The Nokia N900 - coming soon(er that expected)

Vodafone's plans for a Nokia N900 UK release date for January have taken a turn for the more concrete, with it emerging that the phone will be available on 7 January 2010.

However, The Carphone Warehouse will be jumping ahead of the network, by making the new N900 available in its stores from 26 December.

Of course, it has been on sale from Nokia direct for a good many days now, but this is the first time the public will be able to get it subsidised from a network in the 'normal' manner.

The phone will be available from Vodafone for free on a £35 a month contract, running for a 24 months, although there's no information on what this will give you. However, with the N900 being a very data centric device, we'd imagine there would be a pretty generous web bundle.

January spectacular

Vodafone was long rumoured to be the first carrier of the N900, and duly delivered - although we don't expect it to be exclusive to that carrier, with O2 and Orange also likely destinations for the device.

You might remember than the HTC HD2 was dropped from the Vodafone range in response to mysterious 'other smartphones' coming up - this, along with the iPhone will be released in January, so it seems Vodafone wanted a QWERTY device rather than a large tablet phone to sit alongside Apple's effort.

4. I was tweeting Carphone Warehouse about their Vodafone contracts for the N900 and got told that it was £35 a month but no web! Ridiculous. Apparently there will be other contracts available later with web but for £40+

cpwcares@LostMyHeart The £35 tariff will not include web but we will have tariffs available which include web usage. These will range from £40 p/m

3. I got mine on Vodafone from Nokia retail shop last week. Best phone I've ever had. lew247 is correct when they say that it's unfinished but with all the maemo / linux collaboraters around the world it's not going to be long before this becomes the must have phone. Having taken a look at all the apps in development (which being open source means you can!) there is literally hundreds that will be hitting download and repository sites very soon.

The bundle i got was very generous and had ample minutes / texts and airtime for my requirements which as a business user was incredibly important. Cross platform use was also equally important to me and not being tied into itunes / app store. This is not just a phone but a phone/pda/internet tablet all rolled into one.

Stunning piece of kit and don't think I'll be disappointed at all.

2. Nokia retail were the 1st ro release this.

I've had one along with a Voda contract for almost 2 weeks now.

It's simply the best phone out there, although some might not like it, as it seems "unfinished" for instance no MMS and many other things.

However this will probably come in a future firmware update, and I'm expecting many applications for it will be availabl before long.

Althogh it dissapoints in a few ways with some things it's missing I wouldn't swap it for any other phone and I'd not sell it either.

1. More choice has to be better, so I dont know why the carriers (Orange / Vodafone etc) wouldnt stock as many phones as possible, so having a 'qwerty' phone to complement the iPhone seems a little limited. How about a whole selection of phones to choose from ? (online for sure.. obviously retail shelf space may be limited)

How often have people joined / switched a network to simply get the phone they actually want.. I know I have.
