Historically, the DJI brand has been all about drones. It remains an undisputed leader in that category, but in recent years its also solidified a name in compact cameras for content capture.

The two key ranges are the Osmo Action and the Osmo Pocket. The Action is DJI's classic action camera, with a rugged build designed to happily capture high-quality content no matter how much you bump, drop, submerge, freeze, or generally throw it about. The Pocket is a compact, image-stabilizing gimbal camera designed for vloggers. It can easily switch between vertical and horizontal shooting, and is set up to make selfie capture easy. There are also a couple of outliers: the Osmo 360 360-degree camera and the tiny, wearable Osmo Nano.

Most of these cams are leaders in their respective categories — this brand crops up in numerous best-of lists, including the best action camera, best 360 camera and best vlogging camera. If you're thinking of buying one but aren't quite sure of your options, or which to pick, you've come to the right place.

Our camera review team has tested every single one of the DJI cameras currently available to buy, and below you'll find a quick guide to the different models, plus summaries of our main testing takeaways, and links to read the full review for each (hit the More details button).

DJI Osmo Action

Osmo Actions are traditional action cameras — DJI's answer to a GoPro. They sport an all-in-one design, with all the hallmarks you'd expect from a good action cam: a robust, waterproof, compact design, front and back screens, mics, and features like time-lapse, slow-mo and (on newer models) subject tracking.

The current generation is the Osmo Action 6, but the Osmo Action 5 Pro (there's no not-Pro version, so treat this like a naming quirk) and the Osmo Action 4 are widely available too, including direct from DJI. It's also quite easy to get hold of an Osmo Action 3.

The specs and features differ slightly from model to model — you can see our review of each one by hitting the 'More details' button, and this DJI Osmo Action comparison page is useful for highlighting the differences.

You'll struggle to find either now, but the two previous models are the Action 2 and the original Osmo Action. The Action 2 was a particularly interesting swerve from DJI — it looked completely different from the rest of the range, with a modular build. For the third gen, DJI pivoted straight back to a more traditional all-in-one design, and that's what it's stuck with ever since.

DJI Osmo Pocket

Osmo pockets are compact, gimbal-stabilized 4K cameras designed specifically for vlogging. The current model is the DJI Osmo Pocket 4 — although it's not yet sold in the US. The Osmo Pocket 3 is still widely available to buy, as (to a certain extent) is the DJI Pocket 2.

Both the 3 and 4 boast a compact design, excellent video stabilization, crisp 4K video, the ability to swap easily between vertical and horizontal shooting. The 4th gen version polishes things up a bit, improving the slow-mo mode, bumping up the video specs, tightening up the subject tracking and making it available in more modes, boosting battery life and increasing the internal memory. It also adds a magnetic gimbal arm, onto which accessories such as fill lights can be snapped.

If you're not quite sure about the Pocket range, another option for content creators is to stick with your phone for recording, but add in a DJI Osmo Mobile — a smartphone gimbal with advanced tracking capabilities.

Outliers

Finally, there are a couple of (as-yet) standalone DJI cameras. The DJI Osmo Nano is a shrunk-down and stripped back version of its Action series. Small enough to be mounted on a pendant or hat, it's designed for on-the-go content capture. The magnetic, modular design makes it nice and versatile.

The Osmo 360 is a DJI's first 360-degree camera, and we thought it was "undeniably extremely compelling" first effort. We were impressed with the pricing too, which is very competitive within that particular market.

GoPro Mission 1 Pro: One-Minute Review

The Mission 1 Pro is as rugged as you’d expect any GoPro action camera to be, with a highly water-resistant design — even without an additional casing — and a shock-resistant body that can survive tumble after tumble, but with 8K recording quality it enables you to capture footage with a real cinematic feel.

Thanks to impressive subject tracking and GoPro’s HyperSmooth stabilization tech, the Mission 1 Pro can capture the action smoothly whether you’re wearing it yourself, or following your subject along a trail or down a piste.

Plus, thanks to the new larger 1-inch sensor, low-light video quality is better than ever for a GoPro — letting you take advantage of the roughly two hours of 4K 60p recording time available to you on a single charge even as the sun starts to set.

Meanwhile, HLG HDR format and GP-Log2 support, control over ISO, EV, white balance and shutter speed, and the freedom to record in 8K/30p open gate — the full height and width of the versatile 4:3 aspect ratio sensor — will give you more artistic and post-processing options that make this action camera feel more like a professional piece of kit.

