A very mysterious theme today that could have meant absolutely anything.

With this in mind I went hunting for non-game words to get me a hint (or two) and in the process chanced upon QUESTION.

In truth, the letter Q is where I should have begun if I was a proper Strands player — rare letters often unlock the starts of games.

With this in mind, BUZZER unlocked the theme as it slowly dawned on me that we were searching for elements of a gameshow and in particular Jeopardy!

WHITE STRIPES, STROKES, and HIVES are all alt-rock bands from the same era, but being unable to find a fourth, I added HOLE — whose main period of activity was a decade earlier. I really should have known this was a trap, but I just couldn’t help myself.

Pulling myself together I saw that HIVES instead belonged to a group made up of SYMPTOMS OF AN ALLERGIC REACTION, but it took getting HOOVES, MANE and TAIL before I saw where WHITE STRIPES fitted into a world beyond music.

With eight tiles left, PINS caused me some dilemma as it belonged both in the world of social media (Pinterest, to be precise) and golf. Fortunately, I chose to link it with VINES, TWEETS, and SNAPS instead of ON A GOLF SCORECARD.

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

This happens very rarely to me, but I saw the hardest group immediately today, with PROMPTER and VISION helping me connect GRAM and KINESIS.

It felt like an easy purple, but maybe telegram caught a few people out seeing as they are now a fairly pointless form of communication.

Regardless, I was rewarded with my 50th Purple First badge — it has taken me a while to reach this milestone, with my haphazard play style instead being to just connect the first group I see, rather than looking for the most likely to be a purple. I can’t imagine being that tactical with Connections.

In truth, this felt like a game where any of the groups could have been yellow on any other day, although all of the groups did contain things that have largely disappeared.

The act of writing a letter and sending it to someone in the post has become not just a form of communication from a former time, but also an expensive one.

Organized postal networks date back to Ancient Egypt, while in the UK King Henry VIII founded the Royal Mail in 1516. Today, though, they are not so interested in delivering simple letters and have rebranded their business to compete with parcel delivery companies.

It was with nostalgia, then, that I collected ENVELOPE and LETTERHEAD as I pondered the last time I had used some actual STATIONERY.

What is NYT Strands?

Today was all about the letter I, which featured five times including a double appearance in ICING.

This was also the second day featuring an I-N-G combination — thankfully, I could only think of two words that also included a C, with the other — “cling” — being already ruled out thanks to my starter word “slate”.

I hope I wasn’t the only person to struggle over this game. I had a stinker.

My first mistake was to connect the four mushroom varieties of OYSTER, BUTTON, PORTOBELLO, and TRUMPET. It is annoying when you find a genuine foursome but it is not part of the game.

However, my next mistake was of my own doing: I connected BUBBLE TEA, SAKES, ALEXA and OYSTER, thinking there was some vague Asian connection.

After two very wrong attempts I studied the tiles more closely and got the ANNOUNCE foursome and even the old-fashioned drinks that made up the purple group.

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

Yesterday’s theme was “big talk” and today it’s “small talk”. I’m looking forward to medium talk tomorrow.

Anyway, I digress. After the relatively easy spots of TINY and LITTLE it was on to the more niche descriptions of very small things, with MICROSCOPIC bringing me a little tingle of enjoyment from connecting an 11-letter word.

After yesterday’s odd spangram of “supersizeit” I was expecting a similarly descriptive snake today, so ITSYBITSY took me a while — despite how perfectly it fitted the search. Either way, it's a spangram that demonstrates that small things are more fun than big things.

My mistake came by including FUSE instead of SYNC in the group that became DIGITAL COUPLING VERBS. Although I’d argue that FUSE could be classed as a coupling verb, I attempted this grouping before seeing the far more appropriate CIRCUIT COMPONENTS.

It didn't matter, though, because I managed to score a purple first — in large part this was due to seeing POKER and automatically singing Lady Gaga’s debut chart hit Pokerface.

From there, GAME and STRAIGHT automatically followed, as well as the punchline to the only joke I can ever remember: a depressed horse walks into a bar and the barman asks him “why the long face”?

