• Withings users must now pay a hefty premium to sync data to Apple Health

The whole point of using a health and fitness tracker, one would think, is to be able to analyze your data in order to understand your own well-being. New users of Withings’ smart scales, however, have just been stung with an extortionate annual subscription if they want to enjoy that privilege.

As noted on the Withings forum, the company has decided to lock the ability to sync your wellness metrics to the Apple Health app behind a paywall. And this isn’t just some token fee either — you’ll be charged a whopping $99.99 a year. All to do what has always been free (and what many rivals still offer at no cost).

Withings apparently justified the move to the forum poster by citing unspecified “privacy measures” and an “AI connector.” Yet syncing data to Apple Health using the HealthKit framework doesn’t require any server-side processing or hefty AI lifting that might justify such an expensive fee. Instead, the paywall simply gives the impression of being an opportunistic revenue booster.

The post on the Withings forum described the move as a “silent and incredibly anti-consumer change” and pointed out that anyone who signed up on or after October 13, 2026, would be subject to it. Existing users won’t be forced to pay, but that’ll come as little consolation to everyone else.

A controversial move

It’s safe to say that the optics don’t look good for Withings, and users have been understandably upset at the move. The original poster on the Withings forum labeled the change “an obvious cash grab” that “ruins the hardware experience and destroys the trust in the brand,” adding that “We shouldn't have to pay a subscription to access our own health data.”

On Reddit, users echoed that dissatisfaction, saying “$99 a year is a real joke” and, about Withings’ decision-makers, “They are digging their own grave.” Another Redditor asked, “Why would I ever buy another Withings product, let alone recommend the products to other people, if you have to pay a subscription to access your own data?”

A Withings representative tried to explain that the $99.99 Withings+ subscription includes other features — including “An improved Health Assistant” and “Better-priced access to medical services” — but no user seems to care about any of that. The main concern is the decision to lock a fundamental feature behind a paywall when said feature appears to require no additional costs on Withings’ part.

Given the strength of the customer reaction already, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Withings backtrack and unlock Apple Health syncing in the near future. With many users already saying they’ll either ditch their Withings devices or abstain from buying one in the first place, the ball is firmly in Withings’ court.

Wyze BodyScan smart scale: One-minute review

Over the years, Wyze has released a number of high-profile smart products across a range of different industries. They began with cameras but have expanded their range to offer vacuums, lights, locks, and a collection of affordable smart scales.

The Wyze BodyScan sits just underneath their most premium offering, the BodyScan Ultra, and is the brand’s most affordable 8-electrode BIA (which stands for bioelectric impedance analysis, the method many smart scales use to scan users’ bodies) scale. Offering segmental muscle and fat analysis across a user’s arms, legs, and torso, the BodyScan is more capable than almost all other smart scales at this price point.

As for its positioning in the market, the best smart scales for home users range from $20 for the Vitafit Smart Bathroom Scale all the way up to $599.95 / £449.95 / AU$895 for the Withings BodyScan 2. The BodyScan sits just above Vitafit’s offering and sets itself apart with segmented body composition reporting.

The BodyScan boasts a very impressive 4.7-inch LED screen, which displays seven different metrics, including weight, BMI, bone mass, protein, and body water percentage. The display is one of the largest you’ll find on any smart scale, elevating the user experience well beyond the $84.98 price tag.

The remaining metrics, including protein, basal metabolism, and subcutaneous fat, are displayed in the Wyze app. Unfortunately, because the app covers all Wyze products, it’s not a dedicated smart scale platform. The interface provides little more than a presentation of the metrics in both data and graph form. When compared to the premium Withings app experience, the two are worlds apart.

The BodyScan smart scale offers an incredible amount given the small price tag and delivers all the health metrics that most everyday users could ever need. The scale offers only a little more than the basics, but it does those basics without fuss and without stress. If you were to also invest in one of the best smartwatches, then you’d have a great all-round solution for measuring your health progress.

At just $84.98, the Wyze BodyScan scale is one of the most affordable on the market, especially if you’re looking for segmented muscle mass and body fat with a high level of accuracy. The app experience and build quality leave a little to be desired, but at this price point there’s nothing better.

If your budget is even tighter and you have no interest in segmented data, then the Vitafit Smart Bathroom Scale, for around $20, is currently our best budget pick in our best smart scales buying guide. The scale delivers accuracy that we were “blown away” by across a varied set of metrics, including weight, BMI (although you can calculate this yourself at home, the scale does it for you), bone mass, basal metabolic rate, and more.

Wyze BodyScan smart scale: Design

Let’s begin with one of the main highlights of the BodyScan scale, the huge 4.7-inch LED display. I was so surprised to see a screen of this size that I had to check the price point again. In fact, this is the largest of all displays of any scale featured in our best smart scales guide, and for under $100, its inclusion is even more impressive.

The display is located at the top of the base unit and is big, bright, and super clear even when viewed from six feet away. The benefit of packing the display into the base rather than into the handlebar, like the Withings BodyScan 2, is that they can make it significantly larger and thereby display more information at once. As a result, I found myself opening up the app a lot less compared to other brands.

To keep costs down, Wyze has stripped out a number of additional premium features found on the BodyScan Ultra, but the most noticeable compromise is actually the budget material choice and the basic construction quality of the handlebar. The plastic is cheap, it feels lightweight, and it lacks a locking mechanism, so it won’t automatically stay in position when you’re waiting for measurements to be calculated.

I was glad that these issues don’t translate over to the main base unit. Thanks to a solid plastic base and a thick ITO-coated glass panel, I was left confident that it would stand the test of time. My only issue with the base is an aesthetic one. For some unknown reason Wyze has inserted a protruding plastic rectangle into the middle of the glass, which breaks the otherwise sleek design of the panel.

These metrics and the 10 remaining ones are displayed in the Wyze app. These are Muscle Rate, Physical Age, Lean Weight, Visceral Fat, Basal Metabolism, Subcutaneous Fat, Fat Mass, Skeletal Muscle Mass, Segmented Muscle Mass, and Body Fat.

Beyond measurements, the Wyze Bodyscan syncs with Apple Health, Health Connect, and Fitbit. It also recognizes up to eight users automatically and has a nine-month battery life.

Given the sub-$100 price tag, I didn’t expect very much from the Wyze BodyScan. Not only were my expectations exceeded with regard to design and features but also with overall performance. Despite not having any bells and whistles, the BodyScan manages to do all the basics incredibly well.

The overall experience of using the scale is a positive one. The large display presents seven of the most common metrics, which means most users won’t need to check the app each time they step off the scales. However, when you do find yourself drilling down into the metrics, you’ll discover a very basic app experience. Data is clearly laid out, but there’s no analysis or health advice, as is found in the Withings app. On the plus side, there’s no subscription either.

Part of the reason for the basic app experience is that it handles all Wyze product types and has a significant interface bias towards its cameras. The positive of that is that if you’ve bought into the Wyze ecosystem, then you’ll be able to manage all your smart devices in one place.

Unfortunately, the app issues don’t end there: there’s no support for a multi-user profile, so other family members will have to download the app on their own phone. That’s fine for other adult members or older children but not if you’re wanting to track the health of your young child.

More positively, when compared to the Withings BodyScan 2 and the RunStar 8E SmartScan Pro, the scale delivered accurate results. This was especially true for the key metrics of weight, BMI, muscle mass, and body fat. There were only two metrics with issues, and those were body water and basal metabolism.

Thanks to the electrodes in the handlebar, the BodyScan is capable of reporting body composition across five separate segments. Measurements are overlaid onto a body graphic within the app, so it’s quick and easy to see where imbalances are located.

The overall speed of the unit was good, with weight being calculated in a matter of seconds and the remaining 16 metrics taking less than 20 seconds. This is about the same length of time as most other scales we’ve tested.

Each time I used the scale, I measured all 17 available metrics, which enabled me to track accuracy over time as well as whether it was susceptible to fluctuating results. Because of the lack of multi-profile support through one account, I didn’t use the scale with my children.

RunStar 8E SmartScan Pro: One minute review

The RunStar 8E SmartScan Pro is one of the best smart scales designed for ease of health monitoring for the entire family, fitness enthusiasts who want metrics on their body fat and muscle, and general users desiring to track their body composition over time.

The smart scale delivers 28 metrics, which, for this price, is rather impressive. There’s also a pregnancy and baby mode, which offers safe measurements thanks to its zero-current technology (as opposed to most smart scales, which use electrical currents sent through the body to determine body composition). The only features I was left craving were heart-related, including heart rate and blood oxygen.

During testing, almost all results were within reasonable variation compared to the more expensive Withings BodyScan 2. Seven of the metrics are clearly displayed on the large color LCD display, with the full array of data presented in the easy-to-use Starfit app. If you can’t justify the extra spend, then the 8E Pro is a solid alternative to the top-range Withings.

Setting up the smart scale was easy thanks to the step-by-step guide in the app and a strong Bluetooth signal. I liked the ability to create multiple profiles so that every member of my family could use it. I also appreciated that it automatically detects who is standing on the scale, based on its previously recorded measurements.

The scale itself is well-built with 6mm tempered glass and gold-colored electrodes. The black plastic material used throughout the base and handlebar is solid and robust, with no concerns that damage would be done to the internals.

The display is a TFT-LCD, which delivers when it comes to clarity, brightness, and definition. Unfortunately, the display is covered by a thin layer of plastic that is flexible enough to allow a user to press it in and touch the screen itself, potentially causing damage.

All in, the RunStar 8E SmartScan Pro is a respectable smart scale that delivers accurate results inside a solid, compact body. If you can forgo heart health measurements and don’t mind a cheap-feeling display in comparison to the rest of the scale, then this smart scale will deliver everything you need.

RunStar sells a wide range of smart scales, with the budget-friendly RunStar 4E at the bottom end and the 8E Ultra at the other. Sitting just below their most premium Ultra offering is the RunStar 8E SmartScan Pro, to use its full title, at $219.99 USD / £218 GBP, although this is often significantly discounted, at times going as low as $129.98 / £168.

A similarly priced and specced alternative is the Withings BodyFit. Both are DEXA-validated, although the BodyFit claims to be “ideal for GLP-1 drug users who are prioritizing keeping muscle while losing fat.” If you’re looking for even more superior results and are happy paying a premium for it, then the Withings BodyScan 2 is a good choice.

RunStar 8E SmartScan Pro: Design

The large 5 x 7 cm color screen displays seven key metrics: weight, heart rate, BMI, body fat, muscle mass, bone mass, and body water. Each metric is measured and presented one at a time before providing a full read-out of all seven metrics at the end. The display is clear and bright, although only protected by a thin layer of clear plastic, which is unfortunately so flexible that it presses in quite significantly when forced.

To measure 28 different metrics in total, which include the initial seven displayed on the scale plus additional metrics viewable in the app, the 8E Pro uses eight electrodes: four for the feet and four for the hands. These are positioned to accommodate a wide range of people with varying feet and hand sizes. The retractable handlebar used to connect your hands performs adequately and, when not in use, attaches to the base via magnets.

The bulk of the scale is made from strong plastic and covered in a thick 6 mm tempered glass, which protects the unit and houses the four foot electrodes. At the bottom of the base are four large rubber feet, which ensure the device remains in position at all times.

The overall design looks and feels premium, with the gold-colored electrodes setting the scale apart from cheaper and more basic alternatives. The unit contains a single non-removable lithium polymer battery that is recharged via USB-C. A full recharge lasts for three months. Despite regular use from five family members, we experienced zero issues with wear and tear.

RunStar says every metric reading is DEXA-validated with ≥98.5% correlation. Accurate results and precise body composition tracking are produced thanks to the advanced dual-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). This smart scale provides the features and accuracy for users who want to work towards a specific weight, track their health, and hit their fitness goals.