The downside of all this is that the Mission 1 Pro doesn’t come cheap. It’ll set you back $699 / £599.99 / AU$1,099.95 if you aren’t already a GoPro member, while members can take advantage of a healthy discount, with prices starting at $599 / £509.99 / AU$949.95. This sure is pricey even for one of the best action cameras when DJI rivals cost substantially less, but if you’re going to take full advantage of its cinematic capabilities, it’s certainly one to consider.

The only real disappointment is that its photography capabilities left me wanting. With its optional point-and-shoot camera-style grip I had hoped that the GoPro Mission 1 Pro might perform well as a stills snapper, but it did struggle at times. Hopefully, the ILS model with its Micro Four Thirds lens mount will deliver a more all-round performance when it debuts later this year.

The grip does at least help make the Mission 1 Pro much easier to handle when shooting video, and it feels like a useful upgrade for anyone who plans to use this GoPro as their new vacation camera, and take advantage of its improved video and audio quality, and durable design.

The GoPro Mission 1 Pro is available to buy now for $699 / £599.99 / AU$1,099.95 (non-member price, or $599 / £509.99 / AU$949.95 for members), while the more basic Mission 1 will cost you $599 / £529 /AU$949.95 (non-member price, or $499 / £439.99 / AU$799.95). The Mission 1 Pro ILS costs the same as the Pro, but it won’t launch until later in 2026.

Other bundles include one with a point-and-shoot camera-style grip, which I had for my review. This bundle feels quite pricey at $779.99 / £679.99 / AU$1,229.95, seemingly with no member discount at the time of writing.

The Mission 1 Pro and Mission 1 share a lot of the same features and hardware, but the Pro version unlocks 8K 60fps footage and 8K Open Gate 4:3 filming for greater editing flexibility. You’ll also unlock slow-mo 4K video at 240fps, and 1080p up to 960fps for more extreme slow-mo shots.

Meanwhile the ILS model is interesting as it takes away some features — such as built-in autofocus and the ultra-wide lens of the regular Pro — to give you more control, with manual focus control and a Micro Four Thirds (MFT) mount, enabling you to attach a wide variety of lenses for different cinematic effects. If you’re more of a cinematographer than a casual user, the ILS model could be what you’re after.

That said, even the base-model Mission 1 is a fair bit pricier than the GoPro Hero 13 Black — our current pick for the best overall action camera. If you care about low-light shots the Mission 1 could be worth the price premium, but for a lot of people who are just looking to capture fun clips of their action sports escapades even the basic model may be overkill.

GoPro Mission 1 Pro: Specs

GoPro Mission 1 Pro: Design

The ideal action camera is one that can handle just about anything you throw at it, and the GoPro Mission 1 Pro GoPro is a camera that’s designed to be pushed to its limits.

If you’re a fan of underwater video, the Mission 1 Pro boasts a design that’s waterproof to 66ft / 20m without the need for a housing — plus the hydrophobic lens cover should help keep water splashes and droplets from obstructing your view massively when you’re using the camera above the waves.

It’s also rated to work in temperatures between -20C and 45C, with its power and shoot buttons designed to make them easier to press while wearing the kind of thick gloves that are necessary in frigid climates.

The Mission 1 Pro’s shock-resistant body can also survive tumbles and drops, giving it an almost indestructible feel. While I never pushed the Mission 1 Pro too far, I never felt like I needed to be careful with it.

Moving on from the action-focused aspects, the 2.59-inch OLED rear touchscreen display offers enough real estate for you to easily manage and track your settings while also leaving plenty of room to clearly see your compositions.

Meanwhile, the 1.4-inch front LCD is a good size for vloggers to track what is/isn’t in frame as they talk to camera, with a convenient and concise readout of your shot settings letting you know that you haven’t, for example, accidentally swiped to a different mode while turning the camera 180 degrees.

Included in the box are a lens hood to help reduce glare — just note that it can fall off easily, so keep an eye on it, or be prepared to pick up replacements — a 2150mAh Enduro 2 battery, an adhesive mount, mounting buckle and a thumb screw.

You’ll need to provide your own microSD card, as there’s no internal storage. The Mission 1 Pro relies on V30 and Class A2-rated microSDs for the best performance; A1 cards will work, but will encode more slowly.

You can pick up a series of attachments for this camera, including ND filters; however, the bigger sensor size of this camera means the Hero 13 Black’s suite of lens attachments can’t be used here, and sadly there aren’t, as yet, equivalent accessories for the Mission Pro 1.

