If you’re like me then tiles such as today’s — mostly made up of two words – make you feel confused and discombobulated.

However, once the brain has calmed these types of games tend to be far easier than the appear at first sight.

That said there were several tiles here that were new to me — LIQUID SUNSHINE seems like an odd way to describe a rainy day, although, my goodness there are plenty of them (I like mizzle, which is misty drizzle) and I thought CARAPACE was an Ecuadorian cyclist, but I now know it’s the word for a tortoise shell.

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

Well this was annoying. As I was submitting AFRICAN CURRENCIES I couldn’t help but think to myself “I bet this bit of knowledge is worth a purple”, but no.

Sadly, knowing that KWANZA is used in Angola, the RAND in South Africa, LEONE in Sierra Leone, and NAIRA in Nigeria was only worth a blue. So where was the purple?

The answer came in the form of, in my view, the far easier thread of STRIP____.

I ended without any mistakes on what felt like a tricky game, so I’m not that annoyed really.

Yesterday, “baseball” was one of the tiles and today it appeared to be one of the categories. However, I was wary of a trap so decided to steer clear of HOME RUN, WALK and STRIKEOUT until later in the game — not least because I couldn’t see a fourth obvious baseball term.

Instead, I decided to collect WALK, RAMBLE, JOG and CANTER in a group I was thinking signified slow movement. Alas, I was very wrong. Finally, I saw the correct group for RAMBLE and was on my way.

Feeling brave, I added SINGLE to my baseball list and landed the OUTCOMES FOR A BATTER group and then successfully saw the four tiles connected to BRING TO MIND, AS A MEMORY. Close to a STRIKEOUT, but far from a HOME RUN.

I made two, what I will call, good mistakes today. 'Good', as in I was on the right track and the errors helped me hone in on the correct quartet.

The first was picking JANGLE instead of EXCITED. I correctly thought the group was about anxiety and picked JANGLE because that's how I feel when I’m nervous or on edge.

Then, after successfully spotting PARTS OF AN AIRPORT, I decided to collect the math words hidden in some tiles and picked ORANGE, because of range, over DEPLANE. Meanwhile, how I completely overlooked SPHERICAL THINGS is uncertain.

WHITE STRIPES, STROKES, and HIVES are all alt-rock bands from the same era, but being unable to find a fourth, I added HOLE — whose main period of activity was a decade earlier. I really should have known this was a trap, but I just couldn’t help myself.

Pulling myself together I saw that HIVES instead belonged to a group made up of SYMPTOMS OF AN ALLERGIC REACTION, but it took getting HOOVES, MANE and TAIL before I saw where WHITE STRIPES fitted into a world beyond music.

With eight tiles left, PINS caused me some dilemma as it belonged both in the world of social media (Pinterest, to be precise) and golf. Fortunately, I chose to link it with VINES, TWEETS, and SNAPS instead of ON A GOLF SCORECARD.

This happens very rarely to me, but I saw the hardest group immediately today, with PROMPTER and VISION helping me connect GRAM and KINESIS.

It felt like an easy purple, but maybe telegram caught a few people out seeing as they are now a fairly pointless form of communication.

Regardless, I was rewarded with my 50th Purple First badge — it has taken me a while to reach this milestone, with my haphazard play style instead being to just connect the first group I see, rather than looking for the most likely to be a purple. I can’t imagine being that tactical with Connections.

In truth, this felt like a game where any of the groups could have been yellow on any other day, although all of the groups did contain things that have largely disappeared.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

I hope I wasn’t the only person to struggle over this game. I had a stinker.

My first mistake was to connect the four mushroom varieties of OYSTER, BUTTON, PORTOBELLO, and TRUMPET. It is annoying when you find a genuine foursome but it is not part of the game.

However, my next mistake was of my own doing: I connected BUBBLE TEA, SAKES, ALEXA and OYSTER, thinking there was some vague Asian connection.

After two very wrong attempts I studied the tiles more closely and got the ANNOUNCE foursome and even the old-fashioned drinks that made up the purple group.

My mistake came by including FUSE instead of SYNC in the group that became DIGITAL COUPLING VERBS. Although I’d argue that FUSE could be classed as a coupling verb, I attempted this grouping before seeing the far more appropriate CIRCUIT COMPONENTS.

It didn't matter, though, because I managed to score a purple first — in large part this was due to seeing POKER and automatically singing Lady Gaga’s debut chart hit Pokerface.

