Android 2.2 rolling out for O2 HTC Desire owners

O2 appears to have begun rolling out Android 2.2 to some HTC Desire customers.

We've been getting early reports from readers that they have been prompted to install a new over the air (OTA) update to their HTC Desire, and it turns out to be Android 2.2.

Forum users are corroborating the claims, but there are some that are claiming that the new update is causing the phone to freeze.

Potzy on the O2 official forum has said: "Maybe spoke too soon, I think the update may have bricked my phone. It won't start up now, gets stuck on the O2 blue startup screen."

UPDATE: Nearly every user that's installed the O2 OTA update offered on their phone is reporting the phone is freezing at the boot stage, so perhaps it's best to wait for advice from O2 direct before accepting the update.

UPDATE 2: It seems that most people are seeing the update working fine on their phone, so early reports of blue screens of death may be a little premature.

O2 had confirmed it has launched Android 2.2 for the HTC Desire, so check your phone's firmware to see if there's a FroYo surprise waiting for you.

Frozen Yoghurt

The new Android 2.2 update is offering all the improvements HTC has put in place, like HD video recording and improved speeds.

We've contacted O2 for an official response, so we'll let you know when you'll be getting your Android 2.2 update if you're an O2 HTC Desire customer.

(Thanks to Gavin for sending this in)

19. I have Iphone, my wife HTC Legend 2.1 OS.

I tell you what. If you need a business and financial tool with a SIMPLE AND LOGICAL MENU - go for Iphone. I don't even mention the 3d games.

To be frank, even poor Symbian is more logical than Android . How come you people believe that HTC and Google can deliver a seamless on-air upgrade?

NOT POSSIBLE, DONT EVEN THINK OF IT, EVER?

18. The update bricked my desire - I've got just the O2 welcome screen, that's it.

I spoke to someone in the service operations team and he said 'loads' of people were having the same problem, and he wasn't even updating his own HTC!

Of course, being O2 - they know they have destroyed my phone, but are unwilling to provide a replacement. Send it in for repair, be without a phone for 2 weeks - that's as far as I got. Great.

16. I'm on T-mobile. I got my Desire from Carphonewarehouse at the were out of stock at tmobile and to my suprise it came preloaded with 2.2!

Works great EXCEPT there is a flash problem that seems to crash the browser. I've only seen this problem discussed on a vodafone forum. Does anyone else experience this problem??

I have to turn flash to "on demand", or flash heavy sites such as bbc crash. Oh, and I have the latest update of Flash.

14. hi prettyvacant,

Would the installation of HTC sync (http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=312&cat=3&dl_id=982) fix the USB driver issue and allow you to reflash your Desire?
