Wales vs Croatia: match preview

Wales might have begun qualifying in positive fashion after securing a last-gasp equaliser away in Croatia but losses away to Turkey and at home to Armenia have left them second bottom of Group D. With only the top two teams securing a place at Euro 2024, manager Rob Page will be stressing the importance of gaining a positive result in Cardiff.

Six points behind top of the table Turkey, Wales warmed-up for Sunday’s crucial encounter with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Gibraltar on Wednesday. Kieffer Moore impressed with two goals, while 20-year-old midfielder Charlie Savage caught the eye on his full senior debut and could be in contention to start once again.

Since drawing with the Dragons in March, Croatia came agonisingly close to winning their first every piece of major silverware when they lost on penalties to Spain in the Nations League final and won their next three group games. However, they suffered a shock defeat at home to Turkey on Thursday night and now find themselves second in the group.

Turkey were able to find a way to nullify the likes of Luka Modric, Petar Musa and Josip Brekalo, something that Wales will be hoping to emulate. It will certainly be a challenge for the Welsh but they are entering the game after securing back-to-back wins for the first time in more than two years.

Line-ups

Wales: Ward; Mepham, Rodon, B. Davies; Roberts, Ampadu, J. James, Williams; Wilson, Brooks, Moore.

Subs: Hennessey, King, Lockyer, Low, Poole, Levitt, Sheehan, Savage, D. James, Cullen, Broadhead, Bradshaw.

Croatia: Livakovic; Juranovic, Vida, Gvardiol, Barisic; Modric, Brozovic, Kovacic; Majer, Brekalo, Musa.