Other GoPro attachments, such as harnesses or helmet/bike mounts, should be compatible, as the Mission 1 Pro relies on the same bracket as models that came before.

Lastly I’ll mention the point-and-shoot camera-style grip attachment, which was supplied to me for testing alongside the Mission 1 Pro and can be purchased separately ($99.99 / £89.99 / AU$154.95) or as part of a bundle. The grip is incredibly simple, yet effective at transforming the Mission 1 into something that feels more like a regular point-and-shoot compact.

When it comes to capturing quick videos, such as clips at the beach or at a festival, the grip makes it easy to hold the camera without the risk that your hand will get in the way of the lens, although as mentioned, the Mission 1 Pro doesn’t perform as well as a stills camera — more on that below.

GoPro Mission 1 Pro: Performance

To make video capture easier than ever the Mission 1 Pro features a slew of preset capture modes that adjust settings based on your needs, with modes for Vlogging, SportPOV, TimeLapse, Open Gate, SlowMo, Low Light, Dive and plenty more.

You can tweak the settings for each mode to fine-tune your image quality needs, and also manage modes by hiding ones you never use, or adding custom settings that are your go-tos.

For most scenarios, I found the 4K open gate option to be the most versatile. The image quality is solid, and you have the option to reframe the footage to 16:9 or 9:16 later based on your needs — plus it’s less of a drain on the battery than shooting in 8K.

Vlog-style recording is made easy thanks to the front screen, and automatic subject tracking that centers you in the frame — ideal for casual vloggers who constantly find they steadily drift out of shot unless they pay close attention to the camera they’re holding.

The audio quality is decent too, picking up voices and essential sounds, but cutting out wind noise.

Slow mo is also a lot of fun, though as you’ll see in my example video above, raw untuned footage at resolutions lower than 4K can start to look grainier than is ideal — upscaling and/or sharpening the image with editing software is essential to get things to look better.

The larger sensor also helps in low-light conditions, especially with the new Low Light shooting mode. Unsurprisingly, in proper darkness the camera still struggles, but with some illumination remaining the camera performs well in this mode.

Where I’m less convinced of the Mission 1 Pro’s abilities is when it comes to stills photography, which is a massive shame considering you have the option to add the point-and-shoot grip.

Whenever I tried to take photos I found myself fighting against its lack of autofocus — or even manual focus — and the less-than-ideal zoom quality. The camera has a fixed focus with a minimum focus distance around 60cm — which counts out close-up photography — and an optimal focal distance of about 1.5m. This also means it isn’t focused to infinity, so landscapes will appear a little soft in your shots, especially since the larger sensor has a shallower depth of field than previous GoPros.

In addition, as soon as you zoom in you’ll find the image quality drops a fair amount, although this is to be expected from the digital zoom this camera uses.

The overall quality isn’t terrible, though, and the point-and-shoot grip does offer some useful versatility for video recording beyond the more traditional action camera use-cases.

How I tested the GoPro Mission 1 Pro

I spent just over a month with the Mission 1 Pro, taking it out on excursions to snap photos and videos to test its capabilities not just as an action camera, but as a point-and-shoot video capture tool — with that latter case aided by the point-and-shoot grip.

If you’re planning to use the GoPro Mission 1 Pro as your vacation camera — aided by its durable design and waterproofness — the grip is super helpful at helping to keep you hands out of frame, and as a pure action camera the GoPro fits the same mounts and accessories as previous models like the Hero 13 Black (save for the lens attachments).

Inspired by shows like Hunted and Jet Lag The Game, a lot of my testing focused on running and vlogging with the action camera to capture my fitness progress and to record personal cuts of games of hide-and-seek across London — passing the camera between my friends so they could record their stints too. They found the GoPro super easy to use, with the smoothing tech and subject tracking ensuring thaty vlogs and action shots look great without requiring constant focus on what the camera is doing — you just press go and it’ll come with you.

Its commendation is in large part thanks to the excellent-quality 5.3K video, a superb range of accessories, including new auto-detected Lens Mods, and improved battery life and heat dissipation.

I don't record much video for social media specifically, but if you do, then you'll love the 27MP sensor, which enables footage to be recorded in an 8:7 aspect ratio. Say goodbye to the awkward cropping of landscape footage for portrait outputs.

GoPro made a splash recently with its announcement of a new trio of cameras — the Mission 1 series. With 50MP 1-inch sensors, the powerful GP3 processor, and in one case even a Micro Four Thirds lens mount, these are the most sophisticated and advanced action cameras I've ever seen — and I don't think you should buy one.

