Recoverability matters more than protection: Rethinking cyber resilience for the AI era with Dell PowerProtect One
For years, the ‘backup complete’ dialog box has served as a calming reassurance that IT teams have properly protected their critical data. The problem is that copying information and recovering from a serious outage or cyberattack are two very different things.
A completed backup says little about whether that data can be restored cleanly, how long the process will take, or how quickly business operations can resume. These questions are only becoming more pressing as businesses depend on larger and more varied data sources.
AI adds new datasets and production workloads to the mix, but the underlying problem is familiar to many IT teams: when ransomware or a serious outage hits, having a copy somewhere is only part of the answer.
Cyber resilience, therefore, has to account for recoverability as well as protection, including whether stored data can be trusted and whether recovery processes actually work when the business needs them most.

What does recoverability mean in practice?
Recoverability goes beyond simply having a backup on file. Recoverability is the whole end-to-end process of locating the backup, putting it into action, and getting the organization’s core services and applications up and running again.
A restore can finish in record time and still leave your business stuck. If the recovered copy is missing hours of transactions or can't be trusted after a ransomware attack, you've technically restored data, but you haven't recovered anything. Restore brings data back. Recovery brings the business back.
Two familiar measures help put some numbers against that distinction. Recovery time objective (RTO) sets out how quickly a system needs to return, while recovery point objective (RPO) describes how much recent data the organization can afford to lose.
That’s why a recovery plan has to answer a harder question: will restoration work quickly and confidently when the business depends on it?
A protected backup still has to be trustworthy
Backups have become a target in their own right. Sophos found that 94% of organizations hit by ransomware said attackers tried to compromise their backups, and more than half of those attempts succeeded.
The backup itself is therefore part of the attack surface. Keeping a copy of critical data is important, but it offers little comfort if that copy has been encrypted or deleted during the same incident.

Recovery confidence has to be tested, not assumed
The middle of an outage is a poor time to discover that a recovery plan doesn’t work as expected. Applications may rely on other services coming back first, while restoring a large number of systems individually can quickly turn recovery into a nightmare.
Testing makes those problems visible before there’s a real incident to contend with.

Why does backup complexity make recovery harder?
Fragmented backup environments give IT teams more moving parts to coordinate when something goes wrong. Different tools may protect different workloads, each with its own policies and recovery processes, leaving administrators to piece together a wider view while the clock is already ticking.
That problem is not unusual. Unitrends’ 2025 backup and recovery research found a sizeable gap between recovery confidence and reality: more than 60% of organizations expected to recover from downtime within hours, but only 35% actually managed it.
