: the varied greens in a football pitch, the contrast between a team’s shirt and shorts, or the fine sponsor and livery details on a Formula 1 car. Sony claims its True RGB TVs can achieve up to four times the colour volume of OLED, though the exact result will naturally depend on the quality of the broadcast and your chosen picture mode.
Sony True RGB TVs are impressively bright, making them ideal for daytime sports watching
Because the RGB LEDs in Sony’s Bravia 7 II and Bravia 9 II are the panel’s actual light source, they allow the screen to deliver incredible brightness, even during daytime hours. Sony says the Bravia 9 II flagship is capable of hitting 4,000 nits brightness. We’ve been able to measure it for ourselves, and we recorded a figure of 3,990 nits in a 10% HDR window, putting its measured peak output effectively in line with Sony’s claim.
What's perhaps more impressive is the high level of full-screen brightness made possible by Sony's True RGB technology. Again, we've been able to measure the Bravia 9 II, and we recorded a figure 827 nits — around double the figure we recorded on a 2026 flagship OLED TV. It's this level of full-screen brightness that creates the biggest impact, and what sets Sony True RGB TVs apart.
Such a high level of brightness has multiple benefits when watching sport. It can give HDR broadcasts more impact — whether it’s sun glinting off a racing car, a floodlit stadium hosting a night-time NRL match, or a bright white tennis kit, they can all look convincingly intense while retaining colour and texture.
Second, it helps the picture maintain contrast and colour impact in a bright room. Whether you have bright daytime sunlight coming in through windows, or you watch with overhead lights switched on — conditions that can interfere with the visuals on TVs with dimmer screens — the brightness of Sony’s True RGB backlighting helps ensure you never miss any of the action.
The Bravia 9 II takes things even further when it comes to minimising outside influences on the screen’s visuals, with an anti-reflective layer called Immersive Black Screen Pro that comes on all sizes except the largest 115-inch model. This proprietary tech works by absorbing ambient light from windows and room lights, effectively combatting reflections without sacrificing picture quality.
The Sony Bravia 7 II and 9 II deliver smooth motion when watching sports
Motion handling is another area where a TV needs to perform at its best if it’s going to be deemed a great option for watching sport. From fast-moving cars to quick pans following soccer players sprinting with a ball to tennis balls speedily flying over a net, a TV needs to have a solid grasp of high-speed objects to keep them in focus.
Both the Bravia 7 II and Bravia 9 II ranges use 120Hz True RGB panels combined with Sony’s XR Motion Clarity processing for handling fast motion. Sony says XR Motion Clarity analyses movement across several frames and synchronises the backlight with the on-screen action, helping to keep fast-moving objects clear and bright. In practical terms, it’s designed to reduce the blur that can soften fine detail during fast camera pans or rapid movement of elements or items on screen — both of which are major elements in most broadcast sports.

Not every live or on-demand sports stream arrives in pristine 4K. Many are delivered at lower resolutions or carry compression artefacts caused by limited bitrates. To combat this, Sony’s True RGB sets use an upgraded XR Processor and the company’s proprietary XR Clear Image processing to identify and reduce noise while restoring detail and even upscaling lower-resolution material to match the panel’s 4K resolution, resulting in sharper images for sports broadcasts.
How do the sound systems on Sony True RGB TVs handle sports?
Audio matters for sports too, of course. The sound of a stadium, the roar of a race-car engine, crowd noise and even commentary all contribute to the atmosphere and excitement of sporting events. Sony True RGB TVs are engineered to deliver an immersive sound experience, with both the Bravia 9 II and Bravia 7 II integrating the company’s Acoustic Multi-Audio+ feature, whereby positional sound is delivered to you from the screen itself — and allowing the TV’s speaker systems to track objects far more accurately (please note this feature isn't available on the 50-inch and 55-inch Bravia 7 II).
As the flagship, the Sony Bravia 9 II goes even further with a Dolby Atmos speaker system, with twice as many individual drivers as the Bravia 7 II, including dedicated upward-firing speakers for added height effects. Plus, 3D Surround Upscaling technology can upmix stereo sports soundtracks for an even more immersive experience.
