As I immediately tell cast members Jessica Raine, Damien Molony, Antonia Thomas and Nicholas Pinnock, I don't always think it's a good idea to holiday with friends. Watching their unhinged new BBC iPlayer drama Two Weeks in August only confirms that further.

Across its eight episodes, a group of university friends reunites for a long-awaited summer holiday, but marriage, children, and mental health struggles have reshaped their relationships. In a nutshell, it's like if Love Island met ill-fated 2000s reality TV show Holiday Showdown.

Throughout the first few episodes, it's fun to work out exactly when you'd have booked a flight back to Stansted Airport when things start going awry. For me, it's when Jess (Thomas) casually asks each couple to put €200 into a pot for dinner funds as if it's chump change. But while annoying, the stakes are still low.

Where Two Weeks in August eventually takes its audience couldn't be guessed in a month of Sundays — and it's that much of a fever dream that you'll wonder if you've spent too long sitting in the sun yourself... and you're not even on holiday.

For those who are bored with formulaic and predictable crime dramas and thrillers, this is the perfect antidote, and I'd recommend it as one of this year's best hidden gems. And as for the awesome foursome behind it, things felt just as "outlandish" when the cameras were switched off.

'They really start turning on each other and forming alliances you didn't see coming'

"It's such a clever, slow burn," Thomas begins. "An event happening, but it's not immediately explosive, which I think is really true to Brits breaking social codes, but stoically keep going. Catherine's writing is so clever because she lifts the lid on that to try and understand where each person is operating from.

"But it gets more chaotic as it goes on... it spirals more."

By the time we get to episode 4 (no spoilers here), the entire tone of Two Weeks in August has changed. Circumstances have turned from a friend's getaway to something a lot more sinister, aligning with the Greek-themed party we see in the above trailer.

"People were wearing gimp masks, dressed up as bunnies... it got f**cking weird," Raine tells me. "There's a weird sense of sexual tension, pleasure, and desire."

"It's a real bottle episode, and it's bang in the middle of the series, and I think it's really perfectly placed," Molony continues. "Zoe [Raine] and Dan [Molony] are really distant and separated. It was a week of night shoots, and we all went a bit mad."

It's hardly a surprise to see why. From episodes 5-8, the tone gets set to change again, leading up to a finale that's a world away from where we began with an innocent dinner kitty.

"It escalates, and there's a sense of the paradise becoming hell," Raine adds. "You've come away for the sun and to relax, but suddenly it's a case of survival. They physically run out of things. With the group dynamics being as they are, these external pressures make it even more of a pressure cooker.

"People really start turning on each other and form alliances that you didn't see coming. As a viewer, you're like, 'this is really screwed up now.' I named every episode so I could keep them clear in my head, and the final episode I named 'It Burns.' Everything is white heat in every way."

Who else is feeling physically sick every time they tune into Half Man? That's testament to Richard Gadd's incredible character creation, but my word is Ruben absolutely vile.

As we're finding out, the show follows brothers Niall (Jamie Bell) and Ruben (Gadd) through 30 years of their lives, exploring the highs and lows of their turbulent relationship. Frankly, "lows" is putting things politely.

Already finished Beef season 2? Me too. But, fear not, if you're left wishing you hadn't binge-watched the iconic Netflix show's latest tumultuous season quickly, there are plenty more shows I'm happy to recommend watching next.

Beef season 2 picked up on an entirely new storyline to season 1, prompted by fresh 'beef' between country club couple Josh (Oscar Isaac) and Lindsay (Carey Mulligan), who have some... issues. Yes, I'm putting that lightly.

As an anthology series, it's possible you haven't even watched season 1 yet, starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, but you don't need to jump in there first.

There's no official word on a Beef season 3 yet, though the show's creator, Lee Sung Jin, told Esquire, "Never say never".

So, for now, if you're on the hunt for more shows that give off that high-stakes, stressful, and toxic (with a little fun) aura, I'd recommend these six absorbing shows to watch next.

The White Lotus

Like Beef season 2, The White Lotus also follows the twisted lives of rich (and not-so-rich) individuals. Only in the hit HBO Max show are they on vacation.

That certainly doesn’t stop the drama from following them, though, and it also doesn’t prevent an eerily dark vein from lacing its way through everything that unfolds.

The two are weirdly similar in tone, keeping you on the edge of your seat, unsettled and waiting to see what happens next. Which, in every episode, is pretty unpredictable. If you feel like bad things might unravel in The White Lotus, you’re probably right.

Similarly to Beef, it's an alternative take on an anthology series, as a different resort providing the luxurious backdrop for the show's three seasons and counting (here's everything we know so far about The White Lotus season 4).

