The Spurs took a gruelling route to the NBA Finals, playing 18 games including a seven-game series against holders Oklahoma that wrapped up just three days before the Finals tipped off. By contrast, the Knicks entered the series off the back of nine days of rest, having only played 14 times this postseason. They swept both Cleveland and Philadelphia.

And yet the Spurs entered the series as the clear favorites. That's largely down to Wembanyama, the NBA's first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year – who's also San Antonio's top offensive threat. It certainly doesn't help New York's cause that their own big man Mitchell Robinson is dealing with a broken finger. Not only is he on Wemby duty, but he's also one of the NBA's best rebounders.

It's worth remembering, however, that when these teams met in the NBA Cup final in December, the Knicks ran out 124-113 winners. They also destroyed the Spurs to the tune of 114-89 when they faced off at the MSG in March. Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns dazzled on both occasions. San Antonio, meanwhile, won 134-132 when they clashed at Frost Bank Center in December.

One of the main reasons the Knicks have fared so well against the Spurs this season is that they're well-equipped to combat Wembanyama. Dominating the paint has been a feature of New York's offense, but that isn't an option with the 7ft 4in towering over the basket. A good thing, then, that they've been the most prolific 3-point shooters through the NBA Playoffs.

San Antonio won their '99 series 4-1 to secure the first of five NBA championships (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2014). It's been so long since two-time champions New York last went all the way (1970, 1973) that they've never actually laid hands on the Larry O'Brien trophy. Look back at the old pictures and you'll see its predecessor, the Walter A Brown trophy, which was retired in 1976.

The individual battles between Silas Demary Jr. and Lendeborg, Alex Karaban and Morez Johnson, and Reed and Mara will be fascinating, but the key to victory appears to lie in a bigger-picture tactical battle. Michigan's furious pace of play has left its opponents in a tailspin, but on the rare occasion they've been forced to play slow, they've struggled.

Apple’s already released a good bit of immersive content shot specifically for the Vision Pro. You can get up close with Bono, rock out with Metallica, or take a peek behind the curtain at Yankee Stadium – even if that hurts a bit to write today after last night’s game – or stand alongside a herd of rhinos.

We’ve seen a broad range of content, but I’ve been waiting for something live – specifically, live sports. Seeing that Apple TV+’s Friday Night Baseball is capturing games with the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max gave me some hope, and now we have a confirmed release. In what might be the start of something new, select Los Angeles Lakers games will be live-streamed in Apple Immersive for the Vision Pro this coming season.

It’s not every game, but for those that are streaming – exclusive to the $3,500 Spatial Computer – you’ll get access to views that put you right in the middle of the action. Special cameras that support the format will be set courtside and under each basket to give you perspectives that amp up the immersion. The Lakers' games will be shot using a special version of Blackmagic Design’s URSA Cine Immersive Live camera.

In my eyes, this feels like Apple delivering on a promise – or at least starting to – as even in my first demo with the Vision Pro, I was treated to awesome, up-close shots of a whole range of sports.

Much like Apple TV+ deploying the iPhone 17 Pro in unique places around Fenway Park, the idea of capturing an NBA game in this format is to deliver a broadcast that replicates the feel of being at the game. Or in some cases – with a view from the net or as a player on the bench – a perspective normally reserved for the athletes.

This won’t be for every Lakers game, though. Apple and the NBA will announce which ones will be viewable on Apple Immersive later this fall (before the end of November 2025), with the first expected by early 2026.

Assuming you have the Vision Pro – which is available in the US, UK, and Australia, among other countries – you’ll need the NBA app or the soon-to-be-released Charter Communications Spectrum SportsNet app. Both will require visionOS 26 or later, which Apple released on September 15, 2025.

You’ll likely need an active subscription to either service, but we’re still waiting on those details. For now, via either app, you’ll be able to stream the Lakers in Apple Immersive live or on demand for three days after each game ends in the United States. Some live events will be limited to the Lakers’ regional broadcast territory, so if you’re not in a specific state or city, you might encounter a delay.

If you’re outside the US, fear not – you can still get your head in the game with replays in the NBA app in the UK, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and the UAE.

While we don’t yet know the date of the first game, if you have a Vision Pro, this will likely be something to tune into. The NBA app already offers unique experiences for watching traditional broadcasts, with stats and play-by-play, as well as digital views of the court.

But if this immersion truly makes it feel like you’re there, with some incredible shots, it could be the closest we’ve gotten to that long-promised experience. And if it goes well with the NBA and the Lakers, it might encourage other teams, leagues, and entertainment partners to attempt similar feats for Apple’s Immersive formats.

And when the more affordable Vision Pro arrives, Apple will have more engaging, enjoyable content ready to serve new customers.