Unlike cheaper whole-body smart scales such as the RunStar 4E, the 8E Pro records measurements and provides analysis across five key body zones: arms, legs, and trunk. Providing weight and muscle data across five key areas of the body enables users to quickly see if their body is imbalanced and work towards specific goals for targeted areas of their body.

As well as viewing seven metrics on the display, if you sync the device with the Starfit app, you can see the full set of 28 metrics alongside more detailed tracking and analysis. The app is easy-to-use and laid out intuitively. If you plan on using the smart scale with multiple people, then up to 24 profiles can be set up using the app.

Other features include the ability to sync with Apple Health, Google Health and other major platforms as well as generate printable, clinic-grade reports. Finally, the 8E Pro operates with zero current, so it’s safe to use during pregnancy and with babies.

To provide comparison data, I took measurements from the Withings BodyScan 2 at the same time as the 8E Pro. Both are DEXA verified, with the BodyScan 2 validated up to 99% and the 8E Pro up to ≥98.5%. The two smart scales measure a similar set of metrics and are easily compared through the two apps.

Beginning with weight, I weighed in at 61.4 kg, which was only 170 grams different from the Withings. As for BMI, a reading of 19% wasn’t far off the 18.2% reported by the comparison scale. The 8E Pro is quick to deliver these measurements and does so prior to all other body composition metrics.

As for fat-related readings, the 8E Pro provided measurements for visceral fat, subcutaneous fat, and body fat percentage that were all within reasonable deviations compared to the Withings. When I came to measure body fat mass, I was surprised to find that it was the Withings that threw up problematic readings, and the 8E Pro proved significantly more accurate.

Accurate and acceptable readings continued for muscle rate, lean body mass, body water percentage, and basal metabolism. The app provides independent fat and muscle breakdowns for arms, legs, and trunk. Despite these being clearly presented as an overlay on a 2D illustration of a person, I much preferred the 3D graphic that is present in the Withings app.

The 8E Pro delivered similar results to the BodyScan 2 in almost all areas. Considering the 8E Pro costs half the price of the BodyScan 2, I think the RunStar is a useful and viable alternative for anyone wanting accurate results at a more affordable price.

Smart scales measure weight, body fat, muscle mass, and a whole host of other metrics through a collection of electrodes at the soles of your feet. The best smart scales are perfect for fitness enthusiasts, family health monitoring, and those who want to track changes to their body over time, but Withings wants to push the boundaries of what is possible in the smart scale category. Not satisfied with simple measurements like the ones listed above, Withings has launched the BodyScan 2, and it represents a significant step in innovation.

According to Withings, the BodyScan 2 is “the world's first longevity station. It is the only consumer device that transforms your daily weigh-in into a complete cardiometabolic assessment, revealing whether your lifestyle is adding or taking years off your healthy life.” This scale is all about trends over time and those who care about optimizing their health now, for the reward of future gains.

Building on the original BodyScan scale, version two introduces a number of new features and design changes. The display has been moved from the base to the handlebar, offering a more pleasing user experience. New features include SpO2 measurements, hypertension screening, heart and ‘vascular age’ estimations, and reporting on the risk of unstable glycaemia.

All of these improvements make the scale $200 / £100 more expensive than the original. That’s a significant increase given that even the most premium offerings from most other brands cost less than half the price, but I suppose electronics in all categories have been getting more expensive this year with the components crisis. And if you want access to the complete set of features, then you’ll have to part ways with $9.95 / £8.95 per month for a Withings+ subscription, making this a premium-only, money-no-object smart scale option.

That said, the BodyScan 2 offers the very best in features and build quality. The scale is able to track over 40 biomarkers and, through very clever processing, can report heart findings that no other scale is capable of. It also boasts a robust and premium build with the chassis being made from reinforced aluminum.

Withings has taken some of the most innovative hardware found in the best smartwatches and best smart rings and combined it with traditional smart scale technology. The result is one of the most advanced smart scales on the consumer market.

The BodyScan 2 is one of the most expensive scales on the market, period. At $599.95 / £449.95 / $$895 AUS, the scale is marketed at only the most serious of users who have the disposable income to match their health goals.

Unfortunately, the costs don’t end there. If you’d like to unlock the premium in-app experience, Withings+, then you’ll have to part with a further $9.95 / £8.95 per month. The membership provides clinical experts at your disposal, an AI health assistant to convert your history into future progress, and a long-term assessment of your aging.

The spec of the BodyScan 2 sets it apart from the rest of the competition. If you turn to the likes of RunStar, then you’ll find their most premium smart scale, the 8E Ultra, costing less than half the price of the BodyScan 2. This shows that unless you need features to measure and estimate heart age, vascular age, and risk of unstable glycaemia and hypertension, then you’ll be able to save a lot of money by going for one of the other options on our best smart scales list.

The BodyScan 2 exudes the premium build quality that you’d expect given its eye-watering price tag. The aesthetic is smart, professional, and well thought through. With a reinforced aluminum chassis, you also won’t have many concerns should it be dropped on a hard tiled floor or knocked against a sink pedestal.

At the heart of the experience is a 640 x 172px color LCD screen, which is bright, vibrant, and clear. With it, users can quickly and easily track their progress without even needing to launch the Withings app. This is neatly located in the retractable handle, if you choose to use it, so your data will be closer to your eye and more easily read.

The base is covered with a large-format glass platform that contains eight integrated Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) electrodes for high-precision accuracy and support for all foot sizes and up to 200 kg / 440 lb maximum capacity. The base features a black and blue hued striped pattern, which elevates the smart scale beyond looking like a glass slab.

Extruding out of the base is the smart retractable handle with an automatic locking mechanism. It works smoothly and reliably locks into position, and its length means it’ll cater to even the tallest of users. Withings has also integrated two buttons into the handle to allow for easy operation of the unit.

As well as housing the color screen, the handle comprises four stainless steel electrodes to take the total number across the scale up to 12. Through these sensors, the BodyScan 2 is capable of performing cardiometabolic assessments and a whole-body analysis.

The BodyScan 2 represents a significant advancement in body tracking for the consumer market. It does, of course, continue to carry out the basics admirably, but beyond that, the scale introduces new measurements and features that have never been seen before in a home device. These features include hypertension, heart age, and blood oxygen level, with glucose resilience tracking coming soon.

First up, hypertension notifications. By analyzing patterns in the data collected by the BodyScan 2, Withings is able to detect signs associated with hypertension. The presence of these patterns is not a medical assessment that hypertension is present but rather the reporting of it as a heightened possibility, just like the best Apple Watches. If it detects a pattern, you’ll receive a notification through the Withings app.

Then there’s the heart and vascular age predictors, which are unlocked with a Withings+ membership. According to Withings, this is an indicator of the “heart's mechanical efficiency, based on how quickly your heart reacts to each beat and how effectively it pumps blood.”

The final new feature to mention is blood oxygen tracking, which is achieved through a multi-wave PPG sensor built into the handle. Through this infrared technology, the smart scale measures SpO2 in the same way as the best smartwatches. These three features provide a complete cardiometabolic assessment, which sets the BodyScan 2 apart from the competition.

To provide a comparison set of measurements, I compared the BodyScan 2 with the RunStar 8E Pro. Both brands claim over 98.5% DEXA validation and deliver a similar set of metrics, although the BodyScan 2 offers the most.

Let’s start with the basics. The BodyScan 2 recorded my weight at 61.23kg and BMI at 18.2 compared to 61.4 and 19 on the RunStar. Comparative measurements continued across muscle rate, subcutaneous fat, visceral fat, base metabolism, and a number of other fat and mass metrics.

All readings are quickly available on the Withings app, which allows for deeper interrogation and tracking over time. Body composition data is displayed on a 3D graphic, which is engaging. I did, however, find it difficult to navigate around the Withings app with the sheer amount of data and features causing the interface to feel cluttered.

As accurate as the BodyScan 2 is for basic measurements, it is not these metrics that would cause someone to purchase a BodyScan 2. I was much more interested in the new features, including blood oxygen level measurements and heart age predictions. To test SpO2 readings, I compared it to my Garmin Tactix 8 and found that its readings were similar and consistent.

Vascular age reporting was less reliable. The first time I measured it, the app told me that my vascular age was four years older than my actual age. As you can imagine, that was a little bit of a shock. I measured it a week later, at a similar time of the day, and Withings reported only a one-year difference from my actual age. That’s a significant difference in a short space of time, which makes it difficult to entirely rely upon the findings and decide whether health changes are required.

Offering cardiometabolic measurements and estimations via a smart scale puts the BodyScan 2 at the forefront of the industry. They have introduced tech that has never before been seen in a smart scale, and the level of innovation is truly impressive. That said, I think we’re a few iterations off, seeing a smart scale delivering the necessary accuracy to make their estimations accurate enough to be relied upon to be highly accurate within some newer metrics, only a general trend indication.

How I tested

My family (two adults and children) used the BodyScan 2 scale for several weeks. Having several family members made it possible to try out the multi-profile functionality, but most of the time I spent testing the scale using myself as a subject. I focused in on some of the new features that set the BodyScan 2 apart, such as vascular age and SpO2. Having the scale located in a busy family bathroom enabled me to determine the robustness and durability of the device.

As the Google Pixel Watch 5 launched last week alongside a slew of new Pixel phones, one of the most interesting new developments was the introduction of the Pixel Watch's new Health Guardian suite of tools, including Insulin Resistance Trends.

Insulin Resistance Trends showcases a month-by-month breakdown containing estimations of how your body responded to blood sugar spikes — a crucial component in weight management and the development of Type-2 diabetes.

Body composition — your ratio of different kinds of fat, skeletal muscle, and bone — is also an excellent marker of insulin resistance and metabolic health, so body scans are often used to help determine insulin resistance. Body comp is often measured with medical-grade 'DXA' scans, which use X-Rays, or commercially available devices at home.

These home devices can be the best smart scales or even some smartwatches, such as the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2. Without medical DXA scanners, they usually use a process called 'bioelectrical impedence analysis', or BIA. A low-level electric current is sent through the user's body, moving through fat, muscle, and bone at different speeds. The speed of the electrical current helps the device estimate the percentages of each material in the body: a useful thing to have on a health-monitoring device like a smartwatch.

However, Google is busy researching an even more accurate version of a body scan without using any specialist equipment or BIA kit — in fact, it's just a smartphone camera and an onboard AI model. This in-development feature is called PhotoScan, appropriately.

According to its research blog, Google has been developing PhotoScan by matching smartphone photographs of subjects with medical-grade DXA scans, along with other subject information, then running it all through an AI model. The AI model eventually achieved 'strong DXA agreement' when estimating body fat percentage and other metrics, leading to 'near-DXA accuracy for predicting insulin resistance'.

The researchers conclude that 'clinical DXA imaging delivers the most accurate body composition but lacks scalability, whereas wearable BIA sensors offer convenience but are limited to basic body fat percentage.

'Our PhotoScan approach offers a promising middle ground, estimating granular body composition from standard smartphone imagery with near-DXA accuracy.' Sorry, Samsung — it looks like we'll be pivoting away from BIA sensors and towards smartphone cameras for body fat percentage calculation in future.

While the technology doesn't seem to be commercially available yet, it does 'demonstrate the feasibility of smartphone-based body composition estimation,' and I'd be surprised not to see it make its way to the best Pixel phones eventually.

RunStar 4E Body Scale: One minute review

The RunStar 4E is an affordable smart scale that costs little more than a standard set of electrical scales. Considering it measures more than 20 different body composition metrics, the low price becomes even more impressive. As you’d expect at this price, there are limitations though, with the inability to measure composition accurately (fat-to-muscle ratios and so on) being the most glaring one.

