I need a separate controller for my custom Steam Machine PC, but the Steam Controller is out of reach — so this is the best alternative that I recommend
Best controller I've ever used, period
Valve's Steam Controller is currently in high demand, with PC users desperate to get hands-on one ahead of the Steam Machine's launch. However, with stock running dry and scalpers snatching units, Valve has consequently introduced a reservation queue system for purchase.
There's no harm in patiently waiting for that reservation email — after all, the Steam Controller is easily one of the best PC controllers available. However, what if I told you there was an alternative option that's arguably as good (if not better) than the Steam Controller?
In comes the 8BitDo Ultimate 2, not only compatible on PC, but also Android and the Nintendo Switch 2. It may not have as long a battery life as the Steam Controller, nor does it have the trackpads that are handy for navigation on SteamOS, but it certainly makes up for it in ergonomics and connectivity.
I'm fortunate enough to have two custom gaming PCs, with one running Bazzite (a SteamOS clone), but I'd like to dedicate a new controller to each system, and there's no better time than now to do so.
Unlike the Steam Controller, which costs $99, the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 is a very affordable option, available at retailers for $59.99 (or slightly more at some online retailers).
The 8BitDo Ultimate 2 controller is one of the best PC controllers available on the market, at an affordable price point, providing great comfort and accessibility across Windows, Linux, Android, and the Nintendo Switch 2.
However, Memorial Day sales are well underway, which means the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 is available on Amazon for $57.99 (was $69.99), thanks to a 17% discount.
It's the best controller I've used in terms of comfort, and it has enough extra features (notably back buttons and additional bumpers) to help the controller serve as a worthy competitor to the Steam Controller — and frankly, a better option to the PS5's DualSense Wireless Controller and the Xbox Wireless Controller for PC gaming.
Better yet, it's so much more convenient for me and anyone else with a dual-PC and Switch 2 dock setup via the included 2.4GHz dongle, and that's why two of these controllers are a great move.
I've still got my eyes peeled for the Steam Controller, especially considering some of its more funny features via the controller's haptics (producing custom sounds), but until the high demand plummets, the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 seems like the ideal solution.