The critical eyes among us will spot a couple of recurring characters, like the critically acclaimed Tanya McQuoid, played by Jennifer Coolidge, who they just couldn't leave behind.

Friends from College

Friends from College follows a group of friends who, you guessed it, have been acquainted since college. Now, they’re navigating life in their 40s, which comes with a torrent of big life decisions, complicated relationships and navigating waves of change.

Fortunately, there's also a wonderful balance of comedy thrown in. And it’s those dynamics that make it a great option if you loved Beef.

At first glance, Beef season 2 seems focused entirely on Josh and Lindsay’s relationship. A few episodes in, and it’s clearly far more complex than that, with the ensemble cast all exploring their own problems.

Friends from College certainly has more light comedy than Beef, but it still explores multiple personalities and will leave you thinking about how flawed they are for a while afterwards. It was cancelled after two seasons, but there’s still plenty of episodes to enjoy.

Barry

Bear with me here, because this choice is a little darker. Barry (Bill Hader) is an assassin. He's pretty depressed, he doesn't really like his life, and he has to kill people to earn money. But when Barry gets hired to head to Los Angeles on his latest hit job, he finds himself integrated into an acting class while on the job... and realizes that he loves it.

But while Barry wants to leave his life of crime behind and pursue his passion for the arts, it's simply, well, not that simple. And that's the premise behind this twisted, dark comedy that resembles Beef in its shadowy nature.

There's unexpected turns and an overwhelming urge to back someone that hasn't got the best morals. With Barry, you'll find you can't help yourself and that's what makes it a really excellent watch.

Dead to Me

In Dead To Me, Jen (Christina Applegate) is grieving the loss of her husband, murdered with no killer to be found. Attending a support group, she makes a new friend, Judy (Linda Cardellini), whose cheery disposition, if a little grating, is one that Jen can't resist.

There's a darkness to their newfound friendship that unravels majestically over three funny and devastating seasons.

Sounds a little like Beef? You're not wrong. Strange relationships and an acute look at human nature make Dead To Me a gripping watch, much like it did with Beef. There are humorous moments intertwined that make some of the stressful parts a little bit easier to stomach.

The Bear

On the surface, The Bear sounds like it has a fairly simple premise. Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) is a young chef trying to turn his family's struggling sandwich shop around in Chicago. But really, it is anything but.

In fact, it's a psychological drama that dives into the ins and outs of familial relationships, friendships, taking ownership, and navigating strong personalities. What we're left with, like Beef, is a pretty stressful ride.

The crew Carmy has working for him is a mixed bag, but our chef isn't exactly a shining example of humanity either.

But what they're passionate about is food, and through their shared love, they form their own kind of family. It's certainly not an elite country club like Beef season 2, but the grind never stops.

Killing Eve

Killing Eve follows Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh), who is assigned by the British intelligence agency she’s working for to catch an assassin named Villanelle (Jodie Comer). And while the case has been made perfectly clear to her — bring Villanelle in — the waters between the pair become increasingly murky.

Over four seasons, they establish a strange cat-and-mouse dynamic that's scintillating to watch and incredibly dark in nature. She's an assassin, after all. Created by Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the concept is incredibly unique, and it also demonstrates, like Beef, that a person’s psyche may not be as straightforward as you once thought.

The Motherland spinoff first arrived on the streamer in 2025 to critical and fan acclaim, following deluded Amanda's (Lucy Punch) from Chiswick to "So-Ha" (South Harlesden).

Though Amanda is followed by doting bestie Anne (Philippa Dunne) and sarcastic mother Felicity (Joanna Lumley), we were introduced to an entirely fresh array of faces — from disgruntled local chef Della (Siobhán McSweeney) to Amanda's long-suffering neighbor Mal (Samuel Anderson).

Throughout season 1, Mal frequently mentioned his ex Abs, who is now in a relationship with pal JJ (Ekow Quartey). The friends divide fatherly duties for Mal and Abs' son, but Abs herself is never seen... until now.

Amandaland season 2 episode 1 introduced us to no-nonsense Abs (Harriet Webb) in the very first scene, confronting Amanda for pretending to run 10k for her self-filmed social media series.

Things get even more delicious when Abs brands Amanda as shallow, with Amanda desperate to keep up appearances and prove she's anything but. "Oh yeah, I love anything handmade" is a winning response to Abs revealing that she once read The Handmaid's Tale.

There's no denying that Abs is a brilliant introduction. However, I can't help thinking there's another character that should have been carried over from previous episodes but has seemingly vanished... especially as their performance has been nominated for a BAFTA.

Jennifer Saunders should have returned for Amandaland season 2 after sensational Christmas special appearance

Cast your mind back to December 2025, and Amandaland released a stonker of a Christmas special. With Anne's flight home to Ireland grounded, Felicity talked into joining Amanda's plans, and Mal hoodwinked into driving at the last minute, the group heads off to the Cotswolds to have Christmas dinner with Felicity's sister Joan (Jennifer Saunders).

