In his bid for a record-equalling fifth Tour de France title, Tadej Pogacar is going to have to see off fierce competition from arch-rival Jonas Vingegaard and teenage sensation Paul Seixas when the 2026 Tour de France starts on July 4.

Only Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain have secured the maillot jaune more times than Pogacar, but whereas they were in their thirties or thereabouts (Merckx was 29) when they achieved the feat, Pogacar is still just 27 years old.

Then again, Anquetil's period of dominance fed into the era of Merckx, which in turn preceded the heydey of Hinault, which faded just as the epoch of Indurain appeared on the horizon. Then came Lance Armstrong, followed by Chris Froome, and now Pogacar and Vingegaard have split the last six editions of the race between them.

In other words, although we've never seen a cycling rivalry this fearsome and this sustained before, nothing can be taken for granted. Perhaps Seixas – or Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates XRG teammate Isaac del Toro – will be the man to usher in a new era.

Tadej Pogačar shouldn’t face too much resistance in his bid to win his first Tour de Suisse as his main rivals are all racing elsewhere or camped out at altitude preparing for the big one in a week’s time. Tom Pidcock should hopefully push him hard, and likewise Primož Roglič will be upset if he’s not in the mix for a podium spot, but if Pogačar is in the same shape that saw him win so prolifically in the spring, it will be a walk in the park.

This year there are only five stages, down from the usual eight to make it more attractive to riders preparing for the Tour and each day will start and finish in the same town. This will work brilliantly for fans who can see both the start and finish of a stage, and if they are resourceful maybe even catch the action halfway.

The five stages kick off with three hilly/mountainous affairs followed by a 23km time trial on stage four then an absolute monster Queen stage to end with. Starting half way up the Col de la Croix and crossing its summit three times in a row it finishes uphill and will be an awesome spectacle for the fans.

The race formally known as the Critérium du Dauphiné, or Critérium du Dauphiné Libre for the past 77 years has this year been somewhat controversally rebranded as the Tour Auvergne - Rhône-Alpes. With Tadej Pogačar choosing to race the Tour de Suisse and both Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel avoiding competition all together in June that leaves new French sensation Paul Seixas as the hot favourite for the win.

At the end of Stage seven, on top of the Grand Colombier, Luke Tuckwell just managed to hold onto his yellow jersey at the conclusion of another day’s high drama. Early in the stage Paul Seixas crashed and was forced to chase for 60 kilometres to get back to the front of the race, his kit torn and body dripping in blood. Understandably he wasn’t at his best on the finishing climb and could not match the pace of stage winner and now new favourite for the race Issac del Torro.

With the whole of France now tracking his every move their young Messiah Paul Seixas will have the eyes of a nation on his back as he bids to win his first big mountain stage race. He’s proved himself on shorter punchy climbs but will he live up to the huge expectation placed on his 19 year old shoulders when it comes to the high mountains, of which this race is packed.

Thankfully for him, his principle rivals, Evenepoel, Vingegaard and Pogačar who he will face at the Tour de France are absent which will make his task slightly easier. He will still have formidable competition though, as Juan Ayuso, João Almeida, Oscar Onley and joint race favourite Issac del Toro are all on the start list, all looking for a chance of a big win in the absence of the superstars.

Also here to hone their form before July are this year’s Paris Roubaix winner Wout van Aert, British time trial star Ethan Hayter and the Irish breakaway specialist Ben Healy.

This year’s route is an absolute killer with no less than three summit top finishes, in a row. There are zero days for the sprinters, mountains to cross every day and a team time trial thrown in to allow the squads to practice the discipline before the Tour de France.

Kicking off with a couple of modest mountain stages followed by the time trial on stage three the race then heads to breakaway territory on stages four and five before the triple whammy at the end. Stage six crosses three huge peaks before arriving at the summit finish of Côte de Crest-Voland, stage seven ticks off four mountains on the way to the giant Grand Colombier which leaves one stage left.

At only 120 kilometers the final stage may be short but it’s insanely hard crossing the Col du Pré, the Montée de Bisanne, and the Col des Aravis before finishing on the Plateau de Solaison. If Paul Seixas was looking for a test to prove to his people that he is ready to fight for the Tour de France then he has found it.