Not right now, anyway, because right now, the Amazon Prime Day deals on the GoPro Hero 13 Black are absolutely out of this world.

While the Mission 1 cameras are looking like a bit of a revolutionary reset for GoPro, the Hero 13 Black was very much not that. It was, and is, pretty much exactly what you'd expect a GoPro to be — a little cuboid, small enough to wear on a helmet or chest mount, capable of capturing crisp, stabilized 5.3K video and punchy, detailed photos. One thing it did introduce, however, was the idea of Lens Mods — clip-on accessories that significantly alter the perspective of the image.

It's a great action camera, one that still sits at the top of our list of the best GoPros while we're finishing up our tests of the Mission 1 series. And right now, as we enter the final hours of Prime Day, you can get hold of the GoPro Hero 13 Black, together with a raft of accessories, for as little as $399 in the US, and an incredible £269 in the UK.

One of the most versatile action cameras

The Hero 13 Black uses the same sensor as the Hero 12 Black. A 27MP multi-aspect 8:7 sensor, it captures imagery in a near-square format that makes it easy to crop footage into different aspect ratios. Given that many content creators post their footage to both YouTube (16:9 cinematic aspect ratio) and TikTok (9:16 vertical aspect ratio), this is an invaluable timesaver, making it easy to spread the same content across multiple platforms.

It captures video at a maximum resolution of 5.3K 60fps, and you'll likely have no problems with overheating — in our full GoPro Hero 13 Black review, Tim was recording 5.3K on the go-kart track for more than an hour, and the camera kept up.

Some were disappointed that the Hero 13 Black didn't add 8K, as this felt like it would be the next logical step — and indeed, as mentioned, the Mission 1 cameras can shoot in 8K. But honestly, I think for the vast majority of content creators, especially amateurs and hobbyists, you just don't need it. Very few monitors or televisions will even display 8K, so its main use is allowing you to crop losslessly into footage, effectively giving you a digital zoom. Handy? Sure. Essential? Hardly.

And with the Hero 13 Black, you have a unique, exciting tool in your arsenal — the HB-Series lens mods. These are designed specifically for the Hero 13 Black and will only work with this camera. Clip them on, and you can shoot with an anamorphic perspective for cinema-style shots, or go ultra-wide to radically extend your field of view, get super close-up with a dedicated macro, or control bright sunlight with an ND filter. They're an extra cost, but they're inexpensive, you can individually buy the ones you think you'll use, and if you jump on this Prime Day deal, you'll already have saved a packet on the camera itself.

You can further customise the Hero 13 Black with extras like the Media Mod, which adds a directional mic for better audio, or the Light Mode, giving you a burst of LED illumination. Fundamentally, this is an action camera that's very easy to set up exactly how you want it, in a way that suits your style of adventurous shooting.

This deal is as cheap as I've ever seen the GoPro Hero 13 Black, and if you've ever thought about jumping on board and trying it out, the next eight or so hours are the time to do it. It's worth noting also that GoPro has a pretty robust trade-in program – so if, down the line, you want to trade up for a Mission 1 camera, you'll have the option.

But right now, while Prime Day deals are still live and our review of the Mission 1 cameras is still in process, I'm saying skip it. The Hero 13 Black is outrageously good value.

The Amazon Prime Day deals are well and truly up and running — and if you're looking for an action camera, I've found a genuinely fantastic deal.

Cheap action cameras are all over the market these days, and having used and reviewed a few of them, I'm somewhat wary — the image quality just tends to be so poor that they aren't even worth their two-digit price. When it comes to cameras, you're almost always better off going for an older model from a well-regarded name than a newer one from a budget line — and that's why I think this massive deal on the DJI Osmo Action 4 is one to snap up.

First reviewed by our Cameras Editor Timothy Coleman back in 2023, the Osmo Action 4 takes the classic GoPro-style form actor and crams in a 1/1.3-inch sensor that delivers excellent video quality. With comprehensive waterproofing to depths of 18m (no case needed), highly effective RockSteady image stabilization, and a brilliant magnetic mounting system for accessories, it's a comprehensively equipped action cam for capturing dynamic footage of your adventures — and it's able to go places you wouldn't dream of taking your phone or 'proper' camera.

