Why pay for an antivirus subscription when there are free applications that will do a good job instead?
Take AVG AntiVirus Free. It has the capability to scan hard disks, CDs, DVDs and other portable media. It can also create a rescue CD, which includes the most important system files, as well as the AVG SOS program. In an emergency you can use it to start up your infected machine.
Faster scans and less demand on system resources - that's what AVG offers in the new 2014 version of this popular virus scanner. The user interface has also been completely renewed and is now reminiscent of the Metro design of Windows 8.
It’s not just prettier. This Free version includes AVG’s solid Antivirus protection, which blocks viruses, slaps back spyware and detects/removes other nasty malware.
It’s joined by a Link Protection feature that actively scans web, Twitter and Facebook links to alert you to dangerous websites. There’s also a File Shredder option, which securely deletes files to prevent them from being recovered. Think of it as the digital equivalent of a cross-cut paper shredder from Staples.
Be aware that the Free version doesn’t include AVG’s Online Shield, which is designed to protect your computer from potentially harmful downloads. Nor does it incorporate the Data Safe option, which can be used to encrypt and password protect important or sensitive files.
For both of these AVG would like you to upgrade to its paid-for AVG Internet Security 2014 product, which also boasts Anti-Spam functionality to stop spammers and scammers in their tracks and a Firewall that puts up a barrier to stop hackers trying to gatecrash your system.
AVG Antivirus Free is fully functional for private use with the restriction that there’s no user support and it can only be used on individual machines. That said, if you own an Android phone, you can also take advantage of AVG AntiVirus Free for Android, which provides antivirus protection for your mobile, plus the ability to track your phone should it get lost or stolen.
Verdict: AVG AntiVirus Free protects your system safely and reliably and is a great alternative to Avira Free Antivirus.
Note: the setup file for AVG AntiVirus Free loads all the necessary data from the internet. During the installation, AVG also suggests that you install a toolbar and change your default search engine. We recommend you deselect both options.