From the moment she opens the door in a blood-stained apron, looking a little like Mrs. Lovett from Sweeney Todd, Joan is as eccentric as they come. Her stately home clearly hasn't been touched or dusted in years, with Joan fond of the drink, glossing over her family's trauma and feeding disgusting-looking canapes to her dog.

When the group plays hide and seek, it's a recipe for disaster. Amanda becomes convinced she's Mick Jagger's love child thanks to old family photos she finds lying around, with Anne sinking her troubles with copious glasses of champagne.

The group sorts its issues out, with Anne spectacularly faceplanting into Amanda's homemade pavlova as the episode closes out. But it's Joan who is the true star of the show, toeing the line between emotionally vulnerable and blissfully ignorant like it's no big deal.

Of course, this was always going to be the case when you book Saunders for a comedy job. The Absolutely Fabulous reunion with Lumley aside, her effortlessly perfect assessment of how to play every scene is what makes her a comedy great. Frankly, it was a huge mistake not to bring her back for Amandaland season 2.

If Saunders wins the Best Comedy Actress BAFTA for her one-episode appearance as Joan, I'll simultaneously laugh my head off and say, "I told you so."

I'm coming up with so many potential TV show ideas for BBC iPlayer that I'm basically a freelance commissioner. With all episodes of Beyond Paradise season 4 now available to stream, let me walk you through my latest concoction.

If you were a fan of TV detective shows in the late 1980s, you might remember the golden age of big names sharing a crossover episode in the middle of a season's run (Columbo and Murder, She Wrote being my personal favorite). My pitch to the BBC is to bring this format back in the most obvious way possible.

Currently, the studio has three separate — but distinctly linked — crime dramas in Death in Paradise, Beyond Paradise, and Return to Paradise.

Each is racking up more and more seasons as the years pass, but despite Beyond Paradise being a direct spinoff of Death in Paradise (with lead Kris Marshall having starred in both), the three have never met.

It surely wouldn't be too hard for the three shows to cross over for a single episode, and it would undoubtedly be a fun novelty idea that also makes canonical sense.

I've already got Anna Samson from Return to Paradise on board with the idea, and now I've convinced the cast of Beyond Paradise season 4 that it needs to happen, too.

'We would be up for that, for sure — it sounds epic'

"We would be up for that, for sure," Zahra Ahmadi, who plays dogged detective Esther Williams, tells me. "That sounds epic. Why haven't they done that yet? Maybe we could do it in... I don't know what's the most luxurious location you can think of? Hawaii?

"Let's do it then. I would be so up for that, and I think everybody else would be as well."

Smells like a revival of Hawaii Five-0 to me, which isn't exactly a bad idea either. However, there is a small caveat for Marshall (DC Humphrey Goodman), who doesn't want Beyond Paradise to morph into something indistinguishable from Death in Paradise.

"What's always been important to us is that Beyond Paradise, whilst sharing the same DNA as Death in Paradise, retains its own unique thread and style," he explains.

"I feel that's always been super important to us, and that's no different now. Obviously, when you've done a show for four seasons, you know, everyone's a lot more comfortable in where they are and the way the show runs."

He continues, "But it has to stand alone. Otherwise, I don't think it would have made it to four seasons. And I don't think I would have wanted to do it."

Surely, for a single episode, we can make some concessions. I'm hearing an overarching yes, and I'm going to run with it, at least.

All that's left to do is get the Death in Paradise cast on board, then it's officially over to the BBC.

We're two episodes of Half Man down, and the brothers' introduction to university life has been as horrific as humanly possible.

We're following brothers Niall (Jamie Bell) and Ruben (Gadd) through 30 years of their lives, exploring the highs and lows of their turbulent relationship. Frankly, "lows" is putting things politely.

BBC iPlayer never leaves us high and dry when it comes to bingeable crime dramas. From April 26, the six-part "high-stakes" series The Cage joins the streamer's back catalog.

Starring Sheridan Smith, Michael Socha, Barry Sloane, and Geraldine James, the series follows Leanne (Smith) and Matty (Socha), who discover they are both robbing from the safe at the casino they work in.

As the BBC puts it, "their lives are set on a collision course; with each other, the local gangster they're stealing from, and the police."

It's got everything and the kitchen sink thrown at it, put it that way. But if things don't seem dramatic enough as The Cage begins, you don't have to wait too long until the trauma ramps up.

For its cast, it's episode 5 that you have to watch out for — and it's the part they're the most proud of.

