  1. Bryston BP26/3B-SST review

    Bryston BP26/3B-SST review

    10

For a number of reasons, Bryston is one of those names that tends to be mentioned with a certain amount of awe. One of these is the sheer power of its amplifiers (this one’s a bit of a baby, the 28B-SST being good for 1,000 watts). But the look of the products also has something to do with it.

    Audiolab 8000AP/8000X7 review

    8

OK, we admit it: this is the joker in the pack. Not, however, that either we or Audiolab are having a laugh. We just thought it would be interesting to find out whether an AV-oriented, multichannel, pre/power combination can cut it when playing music in the company of dedicated stereo-only kit.

    Russ Andrews SP-1 Loudspeaker review

    10

Russ Andrews has realised that the most cost-effective way to get a product to market is to take someone else’s kit and tweak the sound to personal taste. Russ did this with Stello electronics when he produced a range of desktop electronics and he’s done it again with Focal, in order to supply an equally compact speaker to match.

    System Fidelity SA-300SE review

    System Fidelity SA-300SE review

    6

The System Fidelity SA-300SE integrated amplifier is currently the range-topper, beneath which are the 250-series amp, tuner and CD player, various loudspeakers (including subwoofers) and a DVD receiver. Across the board, simple down-to-earth value is emphasised alongside a sound quality which clearly aspires to rival the best that established names in this country (like Cambridge Audio, Rotel, Marantz etc.) can offer.

    Marantz SR8002 review

    Marantz SR8002 review

    8

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, Marantz took the whole THX concept to heart. The technology has since been widely implemented on its AV amplifiers and receivers down the years, even as some other AVR brands appeared to lose interest in the philosophy, with the SR8002 the latest to boast certification, this time in the form of THX Select2.

    Arcam FMJ A38 review

    Arcam FMJ A38 review

    10

Arcam is undoubtedly one of the greatest British hi-fi companies of all time. With a commanding range of CD players, amps and AV equipment, we all know someone who has benefited from its expertise over the years. Part of its charm too, is its affordability.

    Arcam FMJ C31 / FMJ P38 review

    8

Along with its new top-of-the-range integrated amp, the A38, Arcam has introduced a new stereo power amplifier to replace the P35 of yore. It’s not a vast change and, indeed, from the outside you’d have trouble distinguishing a P38 from a P35, but there are a few nips and tucks under the hood.

    Yamaha DSP-AX761 review

    Yamaha DSP-AX761 review

    8

Yamaha has crammed the DSP-AX761 full of features and DSP modes and added some cool innovations of its own. It looks slick with its titanium livery and trademark orange display. This is a 7.1 channel amp, but there are two additional front channels for an extra pair of 'front effects' speakers, powered by proprietary DSP processing. It trumps 7.1 with a soundfield designed to fill larger roo

    NAD C355BEE review

    NAD C355BEE review

    8

NAD’s amplifiers have, in recent years, fulfilled most peoples’ expectations as good, honest, no-nonsense workhorses, with a good and reliable performance record. And there’s no reason why the new C355BEE should be any different, retaining, as it does, some of the best ingredients of the company’s well-loved C352 model.

    Denon AVR-3805 review

    10

Since its launch earlier this year, Denon's AVR-3805 has been the amplifier by which all others are judged. It is jam-packed with features that were the stuff of dreams a couple of years ago...

    Yamaha DSP-AX759SE review

    8

Yamaha's DSP-AX759SE has a lot to live up to: its predecessor bagged a Gold Award in our Awards Issue last year. Even a cursory look over the new unit reveals that Yamaha is working on an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy

    Edgar TP105VR review

    8

Although Eastern European brands are growing in number, to the best of our knowledge, Edgar is the only hi-fi company that designs and builds its products in Slovakia. Edgar produces a small but distinctive range of valve-powered components

    AMR AM-77 review

    AMR AM-77 review

    10

You wouldn't guess from looking at AMR's products that the company was started by a bunch of guys who were smitten by the sound of single-ended triode amplifiers, specifically those running 300B output valves

    Primare I21 review

    Primare I21 review

    8

Considering its price, this amp is very high-end in appearance. Primare has the knack of classy visual design, and it's all so efficiently done, too - a plain steel tray for the base, back and sides, with an aluminium front panel added

    Cambridge Audio Azur 740A review

    Cambridge Audio Azur 740A review

    8

Cambridge Audio must have seen the £500 price point as a hole that needed filling. Hence the Azur 740 series, which comprises a CD player and this 740A integrated amplifier. And as far as hole-filling jobs go, this is a pretty good effort indeed

    Unison Research Preludio review

    Unison Research Preludio review

    8

We've seen quite a few products from Unison over the years and the family likeness is not hard to find. That classic Italian love of medium-dark hardwood, for a start, and the proud way in which the valves stand alone. Like many other Unison Research products, this is a single-ended amplifier, using just one valve for the output stage of each channel.

    Marantz PM7001 KI review

    Marantz PM7001 KI review

    8

With the basic PM7001 (£350) firmly established as one of the key amps to beat below £500, the KI version has quite some reputation to live up to. As usual with Marantz's 'Ken Ishiwata Signature' range, the basis is the same set of circuits

Icon Audio Stereo 60 Mk 2 review

Icon Audio Stereo 60 Mk 2 review

    8

Based in Leicester, Icon is a small valve-amp specialist with quite a variety of models in its line-up, including headphone and phono units. This new model is moderately bulky and quite weighty, thanks to the transformers which are well specified for the rated 60W maximum output.

    Audio Aero Prima review

    Audio Aero Prima review

    8

Audio who? It was a new one on us too, but it turns out the firm is ten years old and based in Toulouse, France - which explains the odd 'Aéro' spelling. Its range isn't vast, with just three amplifiers and three CD players, this being the cheapest amp

    Copland CTA405 review

    Copland CTA405 review

    8

Very much the elder statesman in present company, Copland is one of a handful of companies worldwide who've been making valve amps pretty much since their resurgence following the technology's near-abandonment in the 1970s.

    Cambridge Audio Azur 840A review

    Cambridge Audio Azur 840A review

    8

This is a lot of amplifier for the money. It's big and heavy and impressively filled with functional bits, and it houses some genuinely novel technology. The heart of the 840A is a vast mains transformer, surrounded by heatsinks

The Thor 4-Way HDMI Selector lets you route up to four HDMI-equipped sources to a single HDMI input - very useful as most TVs still only offer a single HDMI socket.
