Pure Usenet is a popular newsgroup service that operates its own servers and offers a wide variety of unlimited Usenet packages with 3,100 days of retention at a low price.
Pure Usenet doesn’t disappoint on the performance front. It has consistent download speeds, free SSL and 3,100 days of binary and text retention -- a recent upgrade of 1,100 days on all servers.
It is good to see that retention was upgraded, but there are still other Usenet services that offer more retention. Newshosting, for instance, has 4,106 days of article retention.
The number of connections you get depends on the account you choose, ranging between 8 and 12. There are packages out there with more connections – some rival providers offer up to 50 connections, albeit at a higher price -- but the majority of users will be able to utilize their full bandwidth with this number of connections. You can test it yourself with free unlimited downloads for one week, which is one of the best free Usenet trials available.
There are currently no US servers on their network, and they haven’t announced any plans to do so. Regardless, their backbone will generally provide very good speeds from any location.
Security and support
Like the majority of providers, Pure Usenet offers SSL encryption to secure your connections to their data centres.
If you’ve not had any truck with a Usenet service before, you needn’t worry, as there’s plenty of help at hand. Common technical questions are answered in a comprehensive and clearly written FAQ page. Should you run into any problems, you can get in touch with Pure Usenet’s customer service team here.
You get a lot of choice in terms of unlimited access plans and prices. The most affordable package costs €3,09 (£2.66, $3.40) a month for an annual account (€3,87 if you opt for the month-to-month plan), and for that, you get eight connections, a maximum speed of 20Mbps and 3,100 days of retention on all binary and text newsgroups. This option is somewhat basic, but cheap for the level of access you are getting.
The Pure XL plan costs €4,53 (£3.91, $4.98) a month with an annual account (€5,67 with the month-to-month plan), giving you 60Mbps of speed and twelve connection, just a marginal jump in cost for 3X the speed of the Pure M plan. If you want even more, €5,97 (£5.15, $6.56) will get you the Pure XXL plan with unlimited speed and 12 connections (€7,47 with the month-to-month plan). SSL encryption is included with every plan.
All plans include a 7-day free trial with unlimited downloads. Definitely worth a try considering it’s rare to find true unlimited free trials out there.
Pure Usenet provides quality service at a good price. While it may follow a few other providers in terms of retention and the number of connections, it’s a great option if you are looking for a good value for unlimited Usenet access. You also can’t beat the 1 week, unlimited access free trial.
