TV size finder — get the right size screen for your room
When you're buying a new TV, one of the biggest decisions is the size — but this can also be one of the hardest decisions to make. That's why we built our easy TV size calculator, which you'll find just below.
You tell it how far away you sit from the screen, and it'll tell you what the ideal size is — and we'll recommend the best options for different budgets, based on our hands-on reviewing experience with the sets.
The size recommendations are based on a ratio of distance from the screen compared to screen size. For general viewing, this ratio is 1.6:1 — meaning that your distance from the screen is 1.6x the size of the screen.
We chose this ratio based on the amount of your vision that the screen will fill — the screen will occupy about 30° in your vision at that ratio. We chose 30° based on advice and research from Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, THX, the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, and the University of Cambridge.
However, we know that some people lean towards wanting a bigger-than-average TV for a more cinematic experience, while some people hate a large screen and want something smaller than average. So our tool lets you say if you want something larger or smaller than average, and in that case, we calculate based on different distance-to-size ratios.
For the cinematic option, we use a 1.2:1 ratio, which is 40° in your field of vision. For the smaller option, we use a 2:1 ratio, which is 20° in your field of vision.