Sure, it's not the best action cam on the market anymore — not while the DJI Osmo Action 6 and GoPro Hero 13 Black exist. But the price! The Prime Day savings on the DJI Osmo Action 4 put it at $169 in the US and £199 in the UK. To put this in context, when Tim first reviewed it, the Osmo Action 4 cost $399 / £379!

A complete package for content creators

Despite being a few years old, the Osmo Action 4 is still more than capable of producing imagery to the standard demanded by content creators in 2026. With a topline video resolution of 10-bit 4K video, it produces crisp and punchy footage, and offers a number of slow-mo options, as well as the option to shoot in the D-Log color profile to maximize dynamic range. This is everything a content creator could want, especially when you also factor in the punchy 10MP stills.

The later, pricier cameras are better in some areas — I've used the Osmo Action 6, and its low-light abilities are absolutely unreal. But most action camera footage is shot in bright daylight; they tend to be used for capturing POV footage of activities like surfing, cycling, snorkeling or skiing, and if you're not planning to do much shooting at night, you won't have a problem. And besides, as Tim found, the Osmo Action 4 isn't actually all that bad in low light — it's just not a patch on the cameras that have come along since.

The Osmo Action 4's simple UI means kids can use it without too much of a problem, making it a brilliant option for family holidays — this is a camera that won't mind being dropped, splashed, knocked or bumped.

It's also worth mentioning that if you're in the US, ongoing trade restrictions mean it can be difficult to get hold of newer DJI cameras like the Osmo Action 6, meaning an older model like the Action 4 could well be your best option.

But even if that's not an issue, at this price, I'd recommend the Osmo Action 4 to most people over the Osmo Action 6 — and I loved the Osmo Action 6. I took one on holiday to New York, and have it in a drawer beside me right now!

But this is just such good value for the level of functionality and image quality on offer. It's the perfect gateway for anyone thinking about dipping a toe into the world of action cameras — and it's a much, much better buy than a cheap-and-nasty action camera from a brand you've never heard of.

Amazon's Prime Day sale is here (running from June 23 to 26, and exclusive to Prime members), and if a 360 camera has been on your wish list, it's the perfect time to act. Two of Insta360's best models are getting solid discounts in the sale — but the one I'd actually put in my basket might not be the one you're expecting.

I reviewed the Insta360 X5 last year, and its low-light performance was the standout feature for me. It remains, in my view, the best all-rounder Insta360 makes. At 21% off ($434.99, down from $549.99 for the Standard Bundle, a $115 saving), it's a pretty tempting buy in the Prime Day Sale.

But my colleague Peter Fenech has since put the newer Insta360 X4 Air through its paces, and with Prime Day discounts of 25% on the Standard Bundle ($299.99 at Amazon, down from $399.99) and 26% on the Starter Bundle ($324.99, down from $439.99, also a $115 saving), I think it's the smarter buy for most people.

The X4 Air inherits a lot of what made the X5 so appealing. It uses the same easy-to-swap lens replacement system (which can be a real lifesaver if you scrape a lens on the ground), and it's waterproof to the same 15m depth without a housing.

At 165g, it's also noticeably lighter than the X5's 200g. It's not a huge number on paper, but you'll feel the difference after an hour of holding a selfie stick overhead.

The real divergence is in sensor size. The X5 uses larger 1/1.28-inch sensors, while the X4 Air steps down to 1/1.8-inch (still bigger than the original X4's sensors, for context). In daylight, you'd struggle to tell the two apart. It's only once the light fades that the gap opens up, with the X5's PureVideo mode giving it around a two-stop low-light advantage over the X4 Air.

That sounds like a point in the X5's favor, and it is. But I think that the vast majority of 360 footage gets shot in daylight — think travel clips, bike rides, beach days, family get-togethers — and the X4 Air handles all of that with ease. Peter was impressed by its image quality overall, and found its low-light performance better than expected even without PureVideo on board.

On the battery life front, the X5's larger 2,400mAh battery wins out for marathon sessions: its Endurance Mode can run for over three hours at 5.7K, versus around 105 minutes for the X4 Air with the same settings. But at 8K/30fps (the resolution most people will actually shoot in), both cameras land at roughly 90 minutes.

If you're a professional creator, you regularly shoot in low light, or you simply want the best 360 camera Insta360 currently makes, the X5 at 21% off remains an easy recommendation.

But if this is your first 360 camera, or you want something that genuinely disappears into a pocket, the X4 Air gives you almost everything that made the X5 special, for $100 to $135 less. That's where my money would be going this Prime Day.