From there, GAME and STRAIGHT automatically followed, as well as the punchline to the only joke I can ever remember: a depressed horse walks into a bar and the barman asks him “why the long face”?

Meanwhile, THINGS TOILETS DO eluded me.

I made my mistake after successfully threading ATTITUDE, MIND, OPINION and VIEW, although I was thinking about components of a debate rather than a BELIEF.

My error was, of course, confusion over basketball terminology. DOUBLE DRIBBLE and GOALTEND I knew, but instead of TRAVEL I selected SCORE. Which, on reflection, makes no sense.

Meanwhile my confidence over WORDS AFTER “POP” was fragile, but I successfully guessed FLY instead of SCORE. Before googling I thought it was an alternative to a zip fly. I now know it’s a baseball term.

Even though I didn't get a purple first I was delighted that I managed to get ENDING IN PARTS OF A CAR at all, as I know nothing about automobiles whatsoever.

This particular group needed translating fromAmerican English to UK English for me, because here a trunk is a boot and a spoiler is a bumper.

GRAND FINALE was simple, although EPILOGUE feels the odd one out of the quartet as it’s possible to have an ending to a career and then have an EPILOGUE years later — a movie star returning as a director, for example, or a boxer ill-advisedly coming out of retirement to punch a YouTuber.

Looking at today’s game after I completed it, I don’t understand why I failed to see SHADES OF BLACK as it is the only group that I could have actually got right.

The other three groups were the result of muddled game play and lucky guesses — particularly STARTING WITH TINY MARKS, which I didn’t get because I spotted dot, period, point and spot, but because all the tiles were made up of two words.

Before that, though, I made the mistake of putting together what I thought were four different types of printer. Hopefully I wasn't the only player to fall into that trap, but in truth it doesn't take much to catch me.

Despite not making any mistakes I am classifying this game as tricky, because I came close to an error in collecting four unrelated sporting things.

THINGS WITH LACES also favors anyone familiar with FOOTBALL, as my mind went to soccer balls — which haven’t had laces since the 1960s.

I also got lucky in spotting the purple group after thinking all of the things that WIGGLE could be connected to and saying “wiggle room” to myself. I hate the idea of being in tight, crowded spots, so wiggle room is always on my mind.

With PICNIC, LAUNDRY and GROCERY locked in I made the mistake of selecting BARGAIN instead of EASTER.

There was logic to my error. My parents used to run a grocery store and they would put items that were close to their sell-by date or damaged in a basket that became known as the BARGAIN basket. I thought it was a universal thing, but maybe not.

The next two groups came pretty easily, especially the four tiles that made up the yellow CONTRACT group, as they are words that seem to be constantly in the news in regards to negotiations surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Without a clue with the final eight tiles I made three mistakes before finally getting the FICTIONAL CATS foursome.

I was mystified as I played this game but I now know that buss — as featured at the start of BUSSIN — is a very old word for kiss that fell out of favor in the 1600s. Due for a comeback, then.

Meanwhile, I had no idea what the connection for BUCKET, DRAWER, MUG and UMBRELLA was, beyond vaguely thinking you could carry water in all of them (not that you see many people carrying water in a drawer).

Not my finest game.

For anyone based outside of the US, like me in the UK, this game had an added layer of difficulty thanks to Connections’ fondness for candy brands and state capitals.

By now, of course, I should be fully aware of the many varieties of candies — some of which admittedly have travelled beyond the US to cause dental issues around the world — but compressed dextrose delight SPREE is not one I have heard of.

Somehow, though, I floundered my way through with just two mistakes.

Congratulations if you spotted the DOUBLE LETTERS APPEARING IN THAT LETTER'S ALPHABETICAL POSITION.

I did momentarily think the double-A in AARDVARK was significant, but the other groups came together so easily I put it to one side.

A sign of an easy, universally gettable game is not just how quickly you complete the four groups, but also how common it is that you complete it in difficulty order.

That was the case for me today, although with the exception of the purple any of the groups would qualify as a yellow on other day. My brain is struggling to think of anything other than England vs Norway in the World Cup, so I’m grateful for the time off.

There were a number of fashion links among today's tiles: A LA MODE, of course, STRIKE A POSE — which features in Madonna’s Vogue — BALL GOWN, and DEPECHE MODE, which was the name of a French fashion magazine.

What caught me out, however, was the SMARTPHONE SETTINGS, as I originally included SAFE MODE instead of DO NOT DISTURB.

