Microsoft has revealed that its latest operating system, Windows 7, has sailed past the 90 million sales mark, prompting much celebration from the company.
The announcement came at the Morgan Stanley Technology Media & Telecom Conference, where Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein relayed the fact that 90 million licences for the product had been shifted.
Humbled and excited
The news was also put into a blog, with Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc noting that the company was "humbled and excited that people are responding so positively to Windows 7 - our customers have made it the fastest selling operating system in history".
The blog also went on to big up PCs, saying that there's a number of hardware innovations coming to the high streets soon, including the Sony Vaio X which is so small "it could fit inside a MacBook Air".
Released back in October 2009, Windows 7 has been a great success for Microsoft – both critically and commercially.
Microsoft must be crossing all its fingers that this positivity will leak into the mobile phone market, where the company is preparing its latest OS – Windows Phone 7 Series.

5. I am not surprised that windows 7 outsold other O/Ses past and present. The O/S is sleek, easy to navigate and above all very user friendly. Having said that i think microsoft should slash the price - £30 quid would be a reasonable amount for all version, they've made zillions from windows7 already

4. So if we take an absoute bottom figure and assume that everybody took the prerelease price deal of around £45 then they have brought in 45 x 90million = £4,050,000,000!! WOW

3. HD the reason people don't go with Linux is not because it's unfamiliar it's because it's a piece of sh*t.
Seriously now, people want an easy solution that plays all AV - games - whatever without needing a degree to get it to work.

2. I am way more pragmatic about boasts like this.
If your a PC user and you buy a new PC you get Windows 7. Its not like you have much of a choice still. Linux is an option, but lets face it the majority of PC users are still not ready to go with unfamiliarity!
Even if your a XP user dissolutioned with Vista, your likely to have decided you can't hold back any more and will have to bite the bullet and try Win7 or face continue using an ever ageing 5+ year old O/S.
If you were happy to suffer Vista, your naturally going to go Win7.
So is this really some amazing landmark achievement? I would say it was probably expected by Microsoft and the industry as natural sales.
