The 2026 Monaco Grand Prix live streams will likely see Kimi Antonelli extend his lead in the Drivers' Championship ahead of teammate George Russell, who is starting P6 after finishing nearly four-tenths adrift of the 19-year-old Italian in qualifying.

Russell admitted that the changes to this year's car do not suit his driving style and said he has been left "bamboozled" by his drop in pace. Although Antonelli is starting on pole, he'll have to watch out for the ever-threatening Max Verstappen in P2 and the fast-starting Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton in P3, especially considering his own subpar race starts this season.

Speaking of Ferrari, this is the first time that Charles Leclerc has been outqualified by his teammate at his home race. Leclerc briefly held pole position in Q3 but hit the wall on his final lap and ultimately had to settle for P4 ahead of Isack Hadjar, who proved that Red Bull has some pace around here, particularly compared to McLaren.

Despite finishing P3 in the sprint race in Canada, Kimi Antonelli bounced back strongly to claim victory on Sunday in Montreal, albeit aided by car-related DNFs for George Russell and Lando Norris. The latter two will be the least of his worries in Monaco, as he'll now be up against 4-time champion Max Verstappen and 7-time champion Lewis Hamilton at the front.

The Papaya team came into Monaco looking to start afresh, especially after a horrible weekend in Montreal where they failed to score a single point between their two cars in the main race. But P7 and P8 starts mean they'll likely have to settle for single-digit points.

The biggest story this weekend, though, has been Ferrari. After dominating FP1 and FP2 and giving the Tifosi hope that a double podium was highly likely, they fell away when it mattered most in qualifying. They'll be starting on the second row, but with virtually no long straights in Monaco – which is why we won't be seeing Straight Mode at all – one of their biggest weaknesses this season should be far less of a factor.

All that said, the fact remains that Monaco is the most difficult circuit on the calendar to overtake. Last year, there were just four on-track overtakes all race, and while this year's cars are 10 cm narrower, that is unlikely to change the fundamental nature of the race.

Formula 1 is one of the most popular sports in the world today, boasting over 827 million highly passionate fans across the world in 2025, all tuning in to watch wins, losses, crashes, and (occasionally) disqualifications.

To say Formula 1 fans get emotional is an understatement, and when there is a chance to win, many will go to extreme lengths to watch it happen - and not always legitimately - and for a threat actor, that pool of 827 million fans is an unmissable opportunity.

But participation goes beyond just watching the sport. The allure of cheap or discounted merchandise, dubious free streaming services, and the too-good-to-be-true offers play on the high-stakes nature of the sport, and the emotions of passionate fans - we spoke to security giants (and Ferrari partners) Bitdefender to find out more.

Bitdefender Threat Index

At Pista di Fiorano, Ferrari’s private racetrack in Italy, I was part of a group of journalists given exclusive access to Bitdefender’s Fan Threat Index, which has collated data on the threats facing fans since March 2025.

Bogdan Botezatu, Senior Director of Threat Research & Reporting at Bitdefender, was on hand to guide us through the report.

“Scams are evolving. Last year, cybercrime was making about $9 trillion in losses at the global scale. Out of that $9 trillion slice, about $1 trillion is responsible for scamming,” he said. “This Fan Threat Index is our response to how scams are evolving.”

The Formula 1 teams themselves face a huge array of threats. There is the potential for not only malware and ransomware, but also physical infiltration to steal intellectual property and secrets - and that is why teams form partnerships exactly like Ferrari’s partnership with Bitdefender, which can offer the teams the expertise and solutions they need to stay protected.

“At home though, things are fundamentally different,” Botezatu notes. “When things are moving fast, people make mistakes, and those mistakes cost.”

He explains there are four major threats that Formula 1 fans face. “The motorsport ecosystem is dominated by speed; you have to source tickets fast; you have to get the right merchandise from the right vendor; you have to find a streaming partner to watch the show at home; you have to face that emotional involvement that happens on race weekend.”

Last minute tickets and counterfeit merchandise

The ultimate thrill for a Formula 1 fan is almost certainly the opportunity to watch a race in person. In order to make cheap or discounted tickets even more alluring, scammers will seek to lower the cost of entry by offering ticket lotteries and giveaways.

Attending in the merchandise of a fan’s chosen team adds to the allure, and these forms of scam usually spike in the run up to a race as eager fans look for last minute tickets, and finalize their race-day outfits.

The main target for scammers is the theft of financial information. Drawn in by the urgency of an “80% OFF” banner and a storefront that looks legitimate, many fans will trade their banking details for a knock-off hat.

These websites are hosted on short-lived domains that are quickly recycled once the event is over, and are most commonly disseminated through social media.

“These cybercrime groups are using stolen accounts that have credit cards attached to boost promoted posts,” Botezatu explains. “That's how they reach the right audiences, and that’s how they advertise their offers in front of the right people.”

“They are maximizing their profits using social media tactics,” he adds, explaining that they can abuse the data social media conglomerates such as Meta collect on users to serve their adverts and promoted posts to people of a specific demographic, in a specific geographic area, or those above a specific income.

Free streaming serving up malware

As the build-up to a race reaches its highest intensity, threat actors will begin offering free streaming services to fans desperate to tune in. These websites won’t necessarily only show Formula 1, but will serve a range of content from around the world to funnel in as many users as possible.

In many cases, the dubious streaming service will require that you install a VPN in order to watch. While this is sometimes a legitimate way to watch content that typically would not be available in a user’s region, the services these streaming providers offer are sometimes far from legitimate.

