Our Verdict

RingCentral Meetings has all the tools you need for an awesome video meeting. However, it’s not clear that this platform is a vast improvement over Zoom, which provides the technology behind the platform.

For

  • Easily record your meetings
  • Flexible screen share technology
  • Bundle with VoIP, UCaaS, and CPaaS

Against

  • Expensive if you need many host accounts
  • Very similar to Zoom

Are you on the lookout for a new  video conferencing tool? If you are, you should give RingCentral Meetings some thought. This platform is one of the best video conferencing software options around and makes it easy to host productive business meetings through advanced screen sharing and administrator tools.

In this RingCentral Meetings video conferencing review, we’ll discuss the other standout features of this software. But before we get started, you should be aware that using this platform can get pricey if you need multiple host accounts.

Plans and pricing

If you’re on a tight budget, you’ll be pleased to know that RingCentral Meetings has a surprisingly feature-rich free plan. With RingCentral Meetings Free, you can host meetings with up to 100 participants, record your meetings, and share multiple screens simultaneously. However, the major restriction here is that all free calls are limited to 40 minutes in length.

To remove that meeting length limit or to access meeting reports, phone support, and scheduling, it’s worth upgrading to the Essentials plan for $14.99 per user per month. This tier of service allows participants to join calls over a regular phone line.

Bigger organizations may wish to sign up for the $19.99 per user per month Advanced package, which includes all the features of the Essentials plan plus a Service Level Agreement (SLA) and access to a real-time usage dashboard. Besides these three standalone packages, RingCentral Meetings is available as part of the RingCentral Office package, through which 500-person meeting licenses can be purchased.

Features and utilities

Participants can connect to your high definition video conferences on RingCentral Meetings via computers and mobile devices running iOS and Android. Most other video conferencing tools also offer mobile applications, but RingCentral Meetings goes a step further with a hands-free Drive Mode that enables participants to listen in from the road.

Collaboration is a core part of RingCentral Meetings. This platform has taken screen sharing to the next level, with support for mobile screen sharing and integrations for platforms like Google Drive and Dropbox, enabling you to show off presentations or share key files during meetings.

Setup

Creating a new RingCentral Meetings account is extremely straightforward. All you need to sign up is an email address. In some cases, a phone number to verify your account may also be requested. As soon as the registration process is complete, you’ll be taken to your RingCentral Meetings dashboard.

Here, you can start your first meeting by hitting the Meet Now button. This will automatically download the RingCentral Meetings client to your computer. Once installed, you can start a chat with or without video. Alternatively, you can schedule a future meeting or join an on-going call by entering a meeting ID.

You can also finish the setup process through a mobile device. After installing the RingCentral Meetings app, hit the Meet Now button and choose whether or not to start sharing your video.

Interface and performance

Anyone who’s already used the popular video conferencing application Zoom will feel instantly at home in the RingCentral Meetings interface. That’s because RingCentral Meetings is powered by Zoom and, during calls, the two programs have more or less identical controls.

On the bottom left of the in-call window, you’ll find prominent options to start and stop sharing video and audio. Just like with Zoom, you have the option to hold down the spacebar to temporarily unmute yourself, which is an excellent shortcut during busy meetings.

In the center of the control bar, you’ll find options to manage and invite participants, share your screen, send chat messages, and record the meeting. Each of these functions works really well though the screen sharing option is definitely a highlight. With this feature, you can share individual windows or the screen of a connected iPhone or iPad.

Overall, we were pleased with the video and audio quality experienced during our RingCentral Meetings review. There was no noticeable reduction in clarity when large numbers of participants joined, and the program consistently detected and highlighted the video stream of the current speaker.

Security

RingCentral is pleasingly transparent about which security standards—such as Secure Real-Time Transport Protocol (SRTP) and Transport Layer Security (TLS)—it uses to protect user data. What’s more, RingCentral actively monitors accounts for unusual calling patterns and warns users if any suspicious activity occurs.

Several RingCentral apps have also achieved HITRUST certification status, which means they meet strict security requirements related to cybersecurity risk. Despite this, however, there have been past security breaches related to RingCentral Meetings. In July 2019, for example, several security vulnerabilities were detected in the platform, although they were quickly resolved by an update.

Support

As long as you sign up for a paid RingCentral plan, you’ll get 24/7 phone support to address any problems with your account. You can also find the answers to common questions about RingCentral Meetings through the frequently asked questions section of the RingCentral website.

The competition

Editor's note: Looking for a Video Conferencing Software for your business? If you're after information to help choose the solution that's right for you, fill in the questionnaire below and we can provide you with information from a variety of vendors for free:

It makes sense to compare RingCentral Meetings to Zoom, the video platform from which it borrows much of its core tech. These two services share many of the same features and even have similar pricing schemes, with paid Zoom plans also starting at $14.99 per host per month for 100 participants. There are a few notable differences though, as Zoom has a somewhat more advanced account management interface but lacks a hands-free Drive Mode.

Another relevant competitor is FreeConference.com. Like RingCentral Meetings, FreeConference.com has an excellent free plan but lets you host much larger meetings, with support for up to 1,000 participants.

Final verdict

With its Zoom-powered technology, RingCentral Meetings is able to provide an impressive suite of video conferencing features, such as a digital whiteboard and advanced screen share tools, which can also work with RingCentral's already comprehensive suite of unified communications contact platform tools.

Despite past security issues, calls made through this platform should be adequately protected, and an easy-to-use setup will make migrating your team to RingCentral Meetings a breeze.