Meanwhile, THINGS TOILETS DO eluded me.

The letter Z helped me get the spangram — eventually, as I got “size” first, then “supersize” before finally SUPERSIZEIT.

Even though I understood the theme immediately and had an idea of the words we were searching for, I really struggled to put them together .

Although rarely used, LEVIATHAN is an incredible word (it features in the Bible, describing a fire-breathing sea serpent).

I was thinking that it really should be the name of a horror or at least a wrestler when a Google search told me that both already exist; the 1989 horror flick made less cultural impact than Dave Batista, who used the nickname Leviathan before becoming The Animal. Every day’s a school day with Strands.

I made my mistake after successfully threading ATTITUDE, MIND, OPINION and VIEW, although I was thinking about components of a debate rather than a BELIEF.

My error was, of course, confusion over basketball terminology. DOUBLE DRIBBLE and GOALTEND I knew, but instead of TRAVEL I selected SCORE. Which, on reflection, makes no sense.

Meanwhile my confidence over WORDS AFTER “POP” was fragile, but I successfully guessed FLY instead of SCORE. Before googling I thought it was an alternative to a zip fly. I now know it’s a baseball term.

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

Crazy days as the rare letter X makes a second appearance of the week.

Having a B in the third letter position felt weird, then I remembered the old Quordle favorite INBOX.

Even though I didn't get a purple first I was delighted that I managed to get ENDING IN PARTS OF A CAR at all, as I know nothing about automobiles whatsoever.

This particular group needed translating fromAmerican English to UK English for me, because here a trunk is a boot and a spoiler is a bumper.

GRAND FINALE was simple, although EPILOGUE feels the odd one out of the quartet as it’s possible to have an ending to a career and then have an EPILOGUE years later — a movie star returning as a director, for example, or a boxer ill-advisedly coming out of retirement to punch a YouTuber.

Initially I thought we would be looking for synonyms of the word category, but instead we were on the hunt for the four of the six segments — or cheeses — that complete a game piece in TRIVIALPURSUIT.

Missing from the list are history and science.

Spotting ENTERTAINMENT — a tricky word to hide — kicked things off for me, with the letter V helping me connect the spangram. All in all a good deal shorter than an actual game of TRIVIALPURSUIT.

Looking at today’s game after I completed it, I don’t understand why I failed to see SHADES OF BLACK as it is the only group that I could have actually got right.

The other three groups were the result of muddled game play and lucky guesses — particularly STARTING WITH TINY MARKS, which I didn’t get because I spotted dot, period, point and spot, but because all the tiles were made up of two words.

Before that, though, I made the mistake of putting together what I thought were four different types of printer. Hopefully I wasn't the only player to fall into that trap, but in truth it doesn't take much to catch me.

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

Rerouting… is a word I used to see a lot when I used a sat nav in my car, so this is exactly the theme I was expecting — but I still struggled over it.

It’s not until you play Strands that you realize how many different ways there are to say the same thing, in this case a change of direction.

I took a hint to get going, but TACK didn’t help much. Then, I connected the two Zs for ZIGZAG and finally got motoring.

Despite not making any mistakes I am classifying this game as tricky, because I came close to an error in collecting four unrelated sporting things.

THINGS WITH LACES also favors anyone familiar with FOOTBALL, as my mind went to soccer balls — which haven’t had laces since the 1960s.

I also got lucky in spotting the purple group after thinking all of the things that WIGGLE could be connected to and saying “wiggle room” to myself. I hate the idea of being in tight, crowded spots, so wiggle room is always on my mind.

Just four long words made up today’s game, but that didn’t make the search any easier.

I am more familiar with a slight variation on today’s theme — rose-tinted spectacles — which I had viewed as meaning to look favorably on something you are biased towards (such as the fortunes of your team). But the words here leaned more towards fanaticism.

Regardless of interpretation I needed a hint to get going and was rewarded with QUIXOTIC, a word I would have failed to see otherwise. From here I found the other two words with a T-I-C ending, before the spangram helped me to locate IMPRACTICAL.

Today’s search takes from the high-born of the seating world (THRONE), to the lowest (BEANBAG).

