Google Fiber adds 3D TV channels with 3net, ESPN3D
Google Gigabit + TV Plan subscribers still need a 3D TV, glasses
Google Fiber subscribers can now enjoy watching 3D TV channels in addition to the 209 other 2D channels that are part of the Google Gigabit + TV Plan package.
Starting this week, ESPN3D and 3net are being piped into Google Fiber homes in Kansas City, Kan. and Kansas City, Mo., where the experimental broadband service is currently available.
Of course, to enjoy these channels in the third dimension, the lucky residents with Google Fiber will still need all of the usual 3D equipment.
“Our Google Fiber TV customers (who own 3D glasses and a 3D-capable TV) will now be able to watch 3D programming right in their living room,” said Google Head of Product Management Larry Yang in a blog post.
New Google Fiber channels
The Google Gigabit + TV Plan package has 3net for free as part of its $120 price, while ESPN3D is considered an “add-on” and costs an additional $5 a month.
“[3net has] an extensive library of original 3D programming,” described Yang.
Its programming consists of “natural history, documentary, action/adventure, kids and family, lifestyle and cuisine, concerts, movies, scripted series and more.”

Google Fiber in 2013
Even though many consider 3D dead and think 3D glasses hurt 3D TV, Yang said that Google is “committed to making these qualities that you’ve come to expect from Google Fiber TV better and better.”
“Thanks to the amazing capacity of Fiber, we can also include some new experiences and tools that will make watching TV even cooler. For example, 3D channels.”
Just the fact that the service is carrying 3D channels less than a year after launching puts Google Fiber on par vs cable companies.
Google vs cable companies
Cable companies haven't been able to roll out affordable gigabit internet services, which isn't helping the FCC goal of having gigabit internet in every state by 2015.
Google Fiber in 2013 could further challenge cable companies, as Google is looking where to go next with its broadband service that is 100 times faster than what most Americans have today.
“Fiber TV comes with a comprehensive selection of channels, a Storage Box that you can fill with 500 hours of HD recordings, and a growing VOD library,” said Yang.
“When you turn on your Google Fiber TV, you should be able to kick back and relax with all of the TV programming that you love.”