In a best case scenario, Botezatu explains, you’ll end up purchasing a legitimate streaming service that you don’t actually need and you still won’t be able to watch the race, but it will provide the service owner with a source of affiliate revenue. “Worst case, that VPN kit will be malware. and you’re going to infect your computer or device.”

For those on Android devices, some services will require the installation of a third-party video player in order to access a stream, and again, you will install malware. In these circumstances, Botezatu notes, the malware will often monitor your clipboard or your screen to track everything you type into your device, including sensitive banking and financial information.

The alternative some fans turn to is the dodgy-streaming dongle. Where legitimate streaming dongles such as the Amazon Fire Stick start from around $30, some groups will disseminate streaming dongles with preinstalled software for far less, and sometimes at a loss.

While a fan may feel like they’re just got a great deal and free access to every upcoming race, the reality is far sinister. “The people who are selling these are using Formula 1 as a pretext for you to open a proxy; an exit node in a VPN used for cybercrime,” Botezatu says.

“These people give you hardware for free, but instead can sell access to your household to various cybercrime groups that are doing money laundering, illegal content distribution, child pornography, all sorts of things,” he adds.

These devices use your IP address to distribute their illegal content, meaning that when law enforcement investigates these crimes, it could be your house they’re raiding.

Social engineering to dodge antivirus

Hollywood and modern TV has taught many people that hacking is a highly complex, intelligent pursuit that requires the layman to say, “In English, damn it!”

But the malware distribution scams Bitdefender has spotted targeting some Formula 1 fans are incredibly simple that they border on genius.

Those in the know may have heard of ClickFix attacks, whereby an attacker presents the user with a problem that needs to be solved in order to access a website or service. When many of us are presented with a CAPTCHA to solve, we recognize the familiarity of the branding and will trust that it's legitimate.

But ClickFix attacks abuse this trust, and rather than clicking on all the bicycles in an image, the user will instead be prompted to open the Windows Terminal using a keyboard shortcut, and then use the “Ctrl” + “V” shortcut to paste in a line of code that the hacker has snuck into the clipboard.

For many antivirus suites, even first-rate protection, this activity appears to be legitimate human activity. The antivirus will do nothing to stop it, and the code will launch a powershell application that immediately installs infostealing software onto the infected device. The infostealer will then harvest browser passwords, session cookies, saved credit cards, VPN credentials, and email access - leading to even bigger problems for fans.

Our advice to Formula 1 fans? Always be on your guard when hunting for online streams, tickets and merch sales, and other linked activity - and remember, if an offer feels like it could be too good to be true, then it probably is.

Miami Grand Prix 2026 preview

While the TV cameras will inevitably spend much of their time hunting out celebrities in the crowd in Miami this weekend, the action on the tarmac comes at a fascinating time for the championship. The enforced month-long break will have given engineers the chance to tinker under the hoods, while every driver on the grid will have been playing the twists and turns in the 5.4km track over and over in their minds.

Miami is a happy hunting ground for reigning F1 champion Lando Norris – he took his maiden victory here in 2024. And, seeing that teammate Oscar Piastri topped the podium last year, McLaren will be hopeful of a return to winning ways after their disastrous start to the 2026 season. They've promised a 'completely new car' in order to kickstart their campaign.

Mercedes, on the other hand, must be cock-a-hoop at how the year has gone so far. Three wins from three will have been beyond their wildest dreams at the start of 2026, and Kimi Antonelli and George Russell will see Miami as a golden opportunity to entrench themselves at the top of the standings. The Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and seven-time champ Lewis Hamilton have also made big strides, however, and will be desperate to record their first victory of the season here.

The part-street track, part-traditional circuit of the Miami Autodrome makes it a difficult beast to master, with exceptionally fast straights reigned in by plenty of tough turns. In their first home Grand Prix, the Cadillac team will be eager to capitalize, with Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Pérez still seeking the constructor's first ever point in Formula 1.

Watch the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix live streams to see whether Kimi Antonelli can continue his blistering form after his win in Shanghai. With a pole position at Suzuka, the young Mercedes driver is in prime position to secure back-to-back victories. If both Mercedes cars hold their qualifying positions, Antonelli could head into Miami as the Drivers’ Championship leader.

Russell admitted after qualifying that changes to the rear suspension didn’t work in his favour. And while he adapted well enough to secure P2, he still ended up 0.298s behind Antonelli. While Mercedes’ dominance may not come as a surprise, it’s refreshing to see McLaren back in the mix alongside Ferrari.

Oscar Piastri appears to have shaken off a difficult start to the season, securing a second-row start. He lines up alongside Charles Leclerc, who has had a challenging weekend extracting performance from his Ferrari.

Ferrari seem to have lost some momentum, but team boss Fred Vasseur is optimistic that a new championship could begin in Miami. As for Suzuka, Lewis Hamilton starts P6, but given their strong launches, both red cars could be in the top four by the first corner.

Unfortunately, it was another disappointing qualifying for Max Verstappen. He’ll start P11, having been out-qualified by his teammate Isack Hadjar for the second time this season.

Can Ferrari, which looked better in China than in Australia, push even closer to challenging Mercedes’ dominance? Unfortunately, Japan so far hasn't looked very neat for them, and with McLaren back in the fight, the fight for that third podium place has only gotten more intense.

Antonelli, after picking up his first-ever F1 win in Shanghai, is now a serious title contender alongside George Russell. We will also likely see an end to Max Verstappen’s dominance at Suzuka. He has won the last four races here, but with Red Bull now firmly in the midfield, he’s unfortunately far off from challenging the top teams.