Despite these shortcomings, everything, from app setup to using the scales, is smooth, straightforward, and wonderfully intuitive. Connecting the scales to the companion app is quick and easy thanks to a robust Bluetooth signal, and the option to create multiple users within the app is a nice touch for a family of my size and stage.

The weight measurement consistently measured around 0.4% more than the pricier RunStar 8E SmartScan Pro, which isn’t a massive deviation. For almost all the other measurements, the RunStar 4E adopts a bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) measuring method through four metal sensors located on the top panel of the scale.

BMI measurements were almost identical every single time compared to the 8E SmartScan Pro (probably because it's a mathematical calculation not dependent on the electrodes), but almost all other composition measurements offered up a deviation of between 3 and 30%. For these reasons, it’s not likely to make it into our best smart scales guide. That said, for the price, the RunStar 4E is a respectable set of scales for weight and quick BMI calculation.

At $33.54 USD / £31.00 GBP, the RunStar 4E Body Scale is incredibly affordable as far as smart scales go. It might lack full body measurements for fat loss and fitness and muscle gain, but for that pleasure you’ll have to part with a lot more money and shoot for something like the RunStar 8E SmartScan Pro, Withings Body Scan series, or Wyze Scale X.

A comparable option in terms of price and features would be the Vitafit Smart Bathroom Scale, which scored a respectable four stars in our testing. Positives included the easy connection, extremely fast results, and the comprehensive app. Our reviewer had some concerns over accuracy, but overall it’s a solid choice.

The scales are FSA and HSA eligible, which means US users are able to use them in conjunction with designating pre-tax money to be taken from pay and put towards paying medical expenses.

At the heart of the RunStar 4E is a bright LCD display that provides an easy-to-access readout of six metrics: weight, body fat, BMI, muscle mass, body water, and bone mass. The display cycles through these with a few seconds given over to each stat. Unfortunately there’s no way to move to a specific metric using on-device controls, although the full list is available in the accompanying app.

At 11.02 x 11.02 x 0.78 inches and 3.17 pounds, the smart scale is both compact and lightweight. As a result, finding a suitable spot for it in a bathroom or bedroom shouldn’t be a problem. It can also be easily stowed on its side in a cupboard while not in use.

The scale is covered in 6mm tempered glass, which protects against scratches and cracks, neither of which I suffered despite my children doing their accidental best to inflict a dent or two. Underneath you’ll find four anti-slip silicone feet.

Quick and effortless connectivity is via Bluetooth, and power is delivered courtesy of three AAA batteries. USB-C charging would have been better for the environment, but with minimal power required, I don’t envisage getting through too many batteries.

The RunStar 4E boasts an impressive feature set for such an affordable scale, or at least it would be if the extras were more impressive. At its core, the scale is capable of measuring over 20 metrics, including weight, BMI, body fat percentage, body mass, muscle mass, body water rate, bone mass, and visceral fat. Six of these are visible on the smart scale itself, while the full set is reported in the Starfit RunStar app.

To accommodate families, the Starfit app enables users to set up multiple profiles, one for each family member. By entering the height and target weight of each person, the app is able to provide more accurate and informed reporting. The app also tracks measurements over time and plots them on a chart for trend analysis.

The first thing to note is that the RunStar 4E is quick. In a matter of seconds the scale is able to measure over 20 different body composition metrics and display them instantly in the app. There’s no waiting around for calculations to be made and zero lag when the display is cycling through the six core metrics.

Weight, as you’d expect, is measured prior to all the body composition elements. Having measured myself hundreds of times, I found that the 4E regularly mismeasured my weight by around 0.4% compared to the RunStar 8E SmartScan Pro and, indeed, my rudimentary pair of digital weight scales. It would be unfair to judge the scales too harshly for this small deviation, especially given the price.

According to research published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, one study conducted on smart scales shows a median margin of error of around 0.3kgs, so I can forgive it some small deviation. That said, if you’re requiring absolute accuracy, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

BMI was also consistently measured more or less accurately, with deviations of only 0.5%. If you’re only concerned with quick measurements such as weight and BMI, then the RunStar 4E won’t cause you any problems.

Getting into the specifics, musculoskeletal-related measurements using BIA include muscle, muscle mass, and skeletal muscle rates. The first two measured around a 3% deviation from the 8E SmartScan Pro, but it was the skeletal muscle rate which was most concerning, measuring a deviation of nearly 15%.

Unfortunately variable results continue with fat-related metrics. Compared to the SmartScan Pro, body fat percentage, subcutaneous fat, and body fat mass all reported a massive 30% deviation.

Despite comparably poor results on some metrics, it’s worth remembering that most of these are specialized measurements, and to expect too much from a smart scale that costs $33.54 / £31.00 might be a little unreasonable.

That said, it would be preferable for consumers if smart scale manufacturers would only include metrics that they could report on accurately. The RunStar 4E also measures consistently with itself, which means it can still be trusted as a weight loss tool assuming you allow for the margin of error.

Think all the best smart scales are just about measuring your weight and giving you a couple of handy pointers? That’s not what Withings wants you to believe, as it’s dubbing its new Body Scan 2 device – unveiled this week at CES 2026 – “the world’s first science-backed longevity station.”

That all sounds pretty grand for a smart scale, so what has prompted the apparent upgrade? According to Withings, it comes down to a few things: the inclusion of over 60 different biomarkers for your health, plus personalized artificial intelligence (AI) integrations that give you tailored and actionable advice. The idea is that these will help improve your long-term health, hence the “longevity station” moniker.

Aside from its software, the Body Scan 2 has a set of eight electrodes in the base and a further four in its retractable handle. There’s an LCD screen that displays scan results, plus two buttons for answering personalized questions relating to your health. On the inside is a rechargeable battery that lasts up to 15 months on a single charge.

The Body Scan 2 starts by offering up a “90-second multimodal longevity assessment” that scans various metrics, including your heart pumping performance and electrical activity, hypertension risk, artery health, cellular health and metabolic efficiency, and your glycemic regulation. Withings says these tests have been chosen for their “predictive value on long-term health,” so taking action on them could help improve your health in the long run.

Once this scan has been completed, the device seeks to find reversible deviations from your health baselines. After that, it gives you actionable steps to tackle the problems and increase your wellbeing. That includes a Health Trajectory score, which Withings says “offers a clear view of long-term health” and aims to motivate you by showing you how changes you make now could improve your outlook for the future.

Withings vs Wyze

The Withings Body Scan 2 follows shortly after the similarly named Wyze BodyScan scale, which also came with a built-in handle for measuring extra health metrics.

However, at $599.95 (around £445 / AU$895), Withings’ offering costs significantly more than the $119.98 Wyze scale. At the same time, it comes with more built-in electrodes, can measure far more metrics, and comes with AI included, which the Wyze device does not.

Both devices give you a high-tech way to measure your wellbeing and make changes to your lifestyle. The Withings Body Scan 2’s focus incorporates more future-gazing features, though, so it might be one to consider if you want to adjust your lifestyle now in order to benefit your prospective self.

Withings says the Body Scan 2 will be released in Q2 2026 and will be available on Withings’ website, Amazon, and at “select retailers.” We’ll have to see how it compares to the competition when it releases and whether it has what it takes to top the smart scale charts.

When it comes to understanding your health and fitness, a smart scale can be a useful weapon in your arsenal. Right now, our pick for the best smart scale is the Xiaomi Mi Body Composition Scale 2, but smart home firm Wyze is hoping to knock it off its perch with its latest effort.

That product is the Wyze Scale Ultra BodyScan. This set of scales boasts “professional-grade body composition analysis,” Wyze claims, and sits at the top end of its range of smart body scales, alongside the likes of the Withings Body Scan.

The big addition this time is a built-in handle that’s attached to the scale using an extendable cord (something it shares with the Body Scan). This comes equipped with a set of electrodes that pair up with electrodes in the scale itself (making eight in total), and together these are used to measure your wellbeing across a range of metrics. This allows for more accurate data collection than simply gauging inputs from your feet.

Wyze says the handle provides “deeper, segmental insights and more accurate, personalized results” by allowing the scale to measure your arms, legs and torso individually. Instead of an overall idea of your health status, you get a more nuanced picture.

High-end health

Once all that data has been collected and quantified, you’ll be able to view your health insights using the scale’s 4.3-inch color display.

The device rounds up 13 different wellbeing metrics, including weight, body fat percentage, heart rate, lean body mass, and more. There are also ongoing trends to be found if you want to see how you’re doing over time.

And since the product comes with Bluetooth, you can sync all that data to your phone or other connected device and view it there, if you like. It’s compatible with popular fitness apps like Apple Health and Google Fit, and Wyze will send you a PDF report of your latest health metrics for easy consumption, too.

Wyze has priced the Scale Ultra BodyScan at $119.98 (around £90 / AU$185), which is significantly more than its other scales, including the $49.98 Scale Ultra and the $38.98 Scale X.

Still, with a more comprehensive feature set, it might make a run at a place on our list of the best smart scales before too long.

The Withings Body Scan sets a new benchmark for the capabilities of modern smart scales. It's both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, has a build quality and design that sets it apart from the pack, a clear and responsive display, and can provide more in-depth analysis of a user's body composition and physical well-being than its major competitors like Eufy, Wyze, Fitbit and Garmin. 

When used with the Withings Health Mate app, the Withings Body Scan can not only provide you with an analysis of your body composition, the ratio of fat-to-muscle-to-bone that makes up your body but also outline where your measurements sit in comparison to healthy averages. Using this information, it can identify trends in changes to your measurements over time, letting you know if you're gaining or losing weight and how you compare to averages for your age and gender.

For those needing specialized data readings – for example, if you are pregnant or an athlete – the Withings Body Scan can adapt its measurement methods accordingly, to ensure readings are as accurate as possible whilst remaining safe and impressively efficient for the user. In pregnancy mode, it'll tell you the approximate size and weight of your baby depending on how far along you are.

The Withings Body Scan's key drawback for most people will be the price tag. Sitting at nearly £200 more than the next-cheapest Withings smart scale, there aren't that many reasons to spend that much more on a scale. However, if you are looking to take a deep dive into your body composition, take steps to improve your long-term health and habits, or are a keen fitness enthusiast looking to get the most out of your workouts, the value-for-money will show itself in the long run.

As with all products that come from Withings, the Withings Body Scan is an undoubtedly stylish and robust device. You can get the Withings Body Scan in either a white or black color, both of which feature lighter banding across the scale which is used to send small electrical signals through your body to gather your body measurements. 

The Withings Body Scan features a 3.2-inch color LCD display, measures 12.8 inches in both length and width, and only comes 1.1 inches off the floor thanks to its extremely thin base pads which run along either side. These also help give the Body Scan a very sturdy feel across the base when taking measurements. The device also uses a tempered glass panel on the front of the scale, and weighs around 4.8kg overall, giving the device a premium feel despite the plastic used across the underside of the scale. 

Thanks to the tempered glass front, as well as the overall sturdiness of the build of the Withings Body Scan, the smart scale can handle weights up to 200kg / 440lbs / 31.5 stone, all while retaining the device's impressive 50g/0.1lb weight reading accuracy. 

Some of the key design features of the Withings Body Scan revolve around the handle which acts as one of the key improvements over other Withings body scales. The handle, and its on-scale holder, are made of the same plastic used across the rest of the device, and use a well-braided cable to attach one to the other. 

The handle and cable are light enough that you should experience no issues while holding them, whilst also not being so light that they feel cheap or underdeveloped. The electrodes on the handle are also usefully positioned to allow easy access for your thumbs on both sides.  

