When you download Notepad++ you get a small text editor that removes a lot of limitations of the Windows Notepad.
If you're looking to jot down a quick note or remove formatting from copied text, Windows Notepad is a great option. But if you want a small, lightweight text editor that is a little less sparse, you'll probably want to look elsewhere.
That's where Notepad++ comes in. Like the default Windows Notepad, Notepad++ loads up quickly and very light on system resources, so it won't slow you down or hold you back.
But there's more. Notepad++ highlights HTML syntax in different colours, making it ideal for editing code. It will auto complete words and functions, and there are bookmark, WYSIWYG printing and multi-view functions built in. There's even a document map so you can quickly find your way around lengthy files.
The tabbed user interfacer is highly customisable, so you can have a row of tabs along the top, vertical tabs, nested tabs, no tabs at all and more. You can also zoom in and out and record macros to help streamline frequently used processes, while the multi-editing feature allows you to adjust several instances of similar text at the same time (such as repeating HTML code).
Notepad++ is open source, so if you want to get even more from it, you can thanks to a range of plugins. These include autosave functionality, advanced clipping and spell checkers. You can select and deselect these directly during the installation.
Verdict: Notepad++ is a powerful open source text editor. Start using it and you'll wonder why you stuck with Windows Notepad for so long.