'I've only got one way to work, and it's full-throttle'

"It's mine and Barry's scene in episode 5," James tells me when I ask her what she's proudest of in the series. The pair play Gary (Sloane), a local criminal, and his mother Nancy (James), who owns the casino where the drama takes place.

"I felt his spine chilling. It was amazing writing, and to be so in the moment was very revealing. It's a wonderful thing when you have to prepare. But when you get there, and somebody like Barry Sloane throws something back at you, it becomes totally different from what you thought it was going to be."

"As soon as I got [episode 5] on the page, I knew it was gonna be amazing," Sloane continues. But it's also terrifying. You've been gifted and want it to be really good; you want to be pleased with it. I've only got one way to work, which is full throttle. I think it's a good throttle."

Gary and Nancy's earlier years are explored in this part of the series, but that doesn't mean Leanne and Matty are in the clear — in fact, things are just getting worse.

But for Sheridan, The Cage was actually more "fun" than many of her previous roles.

"It's just so layered and fun, so and to get to work with Tony Schumacher and the cast was a no-brainer. I was really excited about this one, and it was a fun one after doing quite a lot of heavy stuff. And a bit more cool as well. I don't really get to play those parts very often."

Richard Gadd clearly has no interest in making gentle, easy-to-watch TV, following up his massive Netflix hit Baby Reindeer with Half Man – another drama seeking to get under its viewers' skin.

Gadd's much-anticipated follow-up to Baby Reindeer sees the writer and creator again cast in the lead role. But his character here couldn't be much more different to wannabe comedian Donny; this time he plays intimidating criminal Ruben, and shares top billing with Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) as his half-brother Niall.

As seen in the Half Man trailer (which you can watch below), the two have a love-hate relationship. Ruben is the volatile ying to Niall's more timid yang, with traumas, friction and conflict from their past coming between them.

The last few years have been absolutely mind-blowing for Richard Gadd. 2024 saw the release of the hit Netflix series Baby Reindeer, catapulting Gadd to global stardom virtually overnight.

What followed was record-breaking success and a tumultuous legal case involving the alleged inspiration for Martha (Jessica Gunning), Fiona Harvey. Two years later, he returns to TV with Half Man, his first fully fictional series launching on HBO Max and BBC iPlayer.

If you thought Baby Reindeer was uncomfortable to watch (especially episode 4), Half Man makes it look like child's play. The series follows brothers Niall (Jamie Bell) and Ruben (Gadd) through 30 years of their lives, exploring why their relationship is so toxic in Ruben's hands.

Where I've repeatedly binged Baby Reindeer since it first released — Gunning's performance and Gadd's script are just too captivating not to relive — I don't think I could ever stream Half Man again in my life. In short, it dredges up the worst of social masculinity in the most ruthlessly vulnerable of ways.

Despite being an exceptional series, I still feel it will linger in Baby Reindeer's shadow, largely because of how Gadd handles his first completely fictitious subject matter.

Half Man is a brutal evisceration of the worst kind of toxic masculinity

Before we get to the negatives, let's explore how Gadd has made vomit-churning evil into remarkable television. Half Man is a no-holds-barred look at the effects of excused toxic masculinity, with a lack of repercussions pivotal to understanding how reality is reflected in what we're seeing.

While meek Niall is our focal point across the six episodes, brutish Ruben is the one the story really sits with. We first meet him as a troubled teen in the 1980s, freshly out of juvenile detention and home to a mother who chalks his violent outbursts down to him being "unwell."

He quickly controls Niall with the most disturbing mental mind games I've ever seen portrayed on television, indoctrinating every part of his sexual, platonic, school and family life. This continues to get worse as Niall attends university, before their adult lives disperse and convene back together like crashing waves out at sea.

For a woman or vulnerable person, Ruben is a very real, living nightmare thrust into the faces of those who refuse to acknowledge the abominable behaviour of not all men, but some.

He's the one we fear while we're walking down the street, exercising at the gym or trying to enjoy a night out with our friends. It's almost no wonder why I don't want to see Half Man again — to an extent, many of us live it.

The more severe end of the violence scale is handled incredibly well, and I hope it will prompt some Adolescence-style dialogue and change. Gadd has such a shrewd knack for taking the dregs of global society and turning them into grotesquely real television, even if it's not always palatable.

It's Gadd's commitment to warts-and-all storytelling that will undoubtedly make Half Man one of the standout TV shows of 2026. No matter what he represents to us, no matter what we already think we know, we're metaphorically punched in the gut until we can no longer bear to look.

So why is Baby Reindeer the "better" show then?

Let me start by saying that Baby Reindeer and Half Man are two entirely different concepts, but it's the comparison that viewers are bound to make (and frankly, already are).