Given the importance of the handle to the improved metrics the Withings Body Scan can provide, these steps have been well considered, even to such an extent that, with your smart scale, you also receive a wall mount for your handle, which means should you struggle leaning down to reach it from the scale itself, you can simply mount it to the wall and use it from there. 

It should be noted, however, that should you choose to mount your handle to the wall, Withings asks that you set this up in the app to ensure the device still gives as accurate readings as possible. This is a simple enough process and takes a matter of seconds.

When testing the Withings Body Scan, the only two of the many measurements above that we struggled with were Pulse Wave Velocity and Vascular Age. These measurements required a slightly more specific positioning on the scale which proved tricky to master, and the scale required five complete readings before it could start giving you data, which resulted in a greatly reduced amount of data compared to other areas.

Getting all of this data is one thing, understanding it is another, and this is an area where, once again, Withings has hit the nail on the head through the Health Mate app. Through the app, not only are you able to turn on recommended zones and see average data and how you compare to the average in each measurement, but you can also find guides explaining what each measurement means, so if, say, you don't understand what vascular age means, you can find a guide explaining everything you need to know about where it should be, and how it can be improved. 

If you are working with a trainer or health professional, you're also in luck, as the app allows you to create a shareable report of your health that you can give to anyone who might benefit from it, a simple, but effective addition to the app.

Straight out of the box the simplicity and efficiency of Withings products is as present as ever. Setting up the device takes a matter of minutes through the Withings Health Mate app. If you are new to Withings and don't have an account, the setup of an account plus getting your Withings Body Scan ready takes a maximum of 15 minutes. 

In that time, you'll also be able to import health data from services such as Apple Health or Google Fit, as well as receive a full tutorial on how to properly use your new smart scale and set some goals in the app. 

There are a wide array of tutorials available on additional features within the app, some of which – the at-a-a-glance health improvement score and library of how-to workout/recipe/health management content – are unfortunately locked behind a Withings+ subscription.  This costs $9.95 / £9.95 / around AU$18 per month, but none of it affects the usage of the scale in any way – still, it'd be nice to have after spending this much on a smart scale. 

Once your Withings Body Scan is set up, utilizing it for not only your own, but your family's health is simple. The device can support up to eight profiles, which it can automatically detect. If however, a number of you are of similar weights, the device shows each profile as a list, which you scroll through by balancing on the foot of the direction you wish to scroll, so to go along the list, you simply need to put your weight on your right foot. 

The process of attaining your measurements takes around a minute, most of which is taken up by one of the unique features of the Withings Body Scan, the 6-lead ECG (echocardiogram). The ECG takes 30 seconds to complete and is one of the key benefactors of the Body Scan's unique handle. 

Each step of the measurement process is displayed for you on the 3.2-inch display, showing you the results of each test as they are collected, as well as some general daily info such as weather and air quality. You can customize the steps your Body Scan shows on the smart scale through the app, meaning if, understandably, you don't want to know the weather when you're weighing in, you can remove that from your slides. 

The display (and device) are noticeably responsive, and the bright LCD makes it easy to see everything you need as and when it comes up. Once you are finished, your results will already be waiting for you in your Withings Health Mate app, meaning it's quick and simple to access the more in-depth data with no waiting around. 

Overall, using the Withings Body Scan is extremely simple, everything you want to know can be seen on the smart scale itself during your weigh-in, and more detailed information can be found in the app once you are finished. The accuracy of measurements taken is extremely high, with weight having an accuracy of up to 50g/0.1lbs thanks to the four weight sensors spread across the scale, as well as featuring patented position detection technology and 'Position Control' technology. The Body Scan's segmental body composition capabilities are equally impressive thanks to the device's BIA (bio-electrical impedance analysis) multifrequency technology, which during testing was able to provide consistent results across five different bodily segments.

Wyze Scale X: One minute review

The Wyze Scale X is a great value addition to the best smart scales that combines the best of Wyze’s other offerings, the standard Wyze Scale and the Scale S. Small additions here make it useful in many different scenarios, such as providing modes for weighing babies, pets, and separate body composition modes for pregnant women and dedicated athletes. 

The scale was quick and easy to set up, and we were able to start using the scale straight away. The presentation of data was extremely accurate, matching the measurements of other smart scales we’d reviewed such as the Eufy P2 Pro, and historic data was viewable in-app and presented on handy graphs to help you plot changes more easily. 

The different metrics available were great and exactly what you’d expect from a premium scale, even one that cost half as much again. From bone mass to basal metabolic rate, you’re able to calculate everything here, and the companion all can even use your phone’s flash to check your pulse through your finger. 

The Scale X provides a full suite of wellness tools, and we were impressed with the breadth of metrics on offer to help provide a complete picture of health. 

Wyze Scale X: Price and availability

The Wyze Scale X is available on the Wyze store site for $33.99 in the US. That’s $10 more than the original Wyze Scale, but still far cheaper than many of its contemporaries and it’s very much their equal in quality. It comes equipped with four AAA batteries to set up and use the scale from the outset. Future batteries will, of course, need to be bought separately. 

Unfortunately, it becomes harder to find outside the US for as good value. Amazon and other third-party sites do stock the Wyze Scale X in Australia and UK stores, and will ship internationally, but it may not end up being anywhere near as good value. 

Wyze Scale X: Design

The Wyze Scale X has got a great look, albeit one comparable with many smart scales on the market right now. It’s essentially a piece of full-surface sensor glass divided into four quarters, with the Wyze logo at the bottom and an LED screen showcasing weight and other readouts in white light, with a durable plastic rear casing. 

One small innovation we like is that the feet aren’t simple rubber strips: they are separate plastic cases with built-in shock-absorbing cushioning that connects to the base of the unit, to prevent damage to the unit when stepped on repeatedly. 

The unit is only half the design situation, however: the Wyze companion app is simple to use and largely well-designed, allowing you to scroll through all 13 metrics with ease. However, there is one design feature we didn’t like: although all the metrics come with an explainer to give you some context, most are on a sliding scale, with some parts of the bar as seen below a solid green or a simple outline. 

This mono-color means you don’t get a clear indication of a “bad” reading over a “good” one, and the scale is vastly different between each metric. This makes the information hard to read correctly - is my bone mass too low? My Basal Metabolic Rate too high? Once I got my initial readings, I had to turn to Google for more information, a clear indication that I needed more in-app information here.

Wyze Scale X: Features

Like any smart scale, you step onto the Wyze Scale X and it shows you your weight. However, the additional 13 metrics the Wyze Scale X provides are body fat, muscle mass, body water, lean body mass, bone mass, protein, visceral fat, BMR, metabolic age, and muscle mass percentage. It's even able to take your pulse live.

By their very nature, these metrics are presented quite differently: some in terms of weight, others in percentages, others still in calories, metabolic years or even an unnamed index (for visceral fat) so, as mentioned above, they aren’t as intuitive as they might be. They’re lacking a unifying way to pull them all together, such as the Eufy scale’s digital avatar of a person, or Fitbit Premium’s translation of complex figures into simple health-related scores. 

Nonetheless, these are a great way to build up a complete picture of your health, and all of this data can be exported to Apple Health, Fitbit or Google Fit. This is the complete list of external health apps Wyze can interface with, so Samsung Health users and others are unfortunately out of luck, but the majority will be able to use one of the three if they want to move their health data elsewhere. 

The stats are gleaned by bioelectric impedance analysis, which sends an electrical current through your body in order to analyze its makeup. Electricity moves at different speeds through different materials: it would move through bone, for example, at a different rate than fat or muscle. This makes it a bit like electrical sonar, as it works to build up a picture of your health. 

But it’s not just your health: while you won’t be able to get the full spectrum of metrics, you can calculate the weight of babies, pets, and luggage using a specialist mode for each. Simply pick up the baby, cat, or suitcase of your choice, step onto the scale, and it will use your usual weight to calculate the difference.

Wyze Scale X: Performance

The scale was very simple to set up on my phone, and once I’d input my age, height and activity levels into the app, stepping on the scale promptly produced a reading in line with previous smart and analog scale readings. I’m satisfied as to its accuracy, as the baseline or more obvious stats such as weight, body fat percentage and BMI didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know. 

The only gripe I have at this stage is one I’ve shared above: the different scales the stats are based on and the lack of presentation involved. Swiping across my bone mass percentage, muscle mass percentage, and other stats, I came across ‘visceral fat’ and a flat number: six. 

The app helpfully includes an explainer that visceral fat is “a type of body fat stored within the abdominal cavity” and a bar with 12 written squarely in the middle. I assumed that lower is better and I’m six on the visceral fat scale, with 12 being either average or a ‘danger zone’ of sorts. However, I didn’t know what the scale really meant. Six what? Percent? Minutes? Years to live? 

A quick bit of googling shows this ‘visceral fat level’ is a range of numbers generated through body composition tests, and 1-12 is a healthy rating. However, I shouldn’t have to google this statistic to get the whole picture. Some of my scores were right on the extreme ends of the single progress bar the Wyze app uses for every metric, even though during my research, I was found to be perfectly within normal limits for each one. All the information recorded might be accurate, but Wyze could do with taking a good leaf out of Fitbit’s books when it comes to presenting this information in an accessible way. 

Otherwise, the scale performs as described. The information is crisp and shows up promptly on both the on-device readouts and the app, and repeated use allows graphs to develop to more easily show historical changes.

Two-minute review

The Eufy P2 Pro by smart home companion device producer Eufy is generally a very good smart scale option. Easy to set up and simple to operate, simply step onto the P2 Pro like a normal scale and the device can calculate more than your weight: by inputting your measurements into the app, the smart scale can help calculate muscle health, body mass index, body fat percentage, your basic metabolic rate, hydration and more.

Eufy might be better known for home security cameras and robotic vacuums, so a move into the health space seems out of character. But the scale is generally good: its attractive and understated to look at, all black glass and steel, and is able to be stored unobtrusively. 

Its app is simply designed and easy to use, even if using the included tape measure to input your vitals is a little awkward at first.  There are a few small issues keeping it back that I wish had been thought through more, including certain features that seem tailor-made to trigger anxiety and hamper inclusiveness. 

However, when dealing with a device that measures your body weight, it’s hard to create a kind, welcoming experience. Eufy is good at what it does, presenting its information in an easily accessible and informative way.

The scale’s design is a simple one: a black or white glass scale bisected twice into four quadrants, coupled with a bright and clear LED screen with simple digital readouts, again broken into four quadrants. The scale stands on four rubber feet to raise it off the ground. 

Rather than a rechargeable model, the P2 Pro operates on disposable batteries, the first set packaged with the product in a handled carry case. Also packaged with the product is a tape measure to calculate the size of your chest, arms, waist, hips and thighs. Once you have all these measurements, you put this information into the app alongside your height and weight and it generates a digital model of your proportions. 

I love the idea, but I can’t say I enjoyed the feature. It’s quite revealing, potentially even triggering for some, to toggle the information on the model and watch your digital avatar get fatter or thinner. There is a small selection of different skin tones as if a cursory bone was thrown to diversity, but that’s all the customization on offer.

Why not do a vitruvian-esque transparent figure, the way Garmin Connect does with its heat maps of the human body, and eliminate any issue with weight and identity? The app in itself, however, is well-designed, with all the information presented very clearly.

Speaking of the app’s design, once you step on the scale, the scale’s LCD screen presents you with weight, heart rate and body fat percentage, but the meat of the info is all in the app. It presents information on 16 different metrics: Heart rate, weight, body fat percentage, BMI, hydration, muscle mass, bone mass, basal metabolic rate, lean body mass, body age, body type, subcutaneous fat, body fat mass and cellular protein. 

It calculates all these, like most smart scales, through bioelectrical impedance analysis, or BIA: sending harmless electrical currents through your feet that take detailed readings of your body composition. 