If I am going to make myself comfortable then I would pick the BEANBAG any day. Although it does depend on how long you’ve owned it; a baggy bean bag is nobody’s friend. Having said that, I’ve not sat in many thrones. Or indeed any, but judging by House of the Dragon, they’re not particularly ergonomic.

Anyway, it was hard not to whizz around today’s game, with even the longest and most obscure word, OTTOMAN, being easy to spot thanks to the double T.

With PICNIC, LAUNDRY and GROCERY locked in I made the mistake of selecting BARGAIN instead of EASTER.

There was logic to my error. My parents used to run a grocery store and they would put items that were close to their sell-by date or damaged in a basket that became known as the BARGAIN basket. I thought it was a universal thing, but maybe not.

The next two groups came pretty easily, especially the four tiles that made up the yellow CONTRACT group, as they are words that seem to be constantly in the news in regards to negotiations surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

Without a clue with the final eight tiles I made three mistakes before finally getting the FICTIONAL CATS foursome.

I was mystified as I played this game but I now know that buss — as featured at the start of BUSSIN — is a very old word for kiss that fell out of favor in the 1600s. Due for a comeback, then.

Meanwhile, I had no idea what the connection for BUCKET, DRAWER, MUG and UMBRELLA was, beyond vaguely thinking you could carry water in all of them (not that you see many people carrying water in a drawer).

Not my finest game.

Fortunately, the board was brimming with non-game words, including a couple of uncommonly long ones, so I took a hint.

However, even after getting PLEASANT I still didn’t understand the search and labored over the remaining three words and the Woodhousean spangram.

There was only one word that contained two of the same letter — LARVA — and realizing that was a probability with L, A, and R in incorrect positions helped me finish without any stress.

That said, this was a particularly charmed game for me, with my starter words giving me two simple anagrams.

For anyone based outside of the US, like me in the UK, this game had an added layer of difficulty thanks to Connections’ fondness for candy brands and state capitals.

By now, of course, I should be fully aware of the many varieties of candies — some of which admittedly have travelled beyond the US to cause dental issues around the world — but compressed dextrose delight SPREE is not one I have heard of.

Somehow, though, I floundered my way through with just two mistakes.

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

It took me a while to see BAGEL and DELI, possibly because I don’t associate them uniquely with New York, but this slight delay aside today’s game was a breeze.

I even managed to spot the spangram before any game words — EMPIRESTATE towering from the top to the bottom of the board, much like the magnificent building — earning myself the Spangram First 100 times badge.

As Alicia Keys sang, “concrete jungle where dreams are made of” — although this possibly doesn’t apply if your dream is acing word searches.

Congratulations if you spotted the DOUBLE LETTERS APPEARING IN THAT LETTER'S ALPHABETICAL POSITION.

I did momentarily think the double-A in AARDVARK was significant, but the other groups came together so easily I put it to one side.

A sign of an easy, universally gettable game is not just how quickly you complete the four groups, but also how common it is that you complete it in difficulty order.

That was the case for me today, although with the exception of the purple any of the groups would qualify as a yellow on other day. My brain is struggling to think of anything other than England vs Norway in the World Cup, so I’m grateful for the time off.

I have never sampled the delights of a tuna casserole, so I went on a Google search after completing today’s game and found dozens of variations to the Strands recipe including the addition of lime, swapping the noodles for macaroni, and adding a potato chips topping.

It seems easy to make so I’m going to give it a go — but without the MILK.

Meanwhile, despite my culinary blank, I managed to navigate the board without any issues. A tasty start to the weekend.

Is it possible to look at today’s theme and not say to yourself “... therefore I am”? Apparently it is, because the words that complete “I think…” here were instead the more seemingly everyday “we can make it”.

Thinking that I was missing out on some cultural reference point I googled all of today’s game words, along with the spangram, and the AI result claimed that all the words feature in the 17th-century Irish Jacobite love song, Mo Ghile Mear (My Gallant Hero). And there was me thinking it was from Ted Lasso or a Taylor Swift song I’d not heard of.