Could this be the day the Giro d’Italia 2026 is won. Some would say Jonas Vingegaard already has it in the bag but the Queen stage can and often does turn a race on its head.

This monster Dolomite stage is easily the toughest of the race, packing 5000 metres of elevation into just 151 kilometres of riding. Leaving Feltre there isn’t a metre of flat road as the utterly relentless route crosses five mountain peaks before hitting the vicious summit finish to the Piani di Pezzè.

The first ascent of the day is the 12km Passo Duran which is followed by the climb to Coi then the Forcella Staulanza and then the high point of the day and the entire race, the mighty Passo Giau. Sitting at 2223m the Giau is where the Cima Coppi will be awarded to the first rider who crosses its summit after 10 kilometres of remorseless 10% incline. This road is as beautiful as it is brutal, a feast for the eyes but torture for the legs.

Right after the descent comes the penultimate climb, the 10 kilometre long Passo Falzarego and then it’s time for the finish on the exquisite Piani di Pezzè. These final five kilometres average over 10% with slopes as steep as 12%, it’s an evil yet worthy venue to almost certainly decide who is crowned winner of the 2026 Giro.

His solo victory up the Piancavallo was proof of how dominant the 29-year-old has been in the mountains as he extended his lead by over a minute to Felix Gall, in second.

All that's left now is the final stage, a procession around Rome.

The 2026 men’s cycling season has already served up a whole host of epic races and victories, and with the first grand tour of the year set to roll out next month as the Giro d’Italia starts in Bulgaria, teams are well underway with their preparations.

INEOS Cycling has recently announced a new five-year partnership with Netcompany, with the Danish tech giant taking on a role not only as title sponsor of the team, but providing its PULSE AI platform in a bid to push it to the next level.

I spoke to André Rogaczewski, CEO of Netcompany, and Geraint Thomas, Netcompany INEOS Director of Racing, to find out more.

Data blizzard

As the world of sport becomes ever more dominated by technology and data, the need for athletes and teams alike to get a handle on this information is greater than ever.

“In cycling, you have so much data,” Rogaczewski tells me at the official launch of the Netcompany INEOS team in London, “it's like a blizzard of data on the individual riders, the team, all the equipment - about the race itself, so the ability to integrate all that data and capture it is going to be very important.”

Already used in corporate and business environments including HMRC, Heathrow and Munich airports and TSS, the launch is the first in sport for PULSE - so with sports such as Formula 1 leading the way in harnessing the power of data, why has cycling, where considerations around power, effort and nutrition are so vital, been so slow to adapt?

“The answer is pretty simple - the technology is pretty new,” Rogaczewski laughs, “and when it comes to, for instance, airports, it's AI prediction, the whole data capability performing with all the data in there, it's technically not been possible until just three or four years ago.”

“When we made the first version of this we spent a lot of time with Copenhagen Airport just building up the basic modelling, so it's just something that hasn't been there before.”

Thomas, who started his role earlier this year after retiring from a glittering career that saw him win two Olympic gold medals and the 2018 Tour de France, agrees.

“That's the exciting thing, the potential of being ahead of the curve really, on the front line moving forward,” he notes, “the possibilities are endless, it's like a discovery phase now, from our side, understanding what ultimately can it do - as you don't know what you don't know."

Both Rogaczewski and Thomas are keen to state that the use of PULSE is very much still a work in progress, with the team learning more from each race they complete. They are also keen not to overload their riders and staff with unnecessary data, with Thomas in particular saying he doesn’t want his team to get too much in their heads about data.

“You can't get all the data you want always - but that shouldn't hinder you from using the 80 percent that you have,” Rogaczewski notes, “if we can take all the trouble away, all the things that aren't related to doing your best on a bike, so they can concentrate on what is most important.”

“There's also good data and bad data,” Thomas adds, “so much stuff you don't really need that you can waste time looking at.”

“There's still that art and science - it's informative and it's concise, and use it in the right way - the young guys can get hung up on data...you don't want to overload them, you want them to realise this is information which can help in the big picture, but it's still down to the human and your mentality - it's a fine balance...this is a tool to use, and very, very useful.”