All of these metrics are shown on scales of “low” to “high” and information is provided on what exactly each figure means, as well as tips to improve or maintain normal levels. You’re also able to set goals for overall weight and body composition, so you can measure your current stats and historic progress against these two goals. 

There are some neat additional modes available, including profiles specifically for pets and babies although this offers weight only rather than any additional functionalities. Having their own profile means that, with a swipe on the app, you can measure their weight and automatically plot it on a historical graph. Got a chonk of a cat who needs to slim down, or a rapidly-growing baby? You can simply pick them up and step on the scale. 

As well as viewing your history in-app, the app also allows you to export reports to view on your computer or print them off, or sync your data to Fitbit, Apple Health and Google Fit.  It also throws push notifications to your phone to encourage you to weigh yourself regularly. It honestly does everything you’d expect a smart scale to do, and more.

The Eufy smart scale was excellent in most respects. Set-up was easy, bar trying to get the right measurements around your bicep and chest for my digital avatar. Stepping on the scale once a day, I was able to plot a graph of my weight and view all my vital stats. It’s by far the best way to keep track of weight and other vitals, especially as you can export the information if you want to upload it elsewhere, such as Google Fit or an excel spreadsheet or something. 

The one outlying stat that seemed jarring was my “bone mass” readings, which said I was in the “low” category, while everything else was in green “normal” categories. As a 30-year-old man who regularly runs, lifts weights and eats pretty healthily, it’s unlikely I’m in this category: low bone mass, or osteopenia, tends to be a warning sign for those at risk of osteoporosis, such as seniors or perimenopausal women. However, never say never: I’m reviewing the Wyze Scale X next, and should the readings match or not, I’ll update this review with my findings. If both scales tell me I’ve got low bone mass, then I guess it’s off to the doctor. If the Wyze readings come back normal, then I’ll have a bone to pick with Eufy.

Other than worrying about the integrity of my skeleton, the one feature of the Eufy P2 Pro I really didn’t enjoy were the push notifications. Each morning I hadn’t stepped on the scale, I got a message from Eufy on my smartphone with “It’s time to get on the scale and weigh yourself!” It was presumably designed to sound cheery, but the exclamation point does make it vaguely threatening, like a health-conscious version of the Duolingo bird. 

Weight management is a difficult topic for many people. While studies say weighing yourself every day can lead to consistent weight loss, many have a tough relationship with the scale. Push notifications can be easily disabled, true, but encouraging daily use of the scale with a push to your smartphone as the default setting seems a tad irresponsible or insensitive, potentially leading to an unhealthy fixation on the numbers.

Smart scales are a useful tool in your fitness arsenal. They go far beyond your old-fashioned analog scale, providing a standard measurement of weight: these scales interface with your measurements on corresponding apps to offer your body mass index, percentage of fat, percentage of muscle and many more useful health metrics. 

The best smart scales do this fast and accurately, often interfacing with activity metrics from your fitness tracker or smart watch, especially if you find one that interfaces with the same fitness ecosystem as your wrist-mounted device, such as the Garmin Index S2 or Fitbit Aria Air. 

However, smart scales can do so much for you, that it’s important to know how to get the best out of them.

 Setting up your smart scale 

Unlike a normal scale, which just requires you to unbox it and away you go, smart scales demand a little bit more administration at first. Like other electric scales, they tend to run on either replaceable batteries or lithium rechargeable ones, like many other smart devices. 

Once the device is powered up, you’ll need to run through two extra steps: connecting the smart scale to your phone via Bluetooth, and downloading the corresponding app. 

The app itself will differ from device to device, but most apps, like the EufyLife app pictured which matches the Eufy P2 Pro, will at least require you to input your gender, age, and height so that your regularly updating weight can be taken into a slightly wider context. 

Most will be able to use this new information to calculate your BMI, which is a population-level aggregator and estimation of a healthy weight. However, some of the best smart scales do more: to set up the Eufy, for example, you can also input measurements of your chest, biceps, waist, hips and thighs, in order to create a virtual model of yourself in the accompanying app. 

This will allow the scale to more accurately calculate your fitness metrics, including your body composition. The best smart scales tell you your muscle, fat and bone percentages, illustrating whether they’re in or outside a healthy range for your age, height, weight and gender. 

 Using your smart scale 

On the surface, it’s as simple as using a normal scale: step on, and the scale will list off your weight in your chosen denomination (pounds or kilograms) in addition to other statistics on the on-device digital display.

However, the next step is to check your app, which should automatically update with your latest stats. Of course, your updated weight will then impact all the corresponding statistics such as BMI and body composition, depending on what particular statistics your chosen fitness tracker chooses. 

If you’re using a scale linked to your tracker, such as Fitbit Aria or Garmin Index S2, your Fitbit Premium or Garmin Connect account will update automatically with your new statistics. This means your weight, muscle and fat percentages, sleep, activity metrics and more are all in one place – it’s a great way to create a central hub for all your health data. 

Use your smart scale responsibly 

Weight, fat, and activity research, when taken too far, can be a minefield to navigate with our mental health intact. Because of this, it’s probably wise to use your smart scale as a regular check-in to ensure your health metrics are accurate, as it’s easy to become too obsessed with pounds and percentages. We've covered a little bit of this anxiety when talking about Strava and publishing your exercise statistics for everyone to see, but it can equally apply to the pressure you put on yourself.

Research from the University of Minnesota found that when it comes to self-weighing, “with regard to affect, self-esteem and body evaluation, and eating-related behaviors and cognitions, in total, most studies provided evidence of a harmful impact of self-weighing on these outcomes; fewer studies found a positive impact.” 

Numbers on the scale aren’t all that matters unless you’re an elite athlete. If you’re a casual fitness enthusiast and you’re eating healthily, drinking water and enjoying exercise on a regular basis, don’t be disheartened if the scale doesn’t show the result you wanted. 

Our health is not confined to our weight, any more than it's just about our muscles or mobility. Health is, at least in part, a physical condition and that means your whole body - all of you. A typical scale can't measure that, but Withing's wild, new Body Scan device, unveiled at CES 2022, can.

Withings Body Scan is a scale, but it's also a series of sensors embedded in the platform and a special, tethered bar that sits along the top edge of the scale. Weight measurement ends up being the least of what Body Scan can do. It's so advanced, in fact, that the device is not yet approved for use in the U.S. It's awaiting FDA approval.

Why all the caution? Perhaps it's because of how Body Scan works. To measure things like "segmental body composition," and even sweat gland activity, Body Scan sends a low level and what Withings promises is a "safe" electrical signal from the sensors in either the bar in your hands or the pad under your feet to almost instantly read things like impedance. That measurement can tell you a lot about what's going on in the body.

Withings claims it can learn things like fat mass distribution, water percentage, and muscle imbalances, which is why similar health measurement systems are so popular with sports professionals.

The sweat gland measurement in the feet allows Body Scan to track small nerve activity, which gives you a Sudomotor reading (autonomic nervous system control of sweat gland activity).

All the sensors also offer some of the more traditional biometric data, including heart rate, 6-lead ECG recordings to detect arrhythmia, and vascular age (arterial health) measurement. Withings claims Body Scan's algorithms can detect heart rhythm patterns associated with atrial fibrillation.

Body Scan includes a 3.2-inch color display where you can see most of these results, but the device also connects to the Withings App on iOS or Android where you can see it all in detail.

As noted above, Withings Body Scan is still awaiting FDA clearance, but they expect to start shipping it in the second half of 2022. Pricing has not been set.

Devices that can measure all sorts of health metrics are not unusual. We're certainly seeing many new wearables that can read everything from your stress levels to heart rate. However, a scale that also puts something in your hands to measure not just what it can glean from your wrists is something new. The level of detail - readings for individual body parts including your arms, legs, and torso - Body Scan can potentially track is also unprecedented.

It'll be interesting to see how Withings Body Scan makes it through the FDA approval process and how, ultimately, it measures up against all the new healthcare ware coming out of CES 2022.

The best smart scales overall

If you want to know more than what the bathroom scales say about your weight, the RunStar 8E SmartScan Pro is a great place to start. It tracks 28 metrics, with eight electrodes and a retractable handle providing a detailed breakdown of fat and muscle across five body zones. In testing, its readings were impressively close to those of the far pricier Withings Body Scan 2 (which you can read more about below in our 'best premium' category).

The easy-to-use app presents your results clearly and syncs with popular health platforms, including Apple Health and Google Health. Automatic user recognition also makes it handy for households sharing a set of scales, while USB-C charging means you can forget about stocking up on batteries.

There are a few corners cut to keep the price down. Our reviewer noted that the display feels a little cheap, and while the app does a good job of showing your stats, it won't offer much in the way of deeper analysis or coaching. There's no heart health tracking, either, so anyone after a more comprehensive health overview may want to look at pricier alternatives.

The best budget smart scales

We were blown away by the overall accuracy of the Vitafit Smart Bathroom Scales in our review, considering its incredibly cheap price tag. For a $20 smart scale, the Vitafit is very well built and sturdy, with a sleek design that will look right at home in your bathroom.

It's accompanying app is snappy and helpful, displaying lots of important information in the blink of an eye. Seamless connection is supplied by Bluetooth, and the app works on iPhone or Android.

It'll show you important metrics like weight, BMI, bone mass, basal metabolic rate, and more. It's got a generous weight limit of up to 180kg/400lb and support for limitless numbers of users. There's also functionality to weigh babies and children, so it makes a great scale for the whole family.

It's not perfect, and some of the body composition measurements lack the accuracy of more expensive alternatives, but at this price, it's hard to argue with as a budget pick.

The best premium smart scales

The Withings Body Scan 2 makes a standard weigh-in look rather basic, adding a wealth of body composition and cardiovascular health measurements. Building on its predecessor, it tracks more than 40 health biomarkers, including blood oxygen levels, hypertension risk and estimates of your heart and vascular age. Its six-zone body composition analysis also breaks down fat and muscle distribution, while Wi-Fi syncing sends results to the Withings app without you having to reach for your phone.

In testing, its core measurements were impressively accurate, and the reinforced aluminium build feels suitably premium for a scale costing a meaty $599.95/£449.95. However, not all its newer health estimates were as convincing. Vascular age readings varied noticeably over a couple of weeks, so these are best treated as indicators of broader trends rather than definitive health assessments.

It's a hefty investment, particularly when some features sit behind a Withings+ subscription. The RunStar 8E SmartScan Pro offers similarly strong body composition readings for considerably less, but the Body Scan 2 justifies its premium positioning with its additional cardiovascular health tracking and overall quality.

The best smart scales for fitness

The Withings Body Cardio is the company's most advanced smart scale. Not only does it give an accurate measurement of your weight, muscle mass, body fat and so on, it can also provide an indication of your overall cardiovascular health, and help you take action to improve it.

The scale can measure both standing heart rate and pulse wave velocity. A lower heart rate is generally a sign of better fitness, while pulse wave velocity indicates how flexible your arteries are. Stiffer arteries mean your heart has to work harder to pump blood around your body.

If that sounds confusing, don't worry – it's all clearly explained when your data is synced with the Withings Health Mate app (via either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi). together with practical advice to help you improve your readings.

This isn't a scale you'll want to be carrying often (it's much heavier than the others in this listing), but its two-layer design with no feet means it can be used on any type of floor. That's a real win if you want to weigh yourself in a carpeted bedroom – electric scales are usually only suitable for hard floors,

This is a premium scale, and has a price tag to match, but if you're interested in making long-term changes and improving your fitness rather than just losing weight, it could be well worth the investment.