If we're really nitpicking, I think there's room for improvement in the structure of the story — and my best guess is that this is largely down to confidence. With Baby Reindeer, Gadd was using events from his actual life to craft something that he'd lived, beginning, middle, and end. Half Man has no bearing on reality, and thus is a storytelling shot in the dark.

This naturally leaves a greater room for error, which I think is displayed in what we're not seeing. The creative choice to time jump between episodes is, for the most part, incredibly effective, but it means that a lot of detail is unaccounted for. One of Niall's most significant romantic relationships is solely left to the imagination, as are many of the family unit's most significant milestones.

On top of this, Gadd is the weakest link in the show's otherwise strong ensemble performance. I realize I've spent the entire first half of this review relaying the importance of Ruben as a character, but we really absorb these effects of this through Niall.

Young Ruben (Stuart Campbell) is pumped up on machismo and Lynx, spouting absolute misogynistic and homophobic nonsense through a thick Scottish brogue. Gadd's version uses his normal voice, which is jarring even if it is an intentional plot point. Rather than feeling like two halves of a whole, our Rubens are connected by a string too faint to make out.

Campbell and Mitchell Robertson (who plays Young Niall) are our standout stars in Half Man. Their version of the fraught brotherhood hits the hardest, is the most emotionally explicit, and is the most exploitative in its manipulation. Emmys and BAFTAs all round, if I had my way.

My review comes with a word of warning: stream Half Man with caution. It probably ticks every trigger warning in existence, along with an alarmingly liberal use of the C word that US viewers will likely be annoyed by. But consumed correctly, Half Man could easily be 2026's TV moment of change.

Charlotte Regan... I knew I could trust you with absolutely anything. After months of waiting, all eight episodes of the director's TV debut — "unconventional" new crime drama Mint — are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

Starring Emma Laird, Ben Coyle-Larner, Sam Riley, Laura Fraser, and Lindsay Duncan, we follow Shannon (Laird), the daughter of her area’s dominant crime family, who is desperately searching for romance in the shadow of her father, Dylan (Riley).

Shannon falls hard for Arran (Carner), a member of a rival crime family who has newly arrived in town. Their love story presents an undeniable connection that changes both of their lives for good, but not everyone in their lives sees it the same way.

While Shannon and Arran are navigating their forbidden romance, elsewhere, things are imploding for Shannon’s family. Dylan decides to step down as the head of the family for mysterious reasons.

The narrative might feel formulaic, or at the very least like Romeo and Juliet meets Channel 4's Humans, but the eight-episode binge quickly proves that it's so, so much more.

Why you need to stream Mint on BBC iPlayer this week

I could attribute the success of Mint to its stellar cast and storytelling, and while they're each fantastic, they're not what propels the show into its own league.

Unsurprisingly, it's the creative vision of Regan that makes the show unlike any other crime drama you can binge for free on BBC iPlayer. If anything, Mint is more like a work of art than a series of television.

From short, sharp editing to frequently changing camera equipment and perspective, you could easily take a scene from Mint, display it in a gallery, and viewers would still get something from it.

Nowhere is it clearer than at the end of episode 1, intercutting Sharon in a moment of self-pleasure ecstasy with intruding police officers and dream-like delusions. The scene is over in about 20 seconds, with the instrumental for Charli XCX's latent banger Track 10 pumping in the distance.

In that short window of time, Regan gives us an entirely three-dimensional human experience. We're soothed, alert, hopeful, wary, despondent, and mesmerized all at once, and the regular use of changing image ratios, camcorders, and transitional footage only adds to that.

With Mint, we're being encouraged to think and engage in an entirely new way. We're not trying to solve a whodunnit or formulaic mystery, but rather asking questions about society and ourselves while watching.

The result is something fresh and beautifully probing. If BBC iPlayer continues to be this courageous in its commissioning, it's going to be an incredibly innovative and exciting streaming destination.

The first full trailer for the new BBC crime drama Mint has been released (which you can catch up with below), and I can honestly say I'm none the wiser about what's going on.

Don't get me wrong: it's a rare treat to be kept in the dark after watching a trailer. Created by Scrapper director Charlotte Regan, the "unconventional" eight-part crime drama is set to explore "soaring romance, crushing heartbreak and what love might feel like when everyone outside of your family is terrified of you."

Because there's nothing I need more than a new fear in the back of my head keeping me awake at night! However, cast Emma Laird, Ben Coyle-Larner, Sam Riley, Laura Fraser, and Lindsay Duncan look to be taking their touchy subject matter in an entirely new direction.

All episodes will be on BBC iPlayer from 6am BST on Monday, 20th April, with the first two airing on BBC One from 9pm that night. But what exactly are we letting ourselves in for?