Speaking of top teams, McLaren had a shocker in China, recording a double DNS, both related to power unit systems. It’s worth noting that they run the Mercedes power unit, but so far haven’t been able to extract performance the way Mercedes has. Oscar Piastri, in fact, has not started either of the two races this season, so he’ll be keen to get off the line cleanly in Japan.

Of course, the new energy management system will be the talk of the paddock throughout the weekend. While Suzuka is a fast track, it also features several significant braking zones, creating opportunities for energy harvesting. That could lead to more overtaking at a circuit not traditionally known for it.

The young Italian had a troubling sprint race where he was slow off the line and also received a 10-second penalty for colliding with Isack Hadjar. As expected, George Russell won the sprint race, albeit not without fighting with the two Ferrari drivers who completed the podium.

The qualifying session in Shanghai had some extra spice, courtesy of George Russell’s late troubles. The British driver didn’t have any battery or tyre temperature readings heading into Q3, and he only had enough time for one lap. He still managed to secure P2, locking out the front row for Mercedes on Sunday.

Will the much-debated “super clipping” proves as problematic as experts believe, especially given the Shanghai International Circuit’s long straights? However, the circuit also has several heavy braking zones, particularly in sector two, which could suit the new regulations and make for some exciting wheel-to-wheel battles.

Energy management will again be key this weekend, but the sprint format complicates things slightly, as drivers and teams will have little time to nail their energy deployment tactics.

Speaking of drivers and teams, Mercedes, led by George Russell, head into the race as favorites, but if Ferrari can build on the promise they showed in Albert Park and in the sprint race on Saturday, they could very well challenge at the front.

As for Red Bull, Max Verstappen, speaking during the drivers’ press conference, admitted it’s still too early to know whether they can close the gap to the front. Lando Norris dominated last season and Oscar Piastri has the Melbourne crowd on his side, so this will work in McLaren's favour. However, Mercedes is looking good with qualifying yesterday seeing the team put themselves in prime position.

Who will prevail? We'll soon see...

Oscar Piastri is out the race!

The Aussie has had a disaster right out the gate with substantial damage to his car before the race has even begun!

Heartbreaking scenes in his hometown of Melbourne as he clips the side and reties his car for the Grand Prix.

Piastri will not be able to compete so Lando Norris is the only one who can take home points for McLaren.

The Aussie fans are in tears.

McLaren team devastated

It's hard to convey how much of a blow this is to McLaren and the home crowd.

No one expected someone as accomplished as Oscar to be out before the race had even started but the show must go on.

As the fifth position, this means everyone will move up one including his teammate who was sixth and now will take Oscar's vacant spot.

One less car to pass, it certainly helps everyone down the line.

In a twist no one saw coming the veteran driver Fernando Alonso has rejoined the race after fixing his car in the pit.

He's a lap behind everyone so unless there's a miracle he will probably stay languishing in last place. You've got to admire him regardless.

Ferrari's bold strategy

Ferrari are attempting to do the whole race with just one pit stop. It's certainly a bold strategy, will it pay it off?

Mercedes and McLaren have also asked their team to do the same but their drivers were not confident in that strategy and opted for a second pit stop, including Norris who managed a very quick 2.5 second pit stop.

It's a gamble and could backfire massively.

A consistent top four

It's fair to say that Mercedes and Ferrari have dominated the top four positions so far, nothing if not consistent.

With less than 20 laps, Mercedes have their drivers in the number one and two spot but let's see how that pit strategy pays off.

Aston Martin's drivers are both out!

We've focused so much on the front of the race that we didn't see Stroll, the only remaining driver from Aston Martin is now out!

That means Aston Martin will score a big fat zero for the Australian Grand Prix, their cars have failed to be up to snuff so far.

Battery power is a big part of this season and the drivers are all learning through trial and error what's working for them. Time will tell if this affects the final result.

Will Mercedes and Ferrari drivers overtake each other?

It's possible for Russell to be overtaken by Antonelli. It's also possible for Hamilton to overtake Leclerc. But will either teammate overtake the other?

It'll certainly be a tense locker room if so but keep watching to find out!

Russell from the UK crosses the line first for Mercedes, with his Italian teammate Antonelli closing second place.

Lerclerc and Hamilton take third and fourth, with the Brit missing out on the podium once more which he'll surely be gutted about.

Ferrari will be happy with this, probably keeping an eye on their main competitor Mercedes for the rest of the season.

Well, the first win of the season is an important one and Russell has secured it for Mercedes.

Will this put him in a good spot for the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai? Only time will tell.

Watch Australian Grand Prix 2026 live streams for the first glimpse into what could be a fruitful season for the Silver Arrows, as George Russell and Kimi Antonelli lock out the front row for the season opener at Albert Park in Melbourne.

Max Verstappen was indeed very right when he said during pre-season testing that Mercedes would be the benchmark, as the qualifying session largely became a fight between Russell and Antonelli for pole. In the end, the more senior driver took the prize, snatching provisional pole away from the 19-year-old by going +0.293s quicker.

Even more frightening for the other 10 teams is the gap Mercedes managed to create. Isack Hadjar, who delivered a superb performance for Red Bull and secured the best qualifying result of his career with third place, finished +0.785s behind Russell. Charles Leclerc was right behind him in fourth, just 0.024s off. Hometown hero Oscar Piastri will start fifth, while defending champion Lando Norris lines up sixth on the grid.

