Italy showed plenty of fight in their Six Nations opener but were ultimately well-beaten by Scotland at Murrayfield. Five years since Scotland last finished in the top three of the Six Nations, Gregor Townsend's men look set to wrap up their championship in style at Murrayfield. They take on Italy in the first game of Super Saturday, knowing that victory would almost certainly secure third place.

The Azzurri, however, have plenty of motivation of their own. Having pushed both Ireland and France hard, ill discipline proved their undoing in the two games they actually stood a decent chance of winning, and so it is that they enter the final weekend of the competition at the bottom of the standings and without a victory to their name.

If that's to change in Edinburgh, they surely can't afford to go down to 14 men for 10 minutes, let alone 20, as they did against both England and Wales. The 17-29 defeat last weekend would have stung Kieran Crowley more than the three previous reverses, because even with 14 men on the field they were the better team – they just didn't take their chances. 

The absence of Ange Capuozzo was keenly felt, especially at the back, but if anyone's capable of filling his shoes it's Tommaso Allan. That means Paolo Garbisi remains at fly-half, though Crowley has mixed things up elsewhere, handing Alessandro Fusco his first start of the championship at scrum-half, and naming debutant Simone Gesi at left-wing.

Scotland are without injured trio Finn Russell, Stuart Hogg and Richie Gray. Blair Kinghorn starting at fly-half lends a slight throwback feel to the team, while Ollie Smith replaces Hogg, Sam Skinner comes in at lock, and Hamish Watson starts at openside flanker, with skipper Jamie Ritchie switching to the blindside at the expense of Matt Fagerson.

France's chances of retaining the Six Nations trophy are extremely slim, but all they can do is take care of business and hope against hope for a gift from the rugby gods. Les Bleus host Wales in the second game of Super Saturday and, regardless of the big picture, Fabien Galthie's men will be keen to put on a show in their final competitive game at the Stade de France ahead of their home World Cup.

Uini Atonio slots straight back into the France XV upon his return from suspension, coming in for Dorian Aldegheri, while Romain Taofifenua has been brought in to deputise for the injured Paul Willemse.

Having already passed one Six Nations "decider" with flying colours, Ireland are braced for another serious test of their championship credentials today as they face Scotland in what could well be a classic encounter at Murrayfield.

It doesn't get much better than England vs France in a must-win game for both teams, and a pair of major personnel changes have cranked the intrigue levels up to 11. Andy Farrell has given James Ryan the armband and Ross Byrne the No.10 jersey, as Ireland look to continue their march to the Grand Slam that many believe is now theirs to lose. Bundee Aki has been handed his first start of the Championship at inside centre, while Dan Sheehan is back in the squad as an option off the bench.

Stuart McCloskey, initially named on the bench after starting Ireland's first two games, has been parachuted in as a late replacement for Garry Ringrose, who was supposed to start but has picked up a calf issue.

The combination of Wales and Warren Gatland is one that most Scots would probably rather not think about. In 11 previous outings, Gatland has never lost a game against Scotland, while for two championships running, Wales have managed to burst Gregor Townsend's balloon just as it had looked set to soar. Going with experience resulted in a 10-34 trouncing at the hands of an admittedly outstanding Ireland team, and Gatland has responded by swinging the opposite way, making six changes in total. Dafydd Jenkins and Christ Tshiunza have been handed their first starts for the national team. They're joined by Tommy Reffell in a reshuffled back row. 

Meanwhile, former skippers Alun Wyn Jones and Justin Tipuric aren't even in the squad, and fellow old head Taulupe Faletau drops to the bench.

Prop Marco Riccioni is in for Simone Ferrari.

If there's one Six Nations match you need to watch this weekend, it's Ireland vs France. A clash between the No.1 team in the world rankings and the No.2-ranked reigning champions, a fixture with 114 years of history behind it. Dan Sheehan, however, has joined Tadhg Furlong, Jamison Gibson-Park and Cian Healy on the sidelines, with Rob Herring stepping in at hooker. Scrum-half Conor Murray is still set to start, despite his father being involved in a serious road collision in the week. 

France's victory over Italy was a record-setting 14th in a row, though 29-24 was much, much closer than even the most optimistic Italian fans would have anticipated. Discipline was an issue for Les Bleus throughout, but Galthié has stuck with the same XV today, which means there's still no sign of the injured trio Cameron Woki, Jonathan Danty and Gabin Villière.

Reigning champions France face the team that's had to prop up the Six Nations standings for seven tournaments running today, but things look a little different for Italy this time around.