BBC crime drama Mint's first trailer, is creepy, atmospheric and drowning in secrets

While the above trailer doesn't exactly give anything away, here's everything we know about Mint so far.

We start with Shannon (Laird), the daughter of her area’s dominant crime family, who is desperately searching for romance in the shadow of her father, Dylan (Riley).

Basically, it's like Romeo and Juliet meets Channel 4's Humans, if the trailer clip aesthetic is anything to go by. There are bound to be layers upon layers in Regan's worldbuilding, so defining Mint simply as a crime drama is most likely underselling things.

I'm all for bringing some avant-garde whimsy back to mainstream television, so if you're looking for a thriller that's more experimental art than formulaic, I think you've found it.

I have a working theory that whenever an actor signs up for a crime drama (as of last year) on BBC iPlayer, they automatically get offered a spot on The Celebrity Traitors.

Think of the fact that every series of Strictly Come Dancing has one contestant from EastEnders and Gladiators alike — almost like TV channel conscription. Now that The Traitors has been renewed until 2030, maybe it will even be added to people's contracts.

If I dare to dream even further, there will be crossover episodes. If a Traitors contestant goes down well enough with fans, their shiny new media career takes off. So what's to say an acting role or two won't come their way?

One show I think they'd be right at home in is Beyond Paradise, and luckily for me, even the cast agrees.

'Nobody's asked us to be on, but I'm absolutely obsessed with it'

"They haven't asked us to do it, but have a word with them... I'd love to," star Zahra Ahmadi tells me.

"I'm absolutely obsessed with The Traitors. When we got nominated for best new drama at the National Television Awards after the first season of Traitors had not long been on, we were walking down the red carpet, got to the end, and saw Wilf. I seem to get really star-struck by reality stars more than anyone else, and freaked out to our producer.

"If I could have anyone on as a guest star, maybe Stephen and Rachel. Or Harriet. She'd be amazing. Oh God, I'd be terrified of her!"

Not only has Ahmadi chosen amazingly well, but she'd be absolutely brilliant on the hit reality show. Her Beyond Paradise character Esther doesn't suffer fools and is incredibly diligent in her police work, with Ahmadi's naturally warm personality making for a killer pairing.

We saw how well this worked when the first series of Celebrity Traitors cast Line of Duty's Mark Bonnar, who became so irate at the roundtables that he routinely swore and punched the ground.

Mark my words: a crime drama star will be on season 2... it's just a question of who. Fingers crossed, Beyond Paradise and Traitors will get their crossover at some point soon.

Mothers across the world are jumping up and down (well, at least mine is) as Beyond Paradise season 4 finally returns to BBC iPlayer on March 27. Episodes are set to drop week by week at 8pm GMT, and frankly, I can't wait.

There are more grisly cases to solve, more incredible guest stars, and more drinking down a Devonshire pub that anyone's liver should be able to handle. At the center of it all are DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) and wife Martha (Sally Bretton), who have had a tumultuous time, to say the least.

Before finally getting wed in season 3, we saw the pair struggle with being able to foster a child, eventually moving in with Martha's mother Anne (Barbara Flynn) as new episodes kick off. Three's most definitely a crowd, by the looks.

I was hoping that the official start of their marriage would calm their lives down a bit, and according to Marshall and Bretton, that's definitely the case in Beyond Paradise season 4. However, that doesn't mean their drama has completely vanished.

'It's nice to plant themselves on solid ground after the time they've had'

"The whole boat episode has has brought some things into sharp focus," Bretton begins. "Having been staying in their mum's cottage is not ideal and too small for Humphrey. On a boat that's very romantic, but less romantic for Martha's day-to-day living.

"Now they're married, I think it's made her feel like it would be nice to plant themselves on some solid ground after the time they had and the things that they've weathered. Once they have created that, where are they and what will they bring into it? I think the main goal has been finding something solid for both to have for a while and focus on each other and less out at sea."

Even just at a cursory glance, that's a good idea. Beyond Paradise season 4 episode 1 opens with a boat skit that could rival Fawlty Towers — and if I was already desperate to get back onto dry land, it would be my last straw.

"I agree with that," Marshall continues. "They've obviously been on this fostering journey, they've had a lot of variables that they can't necessarily control, and that's fine, they've enjoyed that. It's all brought them great joy, but also a little bit of sadness.

"After the wedding and everything that happens to them in the first episode, things are thrust into sharp focus. They just want to reset themselves. It's all been a bit of a whirlwind, beautiful, chaotic, and typical of Humphrey and Martha. But now they want a bit of grounding."

One thing is for sure: Humphrey and Martha are an unbreakable force. If their love can weather all of these storms, then they're basically a modern-day fairytale romance... though something tells me things won't stay calm forever.