The biggest shock of the first qualifying session of the season was Verstappen’s crash. The Red Bull driver slammed into the wall after his rear axle locked up – something he said had never happened to him before. Verstappen also appeared frustrated with the new regulations, saying he feels “completely empty” while driving and that he’ll enjoy GT3 racing more than Formula One.

Several top drivers, including Leclerc, Norris, and Lewis Hamilton, have already admitted that beating Mercedes will be a very tough task this season. Even Hadjar admitted that his focus will simply be on holding onto third place, with both Norris and Leclerc suggesting that, at least for now, the top two spots may already belong to Mercedes.

Elsewhere, rookie Arvid Lindblad impressed with a strong debut qualifying performance, securing ninth place on the grid. Audi also exceeded expectations, with both of their cars finishing 10th and 11th.

A new era for Formula 1 begins at Albert Park, Melbourne, with the sport's most transformative season in years also starting with a first-time defending champion in the form of McLaren's Lando Norris.

Formula 1 is dynamic, uncertain, and constantly changing – much like the F1 2026 drivers. You have the 'pay drivers' who essentially bring sponsorship money, the young rookies (see: Arvid Lindblad), and the legends.

Arvid Lindblad makes his long-awaited F1 debut

Eighteen-year-old British driver Arvid Lindblad will be the only rookie on the Formula 1 grid in 2026 – a stark contrast to 2025, when six new drivers made their debuts, including Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), Ollie Bearman (Haas), Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber), Jack Doohan (Alpine), and Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls)

Lindblad joins Red Bull’s sister team Racing Bulls, replacing Hadjar after the Frenchman earned a promotion to the senior Red Bull team alongside Max Verstappen.

While new to a full-time Formula 1 seat, Lindblad already boasts an impressive résumé. The Red Bull junior became the youngest race winner in both Formula 3 and Formula 2, claiming victories at just 16 and 17 years old respectively. His rapid rise through the junior ranks also included winning the prestigious WSK Euro Series in 2021 – a title previously claimed by drivers such as Charles Leclerc and Kimi Antonelli.

Lindblad has already had a taste of Formula 1 machinery, completing two FP1 sessions for Red Bull last season and impressing team bosses Laurent Mekies and Helmut Marko during previous car testing programs.

Returning drivers back on the F1 grid

Along with a new F1 team – Cadillac will expand the grid to 22 drivers – come two returning names: Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez, both seasoned drivers with over 500 Formula 1 race starts between them. After missing out on an F1 seat in 2025, Cadillac will hope the veterans can bring crucial experience and newfound enthusiasm to the new outfit.

Perez was let go by Red Bull following a troubling 2024 season, during which he was replaced first by Liam Lawson and then Yuki Tsunoda. Bottas, meanwhile, spent the year on the sidelines as a reserve driver for Mercedes. But having worked inside championship-winning environments, they know the culture, structure, and mentality it takes to build a successful Formula 1 team.

Both drivers have also come close to the ultimate prize before, each finishing as a runner-up in the drivers’ championship during their careers. But after years spent as dependable wingmen at the front of the grid, the question now is whether Bottas and Perez can turn a new chapter with Cadillac.

Drivers switching teams for 2026

Only one driver, Isack Hadjar, has switched teams from the 2025 season heading into 2026. He previously raced for Red Bull’s sister team, Racing Bulls, where he seriously impressed, even securing his first podium at Zandvoort – albeit with help from Lando Norris’ technical retirement.

The question now is whether he can meet both the expectations and the pressure of that second Red Bull seat, which has been something of a revolving door in recent years. The position has seen multiple changes, from Pierre Gasly to Alex Albon, then Sergio Perez, before short stints from Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda.

“Wait for Melbourne,” is what Max Verstappen said during the Bahrain pre-season press conference, hinting that several teams, including Toto Wolff’s Mercedes, may still be holding back their true pace until the curtain rises at the Australian Grand Prix. Despite the plethora of changes, the top four remains the same: McLaren, Red Bull, Mercedes, and Ferrari. However, the Australian GP will likely provide the first real indication of how the pecking order might shape up, including how new entrants Cadillac and Audi, as well as rookie Arvid Lindblad, go about their business. And even though early sentiments suggest George Russell could be poised for his first Drivers’ Championship, it all comes down to which team adapts fastest to the new regulations.

The 2026 season marks the beginning of a divisive new F1 era, one marked by an increased emphasis on energy management. Watch Qatar Grand Prix live streams as McLaren attempt to undo last weekend's cataclysmic disqualification of both cars for technical infringements. Norris will become champion if he wins today's race, or beats Piastri by four points or finishes ahead of Verstappen, but after Saturday's Sprint race and qualifying session it was his Australian teammate who came up strong. Piastri stormed to pole position, edging Norris by 0.108 seconds on the front row. Norris looked quick but had to abort his final lap and will want to start well.

Verstappen is third on the grid and complained of a 'bouncing' Red Bull during qualifying. The Dutchman will have to overcome that if he's to have any chance of retaining his title. A further 0.011secs behind Verstappen was Russell, followed by his Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli in fifth, ahead of the Racing Bulls of Isack Hadjar

Earlier on Saturday, Piastri won an eventful Sprint ahead of Norris in second to narrow the gap to his title rival, with Verstappen moving up from sixth on the grid to finish fourth. George Russell in the Mercedes finished third.

It was another horrible session for seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, though, who qualified stone-cold last in 20th place after he was knocked out in the first session while complaining he couldn't get temperature into his tyres amid the treacherous weather conditions.

"I don't really have words for it," said an aghast Hamilton. "It's obviously not good enough."

