Sunday 7 September sees Google Inc reach its 10th birthday and in celebration of the occasion TechRadar is running the Google Week where we'll bring you new insights into this ubiquitous search engine every day this week.

We kick off with a quiz - before Google, you no doubt used one or more of these search engines. Some are long-forgotten while others struggle on. How many can you name?

1. Third one down is Altavista: the object lesson in how to mismanage a once-great web property.

Pre-Google, everyone used to rave about the accuracy of its search, Babelfish, mail forwarding and so on. But then they lost it.

Not only did they ditch their simple and intuitive search interface and turn the site into yet another tedious portal, but after luring me in by promising me free email for life, they closed my account shortly afterwards. They deserved the stuffing they got.

An important lesson to Google, who have learned from Altavista's mistakes.
