Can a robot enrich your life? It's not really surprising that the most popular home robots right now are the ones that perform specific tasks you can't really be bothered with: cleaning your floors or mowing your lawn. But while it's undoubtedly nice to be able to offload chores to a machine, there are other, more subtle ways in which a robot could improve your everyday life. That may be starting to change. OlloBot is bringing its latest generation of AI companions to IFA 2026 in Berlin from 4-8 September, giving visitors the chance to see both the OlloNi SS1 and L1 in person at Booth H1.2-174. The showcase offers a closer look at how the company is trying to move companion robotics beyond novelty and toward something designed to build a lasting place in everyday family life.
The trouble with AI companions — and why we need them more than ever
The idea of a robot companion is nothing new. We've seen them in movies, and in recent years there have been any number of attempts at launching AI companion robots that never quite hit the mark, from basic cyber-pets whose novelty soon wears off through to more promising electronic buddies that prove to be unintuitive to use and which rely on you initiating interaction.
This is a real shame. While there's clearly a demand for robots that perform specific tasks, there are also lots of people in the world who would welcome a machine that can provide softer benefits, such as companionship and emotional support. According to the World Health Organisation, around one in six people worldwide, across all age groups, experience social isolation and loneliness.
Building a better companion robot
The big challenge in addressing this need is that there's a wide spectrum of people who would benefit from a truly effective AI companion — for example, older adults living alone, only children with no siblings to play with, parents whose children have grown up and left home, or younger adults who have moved away from home and are missing a family connection.
Creating a home AI companion that's sophisticated enough to address the needs of such a large variety of people, straightforward enough for anyone to use from day one, and capable of feeling like a genuinely warm and supportive presence, is a serious ask.

A cyber-pet that feels like a supportive friend
From the moment you activate the OlloNi SS1, it starts learning about you and your family (and even your pets), building a picture of the family as a whole and the relationships between everyone, and it develops its own personality through observations of interactions and habits. Ultimately, no two SS1s will be the same, as they'll all grow differently according to their home environment.
By understanding its family, the OlloNi SS1 is able to tell how you're feeling. Basically if you're feeling down, the SS1 will notice and actively respond with comfort and engagement. It features a 2+1 multi-screen design, with a pair of circular screens acting as emotionally expressive eyes, and a main screen for interaction and displaying information, all of which enable it to communicate intuitively; one look will tell you its mood.
Beyond that, while the OlloNi SS1 doesn’t speak human language, its voice can convey a whole range of emotions so it feels in sync with your own moods. Its movement, too, is natural rather than robotic, further contributing to the impression that the SS1 is a living companion that can really feel your presence, rather than a piece of well-programmed technology.
Other life-enhancing features include real-time video and voice calls, as well as remote video remote calls, in which the Olloni SS1 can track you around the home and keep you in frame wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, so that the person on the other end of the call feels more like they’re there with you. And an AI-powered capture system means the OlloNi SS1 can automatically detect and record meaningful family moments — with your permission, of course.
The privacy elephant in the room
Naturally, many people will be rightly concerned about what happens to all the data that this adorable AI companion is collecting 24/7. OlloBot is upfront about privacy, however: it promises that the SS1 processes all data locally and grants users full control over their data, and that all visual materials will be stored solely within the household.
Need an extra physical layer of privacy? The SS1's camera system comes with a privacy shutter, so it won't see anything you don't want it to.
There's an additional benefit to data being processed locally: everything the OlloNi SS1 learns, its entire personality, is stored on a removable Heart Memory Module. And that means that in years to come, as hardware ages and technology advances, the memories and emotional bond that your Olloni SS1 has built up over the years will never fade away, and ultimately your OlloNi need never become obsolete; instead its entire personality can be transplanted into a new body, so it will always be around for you.
Are companion robots the answer to loneliness?
Loneliness is a big societal problem, and nobody’s saying that AI companion robots are a cure-all. However for many people, having a friendly presence in the home that’s proactive, and able to create an emotional bond, could make a very big difference to their quality of life.