Can Norris overcome his own personal demons of the previous couple of seasons to take the title he's come so close to? He's determined to win here and lay down a marker with conditions expected to be dry (just about) for today's race.

Watch Sao Paulo Grand Prix live streams as McLaren's Lando Norris starts a race weekend in the title lead for the first time since April. The Briton will keep his eyes peeled for teammate Oscar Piastri and in-form defending champion Max Verstappen with 132 points up for grabs in the last four Grands Prix of a fascinating 2025 season.

The biggest surprise of the qualifying session, though, was Verstappen who failed to make it out of the opening session and will start down in 16th. It was the Dutchman's first Q1 elimination since 2021.

Norris recovered from a mistake early in the final session to clock a superb time when it mattered most at a track he has dominated all weekend thus far.

Verstappen was imperious in the Red Bull at last weekend's United States Grand Prix, winning the Sprint and then dominating race day to cut the gap to championship leader Piastri to 40 points. It's a lot, but the four-time world champion has won three of the past four races to reduce the deficit from closer to 100 during the Dutchman's midseason toils.

"For sure, the chance is there," said Verstappen post-race. "We just need to try and deliver these weekends until the end."

In finally overtaking Ferrari's Charles Leclerc into second place with five laps remaining, Norris put himself to within 14 points of McLaren teammate Piastri, who was only able to finish fifth behind Lewis Hamilton. In so doing the eight-time world champion equalled his best performance of the season in the other Ferrari.

McLaren's struggles in recent weeks, particularly championship leader Piastri who has gone three grands prix without a podium, will be a worry and the team will be determined to reestablish some authority in Mexico. But has the momentum definitively swung back to Verstappen's Red Bull? And will McLaren's determination not to deploy team order to ensure the drivers' championship ultimately backfire?

Piastri and Norris took each other out just after the start of the Sprint, as the former tried to surge from third on the grid but clipped the Sauber of Nico Hulkenberg to career into Norris and take out both McLarens, plus Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin. It comes after Norris remains on the naughty step after overtaking his teammate last time out in Singapore.

Singapore Grand Prix 2025 preview

Whatever way you spin it, the Azerbaijan GP two weeks ago couldn't have gone much worse for McLaren. While the constructors title is all but theirs and they've surely built up enough of a lead to win a long awaited Drivers' Championship, more than a flutter of nervousness will have greeted Piastri's first-lap crash and Norris limping to a seventh place finish.

The vision of four-time champ Max Verstappen celebrating at the top of the podium won't have helped, either. We suspect that Andrea Stella will have been showing his drivers plenty of videos of last year's Singapore Grand Prix ahead of this weekend, in which Norris took top honors and Piastri finished third. Indeed, Singapore is the only race on the calendar that the Flying Dutchman hasn't won.

As ever, it is going to be hot and humid in Singapore, with temperatures around the 85°F/30°C mark. This has seen the FIA declare it's first ever 'heat hazard' warning which will allow the drivers an option to fit a cooling vest to their cars. It also won't be helpful for the tyre degradation with medium and hard tyres expected to be the way forward.

The practice sessions on Friday could be interrupted by some heavy downpours, but Saturday and Sunday are looking more promising, with a 20% chance of rain given for both days.

Watch Azerbaijan Grand Prix live streams with all eyes again likely to be on McLaren team-mates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris as they battle it out for the 2025 Formula 1 drivers' championship.

Norris marginally narrowed the gap two weekends ago at the Italian Grand Prix, as team orders after a botched pitstop put the Briton back above Piastri and into second place on the day, though the Australian still leads the standings by 31 points and won in Baku 12 months ago. Norris had looked the stronger of the two all weekend. Another good weekend for the pair could clinch the constructors' title with seven races to spare.

There was more chaos at the Baku City Circuit in qualifying, with a record six red flags at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday. Ultimately, Max Verstappen posted 1min 41.117sec to sit at the front of the grid, with Carlos Sainz in the Williams unexpectedly completing the front row.

Championship rivals Norris and Piastri will start seventh and ninth respectively on the grid, with the latter crashing and the former failing to produce a solid final lap. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc also crashed to qualify in 10th.

Mercedes pair Kimi Antonelli and George Russell sit fifth and sixth, but Lewis Hamilton was unable to back up good Friday speed in practice into qualifying. The eight-time world champion didn't make it in Q3 and will start in 12th place.

Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2025 preview

Lando Norris and championship leader Oscar Piastri will continue their duel to become world champion, with the former trailing the latter by 31 points. Norris narrowed the gap last weekend with a strong showing at Monza.

Not as strong, however, as a resurgent Max Verstappen, who took the checkered flag after posting the fastest pole position time in F1 history in qualifying. The Dutchman has struggled with a Red Bull that hasn't been up to speed this season, but Monza provided proof of an improving car and the four-time champion's enduring class.

Piastri was a cut above the rest of the paddock a week ago in the Netherlands, taking a clean sweep of pole position, fastest lap and race win to move 34 points clear at the top of the standings after title rival Norris had to retire from second place with seven laps to go because of an oil leak.

There was plenty of incident, with Max Verstappen taking second and 20-year-old French rookie Isack Hadjar picking up a first career podium in third place for the Racing Bulls.

Lewis Hamilton crashed out at a hairpin, with Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc also retiring. At their home grand prix at Monza, the Scuderia have plenty to reflect on after another disappointing performance, which will be even harder for seven-time world champion Hamilton, who has a five-place grid penalty for failing to slow for double yellow flags at the start of last week's race.