Today’s game also featured my two favorite bands — PET SHOP BOYS and NEW ORDER, both of whom joined forces in the 1990s with Electronic and who still tour together occasionally.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

A charmed game without mistakes.

As a former music journalist I was duty bound to connect the four MUSIC PUBLICATIONS in BILLBOARD, ROLLING STONE, SPIN and PITCHFORK, and was rewarded with a green.

Fortunately, I also resisted the temptation of linking VIRGIN and PRAYER in a cobbled together Madonna grouping, deciding instead that PRAYER and SHAG must have something to do with carpeting.

With eight tiles left I took a risk collecting the four tiles I thought sounded vaguely like sporty cars and got lucky.

I am sure I was not the only one making a mistake by connecting THREAD, SHAVE, WAX, and PLUCK, thinking they were all ways to eliminate body hair. Anyone who has ever been to a Turkish barber will know that there’s another way, too!

Alas, it turned out to be a dastardly red herring.

After my error I was able to get the other groups easily enough, although I did hesitate over TAP in the GUITAR-PLAYING TECHNIQUES group.

The game of Clue has come up a couple of times in Connections — previously we had weapons and characters — and although I’ve never played it I was familiar with Colonel Mustard and somehow knew that a candlestick could be used as murder weapon.

This time, though, I got ROOMS IN CLUE just because they were also, erm rooms.

My mistake came in trying to make sense of the final eight tiles, first making an utterly random quartet and then taking some time and spotting Bert, Ernie, Count and Elmo.

I would use cultural differences as the reason why I didn’t see SCIENCE FAIR MODEL SUBJECTS, but it is such a sitcom trope that I have no real excuse for being blind to the concept of a cardboard VOLCANO exploding with vinegar and red food coloring.

Much easier was spotting STARTING WITH DATING APPS, made easier by seeing tiles for BUMBLEBEE and TINDERBOX beside each other.

My mistake came with the blue group — I wasn’t thinking about catching a roadrunner, but I did I think that EARTHQUAKE PILLS, IRON BIRD SEED and ROCKET SKATES did all sound like crazy inventions, so I added THUNDERBOLT thinking it might be some kind of tool.

After getting one away, I realized ACME PRODUCTS was the link.

I used to work for American Express at their UK headquarters back in the day doing what is no doubt a fully automated task of authorising payments. It was the easiest and most boring job I’ve ever done, but the downside was I was on the night shift — which led to all manner of downsides, not least a poor diet.

That said, this is not why I got AMEX CARD TYPES; that would be a guess. With eight tiles left, it wasn't too much of a stretch.

GRANOLA INGREDIENTS should have been my first foursome, seeing as that’s my regular breakfast, but instead the easy win of CARD, CASH, CHECK and WIRE was hard to resist.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

I came into this game expecting Fourth of July themes — fireworks, Tom Cruise, stars and stripes — and saw none whatsoever.

I did, though, immediately see VILLANELLE, which I know as the character from Killing Eve, but also as a very strictly structured poetic format. Seeing no other fictional assassins I confidently added EPIC, ODE and BALLAD and felt very intellectual about myself until being rewarded with a lowly green. 

With eight tiles left I saw the link with the word SWEET __ — a good job, as the quartet of tropical drinks is something I had no knowledge of.

I don’t have many POSITIVE FEELINGS about today’s game.

You know how sometimes you don’t include a tile in a group because it feels too “on the nose”? I had this today with HAPPINESS, so realizing the group was all about happiness, instead I picked COOL BEANS, GROOVY and FAR OUT before seeing that these were the kind of things dudes would say to each other in the 1970s.

RETRO EXPRESSIONS OF APPROVAL out of the way  I finally claimed the elusive yellow group and then BAD THINGS TO GIVE SOMEONE.

It’s not often I get a purple first, so I’m thrilled that I took a risk on DIAMOND RING as I thought that the group was strictly about athletics, rather than generally STARTING WITH SPORTS VENUES.

After this triumph I took another risk – COPYCAT, MIME, and MOCKINGBIRD all seemed to be about copying, but with no other obvious tile I guessed that T-1000 was the name of a photocopying machine.

T-1000 is, of course, not a photocopier but the terrifying killing machine in Terminator 2, played by the great Robert Patrick.

My mistake came by including MOSCOW instead of LIMERICK in the list of THINGS NAMED AFTER PLACE.