The best smart scales for display quality

The Wyze BodyScan is proof that bathroom scales have come a long way from simply flashing up a number and calling it a day. It tracks 17 metrics, including body fat, muscle mass and body water, using eight electrodes and a handle that measures body composition across five zones. Its biggest selling point, though, is the generous 4.7-inch colour display, which shows seven measurements at a glance. No squinting at tiny numbers or immediately reaching for your phone to better see your stats in an app.

In testing, the Wyze delivered accurate readings for key measurements, including weight, BMI, body fat and muscle mass, with results that held up well against much pricier alternatives. Measurements were quick, and the scale syncs with Apple Health, Fitbit and Health Connect. Best of all, there's no subscription fee lurking around the corner to unlock your own data.

There are a few budget-friendly compromises. The handle feels a little flimsy, the app is fairly bare-bones, and some measurements, including body water and basal metabolic rate, were less convincing. It also runs on four AAA batteries rather than charging via USB-C, so keep a spare set handy.

Ultimately, the Wyze BodyScan makes a convincing case for spending less without settling for a tiny screen or limited measurements. If you want a clear view of your body composition stats without paying premium-scale prices, it's well worth a look.

The best Garmin smart scales

The Garmin Index S2 is another Wi-Fi-enabled body composition smart scale, that delivers accurate, consistent results. Its screen is particularly high resolution, which allows you to see detailed graphs of your weight over time.

Data from the scale syncs with the Garmin Connect app, which you'll already be familiar with if you own one of the company's running watches or fitness trackers, allowing you to see all your health data in one convenient place. Garmin Connect also synchronizes with a bevy of third-party fitness and diet apps, including MyFitnessPal, Nike+, and Noom to name just a few, so you don't have to enter data from your weigh-ins manually.

We'd appreciate a little more context around each of the metrics shown in the app (for example, it would be helpful to know whether your muscle mass is normal for your age and gender, and how close it is to the boundaries) but this is nevertheless a great smart scale if your budget will stretch to it.

The top smart scale for your needs is likely going to be the one that suits your lifestyle. Firstly, there are budget considerations to be made. However, most of the scales on this list can be picked up fairly cheaply, at least compared to other pieces of smart technology.

If you’re just looking for a simple body composition-measuring device that doesn’t cost the earth, you may want to check out the uncomplicated, relatively affordable Eufy Smart Scale C1 or Eufy P2 Pro, as both are very comprehensive and offer you great value for the price.

It’s also worth considering the tech you already own and factoring that into the decision you make. For example, if you’re already heavily invested in the Fitbit economy (i.e. you own one of our best Fitbits and you subscribe to Premium), you may want to pick up one of Fitbit’s Aria-branded scales, which can
upload your data automatically to your Fitbit app. On the other hand, if you already own one of our best Garmin watch picks, the Garmin Index S2 might be the only scale that makes sense for you, as it interfaces in a similar fashion with the Garmin Connect network.

Finally, you obviously want something that looks nice if you're going to be leaving it out to step on every day. Most of the above scales look sleek with their glass platforms, but some can be found in multiple colorways. All are pretty slender, so if you can't find one that fits your vibe, you can always tuck it in a cupboard out of the way when guests are over.

Why get a smart scale?

Measuring your weight can have a positive impact on your weight loss efforts. One study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found a daily weighing habit improved overall weight loss in overweight participants. Smart scales can take these measurements and automatically upload it to an app, so you can better keep track of your progress. Whether you're trying to build muscle, lose fat or simply stay a healthy weight, smart scales are a powerful tool.

However, for some people, weighing themselves too often can create a challenging relationship with their bodies, especially those who are just beginning a weight management journey. It could potentially lead to unhealthy habits and disordered behavior, so if you see the signs that you're weighing yourself compulsively or too often, don't be afraid to take a break from the scale.

Likewise, if you do have issues around your weight or numbers on a scale are particularly triggering for you, a smart scale may not be the best option to keep you healthy.

How we test smart scales

As you can see in the entries above, we test each smart scale comprehensively. We look at the design of the scale, and that’s not just about looks: we check out whether it’s difficult or easy to set up, how complicated it is to operate, and the design of the companion app if it has one.

We also examine its features, such as what metrics the scale gives you, how many of these are useful, and if the scale requires batteries to be replaced rather than recharged. Finally, we look at its performance, checking its accuracy against its competitors. Check out our how we test page for more.

Fitbit has registered a patent for a wearable device that can measure the health of your arteries, and pick up early signs of high blood pressure.

The patent listing (spotted by Gadgets & Wearables) was registered on December 4, is brief, but describes how a device like a wrist-worn fitness tracker could be used to measure the stiffness of your arteries non-invasively.

It wouldn't require an extra sensor; instead, it would use the optical heart rate sensor already included in all current Fitbit devices. This would detect changes in blood flow during exercise, which could then be analyzed to estimate pulse wave velocity – the rate at which waves of pressure move through your arteries.

If your pulse wave velocity is particularly fast, it's an indication that your arteries aren't as flexible as they should be, and therefore can't expand as blood is pumped from your heart. It also means higher blood pressure (or hypertension), which is a leading cause of heart disease and stroke.

This is the same tech used in the Withings Body Cardio, which we reviewed earlier this year and ranks highly in our guide to the best smart scales, as well as several Samsung Galaxy smartwatches.

Measuring pulse wave velocity is easier with a scale, since the person is standing still. A wearable has to factor in 'noise' caused by body movement tha could distort the readings, but although Fitbit has its own line of smart scales (the latest of which, the Aria Air, was released in 2019), the new patent relates specifically to wearable devices.

Since it doesn't require additional hardware, it's possible that pulse wave analysis could come to existing Fitbit devices in the form of a software update.

We wouldn't expect it for a while though; a patent registration isn't a guarantee that a feature will ultimately be released to market, and after development and testing, it need to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, as well as the relevant authorities in other countries where the device is sold. We'll keep you updated as soon as we know more. 

Analysis: early detection matters

Fitbits aren't medical devices, and the company makes it clear that they can't be used to diagnose or treat any illnesses, but they can still be useful for picking up early indications that something is amiss.

The Fitbit Sense and Charge 4 both have eletrocardiogram (ECG) sensors that can pick up signs of atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat) that should be investigated by a doctor, devices with SpO2 sensors can detect unusual drops in blood oxygen saturation overnight that might be a symptom of sleep apnea.

If you're worried, the app can take this data and turn it into a PDF report that you can share with a family member or doctor.

More recently, Fitbit has taken part in a study that suggests data from its fitness trackers could help identify early signs of Covid-19 infection before a person starts to show symptoms.

Hypertension is known as 'the silent killer' due to its lack of symptoms in its early, most treatable stages. Millions of people wear a Fitbit device every day to to monitor their daily steps and exercise habits; if that device could also pick up signs of high blood pressure, it has the potential to help save lives.

Anyone looking for a quick and easy way to monitor their weight will love the Renpho Smart Body Fat Scale. Not only does it make something of a style statement, this tempered glass and plastic smart scale is wonderfully accurate, allowing precise calibration in a couple of seconds and providing very accurate weight readings from there on. You’ll get pinpoint readings in increments of 0.2lb/0.05kg right up to a total 396lbs/180kg maximum weight capacity.

Renpho matches the precision of its digital scales with its app, which (once paired with the hardware via Bluetooth) can provide owners with up to 13 different measures.

Renpho has also designed everything so you can use it in tandem with the likes of Apple Health, Samsung Health, Google Fit and Fitbit too. It’s therefore a great option if you’re serious about monitoring your weight and everything that goes with it.

Price and release date

We tried the Renpho Smart Body Fat Scale in its Basic incarnation, the ES-CS20M-B, which features 3 AAA batteries and has a RRP of $27.99 on Amazon in the US or £37.99 on Amazon UK. That makes it one of the cheapest smart scales we've tested to date, around the same price as the Eufy Smart Scale C1 and Xiaomi Mi Body Composition Scale 2.

There’s also a lithium battery edition, the ES-30M. Both models come with a black finish. Alternatively, check out the ES-32MD model if you want the Renpho Smart Body Fat Scale in white.

Design

Bathroom scales have been around forever and, frequently, sit in a corner of the smallest room hidden from view and gathering dust. Not so the Renpho Smart Scale as it’s one of a new breed of bathroom scales that actually looks very cool.

The scale arrives in a pizza-shaped box containing the scale, three AAA batteries to power it and a very small, minimalist manual. Renpho advises that you download the supporting app where you can take a deeper dive into its innermost workings.

This is a smart scale that feels like a quality purchase, and comes finished in classic black. The platform is made of tempered glass with four metal circles embedded. These contain electrodes that gather your weight data when you’re standing on the unit. There’s a red LED display that shows your weight, while the batteries fit into a slot on the underside. Also underneath are four feet with moveable anti-slip rubberized pads so that it sits firmly on a hard surface.

Its dimensions are 28cm/11-inches by 2.54cm/1-inch, which is about standard for a smart scale. Overall the design looks great and the build quality suggests that the Renpho Smart Scale should last you a while, assuming you keep it plied with batteries.

It’s easy to pick up and put away, weighing in at 2.86lb/1.29kg, although if you’ve got a decent-sized bathroom the overall appearance is so good you may well want to leave it on display. While the scale itself is slick, stylish and minimalistic it’s the accompanying Renpho app, which connects via Bluetooth, where things get rather more interesting. Renpho has developed software that delivers a lot more than the dusty old scale you might be used to. It's nicely designed and proves to be the perfect accompaniment to the scale.

Performance

Renpho has created its app (available for iOS and Android) to let you get much more from your scale. For starters, it can work in tandem with Apple Health or Google Fit as well as Samsung Health and Fitbit. That’s great news if you’re serious about your health and fitness, while even if you only have a casual or passing interest in managing your weight these options do allow you much better monitoring of how things are looking.

Better still, the app lets you to do this over time too, so you can see the bigger picture. It makes a lot of sense. In fact, the app is quite good at drawing you in and taking more interest because of the fascinating insights it delivers.

For example, the Renpho app doesn't just give you your weight because on top of that it’ll also offer up information of 13 areas of your personal health. This includes body mass index (BMI), body fat, subcutaneous fat, visceral fat, body water, skeletal muscle, muscle mass, bone mass, protein, metabolic age, BMR (basal metabolic rate) and fat-free weight.

Making it more appealing is the ability to set goals and subsequently track your progress. This is invaluable if you’re looking to shed a little weight on a casual basis, or send a lot of it packing via a regime of regular workouts.

Another benefit of the Renpho app is that it’s possible to create different profiles, so that the scales will offer personalised data sets to whoever steps on it within your family circle. In the time we’ve been trying it the Renpho Smart Scale and app pairing has provided us with some really useful data, which obviously maps your progress from days into weeks and even years if you’re prepared to stick with it.

One point to note is that you may need to recalibrate the unit if it’s moved or turned upside down. This is easily done by stepping onto the scale with one foot and allowing it to reset itself.

Overall, we found the Renpho Smart Scale and app combination very impressive. We’ve also been impressed by the Athlete mode on the app, which delivers those more in-depth stats if you’re someone who exercises regularly.

MyKronoz MyScale one-minute review

Smart scales are everywhere, and the MyKronoz MyScale is among the best-looking, but do you need its bioelectrical impedance analysis?

As well as measuring your weight and calculating your body mass index (BMI) this Swiss-designed scale sends a mild electrical current through your body to measure resistance. It then gives you stats on your weight, body fat, muscle mass, bone mass and body water percentage. They’re just estimates, but they’re useful for an insight into your body’s composition.

The MyScale also collects something that most smart scales don’t – your heart rate – though we’re not sure why. After all, after you've walked over to your scale, it’s not going to be measuring your resting heart rate. Given that you can measure that more easily when using fitness trackers and smartwatches, we’re not convinced MyScale needs a heart rate sensor.

