He's tied with six others, including Matt Fitzpatrick, Gary Woodland, Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm, but of the eight players at 2-under or better, Stevens was the only one who went out in the worst of the conditions.

And they were bad. It resembled crazy golf at times, with balls being blown around the greens but off them too.

It's at Shinnecock Hills that Brooks Koepka won the US Open with a score of 1-over in 2018, and that Retief Goosen's 4-under topped the charts in 2004 – after the seventh green had to be hand-watered mid-round.

The links-style course on Long Island has drawn the ire of numerous greats, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy among them, because it's exposed to the winds and its greens are fast, firm and unforgiving. Having thrown their toys out of the pram over the setup of last month's PGA Championship, we'd hazard a guess that many of the game's top stars aren't going to enjoy this tournament whatsoever.

That said, tournament organizers haven't narrowed the fairways as they normally do, which should play into the hands of big – often wayward – hitters McIlroy, Cameron Young and Bryson DeChambeau in particular.

This is Scottie Scheffler's first attempt at the career Grand Slam, which has only been achieved by six other golfers, and the final round just so happens to fall on his 30th birthday.

JJ Spaun drained a 64-foot birdie putt on the 18th to beat Robert MacIntyre to the US Open title last year, while Koepka edged Tommy Fleetwood by a single stroke on the tournament's last visit to Shinnecock. While all around him lost their heads, Aaron Rai held his nerve to conquer the difficult PGA Championship setup. They'll all be worth keeping an eye on this weekend.

The young Swedish superstar Ludvig Aberg made the biggest move on Saturday, carding a 69 to sit six shots off leader McIlroy, while Patrick Reed also put himself back into contention. Shane Lowry bogeyed late on on Saturday but has the game to post a good score around Augusta, but world number one Scottie Scheffler again struggled.

Brian Harman (12-under) has one hand on the Claret Jug and the first major title of his career at the start of Round 4 of the 151st Open Championship, but the identity of two men on his tail means the American won't be taking anything for granted.

Cameron Young (7-under) shot a superb final round, which included an eagle on the final hole, at The Open a year ago to almost snatch victory at the death, while the six-stroke lead that Harman currently holds over Jon Rahm (6-under) doesn't feel as comfortable as it might have had the Spaniard not shot a course-record 63 on Saturday. 

Tommy Fleetwood's dreams of becoming the first English winner of The Open since Nick Faldo in 1992 are fading after his level-par Round 3 allowed the rest of the field to close the gap, but he's still tied for fourth, albeit with Viktor Hovland, Antoine Rozner, Sepp Straka and Jason Day fo company.

The worst of the weather has largely held off so far, but what a day this would be for the wind and rain to arrive. It could make for a particularly messy par-3 17th, which was completely remodeled with the express purpose of keeping things interesting right until the very end of Round 4.

LIV Golf London 2023 preview

One year ago the eyes of the golfing world turned to the Centurion Club in Hertfordshire, UK, as the hugely controversial LIV Golf, a breakaway tour bankrolled by Saudi Arabia, held its inaugural tournament. Fronted by the likes of Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson, the 54-hole event was full of fresh ideas but attracted plenty of controversy. 

A lot has changed since that moment, with the shock announcement last month that the LIV Golf Series will merge with the PGA and DP World Tours. This has helped the fledgling tour gain even more attention and there will be plenty of interest when the tournament gets underway on July 7. 

Last year’s winner Charl Schwartzel will be out to defend his crown but the South African will face a stern challenge against a field that includes 2022 Open champion Cameron Smith, big-hitting American Bryson DeChambeau and five-time Major winner Brooks Koepka. American Talor Gooch is the in-form player, having won three of the eight tour events this season, while there will be plenty of home support for the British trio of Lee Westwood, Paul Casey and Ian Poulter. 

As is the norm in LIV events, the tournament will be played over 54 holes with 12 teams and including 48 players. They will contest for a total purse of a staggering $25 million, with the winner receiving $4 million and the winning team earning $3 million.

Only six players have won multiple PGA Tour titles this season, and three of them are in action at Detroit Golf Club for the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic. Reigning champion Tony Finau shot a 26-under-par here last year, so you can expect birdies and eagles galore, especially from Max Homa if his putter stays red-hot.

The world No.9 is one of those aforementioned two-time titleists in action in Michigan this week – along with Finau and last weekend's Travelers Championship winner Keegan Bradley – and he's been at one with the flatstick of late, ranking eighth for strokes gained putting on the PGA Tour this season.

That bodes nicely on a course that always produces mega scores. Cameron Davis' 18-under in 2021 was the only time in this tournament's four year-history that the victor failed to breach the 20-under-par mark. It's also the only time it went to a playoff.

Two-time major champions Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa are set to make their RMC debuts this week, while Kevin Kisner and Rickie Fowler, who has seven top-10 finishes to his name this season, including one at the US Open, where he started the final round in contention for the win, are also in it to win it.

Charles Schwab Challenge 2023 preview

It may just be a mere seven days since an eventful US PGA Championship, but there's nevertheless a big name field set to take on the Charles Schwab Challenge in Texas this week.

The 2023 edition of the event at the Colonial Country Club boasts boasts a field which includes 11 of the world’s top 30 golfers, with the winner set to walk away with a cool $1,566,000 pay check from a hefty $8.7 million prize pool.

With its inaugural edition taking place way back in 1946, the Charles Schwab Challenge stands as the longest non-major tournament to host an event on a consecutive basis.

This year's event could see a repeat of last year's playoff tussle between eventual champ Sam Burns and Scottie Scheffler, with both man back to battle it out on the Fort Worth course.

Scheffler leads the betting for this year's event with the bookies, ahead of Jordan Spieth.  

The packed field also includes Viktor Hovland, Tony Finau, Sungjae Im, and Tommy Fleetwood, alongside former champions Zach Johnson, Justin Rose, and Kevin Kisner.

2023 PGA Championship preview

Brooks Koepka (-6) leads the field by one shot going into the final round of the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill. Koepka is aiming for a third PGA Championship victory and fifth major. Rory McIlroy (-1) is five shots behind Koepka, who tees off at 2.30pm ET / 7.30pm ET today. 

The PGA Championship returns to the East Course of Oak Hill Country Club for the first time in a decade, which is only a shade longer than McIlroy's ongoing majors drought. The missed cut at the Masters last month came as a devastating setback for the Northern Irishman, who had looked like he was on the right track again, only for his putting game to fall to pieces at the worst possible moment. 

Another player chasing a momentous victory is Jordan Spieth, who only needs the Wanamaker Trophy to complete a career Grand Slam. However, the American has been plagued by a wrist injury of late, and will likely be playing through a fair bit of pain in Rochester. 

Scottie Scheffler, meanwhile, will be looking to close the gap to Rahm, and Justin Thomas, who pulled off the joint-biggest comeback in PGA Championship history to win the tournament a year ago, is hoping to complete a hat-trick of triumphs.