On June 1, GoPro filed a regulatory notice disclosing "substantial doubt about the company's ability to continue." The culprit? A deadly combination of increased competition, plummeting sales and soaring memory prices. It seems scarcely believable that the firm that essentially invented the action camera should be struggling, but there's been a long road to get to this point.

GoPro's origin story is almost comically Californian. Founder Nick Woodman started the company in 2002 with a loan from his parents and a surfer's frustration at not being able to capture what he was doing out on the waves.

Woodman's first product was a wrist strap designed to hold a camera, but by 2004 he was selling his own branded cameras, designed specifically for action sports photography. In 2012, GoPro accounted for more than a fifth of all digital camcorders sold in the US. A year later, Woodman would become a billionaire.

GoPro's 2014 IPO was the high watermark for the company. GoPro wasn't just a camera maker by that point, but a full-on lifestyle brand. It had democratized the hero shot and put cinematic self-shot footage within reach of anyone who owned a surfboard, a mountain bike or a pair of skis.

Where things started to go wrong

Suddenly, problems arrived quickly and from multiple directions. In 2016, GoPro launched its Karma drone to considerable fanfare, only to recall every single unit within weeks after some begun to lose power and drop out of the sky. The drone made a brief reappearance in 2017 before being quietly canned; margin pressures were cited, but the reality was that the China-based DJI already had the consumer drone market sewn up in a way that left almost no room for a late entrant.

GoPro's ventures into virtual reality with the Omni and Fusion followed a similar faltering trajectory. Meanwhile, smartphone cameras were getting capable enough to satisfy the casual end of the market, while DJI and Insta360 were building serious action camera competition at the top. GoPro found itself squeezed from both sides.

A bold pivot toward a direct-to-consumer model and subscription service helped stabilize things for a while, with subscriber numbers growing sharply through 2020 and 2021. But revenue kept trending the wrong way, while the competitive pressure never let up.

An unexpected blow

The latest twist in this tale is that GoPro's current crisis hasn't been caused by a rival outmaneuvering it or a botched product launch. Instead, the AI infrastructure boom has generated a voracious demand for memory chips at the datacenter level, pulling supply away from consumer electronics and sending prices soaring; memory reportedly more than doubled in cost in some cases during the first quarter of this year. Pair that with weaker sales through April and May, and the regulatory filing starts to make sense.

GoPro was already running on thin margins, so these rising AI-driven costs come at a terrible time. The company's own warning states that without new financing or a strategic transaction, it may be required to "significantly reduce, restructure, or cease operations." No specific plans along those lines have been announced as the time of writing.

What it means for you

There's a cruel irony in the timing. GoPro launched its Mission 1 range just weeks ago — a trio of cameras that represent a genuine step forward for the brand, with 8K capture, impressive stabilization, and enough versatility to appeal well beyond the traditional action camera crowd. We have an in-depth review on the way, but our early impressions suggest that the Mission 1 is a great piece of engineering, and that the company that still knows what it's doing when it comes to hardware design. The filing, however, shows that it may be running out of time to prove it.

And if the worst happens and the brand does exit the market, there could be some major consequences for consumers. GoPro is the Coca-Cola of action cameras: the brand that everyone reaches for first and the name that defines the category in mainstream consciousness. Rivals like Insta360 and DJI make excellent products, and they'd continue to push each other forward without GoPro around. But its loss would mean losing the market's default reference point, and losing the brand that competitors have spent years measuring themselves against. It's the sort of presence that doesn't get replaced easily, and its absence rarely works out in the consumer's favor.

Nothing is written in stone yet, and GoPro may yet turn things around. But the notice feels like the sort of document that tends to mark a turning point, one way or another. We'll be keeping an eye on developments, and will bring you more news on what happens next for GoPro.

Insta360 invited me to a hands-on event for its upcoming Luna Pro and Luna Ultra vlogging cameras, during which time I had the opportunity to test the dual-lens Ultra version and speak with the 360 camera manufacturer's co-founder, Max Richter.

I quizzed Max on everything from branching out into a new market dominated by DJI, to what Insta360's competitive advantages are and how a surprising number of Insta360 fans are using their action cams for photography.

There's still a lot we don't know about the Luna cameras ahead of their full unveil, and I'm restricted with what I can share because of a staggered embargo. Nonetheless, my conversation with Max shed a little light on where the innovative camera manufacturer is heading.

Rivalling DJI

Insta360 and DJI are launching new action cameras and compact video cameras at breakneck speed, seemingly leaving the likes of GoPro behind when it comes to innovation, even if GoPro recently announced its trio of Mission 1 cameras.