In a press release, Apple detailed how a free update to the Apple Sports app in iOS 18 and watchOS 11 will bring a number of new features – most prominently the ability to check live scores without unlocking your device.

Later on in the night, it was a meeting of Virginia Cavaliers against Colorado State. In this lopsided First Four matchup, Colorado dominated the Virginia Cavaliers, securing a convincing 67-42 victory. The Rams' relentless defense stifled Virginia's scoring, enabling them to progress to the next round where they will face No.7 seed Texas Longhorns.

Today's match ups sees the Colorado Buffaloes clashing with the Boise State Broncos. Can they build on past successes? In 2021, as the No. 5 seed, they dominated No. 12 Georgetown in the opening round but fell to No. 4. Florida state.

However, head coach Dusty May going out of his way to insult the rampaging bull that is the Tennessee basketball – yes, basketball – program has turned this clash into the must-watch contest of the Sweet 16 round.

The Owls, who had never won a March Madness game before this year, are the second lowest-ranking team to reach this stage. Their 3-point shooting has been a major weapon throughout the first two rounds, and it could prove more vital than ever if the Volunteers choose to sit deep and frustrate.

March Madness has certainly been a wild ride. The Final Four are now the final two: Uconn vs San Diego. The National Championship game tips off tonight and you're all invited to see the finale of the NCAA basketball bracket bonanza!

As expected, the the San Diego Aztecs defeated The Owls 72-71 in the Final Four to earn a shot at the National title. Lamont Butler's last second shot made the win even sweeter. 

Tournament favourites the Uconn Huskies has a much easier time of it, beating all five opponents by comfortable double-digit margins to reach Monday's National Championship showdown.

The Aztecs have the mettle to overcome an early deficit. They've found themselves behind for more than 75 minutes since the Sweet 16, and Butler's buzzer-beating finish at the weekend will have given San Diego a huge boost in confidence. 

That said, Dan Hurley's Uconn carry an air of invincibility onto the hardcourt. And with Adama Sanogo leading the Huskies impressive scoring with an average of 17.2 points, the junior forward will be tough to outscore.

Tipoff at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, is set for 9.20 pm ET / 2.20am BST. The action will be live on CBS and the Huskies are 7-point favorites to beat the Aztecs.

March Madness, officially the Men's NCAA Division I basketball tournament, is the pinnacle of college sports, an event that casts the nation under its spell for three glorious weeks of wall-to-wall hoops hoopla.

The past few weeks have seen in a number of Beats Studio Buds leaks, with the wireless earbuds cropping up in Apple’s latest beta software for tvOS and iOS – and now, basketball star LeBron James appears to have stepped out wearing the rumored Apple buds. 

In photos posted to his Instagram, James is wearing what looks suspiciously like the Studio Buds animations that were revealed by MacRumors and 9to5Mac – the rounded housings with a prominent ridge are a dead giveaway:

As James is a Beats endorser – and as Engadget points out, he bought the entire 2008 Olympic men's basketball team pairs of Beats headphones – it wouldn't be unusual for him to get a first look at the upcoming earbuds before the rest of the world.

When will the Beats Studio Buds be released?

It’s been a while since Beats launched a pair of true wireless earbuds. The Powerbeats Pro offered a sports-friendly design and Apple-friendly connectivity features, and we thought it likely that the company would release a follow-up in the near future.

The so-called Powerbeats Pro 2 haven’t materialized, however – and it now looks like the Beats Studio Buds will be the next model to join the AirPods and the AirPods Pro in Apple’s lineup of wireless earbuds. 

Apple is yet to confirm the existence of the Studio Buds, but based on the leaks and a new appearance of the Buds in a recent FCC filing discovered by MacRumors, it's looking pretty certain that the Studio Buds will be arriving sooner rather than later. 

Unless Apple decides to drop the earbuds via an email as it did with its announcement that Apple Music will offer hi-res audio at no extra cost, the next feasible release date is at WWDC 2021 on June 7. 

And, now that we've seen what looks like the Studio Buds in the flesh for the first time, a June release date is looking even more likely.

Nike's been teasing a new evolution in basketball sneakers for a while, but now the world's largest shoe maker has unveiled 'the future of the game' with Nike Adapt BB – high-tech shoes which are not only self-lacing and app-controlled, but will also automatically adjust to the foot.

“We picked basketball as the first sport for Nike Adapt intentionally because of the demands that athletes put on their shoes,” says Eric Avar, Nike VP Creative Director of Innovation in the company's announcement.

He continued, “During a normal basketball game the athlete’s foot changes and the ability to quickly change your fit by loosening your shoe to increase blood flow and then tighten again for performance is a key element that we believe will improve the athlete’s experience."