Now that the first teaser trailer for the upcoming HBO Max Harry Potter TV series is out in the world, everyone is talking about Paapa Essiedu taking on the role of Dark Arts professor, Severus Snape.

However, we're looking in the completely wrong direction. Sure, there were always going to be many contradicting opinions about the adaptation of the Harry Potter movies from the jump, but let's wait until it releases this Christmas before we make any judgments.

In the meantime, Essiedu has easily given the best performance of his career so far in new BBC drama, Babies. He plays Stephen, one half of a young couple who experience multiple miscarriages over the course of their relationship.

It's one of the most gut-wrenching and honest portrayals of baby loss that I've ever seen, charting every possible emotion any person is capable of handling throughout. The grief is unimaginable, but somehow, there is always light and love at the end of the tunnel.

In a nutshell, it's a world away from Snape and the wonderful wizarding world of Harry Potter — and it's a must-watch to fully understand just what Essiedu can do.

'We're watching people try and fail to communicate effectively with the people they love'

"A lot of what we're experiencing is watching people trying and failing to communicate effectively with people that they love and need," Essiedu tells me about the new series.

"It's hard not to be confronted by the moments that you have in your own life at the same time. In your romantic life, in your professional life, with your friends... it's like, when can you dare to be brave enough to be real and authentic and say what you actually feel?

He continues, "When do you ever do that and it doesn't make you feel better, or closer, or doesn't make relationships more intimate? That's definitely something that became very present for me when I was making the show."

As Essiedu suggests, it's a story that often feels too close to home, even if Babies doesn't directly represent your lived experience. Watching it is as intimate as a play, often feeling as though you're intruding on Stephen and his girlfriend Lisa's (Siobhán Cullen) most private moments.

"I know people say this all the time, but genuinely so excited to go to work every day," Cullen adds. "Of course, there were harder days for different reasons. Sometimes we're just shooting a very long, dialogue-heavy scene. Or this day we're shooting outdoors, and we're at the mercy of Watford High Street."

Shooting some of the medical stuff was more physically and emotionally challenging, so I suppose they're the ones that you look out for on the call sheet. But they were all different flavors of gorgeous. It was kind of like being back at school. I was just learning so much every day from everyone on set; I really got my bang for my buck. It was invaluable as an actor."

Do me the favor of watching all six episodes of Babies and tell me you don't feel profoundly changed by streaming it — and maybe, just maybe, it will change your opinion of Harry Potter for the better, too.

The steamy whodunit stars Dove Cameron and Avan Jogia as Ciara and Oliver, who get embroiled in a murder mystery after a whirlwind romance. All eight episodes of 56 Days are already out on Prime Video, so I'd recommend binge watching this Amazon TV Original ASAP so nobody spoils its ending before you reach it. – TP

Rental Family (Hulu/Disney+)

The Brendan Fraser renaissance is a movement I've been behind for a long time now. Indeed, his return to the spotlight after various personal issues is one I've welcomed, especially for an actor as talented and a person as humble as he is.

You can bet, then, that the arrival of his latest film – a dramady called Rental Family – on Hulu and Disney+ means my weekend viewing is sorted. In it, Fraser plays Philip, a struggling actor who lives in Japan and takes up a second job at a rental family service. Putting his skills to use, he plays various roles in the lives of strangers dealing with their own problems.

Another unmissable addition to Fraser's body of work, Rental Family will have you laughing one minute and crying the next. A deeply compassionate, sweet-natured, and warm movie that deserves more eyes on it. – TP

The Last Thing He Told Me season 2 (Apple TV)

Laura Dave only published the sequel to hit novel The Last Thing He Told Me in January, so it's a surprise to see Apple TV has already released the first episode of its second season.

Initially, Dave hadn’t planned a sequel, but the strong reaction to the story about Hannah, a wife searching for the truth behind her husband Owen’s disappearance, made another chapter inevitable. For Jennifer Garner, who plays Hannah, though, a new season was a no-brainer. "Did you not realize you were writing one of the greatest cliff-hangers of all time?" she asked Dave at a preview of Apple TV's 2026 slate. We'll see if the pay-off is worth it in the Apple TV Original's next chapter. – AS

Murder in Glitterball City (HBO Max)

If you loved Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato’s 1998 cult classic Party Monster: The Shockumentary, which delved into New York’s infamous 'Club Kids' scene, you won’t want to miss their new HBO Max true crime documentary Murder in Glitterball City.

The story delves into the queer subculture of Louisville, Kentucky, following the 2010 murder of Jamie Carrol, a hairdresser and drag performer known as Ronicka Reed, whose body was found buried in the basement of a Victorian mansion.

