After entering the registration code, the installation program said it couldn't connect to the Internet, despite an active browser session proving otherwise.

Retrying solved the problem, but the same message reappeared later when reinstalling.

After installation, during which a full update was performed, the interface also told us that the virus definitions were 'very old', despite having been downloaded just a few minutes earlier.

Despite this, F-Secure is impressive. It integrates anti-virus and anti-spyware protection, and contains an anti-spam filter, an easily configured parental control and an Internet Shield, which is basically a firewall and active system scanning.

The parental controls have good defaults for both small children (who can only see what you want them to see) and teenagers (who can't see adult sites or those featuring, for example, drugs).

After its slightly unsteady start, F-Secure successfully found all three items of malware.