According to Nike, the Adapt BB uses a custom motor and tension-sensing gears to automatically adjust the snugness of each sneaker on a player's feet. 

Using the Nike Adapt app, players can also manually input different settings and tensile strength, with the laces capable of pulling 32 pounds of force, which Nike says is roughly equivalent to "that of a standard parachute cord".

Nike's FitAdapt technology will also be receiving regular firmware updates which players can opt into, making Adapt BB the company's "first continually updated performance product" with a precision fit that will get better over time.

In keeping with the high-tech nature of the shoes, Nike Adapt BB will ship with a Qi wireless charging mat (pictured above) in the box, and wearers will also have full control of the LED lights in the shoes' soles, allowing them to change lighting colors on the fly. 

Nike Adapt BB will be available from Nike's online store from 10AM (EST) on February 17 and will be priced at $350 (around £272 / AU$486).

It’s that time of year again, so grab your best baller gear and your favourite pair of Air Jordans and head out onto Visual Concepts’ virtual courts. This year’s instalment of the most popular basketball sim on the planet has plenty of new features - some are completely new while others are subtle changes to the things you know and love. 

Thing is, NBA 2K has always been a little tougher to master than EA’s NBA Live series, so to ensure you’re picking and rolling like a pro, we’ve gathered ten of our best tips and tricks into one handy playbook.

Much like last year’s instalment, Visual Concepts has released a new Prelude. It serves less as a demo and more of a prologue to the full game. You get to pick your character’s look (or import your face from the app), stats and play a new career for the Shanghai Bears. 

Play every game, and see out every cutscene, and you’re getting a good hour or two of content. More importantly, you have to play this sequence through to get access to the Neighborhood (NBA 2K19’s improved online social space) so if you haven’t played the Prelude demo on the same platform you play the full game, you’ll have to do it from the start.

The NBA 2K series has always been a tough sports sim nut to crack, and NBA 2K19 is no exception. There’s an incredible amount of nuance to everything from ball handling right through to set plays and shooting. 

Head online without mastering these basics and you’ll have an embarrassing number of rings run around you by more experienced ballers. Defence, especially, is a fine art so drill yourself in the game’s finer on-court principles and it will pay dividends in whatever mode you choose to tackle next. This is also a great place to get used to the timing of shots, whether outside the shooting D or close to the net.

The Takeover system is one of the newest additions to the NBA 2K franchise, bringing with it the chance to pull of some pretty slick solo and team maneuvers. You’ll notice a flaming ball and the word ‘Takeover’ in a bar on the top right-hand side of the screen. This bar fills up as you successfully pull of good passes, clean shots and assists. The better you perform, the faster it fills. 

When used, the Takeover metre briefly buffs your stats, helping you pull off trickier shots and evade defenders faster. When you hit 50% you can even pull off a Team Takeover, but beware - mess up and you’ll drain your metre in a heartbeat. 

While Virtual Currency (VC) - the in-game currency you use to progressively upgrade the stats of your MyPlayer - has always been difficult to come by in the NBA 2K series (especially in last year’s instalment). It’s a little easier to accumulate this time around. 

You can use the Daily Spin to earn VC and MyPlayer points, perform well in most match types or - if you’re feeling really adventurous - play for VC on the casino-style Ante Up courts. It’s risky and you really need to know the mechanics of the game inside and out, but you can net some big payouts if you’re good enough. Keep an eye on your Daily Objective too.

Spending a lot of time in the Neighborhood? Need to get from ‘A’ to ‘B’ without tiring yourself out? Sounds like you need a set of wheels to get your around. If you head on over to the cryptically-named Wheels shop, you can purchase skateboards, scooters and more with your hard-earned VC. 

It’s a brand new feature, and an entirely silly one, but it makes navigating this social/online space a lot easier. Unfortunately, you’ll need an OVR of 85 or over to gain access to the shop, so you rookies might need to use your feet for the time being.

Your Turbo represents your athleticism and enables you to sprint when on the court. If you’re trying to force a breakaway or peel off a particularly sticky defender, you need that source of boost ready in a game. To refill it, you’ll need to head to the Gatorade Training Facility in the Neighborhood. Here you can either replenish your Turbo at the bar with VC, or perform three drills in the gym to completely refill it. Considering doing drills actively increases your core stats, we’d always advise you do the drills as it has a dual benefit.

Badges are a sub-system of progress in NBA 2K19 that tracks your performance in individual areas of the game. Everything from movement to three-pointers have their own badge, and the better you perform, the more these badges will level up. The higher their level, the more your basic stats are enhanced. 

