What is the Queen Stage?

The Queen Stage of the Tour de France refers to the most challenging leg of the three-week race — typically the one with the most brutal climbs and highest elevation gain.

This stage is usually held in the French Alps and is designed to push the riders to their absolute limits. For this year's race, Stage 18 holds that honour, featuring three hors catégorie (beyond category) climbs and a staggering vertical gain of 5,450 metres.

The Stage concludes at the summit of the Col de la Loze, a climb that became iconic in 2023 for the scene of Tadej Pogacar's "I'm gone, I'm dead" moment when Jonas Vingegaard cracked him in the race for the Yellow Jersey.

Visma–Lease a Bike appear to be preparing a number of their riders to feature in the breakaway once we reach the intermediate sprint. Many of them are featuring in the top 15-20 riders so far.

136km to go — Wellens leading

Not too much action so far. Tim Wellens (Team UAE) leads the race and Wout van Aert (Visma) has now made it across with Kaden Groves and a few others.

We are almost at the first big climb of the day — the Col du Glandon.

120km to go — Roglic in the breakaway

Still 10.9km to go in this stage and the big news is that Primoz Roglic is in this front group. They currently hold a 1:13 advantage over the peloton.

86km to go

Leading the way now is Matteo Jorgenson and Thymen Arensman as they begin the ascent of the Col de la Madeleine.

79km to go

Visma-Lease a bike are now pacing the peloton! Is an attack on the Madeleine approaching from Jonas Vingegaard?

75.5km to go

Victor Campenaerts is driving this group forward and they are taking time back on Roglic's leading group.

So, Jorgensen will lead this front group over the climb which currently includes riders like Felix Gall, Primoz Roglic, Ben O'Connor and of course Vingegaard and Pogacar.

Jorgensen, O'Connor and Rubio have all broken off the front again and left a gap of 55 seconds to the Yellow Jersey group.

The Tour de France heads into the mountains today — and what a stage we have in store.

Today's agenda features a challenging 180.6km stage from Auch to Hautacam. Before reaching the summit of the super-category climb at Hautacam, riders will first tackle a Category 1 and Category 2 ascents.

This stage is expected to significantly shake-up the General Classification standings. Following Tadej Pogacar's minor crash on Wednesday, Jonas Vingegaard will be looking to put the Slovenian under pressure.

Tadej Pogacar fine to continue after crash on Stage 11

Tadej Pogacar came down yesterday as he clipped the back wheel of Tobias Halland Johannessen who was cutting across him to chase a move from the front of the peloton.

Luckily, the Slovenian escaped with some minor cuts and he was thankful for the rest of the peloton for waiting for him to rejoin.

Speaking after the race, he expressed his respect: "Thanks to the peloton in front, they actually waited.

"Obviously, the race was more or less over back there, but still, they could take time – maybe not take too much time – but I would need to go really deep to come back like this.

"Really big respect to everybody in front. Thanks for your support, guys."

Who is favourite for Stage 12?

It is difficult to look past Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar today. The arch rivals have exchanged plenty of blows in the opening 11 stages but this is where it really starts.

Pogacar currently holds a 1:17 lead over the Dane, but that can quickly evaporate on the mountainous slopes of Hautacam.

Without a doubt the big story over the past couple of days has been the emergence of Ben Healy in the Yellow Jersey.

The rider has secured one stage already at the Tour and came 3rd on Stage 10 to make him the first Irishman to wear yellow since Stephen Roche in 1987.

A diminutive but relenting presence, Healy may fancy trying to retain the Maillot Jaune today — it will be no easy feat though against the likes of Pogacar and Vingegaard.

Next comes the Mendizorrotz (4.1km at 7.1%), which features a gruelling middle section (2km at 11.3%), and the now iconic Murgil (2.1km at 10.1%). Its steepest section cranks things up to a brutal 22%, and it's here that the majority of contenders' hopes of victory will be dashed.

They've been dominant this cyclocross season, and you can expect plenty of comparisons to be made between the veteran duo and the Dutch youngsters, who have directed pointed jibes at each other over recent weeks.

The opening weekend of the Spring Classics concludes with the Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne, aka the KBK, which as ever follows hot on the heels of yesterday's Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.