So will we see this AI-driven technology soon trickling down to everyday cyclists, much like Formula 1 has been a breeding ground for tools such as energy saving and power steering?

Much has been made of how technology creep into sport has taken away some of the “fun” of traditional competition - with athletes now combing over data, or using tech-assisted tools to get an extra advantage - so could this happen in cycling with the “blizzard of data” Rogaczewski describes?

“If that information is just aligned and clear, then you can use the best opportunity to make the right calls,” Thomas says, “and if you're making more and more correct decisions, that gives you the best chance to perform.

“At the end of the day, it's still about a guy on his bike, riding to the top of a mountain as quick as he can!”

“It's all new to me,” Thomas says, “but the potential is definitely there, and the more input we can get from it, the more exciting it is - it feels like a new evolution of the team, a new partnership, we've got some great momentum so far, and it's just like - that's where we're going now, so get on board and enjoy the ride!”

Jonas Vingegaard will complete the Grand Tour set – before Tadej Pogacar no less – if he's able to win the Giro d’Italia on debut. Tour de Romandie 2026 - Preview

The 79th Tour de Romandie kicks off with a 3.2 km prologue in Villars-sur-Glâne before getting stuck into five extremely hilly stages in a race that is built for climbers. With 17 classified climbs spread across the week there is absolutely nothing on offer for the sprinters as the race navigates around Romandie in Switzerland.

Following the prologue, stage 1 is pretty much flat, except that is for the huge 12km ascent at Ovronnaz with its eye watering 9.1% average gradient. Stage 2 is a relentlessly lumpy stage with no giant peaks, so one for the riders who love short punchy climbs.

Stages 3 and 4 return to the high ground with stage 4 taking the title of Queen stage as it covers four huge mountains – including both sides of the Jaunpass and the Saanenmöser. There is only one summit finish though and that is reserved for the final stage, the 178.2-kilometre journey to Leysin which is sure to be a showdown of epic proportions.

Last year’s winner, João Almeida, is absent this year but second placed Lenny Martinez returns to do what he can to prevent Tadej Pogačar strolling to victory. Also looking to put in a strong ride are Florian Lipowitz (third in last year’s Tour de France), multiple grand Tour winner Primož Roglič and home favorite Mauro Schmid.

2026 Paris-Nice event preview

This year's race takes the peloton from Achères on the outskirts of Paris to Nice via eight stages with a total of 27 classified climbs as well as what could be a pivotal 23.5km team time trial.

The race kicks off not with a traditional sprint stage but a challenging lumpy affair, which will favour an attack minded rider who excels on steep climbs such as the 1.1km, 8.3% ascent of the Côte de Chanteloupe-les-Vignes which the riders will face twice before the finish.

Day two is for the sprinters though, their one and only chance of the race and then on stage three we see the 23.5km team time trial which should help establish a pecking order at the top of the rankings.

Stage 4 sees the arrival of the mountains with a very tough 195km featuring the Côte de la Croix de la Libération which has a maximum gradient of 12%, and the finishing climb to Uchon which has slopes as steep as 16%.

Things get even worse on Stage 5 as the route packs in over 3000m of elevation and like wise on stages 6, and 7 which culminates with the 7.3 kilometre summit finish to Auron.

There's no ceremonial sprint stage to end with either as stage 8 packs in a relentless amount of climbing including the Col de la Porte (7km at 7.2%), the Côte de Châteauneuf-Villevieille (6.6km at 6.6%), and the finale of the Côte de Linguador (3.3km at 8.8%).

Amongst the raft of talent lined up to challenge Jonas Vingegaard for the overall win keep an eye out for the British climber Oscar Onley, Spanish star Juan Ayuso and the home town hero, Lenny Martinez.

Stage seven was drastically curtailed due to bad weather resulting in a 47 kilometre race, which rising gradually uphill from the start ended in a bunch sprint won by the French champion Dorian Godon. Hopefully the weather gods will be kind for the final day into Nice which should baring accident see Jonas Vingegaard crowned stage winner.