The 360 camera space is very much dominated by Insta360, who commands almost 70% market share, despite DJI announcing its own Osmo 360, and GoPro, its Max 2.

And the same can be said for DJI and compact vlogging cameras — its Pocket series has sold by the bucketload for years, the latest model being the Pocket 4, with no obvious competition. That was, until the Luna.

I expect the vlogging camera market to be a tough nut to crack for Insta360, but I believe it has the necessary software to give it a go, and now, finally, the hardware with the new Luna Pro and Luna Ultra.

"Luna is a new space for us, because it's going to be the first time and we actually have a real vlogging tool on the market," Max tells me.

"It's going to be seriously considered by prosumers or professional creators. This market category is quite big already, right? But we think there's space that we bring some new things to it. A little bit of competition to it.

"At the same time, though, what we're not going to do is to compete on the price. It's definitely gonna compete more on the on the product itself. It's a higher-end solution. It's not price competition, we really want to compete on the product."

And how will Insta360 compete on product? For one, the Luna seemingly matches the latest DJI Pocket cameras, at least where headline features are concerned.

The single-lens Luna Pro rivals the Pocket 4, while the dual-lens Luna Ultra, which I am testing, squares up to the upcoming Pocket 4P.

Like DJI, both Luna cameras utilize a 1-inch sensor and 10-bit video recording, while the Ultra features a second 3x camera, as the Pocket 4P will. All these cameras are supported with 3-axis gimbal stabilization, too.

And while Insta360 is coming into this space years after DJI, it now has its five-star Mic Pro wireless mic to rival the DJI Mic 3. So far, the Shenzen-based pair looks evenly matched.

Purely matching DJI while not competing on price is clearly not going to cut it, though, especially for an unproven first-generation product. That's where the Luna's neat modular screen gives it the hardware edge.

I've tested the unique feature, and it is truly brilliant. The rotating touchscreen is part of a removable component which also includes the main camera controls; the zoom lever, gimbal joystick, and record button.

You can use the screen to view and control the camera remotely, complete with subject tracking, giving the impression of having a cameraperson. What's more, the unit is fitted with a microphone, meaning you can view, record, track subjects, and present to camera.

That's what 'competing on product' looks like, and this game-changing feature alone could be enough to tempt first-timers and DJI fans to switch.

Powering the hardware

Insta360 is coming into the space fresh, but behind the scenes, it has long made cutting-edge software the foundation of its camera tech, which is crucial, especially in the 360 camera space.

“The new generation of content creators want convenience, ease of use, simple sharing on TikTok, Instagram, and so on, and that’s where Insta360 excels due to the software excellence,” says Max.

"Software is the key reason why you choose our products. Not everybody has the time to go into the mobile app and edit their videos, reframe the moment — that’s an extra step in the workflow that a lot of people are not willing to spend time on. We think AI will ultimately be a solution to that.

“The software or AI can choose the best moment or the best shot, or even be trained to know what is your preference in terms of editing. It’s getting better and better. I recently used it [Insta360's app] for diving videos when I didn’t have time to do a lot of reframing, but it perfectly got me the right frame on the sharks and turtles and on myself, that I couldn’t have done better in this short amount of time.

"On the hardware side, you’re not able to iterate so fast, but on the software side, I think we can play out our advantage; we can move very fast.

"To be honest, I see camera technology going in this direction. In the future, it will be hard to differentiate yourself on the hardware side; you also need to invest in the software, because the software can also balance out a lot of the hardware deficiencies."

I've personally used Insta360's app for videos shot with its 360 cameras, such as the X5, and can testify how much it simplifies the editing process. The same software is being used for the Luna vlogging cameras and might just take out pain points for editing vlogging content.

Max talked up Insta360's software credentials, but in a way, he's also doing the Luna a disservice — my first impressions of the camera itself are very positive, and it's great to see some competition for the DJI Pocket series.

What is currently unknown is pricing — just how uncompetitive will the Luna be? We'll find out soon enough.

I spent the UK’s sweltering Spring bank holiday outside — getting sunburnt on every inch of my exposed skin and testing the brand-new GoPro Mission 1 Pro. Given GoPro’s history I was expecting an action camera, but was greeted by that and a rugged vlog camera that can handle (almost) any adventure you could throw at it provided you respect its limitations.