At the time, I was thinking the Russian capital should be in the list because of the MOSCOW Mule but after getting one away I realized that there were three other PLACES IN COCKTAIL NAMES.

This was all after getting the four movie titles — I knew all four were classics but didn’t think they were all BEST PICTURE WINNERS/NOMINEES. From the list I thought FARGO was a winner but it lost out to The English Patient in 1997.

  • PURPLE: WHAT "DRAFT" MIGHT REFER TO BREEZE, ON TAP, RECRUIT, SKETCH
  • My rating: Hard
  • My score: 2 mistakes

CAN, BOX, BOTTLE and ON TAP all sounded like wine delivery methods to me, while HEDGE, BOX, BOTTLE and FENCE were surely describing someone who wouldn’t commit to an opinion.

Alas, in both cases I was very wrong, but fortunately before the situation go too dire I was able to spot four ways in which one could PARTICIPATE IN SOME WINTER OLYMPICS and the quartet of DIVIDING STRUCTURES.

With just eight tiles left I finally managed to see the COMMON RECYCLABLES while WHAT "DRAFT" MIGHT REFER TO passed me by like a a BREEZE. Fine work if you saw the purple first.

I wasted some time looking at parts of words and convinced myself that there must be some canine-themed collection thanks to WOOFER and EMBARK, but ENDING IN PARTS OF A TREE passed me by.

My mistake was a stupid one. I knew that we were threading OLD TIMEY TROUBLEMAKERS, but I included GROOT instead of ROGUE based on some half-remembered slang rather than the Marvel character.

Meanwhile, did anyone else experience deja vu from the green group CONSUME WITH GUSTO? I’m sure we have had this quartet before.

I very nearly collected the games GO, CHESS and DARTS together, but the absence of a fourth stopped me. 

I was a long way from seeing the connection THEY HAVE BOARDS between CHESS and DARTS; congratulations if you linked those with CORPORATION and SURFER.

When it came down to eight tiles left I went with the obvious — although I did think the thread between them was words supermarkets use when they want to charge you more for something slightly better.

Another appearance for FOXTROT after it featured in a group of DANCE STYLES a few days ago. This time it was really tricky, as I spotted the link with DECANTER but the four words ending in “walk” made it difficult to commit to my hunch that we were looking for a group about different types of horse movement.

Scared of making multiple mistakes I went down a different route and connected the four STRIPED THINGS then COMPONENTS OF A FASHION SHOW.

With just eight tiles left I still had two tiles ending in "walk" to guess between and managed to pick the wrong one.

A really sneaky game, this one and one that was especially difficult for those of us outside the US, like myself in the UK, who have different MONOPOLY SQUARES..

I was proud of myself on two counts today. Firstly, in managing to get a purple first and secondly, in managing to resist submitting the four CRUNCHY SNACK ITEMs ahead of the more risky collection of COLORS PLUS A LETTER.

Although I was confident of a connection between REDO and PINKY, BRONZER and TANG felt like a risk — but the gamble paid off.

With eight tiles left, the remainder were easy to split apart and I went with four tiles which I thought described parts of a woodland, rather than AREAS OF LOW GROUND.

Of all the many COMPUTER PERIPHERALS that money can buy there is one that causes more stress and annoyance that anything else.

I speak of course of the PRINTER: a device that in my experience of going through the major brands will chose to not work when you need it most, run out of its ludicrously expensive ink at an alarming rate and develop faults that will take days to fix.

Anyway, I digress — today’s groups were all very gettable, although STARTING WITH BIRD HOMOPHONES eluded me, probably because my CRANIUM malfunctioned due to triggering the aforementioned printer frustrations.

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

Not being familiar with the work of KOOL-AID MAN put me at a disadvantage today and was the reason for my single mistake.

While I knew that CLIFFORD of Big Red Dog fame, DEADPOOL and MR. KRABS favored the color red. I was less certain about the fourth, so selected HUMPTY DUMPTY in the belief that he favored a thick red belt across his eggy mid-riff. Fortunately, I corrected my error at the next opportunity.

I am kicking myself that I didn’t see the RHYMING COMPOUND WORDS — I did fleetingly think that they could all be album titles by the yellow group of PROG BANDS but went for the CLASSIC WEDDING GIFTS instead.

The phonetic alphabet featuring HOTEL, FOXTROT and crucially Yankee — not YANKEES — was today’s trap/joke and were it not for the easy to spot DANCE STYLES I may well have fallen for it. 