All eyes, though, will be on teammates and title rivals Piastri and Norris. With only eight races to go after Sunday's race at the venerable Monza, the Australian and Briton will be desperate to record a victory.

Max Verstappen produced a staggering display to post not only pole position but also the quickest lap ever seen in an F1 race. The Dutchman's time of one minute 18.792 seconds beat Lewis Hamilton's record set at Monza in 2020 but just over 0.1s and averaged a speed of 164.466mph.

Lando Norris was second-quickest with his last run of the day to complete the front row, with the Brit's McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri in third. The Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Hamilton were fourth- and fifth-fastest, but the latter will start 10th owing to that five-place penalty from last week.

Championship leader Oscar Piastri sneaked pole position ahead of team-mate Lando Norris after qualifying for the Dutch Grand Prix. Nine points ahead of his rival, the Australian was 0.012 seconds quicker on Saturday in a McLaren lockout of the front row as both drivers recorded their quickest laps on the first lap.

Max Verstappen is third in the Red Bull 0.263 behind Piastri, with increasingly impressive rookie Isack Hadjar fourth in the Racing Bulls. George Russel's Mercedes is fifth, followed by Ferrari pair Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.

"It's close. It's been close the whole weekend so easily could go one way or the other," said Norris. "A little bit disappointing to not be on pole but not the end of the world either."

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have finished top of the podium at the last four Grands Prix, with Norris picking up three wins including last time out in Hungary. He also won a year ago at Zandvoort. The Brit trails Australian Piastri by just nine points in the standings with 10 rounds to go and two races in Europe to go, where they've been dominant.

Max Verstappen hasn't had the year many would have expected, but at his home race the 27-year-old four-time world champion will be desperate to put on a good showing in the Red Bull.

Formula 1 has long been at the forefront of technology development - staying on top of the mountains of data the cars produce each race weekend isn’t just a useful tool, it’s the heart of the team.

That means a team’s technical partnerships are paramount to its success, and Aston Martin’s official AI compute platform partner, Arm, is no exception.

Arm claims to be the industry’s, ‘most power-efficient and highest-performing compute platform with unmatched scalability,’ and I spoke to John Kourentis, Arm’s Director of Automotive Go-To-Market in EMEAI, to find out more about their involvement.

Turning data into downforce

Data is everything in Formula One, with the margins of just a few seconds deciding the difference between first and last place.

Changing the front wing by a few millimetres can make or break a team’s race, and preparation is key to understanding how the car will perform on any given weekend.

"The trajectory for Aston Martin looks really strong, and so from that ambition, we can be ambitious in terms of where the technology path leads to as well. So, it really maps well to a partner that really wants to invest in driving performance through electronic investment and electronic innovations," Kourentis tells TechRadar Pro.

Crucial to the car development is the use of a new, state-of-the-art CoreWeave wind tunnel, and whilst drivers and strategists are away on race weekends pushing the car to its limits, engineers back in the team's Silverstone base are collecting as much aerodynamic information as they can in the limited wind tunnel time they are allowed;

“The detail and the technology that they deploy to understand the aerodynamics of the vehicle inside the wind tunnel is mind blowing” Kourentis explains; “they need the best sensor data capture technology that they can possibly get.”

That’s where Arm comes in. Aston Martin uses miniature sensors in the body of the car, and these sensors deliver real time information back to engineers, where Arm-powered compute is used to filter and process the signals in real-time.

In this wind tunnel, there's a scaled down model of the car, around 40% of the car’s actual size.

This model is packed with over a thousand sensors, and the engineers and aerodynamicists then rotate the car’s position and analyze the wind flow and aerodynamics of the car, adding and modifying car parts to see how these changes affect the air flow.

“All of that requires a really, really comprehensive suite of sensor data technology. That's where this aspect of the partnership is really focused, in making sure that we've got the best sensor data technology they can possibly get, getting the right fidelity of data that they can then actually use for aerodynamic optimizations in the future,” Kourentis says.

Optimized for success

Wind tunnels haven’t always been a feature of Formula One. As the sport has evolved, the margins have only gotten smaller, and aerodynamics in particular has taken centre stage as one of the sport’s most important elements, despite what Enzo Ferrari might have thought.

In the early days of the competition, aerodynamic testing was primarily done on-track, with engineers relying on race-weekends to collect data. This meant their data was at the mercy of track, weather, and driving conditions - and produced a desperate need for a more controlled environment.

Now, regulations and budget caps are the factors that influence data collection - it’s only in the last few months Aston Martin has had its own facility;

“Before having their own wind tunnel, they were sharing a wind tunnel with Mercedes,” Kourentis points out.

“And what that meant was that it was never really set up and always optimized for their use. I'm not sure there's much love shared between the various different F1 teams. So the first major benefit is they have their own wind tunnel facility, is that it's always set up and optimised exactly how they want it to be.”

Unfortunately, just because Aston Martin has its own wind tunnel, that doesn’t mean it can use the tech whenever it wants.

Formula 1’s governing body, the FIA, has a strict limit on the amount of time each team can spend using the tunnel, so as Kourentis says, “that means that every minute, every second of analysis that they do in the wind tunnel really, really does count.”

“That was part of the considerations in terms of some of the sensor technology and the Arm-based microcontrollers that are deployed in that model, is they need to get really, really high fidelity data in actually quite a short space of time because they don't have the luxury of being able to run it 24/7.”

Removing friction

On a more technical level, Arm is focused not just on delivering large volumes of high-quality data, but also on making this process as seamless as possible.