It’s a system designed to reward those who put the grind in and go after key areas of play. Head on over to the Team Practice Facility in the Neighborhood and do some drills. You’re limited to three to four a day, and you should never pass up the chance to take them if you want to hit the allusive Level 99. 

NBA 2K19 features the series’ most intelligent UI yet, so it makes sense that it’ll be dogging you just as much as other players will when you venture online. The key to making a shot from the paint that’s far more likely to go in is using the classic ‘pick and roll’ set-piece. Simply press ‘L1’/’LB’ to order the nearest teammate to block or ‘screen’ the defender covering you. Now pull away, and the teammate who was making the screen will peel away towards the basket. With the defender or defenders following you as the ball handler, press ‘X’/’A’ to pass for an easy two point layup/dunk.

Defending, much like previous instalments, is the toughest aspect of NBA 2K19 and it’ll take plenty of time spent in the 2KU tutorials to really get a feel for the mechanics. 

Do not hold down ‘R2’/’RT’ all the time and use your Turbo to stay with a defender - you’ll likely overshoot and potentially leave a gap that will likely lead to a dunk, layup or jump shot. Instead, hold ‘L2’/’LT’ to square your shoulders and drop your hips, now push the right analogue stick towards your marked player. You’re now leaning into them, which will force the defender to try and peel off you to find a new position, potentially removing them as an option for the ball handler.

We know, this sounds like heresy to any basketball fan worth his salt, but if you want to maximise your potential for greatness then you need to have the most time on-court. When you finally make it back to the NBA you can choose from any of the teams in the league, with each one ranked in terms of where you’ll be placed. 

Even if you love the Golden State Warriors of the LA Lakers, avoid them at this stage as you’ll likely be benched with a sliver of actual court time. Instead, plump for a team such as the Grizzlies or the Bucks so you know you'll be getting subbed in (or starting) in every game so you can max out your potential VC and XP.

I have a confession to make, dear reader. I don't really follow football very closely. I'm only vaguely aware that there's some sort of big tournament on right now. But that's okay, because Disney Research and the California Institute of Technology are building an AI that does follow football -- and other sports, too.

Specifically, it's an automated camera system that's learning how best to film matches by watching how human camera operators behave at particular moments. Early testing shows that its shots are far smoother than other automated cameras.

Optical tracking right now isn't really good enough to reliably follow a ball on a pitch, so automated camera systems try to predict the flow of a game by detecting player positions instead. That system isn't perfect, resulting in jittery, jerky footage - especially when it guesses wrong about how a situation will unfold.

Human cameramen, on the other hand, are a lot better at guessing what's going to happen - having seen many similar situations play out in the past. So researchers developed machine learning algorithms that compare the movements made by a robot camera to those made by humans, analysing where the two deviate and learning from those differences.

Smooth and purposeful

"Having smooth camera work is critical for creating an enjoyable sports broadcast," said Peter Carr, a senior research engineer on the project and a co-author on a paper describing it. "The framing doesn't have to be perfect, but the motion has to be smooth and purposeful."

There were times that the robots did a better job than the humans. In one fast break in a basketball game, the human camera operator moved his lens in anticipation of a dunk, while the computer looked at the positions of players and predicted a pass instead. The computer turned out to be right.

In fact, the system was actually a little better at basketball than football in general. Carr said that this is because football players tend to hold their formation, and so their movements give less information about where the camera should look.

"This research demonstrates a significant advance in the use of imitation learning to improve camera planning and control during game conditions," said Jessica Hodgins, vice president at Disney Research. "This is the sort of progress we need to realise the huge potential for automated broadcasts of sports and other live events."

Earlier this month, Psyonix teased a new basketball mode for Rocket League, but didn't reveal anything beyond a screenshot.

Speaking to techradar at GDC 2016, Psyonix Design Director Corey Davis revealed that Hoops mode is set to arrive in April, but with a warning: it'll be turning up the difficulty by a few notches.

Dunking will obviously mean more emphasis on aerial skills, so nailing those trajectories will be more important than ever.

"Thats a concern for us," Corey says when asked about how tough Hoops will be. "It's a lot harder than hockey to pick up and score, and it's kind of a test in terms of, like, is a more hardcore mode going to be received well or not?"

'You don't have to aerial'

"Because it's really fun, especially for dunking, you don't have to aerial. It's fairly possible to hit the ball and have it shoot in like an actual basketball shot."

At the end of last year, Psyonix introduced an ice hockey mode for the holiday season, which eventually became a permanent mutator (special toggles in the game that can alter play).

"In hockey, anyone can score in the first ten seconds, basketball's much harder," Corey says.

But fans won't have long to wait to start practicing their dunking skills. "I think we're shooting for next month, so pretty soon," Corey reveals when asked about a launch date. "It's basically done on our side".