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is also the name of a great album by Wilco, but I digress…

I got the blue group next, thinking that all four words described seemed like labels you’d put on a report rather than CONTENT SORTING OPTIONS ONLINE, which considering I do quite a lot of Content Sorting I really should have seen.

The final group I found was IN A MONOPOLY BOX, although I can’t say I have ever thought of the street name cards as being a DEED.

This was one of those games of Connections where I made zero mistakes despite being uncertain about every group.

My big disappointment was that even though I managed to get the group containing the two unusual tiles, the reward was that it was only the green group. The big dot is an alternative to x and is used in algebra to avoid confusion. Not that I knew this at the time of course!

Meanwhile, having grown up watching Adam West’s Batman I am annoyed that I missed the Bang! Boom! And Pow! At the start of BANGKOK, BOOMER, and POWDER.

Seeing tiles for FRIENDS, SCRUBS and COMMUNITY in the grid I immediately thought of the classic sitcoms.

Getting a fourth was hard, though — at first I thought ROCKS may have been a spin-off from 30 Rock that I had never heard of, but instead I took a gamble on WINGS. This airplane-based comedy never made it to the UK, but I have some vague memory of it featuring various characters from Cheers.

After this triumph the rest of the board was rather elementary — not that I spotted STARTING WITH INSULTS. Kudos if you saw those.

My mistake came when I was on the right track but thought BOLSTER was one of the KINDS OF CHAIR and BEANBAG was absolutely not. But then, anything can be a chair if you’re sitting on it.

After finally getting the blue group correct, I had doubts over WORDS REPEATED IN HIT SONG TITLES — LOUIE, NEW YORK, REBEL all seemed correct, but I gambled on JUMPIN’ as I’d completely forgotten about the Destiny’s Child song Jumpin’ Jumpin’; KNOCK-KNOCK almost tricked me, but I resisted.

The yellow group, meanwhile, was one I ignored thinking the silent Ks were too obvious. How will Connections get KNICKS into a game next?

I just about managed to avoid threading all the Chinese food items into a group (DIM SUM, FORTUNE COOKIE, CHOPSTICKS, SOY SAUCE) after thinking that MISO PASTE, VEGEMITE and SOY SAUCE must be linked. I was thinking of fermentation rather than unami, which is how I came to add PARMESAN.

My past life working in publishing — including at a subsidiary of Time — helped me to see STARTING WITH MAGAZINES. All four are quite rare in that they are still thriving; most of the titles I worked for no longer exist.

Finally, with eight tiles left I was able to pull off a mistake-free game after spotting tally, sum, total and count at the end of ENDING IN SYNONYMS FOR “AGGREGATE”.

Of course my first thought was to pair KINDLE and NOOK and then go in search of other E-book products. Alas, I couldn't see any.

My failure to find any other reading tech ended up being the key to my success, as I saw a link with the starts of KINDLE and CLASSIC and put together a purple group about sorting — or as Connections put it, STARTING WITH SYNONYMS FOR "ILK". 

My mistake came in attempting to collect ALCOVE, where I included MOUTH instead of NOOK; my thinking was that NOOK was something you leaned on, rather than something indented, something the old phrase “nooks and crannies” might have helped me get right.

I knew it was wrong, but I couldn’t help but feel tempted to create a group containing RED TAPE, BLUE CHEESE, BLACK SWAN. Fortunately, I resisted.

Kudos if you spotted WHAT "HOOPS" MIGHT REFER TO — for me to have done that would have taken sizable restraint as I roared through the more obvious links.

My only hesitation was the collection of CREAMY SALAD DRESSINGS, as I thought GREEN GODDESS was the name of a smoothie — but then that’s kind of what salad dressings are really.

MONKSHOOD is one of those flowers that is also known as Wolfsbane, which features as a poison in Harry Potter’s wizarding world and Agatha Christie’s 4:50 from Paddington.

However, I got the FLOWERS group not because I recognized MONKSHOOD, LARKSPUR, PHLOX, and ANEMONE but merely because I thought they sounded like they could all be flowers.   

In fact that was the case with all of today’s groups — I couldn’t quite see the connections but i knew just about enough. Somedays that’ll do just fine.

Seeing TEA PARTY and MASSACHUSETTS beside each other my first thought was Boston; I added GLOBE because the Boston Globe newspaper sounded like a possibility and took a chance on CREAM PIE. I pressed “submit” fully expecting to get a purple first — alas, it was completely wrong.