As expected Jebel Hafeet proved decisive at the end of Stgae 6 and it was the young Mexican Issac del Torro who surged clear to drop everyone, take the stage and relieve Antonio Tiberi of the race lead.

With Pogačar opting not to ride this year’s Vuelta as he had initially intended, the role of favourite reverts to the resurgent Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike). Vingegaard however does not pose the same aura of invincibility as Pogačar, so the other team leaders will rightly assume they also have more than a fighting chance of taking victory.

Leading the pack of hopefuls is the UAE Team Emirates - XRG duo of João Almeida and Juan Ayuso who, if they don't end up fighting each other can use a two pronged attack until one assumes sole leadership. Egan Bernal (INEOS Grenadiers) would love to add a Vuelta to his Tour and Giro wins. Add in Giulio Ciccone, (Lidl - Trek), Felix Gaul (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) and Jai Hindley (Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe) and we are set for one pulsating race.

Other key riders to look out for amongst the glittering array of talent on the start sheet are time trial king Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers), the multi talented Mads Pedersen (Lidl - Trek) and of course the mercurial Tom Pidcock (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team).

Stage six did see a shake up in the GC but not between the favourites who all finished together in Andorra. Although Jonas Vingegaard tried he was unable to drop any of his rivals however he did lose his red jersey to Norway's Torstein Traeen who was in the day's break togheter with Jay Vine who took the stage win.

Stage seven is another mountainous one, harder still than stage six so maybe the steep slopes up to Cerler will allow Jonas to break clear.

This year’s route visits four countries, covers 3,151 kilometres and climbs a total of 53,914 meters packing in a whopping ten summit finishes.

Starting in Italy the race kicks off with a sprint stage between Turin and Reggia di Venaria then following this is another flat stage but one that finishes uphill on the steady drag to Limone Piemonte Desnivel.

Stage 3 is the last in Italy and it’s a lumpy affair then stage 4, starting in Susa takes the riders over the Col de Montgenevre into France where they will also face the Col du Lautaret before the fast run to the finish in Voiron.

With two countries visited it’s time for the race to head home for the stage 5 team time trial around Figueres before hitting its first big mountain top finish on Stage 6 which involves leaving Spain once more to reach Pal in Andorra.

Stage 7 is another mountain stage finishing at Cerler Huesca la Magia then wrapping up week one stages 8 and 9 are both hilly rather than mountainous and have breakaway written all over them.

After the first rest day the race resumes with 175 kilometres between the Parque de la Naturaleza Sendaviva and El Ferial Larra Belagua then stage 11 is a relentless hilly affair around the Basque town of Bilbao.

With a couple of mountains to cross but no summit finish stage 12 will be for a climbing break way but stage 13 will be key for the GC as it heads to the monstrous Alto de L’Angliru. One of the most feared climbs in pro cycling this beast will play a pivot role in deciding the winner so it’s a stage not to be missed. There’s no post Angliru rest day on stage 14 as the race heads right away to another punishing summit finish Alto de la Farrapona. Week two is then wrapped up with lumpy stage 15 before the riders head to the final rest day of the race in Pontevedra.

The third week of the Vuelta is traditionally the hardest and this year is no different as the race resumes with a climb packed 167 kilometres to Mos. Castro de Herville. There’s yet another summit finish on stage 17 then following this stage 18 is a tough 27 kilometre time trial around Valladolid.

Stage 19 offers the chance for the sprinters to return from their mountain hibernation before the final summit finish of the race the following day on the mighty Bola del Mundo. This wicked climb will set the overall positions in stone before the largely ceremonial run into Madrid on the final day.

With Vingegaard, Evenepoel and Pogačar all opting to fine tune their form in the French Alps at the Dauphiné, that leaves this year's Tour de Suisse ripe for the taking.

The favourites all finished together on the stage 7 summit finish and although João Almeida won the day to take the ten second time bonus he was unable to put any more time into the yellow jersey of Kévin Vauquelin. This leaves the race delicately poised for the final stage 10km uphill time trial with Almeida needing to overturn a half minute deficit if he wants to win.
