SyncBackFree

Named after a legendary skateboarder, musician and all round cool guy*, SyncBackFree (formerly SyncBack Freeware) is a convenient and straightforward backup tool that can back up not just locally but to faraway computers too.

You can back up to a different folder, to external drives, to CD, or to another PC, and there's a built-in FTP client for backing up to remote computers. It's very easy to use and does its best to make a dull but necessary job fuss-free.

Why you need it

Because sooner or later you'll hear a noise like a washing machine full of spanners as your hard disk fails. Or if not that, you might be making the noise if your SSD stops working or your laptop gets lost or lifted.

If you store it digitally and it's even slightly important to you, it's essential that you have a backup, and ideally a backup that's kept somewhere far away. That way if disaster or destruction happens, you can get your important stuff back on another PC.

Although SyncBackFree can back up to CD, we wouldn't recommend it for anything other than short-term storage. Over the years we've discovered that the kind of cheap CD-Rs we buy in the shops don't age very well. They're also easily lost, damaged, or covered in jam and shoved into Xboxes by toddlers.