The MyScale is physically impressive, but not without flaws. Its attractive circular glass form comes with a hidden LED display that’s large and shows all the data you need in large colourful characters. However, it’s not as stable as it should be when placed on a flat surface and if you’ve got big feet then you’re probably going to obscure some of that large display with your toes.

However, with its sleek look and a mostly clean app the MyScale is a good, albeit expensive, first effort from MyKronoz.

The MyKronoz MyScale was released in April 2021, and costs $99.90 / £99.90 (about AU$140) direct from MyKronoz.

That puts it at the higher end of the price range for smart scales, sitting in between the Withings Body+ and the top-tier Garmin Index S2. Our current top-rated smart scale, the Xiaomi Mi Body Composition Scale 2, is a third of the price.

The MyScale has a sleek look. Fashioned from black or white tempered and mirrored glass, this circular scale looks the part in a bathroom. Designed to be used on hard floors, it measures 340 x 340 x 270mm and weighs 4.6lb/2.1kg. There are four spring-loaded sensors on the underside. The mirrored effect is nice, but the black version does collect a lot of smudges, so plan on giving it a polish now and then.

Unlike most smart scales, which for some reason tend to be battery-powered, the MyScale recharges via USB-C (there’s a slot nestled into a recess on the underside). However, with a 3,000 mAh battery inside there shouldn’t be much need to recharge it. MyKronoz says they’ll last about a year, though obviously that depends on just how obsessed you get with your weight, BMI and fat/muscle/bone/water mass.

The MyScale supports up to eight different user profiles, with the AI detecting which person is standing on the scale. You’ll know if it’s got that correct or not because the user’s alias – a six-character name assigned to each user via the app – is displayed just after their weight is measured.

We’re not convinced MyScale needs a heart rate sensor. Not only do many fitness trackers and smartwatches now offer the same thing, but having walked to the scales it’s likely that your heart rate is slightly raised. Ours definitely was, with readings consistently higher than our resting heart rate. It’s consequently not a useful measurement.

The MyScale isn’t as rock solid as it should be. Put one foot on it and it not only rattles but feels unsteady, as it’s going to tip over. However, once on its platform an impressive performance unfolds.

The MyScale gets to work quickly, measuring weight and colorfully displaying it, with red or green arrows indicating whether you’ve lost or gained weight since your last weigh-in. You then see a calculation of your BMI. After a short beep that confirms that your body composition stats have been compiled, you see readouts of your body fat, muscle mass, bone mass and body water percentage.

Unlike some smart scales, this one also has a heart rate monitor built-in. Another beep confirms that your heart rate has been read, after which it's displayed. Then you get a very basic weather forecast (a graphic of a sun/cloud plus a temperature). It then visually syncs the new data with your account in the cloud, and within a few seconds a notification appears on your phone.

The LED display uses large pixels, mostly while but sometimes blue, yellow or red. Trouble is, the display is so large that the readouts will be covered by your toes if you have big feet. We physically had to widen our stance to read the display properly.

MyScale doesn’t work well without the MyKronoz app largely because to calculate BMI it needs to know height, which is collected – along with age – from a series of in-app prompts that set-up MyScale. MyScale uses Wi-Fi to sync your data with the cloud (as well as to fetch the weather forecast) so you need to input your Wi-Fi network details. 

A dashboard page on the app contains all the essential details, with current weight and target weight up top, and body composition stats displayed below alongside icons. It saves all these measurements on a ‘history’ page, which you can see as a list or inspect by month and date. 

You can also use the MyKronoz app to customize exactly what measurements you want to be shown on the MyScale’s LED display during each weigh-in. 

It can send data for all or some of four metrics – weight, body fat, BMI and heart rate – to Apple Health and Google Fit. There’s a page in the app where you can tell it exactly what to upload and what not to (for example, if you have a smartwatch then you will probably have a more useful heart rate sensor already).

The best smart scales shouldn’t be complicated. However smart it seems on paper, the Mi Body Composition Scale 2 from Chinese brand Xiaomi is all about minimalism. It doesn’t look much and, to the lay user, nor does it do much. In fact, unless you’ve downloaded Xiaomi’s Mi Fit app, you could be forgiven for thinking that the Mi Body Composition Scale 2 is just a digital scale of the kind that has been around for decades. 

However, there’s a lot going on under its tempered glass hood. Not to be confused with the simpler Xiaomi Mi Smart Scale 2, the Mi Body Composition Scale 2 uses bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) to present you with data on your weight, muscle mass, BMI, bone mass, body fat, visceral fat, basal metabolism, water and an overall ‘body score’.

The Mi Fit app deals with all that, presenting easy to read scores and charts, but you don’t have to get involved in any of that. The beauty of the Mi Body Composition Scale 2 is that you can just step on it, see your current weight, and get on with your day. All that’s missing is a heart-rate sensor, but then you’ve probably got a heart rate monitor, fitness tracker or a smartwatch for that.

Price and release date

Originally launched by Xiaomi in 2020, the Xiaomi Mi Body Composition Scale 2 is a follow-up to the original Mi Body Composition Scale from 2018. It’s available from the Mi website for £24.99 (about $35 / AU$50), and at a lower price from third-party retailers.

Be sure to look for the Xiaomi Mi Body Composition Scale 2 (model number 2XMTZC05HM) and not the Xiaomi Mi Smart Scale 2, which is a slightly different product.

The Mi Body Composition Scale 2 is all about minimalism. Covered in reinforced glass, its 300 x 300 x 25mm chassis has rounded corners and is shiny, but doesn’t attract fingerprints. Its sensible, simple design continues with a large – but not massive – LED display up the top that displays your weight, and only your weight, in white characters. When it’s not doing that, it’s completely invisible. In the centre of the product is a ‘Mi’ logo, and at each corner are steel sensors.

The scale communicates with a smartphone via Bluetooth 5.0 and is powered by four AAA batteries, which are included in the box alongside an instruction manual in Chinese characters. We would have preferred a built-in battery, though Xiaomi suggests they’ll power the Mi Body Composition Scale 2 for about 12 months.

Performance

• Well weighted and steady
• High-precision pressure sensors
• Measures your balance, but not heart rate

The Mi Body Composition Scale 2 is all about its high-precision pressure sensors. Step on to them and your weight is shown within a second, and if you try to weigh yourself a few minutes later you’ll get exactly the same weight. 

Crucially, the Mi Body Composition Scale 2 doesn’t move when you put one foot on it, unlike some much smarter scales that overlook the basics. However, you do need to remove your socks to get anything other than your weight; the scale needs skin contact to get body composition data.

You can also get a score of your balance by standing on the scale on one leg for a few seconds.

What it does lack is Wi-Fi, but that's less of an issue than it might sound. A lot of bathrooms suffer from a weak wireless signal (after all, no one ever puts a router router by the toilet), so the Mi Body Composition Scale 2 using Bluetooth to communicate with a smartphone makes a lot of sense.

Though you can just use the Mi Smart Scale 2 as a digital scale that displays your weight, there’s a lot more going on under the hood that is only revealed if you use it to funnel data into the Mi Fit app. Each time you weigh yourself, it takes a host of measurements and sends it all to the Mi Fit app via Bluetooth, which then uploads it all to the cloud. It then syncs with Apple Health, Google Fit and Samsung Health.

Although the Mi Fit app also includes things like walks, runs, calories used etc, you can just use it to track your weight. There’s plenty of bioelectrical impedance analysis here, including body fat, muscle, protein, water, bone mass, visceral fat and a score for your basal metabolic rate (the number of calories required to keep your body functioning at rest).

It also offers your body age and your ideal weight (based on your height, age and BMI, “so you don’t have to lose weight recklessly and become excessively thin for the sake of aesthetics” according to Xiaomi. To get that kind of analysis you must tell the app your gender, date of birth and height.

The Eufy Smart Scale C1 is one of the most affordable smart scales you can buy right now – and in our tests, we found it was also the best. This stylish little scale delivers truly impressive specs for the price, which gave it the edge over bigger names like Garmin and Fitbit, earning its place as the best smart scale of 2021.

Eufy is well known for its smart home devices, including vacuum cleaners and robot vacuums, as well some of the best video doorbells – but even if you don't recognize the name, you probably know its parent company Anker, which makes some of our top-ranking wireless headphones and speakers. You'd expect its smart scales to be among the best too – and you'd be right.

Smart and simple

Some smart scales are a hassle to set up, requiring a complex registration process and multiple passwords – but not this one. In fact, we were amazed how quickly it was ready for us to step on and start measuring our weight. You'll need to download the appropriate smartphone app and make a user account, but this takes just a few moments, and once it's done the scale will be detected and connect to your phone via Bluetooth almost instantly.

The scale will recognize you automatically as soon as you step aboard, and your name will be displayed on the bright LED display, which is easy to read while you're standing. There's no Wi-Fi connectivity, but don't worry; the scale can store up to 100 weight readings, and will sync them for you when your phone is within Bluetooth range.

The Eufy Smart Scale C1 supports up to 16 users, which is unusual (most smart scales max out at eight), and means it's suitable for a big household, or even a sports team.

Eufy's app is thoughtfully designed too. The scale uses the EufyLife app rather than EufyHome, which is for smart home devices like robot vacuums, but you can use the same account login details for both. All your data is clearly presented, with your current weight on the home screen and more detailed body composition stats in a series of tiles.

Each tile is color-coded to show whether your stats are high, normal. or low, and tapping them reveals extra information about what the data actually means – something not all smart scale apps provide.

We found that the measurements from the Eufy scale almost exactly matched those from the body composition scale in our gym. Both these scales use bioelectric impedance to estimate the mass of lean tissue and fat in your body. This isn't as accurate as a DEXA scan, for example, but can be useful for tracking changes over time. 

Weighing up the competition

Despite all this, the Eufy Smart Scale C1 is one of the most affordable smart scales around, costing just $35.99 / £35.99 (about AU$50) – and can often be found for even less at retailers like Amazon.

If you own a Garmin or Fitbit device, you might prefer to stick with a scale like the Garmin Index S2 or Fitbit Aria Air, which will import your weight and body composition into the appropriate mobile app automatically. However, typing in the figures yourself doesn't take long, and for such a big saving, you might decide it's worth the extra effort.

Two-minute review

Before you invest in the Fitbit Aria Air, you should know that unlike other Fitbit smart scales, it doesn’t use a small electrical current to estimate your body composition (including far, muscle and bone mass) – a method known as bioimpedence. This means you’ll get a less complete picture of changes to your body, but means it’s safe for people with implanted devices such as pacemakers.

Instead, the Fitbit Aria Air measures weight (in imperial or metric units), and calculates your BMI using the height entered when you created your Fitbit account. This is synced immediately with the Fitbit mobile app, where you can track changes over time and see how close you are to meeting your target weight. It also makes it easy to see how any lifestyle changes, such as increased exercise or improved sleep patterns, may have affected your weight.

The Fitbit Aria Air connects to your phone via Bluetooth, and has no Wi-Fi connectivity. This means it’s very quick and easy to set up, with no need to enter the password for your home network, but your phone will need to be within Bluetooth range for your data to sync.

If you own a Fitbit smartwatch or fitness tracker, and aren’t particularly interested in the details of your body composition, then the Fitbit Aria Air is a good choice. It’s solidly built and easy to use, making it easy to get into the routing of weighing yourself regularly.

However, it’s not your only option. There are third-party scales (such as the Eufy Smart Scale C1) that are also excellent, and sync data with the Fitbit app as well. The setup isn’t quite as straightforward, as you’ll need to connect Eufy and Fitbit apps together, but if you’re on a budget then it’s a cheaper option well worth considering.

