iOS 10 is available for everyone to download right now. The update will roll out in waves, though, so if you've not got it just yet, don't panic, it should appear on your iPhone or iPad soon.
Apple released the iOS update at 10:00 PDT on Tuesday September 13 (13:00 ET, 18:00 BST, 03:00 Wednesday September 14 AEST), so you'll likely see the update appear now or soon after.
Update: The public beta of iOS 10.1 has been released, which includes bug fixes and a few new features. If you want to try out the absolute latest version of iOS 10, then skip to the 'How to sign up to the iOS 10.1 beta program' section at the bottom of this guide.
To download and install iOS 10, you should see a message that an update is available. Before you begin you should make sure you back up your iPhone or iPad first.
Some owners of iPhones and iPads have encountered problems with iOS 10. Thankfully these are relatively rare, and Apple is hard at work fixing any bugs, but if you do encounter any issues after upgrading, make sure you check out our iOS 10 problems: Here's how to fix the most common issues guide.
Next, make sure your device is plugged into a power supply, and that you're connected to a Wi-Fi network - as the download will be pretty big!
Open up the Settings app of your device and tap on 'General' then 'Software Update'. The iOS 10 update should then appear, and all you need to do is tap 'Download and Install'.
You can also choose to download the update later on when you're not using your device, as the iOS 10 update and installation process will make your iPhone or iPad unusable for a short while. Tap 'Install Tonight' or 'Remind Me Later' to install iOS 10 at a more convenient time.
If you select 'Install Tonight' just plug in your iPhone or iPad into the power supply before you go to bed, and by the time you wake up iOS 10 will be ready and waiting for you.
Download and install iOS 10 from iTunes
You can also download and install iOS 10 through iTunes, which is a good choice if you do not have a reliable wireless connection.
To update to iOS 10 through iTunes, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your PC or Mac. Now connect your device to your computer and iTunes should open automatically.
With iTunes open, select your device then click 'Summary' then 'Check for Update'.
The iOS 10 update should appear. When it does click 'Download and Update'.
Can't wait find the update? How to download iOS 10 right now
If you can't find the iOS 10 update, then Apple released the final release candidate of iOS 10 last week, which you can download right now.
The final release candidate is pretty much the final version of iOS 10, and it's been released early so that users can report any last minute problems before the final version of iOS 10 gets released to the public. It includes a new keyboard sound, an Accessibility option to implement Touch ID as it appeared in iOS 9, haptic feedback when locking the iPhone and a number of bugs and fixes.
Even though it's the final release candidate, it's still and early version of iOS 10, which means that there could be bugs and other problems that (hopefully) won't be in the final version. However, most of the bugs and problems should hopefully have been caught and fixed during the beta releases of iOS 10, which have been running during the past few months.
So, the iOS 10 final release candidate won't be for everyone – and if you're concerned about any bugs creeping through and playing havoc with your iPhone, we recommend waiting for the final release of iOS 10.
Update: iOS 10 is now available to download and should be available for everyone some time today.
If you've got a Mac as well, then you can download macOS Sierra final release candidate right now, which is the latest operating system for desktop Apple devices, and has been designed to work exceptionally well with iOS 10.