At this point I thought of the most common appearance of a CREAM PIE — as a practical joke — and managed to compile the four CLASSIC SLAPSTICK PROPS. 

As it often does, getting the first group unlocked the others — although it did take me two attempts to get THINGS THAT SPIN as I had POCKET WATCH instead of GRINDSTONE.

It is always a thrill when you get a purple first, but sometimes that thrill is lessened by how easy the connection was.

That was the case for me today, with the four WORDS BEFORE "STORY" IN MOVIE TITLES — but then I am wondering if it is like this quite often for people more used to getting the hardest category before any of the easier ones.

Far more likely is that today was a relaxing day designed to lull us into a false sense of weekend security before dealing out a quartet of impenetrable groups tomorrow.

A  “starting with…” special that made the second words in every single tile irrelevant — meaning that the Connections setters just made all of these tiles two words just to play with our brains. Thanks.

Realizing this trick did make this game easier, but I still got caught out trying to put my groups of four together. 

STARTING WITH INCANTATIONS and STARTING WITH ANIMAL GROUP NAMES I got easily enough; MURDER MYSTERY was the giveaway for the latter. However, I fell to pieces after that and was lucky to escape with a victory.

At first, my remaining eight tiles conjured up an alternative phonetic alphabet that grouped DELTA AIRLINES, ECHO PARK, MIRROR SELFIE, and QUOTE UNQUOTE; after getting a lucky one away, I finally grasped STARTING WITH SYNONYMS FOR “REPEAT”.

I had a hunch that today would be a tough day, but I didn’t suspect how frustrating it would be.

Initially, I had the joy of a purple first — although it did take me two tries, as although I could see the thread I couldn’t think of any other digital wallet system after Paypal, Venmo and Stripe. ELLE, which I now know is for Zelle, was a guess.

PARTS OF A WORKOUT ROUTINE I got easily enough, but where I fell down was THINGS WITH HORNS and failing to think laterally with BRASS BAND. Ah well, roll on Friday.

It’s funny how sometimes you can get to the right answer by going in completely the wrong direction.

After getting PARTS OF A THEATER (although I was far from certain about CATWALK) I thought I spied a second theatrical group and put together METHOD, CHARACTER, PAGE, and LINE, thinking that this described four different types of acting — I was imagining that PAGE and LINE actors were ones who strictly followed scripts.

Fortunately, after getting one away I realized it was a breakdown of the written word as in things COUNTED IN DOCUMENT WORD COUNTS. I fully expect to be punished for my luck tomorrow.

My detours today included ways to get into a door (KEYS, PASSWORD, AXE), terms of endearment (BABE, ANGEL) and the one that cost me a mistake, ways to protect something (PASSWORD, TRADEMARK, SECRET, KEYS).

Fortunately, these avenues didn't take me too far off course and I even managed to get a purple first. 

KEYS, SKINS and AXE I knew were musician slang for piano, drums and guitar, but BONE was a new one; I was expecting a percussion instrument before I googled it and found out it was short for trombone.

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

I was going great until I hit a wall with my final eight tiles. 

Then it took me four guesses before I got SLANG FOR HEAD, as I was convinced I was looking for something to do with tropical island life or things you need for beach parties. I got there eventually.

I should have known it was going to be a tough day after LANDFORMS BY WATER was revealed as a mere yellow; ISTHMUS seemed pretty obscure. Then, I thought I was home and dry after getting the purple group of THE ____ MAN MOVIES thinking The Omega Man would have caught some people out.

Of all the MUSIC GENRE SUFFIXES, I reckon WAVE is the most common — Synthwave, Darkwave, Coldwave, Chillwave, Emowave, Doomwave, Dreamwave, Retrowave, New Wave, Old Wave… you can basically put any word in front of it and invent a movement. CORE, on the other hand, is harder to attach.

Having said all this I was with a journalist the other day who claims that he invented the term Brit POP — a genre which originally put hundreds of other vaguely similar guitar bands under the same umbrella. Now it’s an era that is synonymous with just one act, Oasis. 

I went to see Oasis once in the early 2000s and myself and the other inebriated people I was with thought it would be amusing to just sing the name “Barry” to every single one of their lyrics. It must have been very annoying. Such an act today would get us thrown out of Great Britain for treason.

Anyway I digress…