Despite my ignorance I was able to navigate the game without using any hints.

There were a number of fashion links among today's tiles: A LA MODE, of course, STRIKE A POSE — which features in Madonna’s Vogue — BALL GOWN, and DEPECHE MODE, which was the name of a French fashion magazine.

What caught me out, however, was the SMARTPHONE SETTINGS, as I originally included SAFE MODE instead of DO NOT DISTURB.

Today’s game also featured my two favorite bands — PET SHOP BOYS and NEW ORDER, both of whom joined forces in the 1990s with Electronic and who still tour together occasionally.

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

The first sight of this theme made me think of the old weight-loss mantra “a moment on the lip, a lifetime on the hips” intended to warn dieters off the brief pleasure of a potato chip, as opposed to the lifelong delight of a slender physique.

I digress, as we weren’t looking for dieting advice but instead things that could be applied to lips — of which there are many possibilities.

Fortunately, despite the high number of words in the search they were all short and easy to spot, with the biggest challenge provided by the 13-letter-long spangram.

A charmed game without mistakes.

As a former music journalist I was duty bound to connect the four MUSIC PUBLICATIONS in BILLBOARD, ROLLING STONE, SPIN and PITCHFORK, and was rewarded with a green.

Fortunately, I also resisted the temptation of linking VIRGIN and PRAYER in a cobbled together Madonna grouping, deciding instead that PRAYER and SHAG must have something to do with carpeting.

With eight tiles left I took a risk collecting the four tiles I thought sounded vaguely like sporty cars and got lucky.

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

I am sure I was not the only one making a mistake by connecting THREAD, SHAVE, WAX, and PLUCK, thinking they were all ways to eliminate body hair. Anyone who has ever been to a Turkish barber will know that there’s another way, too!

Alas, it turned out to be a dastardly red herring.

After my error I was able to get the other groups easily enough, although I did hesitate over TAP in the GUITAR-PLAYING TECHNIQUES group.

There were a few different ways to connect LITTLE and DEVIL and I think I tried them all before finally getting a rare, for me at least, spangram first.

The rest of the board was far trickier. After getting SCAMP I used a hint but even with it I struggled to see HELLION — not a word I’ve ever heard before.

Next the non-game word “scallion” helped me see RAPSCALLION before my misery was ended with the brilliantly old-fashioned WHIPPERSNAPPER — a great word, but possibly not one you use when reporting “trouble” to the police.

As is often the case with five-vowel games, this was a tricky.

It took me an age of experimentation and head scratching before I finally saw KIOSK after putting the three letters I knew in the I-O-S order and seeing if anything would fit either end. What a relief to get there in the end!

The game of Clue has come up a couple of times in Connections — previously we had weapons and characters — and although I’ve never played it I was familiar with Colonel Mustard and somehow knew that a candlestick could be used as murder weapon.

This time, though, I got ROOMS IN CLUE just because they were also, erm rooms.

My mistake came in trying to make sense of the final eight tiles, first making an utterly random quartet and then taking some time and spotting Bert, Ernie, Count and Elmo.

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

I was having a merry old ride around this board until the final word and spangram slowed me down to a standstill.

Spangrams like IGETAROUND really are my nemesis and I came close, but not that close, to using a hint, but thankfully saw the unseasonal SLEIGH just in time before I disappeared into a letter-soup haze.

Finding non-game words was actually a good deal harder and I struggled to find the six required for this page.

I would use cultural differences as the reason why I didn’t see SCIENCE FAIR MODEL SUBJECTS, but it is such a sitcom trope that I have no real excuse for being blind to the concept of a cardboard VOLCANO exploding with vinegar and red food coloring.

Much easier was spotting STARTING WITH DATING APPS, made easier by seeing tiles for BUMBLEBEE and TINDERBOX beside each other.

My mistake came with the blue group — I wasn’t thinking about catching a roadrunner, but I did I think that EARTHQUAKE PILLS, IRON BIRD SEED and ROCKET SKATES did all sound like crazy inventions, so I added THUNDERBOLT thinking it might be some kind of tool.

After getting one away, I realized ACME PRODUCTS was the link.