In a sport as precise as F1, any delay or barrier to information can be extremely costly, Kourentis notes;

“So a lot of the work we do is around removing friction from the software ecosystem to allow them to officially deploy their software on Arm architecture. And that's a lot of the work that we've been doing with the Aston Martin team.”

Arm is able to do this by keeping things consistent, allowing the team to utilize the best sensor technology and microcrontroller technology, and pair them with the most efficient software components, whether these are real-time operating systems, middleware, or other applications.

Arm works with software partners to make sure all designs are optimized for the underlying technology;

“One of the beauties of Arm and one of the reasons why we've had the success that we have is that we have managed to keep a consistent architecture for all of our CPU designs, our GPU designs and our ISP designs, which means it delivers a very, very consistent way to land software on those CPUs and families of CPUs,” Kourentis argues.

“To consistently do that over decades and decades and keep that entire ecosystem covering along with the latest and greatest architecture that we change is the real skill of Arm, to be honest with you.”

All change for 2026

Most Formula 1 fans will be looking to Aston Martin with anticipation, especially as the upcoming 2026 regulation changes come in, potentially bringing a shake-up of the grid.

The regulations represent a serious opportunity for the team, whose performance recently could perhaps be described as underwhelming, given previous glimpses of success.

“[New regulations will be] Engine heavy for sure. More of a hybrid focus, more electrical energy coming in in 2026. There are some considerable regulation changes around aero as well,” Kourentis confirms.

Aston Martin recently signed aerodynamicist and legend of the sport, Adrian Newey, an engineer who has designed a staggering 12 constructor's championship-winning cars, in a bid to boost its fortunes, and although the new regulations are said to bring a focus on engine power, aerodynamics will undoubtedly be of huge importance, Kourentis notes;

“I'm not an aerodynamic expert by any means, but understanding how the car performs with aerodynamic changes when it's cornering along different types of corners, in different circuits, different conditions, different speeds.”

“You could see that having a really, really strong sense of data platform in the wind tunnel to be able to capture those new aspects of how the regulations evolve is super important. And that's where most of the time [will be spent]. Adrian and the team are really focused on next year's car right now.”

Aston Martin fans will no doubt be eagerly awaiting the new season, where they’ll be benefiting not just from the wealth of Newey’s expertise, but also from the use of its very own wind tunnel, and the hoards of valuable data they can collect.

The F1 paddock is in Budapest this weekend, August 1-3, for the Hungarian Grand Prix, and once again, all eyes will be on the McLaren duo of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris who are locked in a tight battle at the top of the drivers’ standings.

The second half of the F1 season gets underway this weekend, July 25-27, with the Belgian Grand Prix and McLaren driver Lando Norris will be chasing a third straight victory after wins at Silverstone and the Red Bull Ring.

The British driver finished third in Saturday's sprint race at Spa and now trails teammate and title rival Oscar Piastri by 13 points in the driver standings after the Australian finished in second. However, he then went on to claim pole position for Sunday's headline race, pipping Piastri by just 0.085 seconds.

The McLaren duo are likely to be locked in a battle for victory but will have to be wary of four-time world champion Max Verstappen, who triumphed in Saturday's sprint race to deliver a winning start for Red Bull under new team principal Laurent Mekies.

Verstappen will start from fourth on the grid after a couple of late errors in qualifying allowed Ferrari's Charles Leclerc to take third place.

Like it or not, artificial intelligence is continuing its discreet invasion across top-end sports events, from the Olympics to Wimbledon and the Euros. So, it comes as no surprise that Formula 1 is engulfed with AI - but what might surprise some is the extent of its use. 

Fans are one of the biggest winners, with the launch of a new generative AI tool named StatBot. Generic titling aside, it’s a clever piece of kit replete with a mass amount of historical and real-time data that will, according to AWS, to "enhance operational efficiency of an F1 broadcast by enabling F1 to source stats and insights in moments." Alongside this sits the new F1 Insights, designed to help elevate the experience for existing fans and introduce new viewers to a world steeped in seventy-four years of history.

For those who see the chequered flag as simply the countdown to the next race, the AI is capable of delivering an avalanche of facts, figures, statistics, and insights. Driver performance. Car performance. Race strategy. Battle forecasts. There’s not much, if anything at all, AI isn’t tracking as a way to engage fans who may not even consider the mass amount of technology powering simple graphical analysis. 

The AI technology rests trackside, monitoring temperature and weather conditions, tracking car positions, and, arguably most important of all for the sport, capturing timings with a devastating accuracy. And if you look very, very carefully as they whip past at speeds of over 200mph, you might just be able to spot the unassuming sensors built into the cars, quietly collecting actionable data teams can use to refine race after race.

Root-cause analysis (RCA), whatever field it’s conducted in, is a time-consuming process. In a fast-moving sport where shaving milliseconds off a lap-time can mean the difference between silver and gold, the glacial speed of RCA can feel like a lifetime. Which had led, swiftly and inevitably, to the deployment of generative AI within the RCA process. In this capacity, AI is effectively a trouble-shooter. A problem eliminator. Assessing the situation, and allowing teams to act on the data, to deliver peak performance on every track.

A week after Lewis Hamilton won the British Grand Prix for Mercedes, those teams will be crunching the numbers, poring over the AI-powered datasets. If that wasn’t enough AI for a sport that was once simply ‘man vs. machine’, we’re even seeing its use in aiding the design of the Canadian Grand Prix trophy through text prompts alone. With Max having already sewn up the Driver's Championship, all eyes are turning to the mid-pack to see who will come out as best of the rest at the US Grand Prix.

