HandBrake is a free, open source video transcoder that comes with a range of features that make ripping a DVD to your storage device as easy as possible.

If you just want to get started quickly, or if you're a novice user, HandBrake comes with a number of pre-made profiles optimised for a number of different devices. Just choose the profile for your device and HandBrake will copy your media into the optimised format and quality.

There's a good choice of outputs and encoders, so you should be able to produce the desired result whatever you're looking for. For example, when it comes to video encoders you've got a choice of H.264, H.265, MPEG-4, MPEG-2, VP8 and Theora.

Audio encoders include AAC, CoreAudio AAC/HE-AAC, MP3, Flac, AC3 or Vorbis.

Keeping your video organised is easy, thanks to the title/chapter selection function and the ability to add chapter markers. You can add subtitles should you wish, and there's also a live video preview to help you keep track of how your video looks.

HandBrake has also got a range of filters, including: deinterlacing, decomb, detelecine, deblock, grayscale, cropping and scaling.

Verdict: HandBrake makes it easy to rip DVDs to your PC with maximum control and minimum hassle.
