With 1,600 shaders, 80 texture units and 32 ROPs, it was a pretty safe bet that AMD's new uberchip would enter the performance tables in the number one spot.

In practice, it doesn't disappoint. The fact that it manages it whilst also delivering the smallest power consumption footprint is even more impressive.

The only slight disappointment is that the 5870 doesn't quite deliver on AMD's promises of minimal performance reduction when running 8x anti-aliasing.

Oh, and if you're wondering why the 4890 does so well, note that our test board is a factory overclocked Sapphire Toxic model running 960MHz core clockspeed.

Technology and cars. Increasingly the twain shall meet. Which is handy, because Jeremy (Twitter) is addicted to both. Long-time tech journalist, former editor of iCar magazine and incumbent car guru for T3 magazine, Jeremy reckons in-car technology is about to go thermonuclear. No, not exploding cars. That would be silly. And dangerous. But rather an explosive period of unprecedented innovation. Enjoy the ride.
