Not content with hammering pre-sale records, Modern Warfare 2 has broken all sales records to achieve the best opening day sales for a game ever – selling 1.2 million copies in just 24 hours.
Backed by an extensive advertising campaign and the sort of word of mouth that only Apple can aspire to, Activision have produced a sure-fire hit in Modern Warfare 2, a game that is selling copies as fast as blockbuster movies sell tickets.
Price war
Back in April 2008, GTA IV set a new record of one-day sales bringing in – according to MCV – 609,000 sales. Modern Warfare 2 in the same time frame sold 1.2 million.
While the amount of money the launch has brought in hasn't been revealed, when GTA IV sold 926,000 units in its first five days on sale it took in around £40 million in the UK. Worldwide, this figure was more like $500 million.
One of the big reasons the game has sold so well has been put down to a supermarket price war. With the likes of Sainsbury's selling the title at a cut-price £26 (RRP is £59.99) many gamers have picked up a bit of a bargain.

3. PS3 and XBox gamers will love it even if the multiplayer games are a bit short. Xbox players will be use to paying for playing on line,PS3 players had better get ready as they will be in the near future as for PC users or at least for most of them, this is the end of the Call of Duty reign. Its too restrictive, too short on the single player and for modders and hardcore players a knife between the shoulder blades. The extra eyecandy and story line will not make up for the lack of clan match ability. Eventually everyone will wake up and see the game for what it is, a money making gimmick railroaded to every gamer on a steam train of advertising tricks. When all the dust has settled, probably in less than a year, it will be residing on every players done shelf. You will of course have the enevitable gold rush for the add ons or DLC but that will be short lived too. I live in hope that other publishers like Dice won't follow IW's example and deliver Battlefield Bad Company 2 with dedicated server files and other new games with the same support.Although, sad to say this seams to be a new trend with Codemasters doing the same with Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising. If it is, does it spell the end of PC gaming? Let's hope not !