At the centre of the case are lovers Joey Banis and Jeffrey Mundt, who accuse the other in what became known as the "He-said-he-said" trial. Taking us back to the chilling love triangle and its deadly outcome, this documentary will send shivers down your spine. – AS

Fed up of being nervous about, well, everything, Spongebob decides to put on his big guy pants and ride Bikini Bottom's biggest rollercoaster. But, when he bottles it, he ends up unknowingly helping The Flying Dutchman to try and lift his lifetime curse.

If you were under the age of 10 in the 2000s and thought the original SpongeBob movie was the bee's knees, this film is for you. The animation style might have changed, but the heart certainly hasn't. – Jasmine Valentine, entertainment reporter

The 2026 BAFTAs (BBC/E!/HBO Max)

Can you believe that Paddington Bear himself is set to be a presenter at this year's BAFTA Film Awards? It's honestly worth tuning in for that alone.

The BAFTAs are the last big awards stop before this year's Oscars ceremony, and it's most likely to contradict the Hollywood winners. I'd safely put money on Jessie Buckley winning Best Actress for Hamnet and Timothée Chalamet winning Best Actor for Marty Supreme, but be prepared for some potential surprises. – JV

Marian Keyes book girlies, rejoice — new drama The Walsh Sisters arrives on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on February 21.

Instead of faithfully adapting one of the Irish author's hit novels, the new TV show is a broader cross-section of multiple novels. We meet sisters Anna (Louisa Harland), Rachel (Caroline Menton), Maggie (Stefanie Preissner), Claire (Danielle Galligan), and Helen (Máiréad Tyers) as they navigate the peaks and troughs of their 20s and 30s.

As the BBC itself puts it, this is a sisterhood full of in-jokes, hand-me-down resentments, and more than a few old wounds. But their DNA, history, and shared love of power ballads keep the Walsh sisters together in the face of heartbreak, grief, addiction, and parenthood.

It's a pleasant shift in tone from recent BBC success stories such as Lynley and Return to Paradise. I'm a sucker for any family-led tales from any British or Irish perspective, and you can bet my Marian Keyes-obsessed mother is already parked on the sofa in anticipation.

I spoke to Harland, Preissner, Menton, and Galligan about the "emotional journey" we're set to go through while streaming The Walsh Sisters... and it sounds like we might need more than one box of tissues.

"It was a heavy load for actors and the crew"

"There was a comfort and release in those emotional, high-stakes scenes... it's a very Irish way of telling a story, and it's very Marian Keyes," Preissner tells me, who was also a writer on the show.

"Life is never genre pure. It's never just a comedy or drama, and all of the girls are never just a monolith of an emotion. So within the scenes, I would try to have a release valve. So I also believe that how you get an audience to engage is to get them really close by laughing, and then you stab them in the heart with something sad."

Frankly, The Walsh Sisters effect is just as brutal as it sounds. It feels even more brutal than visualizing it through Keyes' words because you're seeing comedy-trauma play out in front of your eyes, and you may well need a breather or two while you binge.

"I think Louise had the hardest role, for sure," she adds as the others nod. "Within that, and there were some scenes that were just pure grief, particularly whenever she was on her own. There are so many actors that I've met that would not have been able to do what she did.

"In the scenes where she was emotional, our script editor, who's sitting off camera, is crying. Everybody was weeping because she brought it full-on. It's a heavy load for actors and crew."

Don't let the emotions put you off, though – in true Irish storytelling style, The Walsh Sisters is full of heart and laughs too. To me, this feels like a group of women who are going to stay bonded forever.

"People have gone off, and they're filming different things, but we still have the WhatsApp group. It's certainly quieter, but we're still there, like, cheering each other on," Galligan adds.

"The nature of our jobs...can be so transient, sometimes you get so tight-knit for such a strong or such a specific period of time," Harland agrees. "But then, like, there's always a sense of knowing that if I needed anything, or I was in trouble, I could just pick up the phone to any of them at any time, and there will be no questions asked. I think that's a really beautiful feeling that I've taken away from this."

SOBBING. Menton sums it up best: "I do think that we have our family. We'll always have the Walsh sisters."

All the feelings and all the tears, then. So what should we stream after our binge to decompress? The awesome foursome almost immediately agree on The Traitors (Irish or British, so feel free to take your pick).

"That was what got me through the edit," Preissnet admits. "I loved being in both of those bubbles."

This is enough information alone to have me seated, but the stacked cast – led by Emma Laird, Ben Coyle-Larner, Sam Riley, Laura Fraser, Lewis Gribben and Lindsay Duncan – means Mint is on track to be an absolute smash.

While we still have to wait to binge it (an official release date has yet to be confirmed), the BBC has released a first-look. Combine the playful mystery of it with the gritty, vulnerable realism Regan always delivers, and Mint easily becomes one of my most-anticipated TV shows of 2026.