Price and release date

The Fitbit Aria Air was released in December 2019, and costs $49.95 / £49.99 / AU$99.95 direct from Fitbit.

For context, that's roughly the same as the FitTrack Dara (a Bluetooth-only body composition smart scale) and around twice the price of the Wi-Fi-enabled Withings Body+ body composition scale.

Design

The Fitbit Aria Air is available in black and white, and like almost all smart scales, has a platform topped with toughened glass. In our tests, this seemed particularly prone to fingerprints. It’s water-resistant, so you can wipe it with a dry towel if it gets wet in the bathroom, but we found marks were stubborn even when rubbed with a microfiber cloth.

It takes three AAA batteries, which are supplied. Its platform is large for a smart scale, measuring 12.8 x 12.8in (slightly bigger than the Withings Body+), Unlike some other scales, there are no marking to show the best place to position your feet, but as the scale doesn’t use bioimpedence, this shouldn’t be a problem.

We were surprised how heavy the Fitbit Aria Air was. It weighs 3.9lb (1.7kg), which isn’t much less than Wi-Fi scales like the Garmin Index S2, and much less than the Eufy Smart Scale C1 Bluetooth scale. Fitbit advises always storing the scale upright, so you’re unlikely to be moving it often, but it’s something to bear in mind if space in your bathroom is limited.

User experience

Because the scale doesn't track body composition, it's unable to identify you unless your phone is within Bluetooth range. Step aboard without a connection and you'll see your weight, but your data won't be synced. It's not stored on the scale itself, as there would be no way to pin it to a particular user.

This could be inconvenient if you're not in the habit of taking your phone into the bathroom in the morning, but does mean there's no limit to the number of people who can use the scale. Most smart scales only support between four and 16 users, but the Aria Air has no such cap, provided each person has a Fitbit account.

Weight is shown on the bright LED display as soon as you step on, and provided you have the Fitbit app open on your phone, it will appear there straight away. Unlike Salter's Bluetooth smart scales, there's no need to tap a button to initiate the syncing progress. 

The Fitbit app will show changes to your weight and BMI over time (though it's a shame the same data isn't displayed on the scale's screen as well). Usefully, the app also shows 'idea' weight and BMI ranges, which adds useful context to the data, and is something missing from many smart scale apps.

The data presented was consistent across multiple weigh-ins (though Fitbit advises that you may need to weigh yourself a couple of times if you've moved the scale since it was last used), and lined up with that from the professional scale at our gym. As with any scale though, it's recommended to use the Fitbit Aria Air on a hard floor for the most accurate readings.

It's also worth noting that Fitbit adds new features to its smartphone app regularly, so it's possible that new tools that use your bodyweight or BMI might be developed in the future. This firmware update makes this data even more accessible, putting the cardiovascular health measurement into simple terms that are easier to understand rather than giving raw numbers.

It won't be for everyone (if you need a budget smart scale then the simpler Eufy Smart Scale C1 or FitTrack Dara will fit the bill better), but if you're interested in more than just weight loss this new feature makes the Withings Body Cardio easy to recommend.

The Eufy Smart Scale C1 is just £29.99 at Currys right now, a saving of 37% off the recommended retail price. That means it's not just the best smart scale around, but also one of the cheapest.

The scale uses bioelectrical impedance to calculate your body composition, including fat mass, muscle, bone and water. In a nutshell, different tissues provide different amounts of resistance, and using a very small current, it's possible to calculate the percentage of each type in your body.

When we tested the Eufy Smart Scale C1, we were impressed by how quick and easy it was to set up and use, particularly compared to rival scales from the likes of Withings and Salter. Just install the app on your smartphone, enter your height, name and gender, and you're ready to get started. 

It connects to your phone via Bluetooth, so there's no need to spend time typing in your Wi-Fi password and hooking it up to your home network.

In our tests, the results were consistent and surprisingly accurate, almost exactly in line with measurements from the premium body composition scales at our gym.

Eufy's app is simple and intuitive to use as well. All your stats are clearly presented, with graphs to illustrate your progress, and there's plenty of information and advice to help you understand each metric.

Two-minute review

The Withings Body+ is a body composition smart scale that gives you the best of all worlds. It's affordable (much more so than the top-end Withings Body Cardio), it has both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity (whereas the Withings Weight & Body BMI scale just has Bluetooth), and it gives you accurate, consistent readings synced with an excellent, user-friendly app.

It's a particularly good smart scale for families, with support for up to eight users, each of whom is recognized automatically. There's a large non-slip platform with live guidance to help you stand in the right position, and the display is bright and clear. 

Data syncs with the Withings Health Mate automatically with no extra input, and can be pooled together with information from apps like Google Fit, Apple Health and MyFitnessPal so you can see all your health and activity metrics in one place.

It's not just numbers either; the app also provides expert advice to help you understand what it all means in practical terms, and guide you towards healthier lifestyle choices (not only weight loss).

If you're on a tight budget then a Bluetooth-only scale like the Eufy Smart Scale C1 might be a better choice, but you'll be hard pressed to find a better smart scale with Wi-Fi connectivity. 

Price and release date

The Withings Body+ was released in 2017 and costs $99.95 / £74.96 / AU$179, putting in the middle of the company's range of smart scales.

Design

The Withings Body+ has a toughened glass platform, with marking to help you position your feet correctly. If you're not in quite the right place, arrows on the scale's display will guide you into the optimal position. As with Withings' other scales, the platform is quite large, measuring 12.8 x 12.8in and the bright display measures 2.4 x1.6in.

Unlike the Withings Body Cardio, the Body+ scale has conventional feet underneath, with a textured non-slip surface to avoid marking your floors. Like the vast majority of electric scales it's only suitable for use on hard floor, but carpeted bathrooms are a rarity so that's unlikely to present an issue.

The scale takes three AAA batteries (included) and comes with a two-year warranty. Withings also offers a 30-day returns policy if you're not happy.

User experience

Install the Withings Health Mate app (available for iPhone and Android devices) and create an account, then turn on the scale and follow the in-app instructions to connect it via Bluetooth. Once that's done, you'll be prompted to add the scale to your home Wi-Fi network. This isn't an essential step, but means the scale can sync your data when your phone is out of range.

When we tested the scale, there was no need to carry out a firmware update, but the Wi-Fi connectivity means it would be possible to receive any important feature upgrades or safety patches in the future.

Once that's done, select the data you'd like to see each time you weigh in, which can include weight, body fat, muscle, water, steps (synced from third-party apps like Google Fit or Apple Health) and even the weather.

You're then ready to step on. Your weight will be shown almost instantly, and after a couple of seconds the scale will cycle through your elected stats. There’s no need to select a user ID before weighing; the scale will recognize you based on your body composition, and your name will appear on the display to confirm this.

Body composition data is synced to the app automatically, and will appear on the app's homescreen with options to drill down for further information. More on that in a moment.

In our tests, data was consistent throughout multiple weigh-ins, and matched that taken by other Withings scales (including the top-end Withings Body Cardio). There were no unexpected peaks or troughs, which we've experienced with some of the cheaper smart scales we've tested, and composition scores were in line with those from the scales at our gym.

The scale supports up to eight users, making it a good choice for large households (the Body Cardio only supports four), and the display is bright and easy to read. All different stats are presented clearly, with icons where appropriate (steps are represented by footprints, for example), which is a thoughtful addition.

Companion app

The Withings Health Mate app is one of the best we've seen for syncing, managing and tracking data from a smart scale. Your current weight is shown clearly on the app’s homescreen, along with a chart of your last seven weigh-ins so you can easily track trends. You’ll also be able to see your current step count at a glance, and stats for recent workouts.

Workout and step data is gathered by third-party apps like Apple Health or Google Fit, and seamlessly imported.

To see your detailed body composition data, tap the ‘Dashboard’ link. Details from your last weigh-in are presented, along with an arrow to show whether the general trend for each metric is up, down, or stable. It’s well designed, and a handy way of checking progress without delving deeper into the numbers if you’re in a hurry.

You’ll see Health Insights in the Withings Health app, letting you know if you should make any changes to your goals (if they appear too high or too low), or if you’re on the right track. You can tap on these for advice from health experts. Alternatively, you can choose to unsubscribe if you’d rather focus on the numbers.

Tapping on any measurement will reveal a more detailed chart of your changing body composition over time. Tap any of these charts for detailed insight into what that particular metric means, why you should measure it, and how it’s calculated by the scale and app. There’s a lot more information than you’ll find in most fitness apps, and it’s presented in plain English, which adds important context to the raw figures.

A blue band on each chart that represents the recommended ranges defined by the World Health Organization, so you can see where your numbers fit, but you can choose to turn this feature off if you prefer (which you might choose to do if you’re a bodybuilder or athlete, for example).

The app also provides advice on when and how to weigh yourself (ideally at the same time each day, 30 minutes after waking up, and just once or twice a week).

You can choose to log your heart rate, blood pressure and food intake as well. The only omission we can see is a lack of tools for logging your menstrual cycle, which can have a noticeable effect on water retention and therefore overall weight during the course of the month.

There’s more to health than just weight, and the Withings Body Cardio smart scale is designed to help you track improvements in your cardiovascular fitness over time, as well as your body composition.

Like most smart scales, the Body Cardio uses bioelectrical impedance to measure the mass of different tissue types, including bone, muscle and fat. That's not all, though; it also measures your heart rate and pulse wave velocity, which can be good indicators of your overall wellbeing.

A lower heart rate is typically an indicator of better fitness, so if you see that your numbers are trending down, it's a good sign that you're on the right track. Pulse wave velocity, meanwhile, indicates how flexible your arteries are (we'll go into the details below). Stiffer arteries mean your heart has to work harder to pump blood around your body.

All this data is synced wirelessly to the Withings Health Mate app on your phone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, where it's visible alongside workout data and step counts gathered by third-party apps like Google Fit, Samsung Health, and Apple Health.

In addition to aggregating all this data, the app also gives you an in-depth explanation of what it all means, and provides helpful suggestions for lifestyle changes you can make to improve your numbers.

It's a well designed package that will serve you well if you're interested in not just losing weight, but improving your overall fitness. The Body Cardio scale is quite expensive though, costing twice as much as smart scales that only monitor body composition.

Design

Like most smart scales, the Withings Body Cardio has a glass platform that provides a robust non-slip surface to stand on. 

There are no feet underneath; instead, the scale has a type of two-layer design with a flat aluminum base that Withings says makes it "the thinnest, most stable scale on the market", and means it's suitable for use on all floors, including carpet. It's a novel design, but one that makes it noticeably heavier than other smart scales at 2.6kg.

If you need a scale to travel with you might be better off with something like the FitTrack Dara, which is more compact and weighs just 1.4kg.

Whereas most smart scales use three or four AA batteries, the Body Cardio scale is charged via a micro USB port on the side. Charging progress is displayed on the screen once it’s plugged in. It's an unusual choice, but one that we appreciate due to the reduction in waste from old batteries.

We also like the positioning of the power button on the side of the scale rather than the base; particularly since the scale is quite weighty. Once the scale is charged and you’ve installed the smartphone app, hold this button for three seconds and you’re ready to get started.

The display is quite large, measuring 2.4 x 1.6in, and makes good use of graphics to represent complex information.

User experience

Pairing your with Withings Body Cardio scale with your phone is a simple process using the Health Mate app. You'll first be prompted to connect the two via Bluetooth, after which you'll be given the option of connecting the scale to your Wi-Fi network as well. This isn't mandatory, but is recommended so your data can sync when your phone isn’t within range.

Once that's done, you can choose which stats to see on the scale each time you weigh in, including weight, body composition (muscle mass, water, fat etc), weather, and heart rate and pulse wave velocity.