Recent performances indicate that Mercedes should be able to fend off Ferrari, but with a mere 28 points between the two teams, a single slip up from any driver could turn the table on its head. 

What's more, Lewis Hamilton is just 30 points shy of Red Bull's Sergio Perez – even after suffering a DNF in Qatar. With Checo currently finding absolutely no form in the best car on the grid, a few tasty runs from the seven-time champion could see him dropped down to third.

McLaren, however, are the team to watch right now. With back-to-back second-and-third finishes, Zak Brown's outfit are beginning to look like real challengers to the throne – perhaps not in points, but certainly in pure race pace. 2024 could be shaping up to be a very different season if Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are given a truly competitive car to work with.

After qualifying in first for the Sprint and taking home the maximum possible points yesterday, Max Verstappen uncharacteristically sits on the third row at the US GP. It will be interesting to see if pole-sitter Leclerc can temper the Dutchman’s charge, or if Lewis Hamilton or Lando Norris can hold pace and keep the champion at bay. 

It's well worth noting that Circuit of the Americas has a number of tricky slow-speed sectors that we expect McLaren to suffer through, and at the US GP the sensible money will be on Mercedes or Ferrari to prop up the podium behind Verstappen. Stranger things have happened, though, so this is definitely a race to watch.

24 Hours of Le Mans: race preview

100 years since its inaugural outing, we're heading to the storied roads of Le Mans for the most iconic endurance race on the calendar. Teams will line up in three classes—LMGTE AM, LMP2, and the eye-wateringly fast Hypercar—and over 24 hours both man and machine will be pushed to the limit in one of motorsport's greatest spectacles. The action is now underway.

Introduced in 2021, the Hypercar class is home to some of the fastest machines on the planet. Odds are that Toyota's GR010 Hybrid will take the win this year, having placed first and second in every race of this year's FIA World Endurance Championship, and the last two trips around Le Mans. However, motorsport is anything but predictable, so prepare for this to be a hard-fought battle.

Chief among Toyota's challengers is Ferrari, who this season has returned to the top flight of endurance racing after a 50-year hiatus. And, while Toyota is pushing the Prancing Horse all the way, with a couple of hours to go Ferrari is clinging to the top spot.

You may also notice something distinctly large and American on the track. Each year, Le Mans allows a wildcard onto the track, known as the Garage 56 car, and this year it is, of all things, a Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 NASCAR built by Hendrick Motorsports. 

F1 champion Jenson Button, former Le Mans winner Mike Rockenfeller, and 7-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson will be at the wheel over the 24 hours, and preliminary testing shows the Yank muscle outpacing the daintier GTE AM machinery. Certainly something to look out for.

What is Formula E?

Formula E is its own distinct single-seater racing championship, exclusively for electric cars. Though it is governed by the FIA, which also runs the F1, F2 and F3 series, Formula E exists as a tier of its own.

In terms of sheer speed alone, Formula E cars are comparable to F3 cars. The new Gen3 cars making their Formula E debut this season are capable of reaching top speeds of 320kph/200mph, a little ahead of the 300kph/186mph that Formula 3 cars top out at. 

For further context, the top speed of an F2 car is around 335kph/208mph, and the top speed of an F1 car is around 360kph/223mph.

However, Formula E has never been about pure racing speed.

It's one of the most important testing grounds for the latest electric vehicle technologies in the world, driving research and development in the nascent sector, and shining a light on what the future could hold for mass-market EVs, particularly in terms of efficiency and charging.

Of course, it's also pretty compelling as pure theater, with the size, shape and mechanics of Formula E cars allowing for more close-quarters battles and easier overtaking than F1.

It’s safe to say that Formula 1 has never been more popular – and Netflix reportedly wants in on the action. 

Having boosted the overseas prestige of the sport with its mega-successful Drive to Survive series, the streaming service has (according to Business Insider) joined a bidding war with rival broadcasters NBCUniversal and ESPN for the rights to stream F1 races from 2023.

Disney-owned network ESPN has held the license to broadcast F1 coverage in the US since 2017, while Comcast-owned NBCUniversal did so for five years prior. The latter’s UK arm, Sky, currently holds the rights to broadcast F1 in the UK and Ireland until 2024. 

ESPN’s US-only deal expires at the end of 2022, and Business Insider reports that Formula 1 bosses are seeking to strike a new agreement worth in the region of $100 million. The former has supposedly submitted an opening bid of $70 million, while neither Netflix nor NBCUniversal has publicly disclosed the extent of their involvement in the negotiations.  

In a statement provided to Business Insider, ESPN executive John Suchenski said: “We are aggressively pursuing a renewal – we feel that we have a distribution package and event presentation that can’t be matched in the industry … It has been a mutually beneficial relationship.”

“Understandably,” he added, “[Formula 1 is] looking at other options.”

Stream if you want to go faster

According to Business Insider sources, Netflix is one of those options. The streaming giant has reportedly been engaged in conversations with Formula 1 bosses for months, and Netflix big-wigs haven’t been shy about their interest in securing exclusive rights to the sport. 

In a 2021 interview with Der Spiegel, company co-CEO Ted Sarandos said: “A few years ago, the rights to Formula 1 were sold. At that time, we were not among the bidders. Today, we would think about it.” 

Sarandos did admit, during Netflix’s Q1 2022 earnings call, that he and other executives would “have to see a path to growing a big revenue stream and a big profit stream” from sports coverage, though the company’s recent admission that it’s “exploring” live streaming content suggests a genuine willingness to embrace such a business model shake-up.
