Philips' Blu-ray player is a good value deck that excels with HD movies

Too chunky to be truly portable, but a brilliant Blu-ray player

Denon's powerhouse DVD-3800BD player has dazzling performance, but no BD Live

We get vertical with Samsung's wall-hugging Blu-ray deck - the brand's slimmest and fastest yet

    Panasonic DMP-BD50 review

    8

I think I speak for all hardcore home cinema fans in saying that this is the dedicated Blu-ray player the world has been waiting for. Created to deliver the highest possible quality video and audio standards, as well as finally unlocking the forbidden pleasures of BD Live (whatever the heck they might be) via an Ethernet port and local storage, Panasonic's DMP-BD50 appears to offer it all.

    Loewe Blutech Vision review

    Loewe Blutech Vision review

    6

The Loewe name is synonymous with adventurous design, so it comes as no surprise that its debut Blu-ray player, the Blutech Vision, focuses heavily on the aesthetic. Available in anthracite or chrome silver, the BluTech Vision is minimalist in design and sports a front panel devoid of any features other than a central porthole.

    Pioneer BDP-LX70A review

    Pioneer BDP-LX70A review

    8

The Pioneer LX70A lacks the hardware to be upgraded to Blu-ray Profile 1.1, but its LAN connection does at least allow it to go online and download new firmware. This is a significant boon. While taken for granted with HD DVD, it's still rare on dedicated Blu-ray machines. It's also fully-compatible with both Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio, giving cinephiles access to every audio format in use.

    Samsung BD-P1400 review

    6

The Samsung BD-P1400 Blu-ray deck has a feature list superior to the company's debut Blu-ray deck, and is bolstered further by a firmware update which we suggest all buyers implement as soon as they can.

    Panasonic DMP-BD30 review

    8

Having ridden the coat-tails of Sony's PlayStation 3 to format victory, Blu-ray finds itself at a crossroads. With studio moguls now convinced that Blu-ray is where the cash is at, hardware manufacturers finally believe that the format could catch fire. All are eager to sideline their first generation of BD players (with incomplete spec and ill-judged Java compatibility), and usher in a new wave of altogether more sophisticated kit.

    Toshiba HD-E1 review

    Toshiba HD-E1 review

    10

Flying in the face of current inflationary trends Toshiba's entry-level HD DVD deck has recently had its price cut. A step-up model which adds 1080p output to the HD-E1 will soon be on sale for £450

    Sony RDR-HXD870 review

    Sony RDR-HXD870 review

    10

The RDR-HXD870 comes from a new breed of cutting-edge digital recorders that offer 1080p upscaling, allowing you to make the most of DVDs and TV recordings on Full HD TVs. But this is merely the tip of the iceberg

    Sharp BPHD20H review

    Sharp BPHD20H review

    8

The BDHP20H is powered up and blasting out 1080p in the time it takes most high-definition disc players to flash up a ‘Welcome’ message. Considering that this has been the biggest complaint with most HD disc spinners to date, Sharp could be onto something. Add that to some high-end Bluray disc features and a smooth mirrored finish, and the Sharp seems extremely desirable.

    Sony RDR-HXD870 review

    10

If this exciting new HDD/ DVD combi deck is anything to go by, Sony's latest range could finally oust Panasonic from the top spot. It boasts a comprehensive feature set and a realistic price tag. But does it have the performance?

    Sony BDP-S500 review

    Sony BDP-S500 review

    8

Thanks to the PlayStation 3, the Blu-ray Disc Association is claiming minor and major victories in the HD format conflict, but while some software is shifting in significant numbers, organising a ticker-tape parade through Home Cinema Central is premature.

    Panasonic DMP-BD10 review

    Panasonic DMP-BD10 review

    8

Blu-ray has arrived in the UK, if not with a vengeance, then at least a reasonably enthusiastic proclamation. Panasonic's DMP-BD10 joins Samsung's BDP-1000 at the forefront of the new format's invasion, and there's a sense that all the posturing and prevarication that has preceded the format is coming to an end.

    Panasonic DMR-EX77 review

    Panasonic DMR-EX77 review

    10

We previously reviewed the DMR-EX87, an HDD/DVD recorder with a mighty 250GB capacity. Clearly, not everyone needs such a large hard disk, and its for these users that Panasonic has come up with this 160GB version, which costs a good £150 less

    JVC DR-MH300 review

    8

A handsome-looking recorder, the DR-MH300 is also reasonably well-built. As with the LG and Toshiba machines reviewed elsewhere, it's multiformat - albeit not quite as flexible; the DVD drive will only record onto DVD-R/RW and DVD-RAM

    Pioneer BDP-LX70 review

The first flurry of HD players having left a seriously mixed impression, the pressure is on the next batch to really make an impact. And of all the players making their debuts, few have raised higher expectations for us than Pioneer's offering.

    Toshiba HD-EP35 review

    Toshiba HD-EP35 review

    10

This is the flagship model in Toshiba's second generation of HD DVD players, which makes it the de facto leader for the blue laser format. The HD-EP35 is currently the best specified player of its kind and this seems set to stay that way for now

    Sharp BD-HP20H review

    Sharp BD-HP20H review

    8

Sharp is a big name in Blu-ray. Not a lot of people know that. It's not because the company is a prolific maker of BD kit: rather, the company is a mass-producer of the blue-violet laser diodes vital for Blu-ray players

    Toshiba HD-EP30 review

    Toshiba HD-EP30 review

    8

Considering Toshiba's original entry-level HD DVD player, the HD-E1, only launched towards the end of 2006 at a price of £450, it's remarkable that its direct replacement, the HD-EP30, is widely on sale for less than half as much
