Charley Hull catapulted herself into contention with a 66, which took her from level-par to 6-under, one behind Andrea Lee and keeping pace with Minami Katsu, Megan Khang and Rio Takeda. Hull isn't the biggest fan of links courses, but the $9.5 million, $1,425,000 of which is earmarked for the winner, isn't a bad incentive.

She's not in the top 10, but we wouldn't rule Lottie Woad (3-under) out yet. The 21-year-old, who only turned professional two weeks ago, had been a whisker off becoming the first amateur to win a major since 1972, to which she responded by winning her first ever tournament as a pro.

The young Swedish superstar Ludvig Aberg made the biggest move on Saturday, carding a 69 to sit six shots off leader McIlroy, while Patrick Reed also put himself back into contention. Shane Lowry bogeyed late on on Saturday but has the game to post a good score around Augusta, but world number one Scottie Scheffler again struggled.

This year's event could see a repeat of last year's playoff tussle between eventual champ Sam Burns and Scottie Scheffler, with both man back to battle it out on the Fort Worth course.

Scheffler leads the betting for this year's event with the bookies, ahead of Jordan Spieth.  

The packed field also includes Viktor Hovland, Tony Finau, Sungjae Im, and Tommy Fleetwood, alongside former champions Zach Johnson, Justin Rose, and Kevin Kisner.

Meanwhile, the top 60 pros (plus ties) will make the cut in the individual competition. The first three rounds will be played at Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course and Monterey Peninsula Country Club Shore Course, with Pebble Beach hosting the finale.

The celebrity element is, of course, the event's main calling card, but the enduring image from last year's tournament is that of Spieth hastily retreating from the very edge of a cliff above Stillwater Cove – all just to avoid taking a drop shot. The Austin Country Club hosts the World Golf Match Play for the sixth year in a row this week with Billy Horschel looking to defend his title and a $12 million purse up for grabs. The most common for top-tier stars is through exemption. The top 50 players on the current Golf World Rankings all go through in this way, as do the top 10 players from the previous British Open Championship. All players who have won one of the other three majors in the previous five years also get an exemption, as do the top 30 players from previous year’s PGA Tour money list and those on the European Order of Merit. Finally, all previous Open Champions under the age of 60 also get an exemption.

Players that don’t make the exemption criteria can get an invite via the Open Qualifying Series (OQS), and also via local qualifying. Finally, if the field size has not reached 156, players that have the highest rating in the official golf rankings that haven’t already qualified will get the nod.

2020/21 PGA Tour season: highlights so far

The new PGA Tour season has gotten off to a spectacular start, headlined of course by Bryson DeChambeau's dominant win at the US Open back in September and then Dustin Johnson's maiden Augusta victory in November.