The Mission 1 Pro is one of a trio of new Mission 1 action cams and, like the best GoPros that came before it, is ready for action. The Sport POV mode is set up to perfectly capture your perspective as you tackle a mountain bike trail, for example, while subject tracking is ideal for following your partner as they race through woodland or down a slope (keeping them framed in the shot so you have one less detail to focus on).

Plus with the Dive mode and a design that’s waterproof to 66ft (20m) without a housing you can easily capture color-corrected underwater footage as you snorkel. Though for me it just provided some extra reassurance I wouldn’t ruin my camera as I snapped shots while my partner and I paddled around in the water just-off Brighton beach.

My weekend was a lot more relaxed than you might expect for a GoPro excursion, but the Mission 1 Pro still felt like a solid companion.

As I just mentioned its rugged design meant I was never worried about it getting damaged, and that same subject tracking is utilized effectively by its Vlog mode — which in conjunction with its cover screen makes it easy to capture selfie-style video as my partner and I wandered through the city’s tight lanes and gardens.

For pure quality, however, you can’t beat the 8K open gate capture which delivers generally high-quality 4:3 video that can be comfortably cropped to 16:9 or 9:16 based on your needs — or be used to clip 44MP photo stills so you don’t need to take yourself out of the moment to swap between capture modes.

The quiet champion of my days out wasn’t the camera itself, it was a new add-on: the point-and-shoot grip case. The three-part attachment makes it much easier to hold the Mission 1 Pro and use it like any point-and-shoot camera, and it can be picked up separately or as part of the Grip Edition Bundle — which costs $779.99 / £679.99 / AU$1,229.95 for non-GoPro Premium subscribers

Capturing quick shots here and there I felt no pressure to be choosy as I had plenty of battery life to eat through. GoPro promises the Mission 1 Pro’s 2,150mAh Enduro 2 battery can deliver over five hours of 1080p 30fps video (or over three of 4K 30fps) and this translated to me finishing my day with charge to spare — letting me refuel the GoPro overnight so it would be ready to go again in the morning.

Some of the less standard shooting modes, though, will be a bigger hit to your battery. I took a few slow motion clips which ate about 15% of my charge. The upshot, however, are ridiculously impressive frame rates — burst Slow-Mo captures offers up to 10 seconds of 1080p at 960fps capture, working out at 5m 20s playback time at 30fps), plus slightly slower frame rates are available at higher resolution.

These slow-mo shots also clearly exposed a couple of the Mission 1 Pro’s weaknesses: focus and zoom quality.

For some burst slow-mo I captured my partner Izzy moving back and forth on a swing but I didn’t realize I’d zoomed in on the shot — it was only to 1.6x but when watching footage back on my computer it was clear the digital crop didn’t pair well with the 1080p video quality.

My other, standard slow-mo footage of Izzy blowing a dandelion was instead ruined because I got too close to her. I wanted to get a better frame of the seeds drifting away but instead the plant was entirely out of focus — as I realised after the fact that tapping on the screen tunes to auto-exposure and not an auto-focus, and that there are no manual focus controls.

These issues appeared in plenty of my other shots too, especially my photos, as it became clear the point-and-shoot grip might have changed my perspective of the Mission 1 Pro but hadn’t actually changed how the hardware functions.

With the grip attached, I was treating the GoPro Mission 1 Pro like the Canon Powershot V1 I had recently been testing for an upcoming piece, when it isn’t the same kind of beast even if it felt the same in my hands.

That’s not to say the Mission 1 Pro is therefore bad — I think it’s pretty great — and the Grip Edition adds some excellent versatility to the snapper. You just need to respect the fact the Mission 1 Pro is still an action camera at its core: this leads to a rugged design that feels perfect for surviving most adventures, but there are some hardware nuances you’ll need to navigate as you vlog your experiences.

With my lessons learned I plan to keep testing the Mission 1 Pro as I try to crack this camera — be sure to look out for my upcoming in-depth review — but if you’re keen to pick one up today it’s currently up for preorder at various retailers for $699.99 / £599.99 / AU$1,099.95.

Action cams are primarily for video, but how do they fare for photography? It’s an area that leading manufacturers, such as Insta360 and DJI, have been exploring recently with a glut of quirky accessories.

Take the Photography Grip for the Insta360 X5. It transforms my favorite 360 degree action cam into a point-and-shoot — a use case that I wouldn’t necessarily have otherwise considered.

Or how about the optical viewfinder for the Insta360 Go 3S, which is now available in a Retro Bundle? This, again, changes its primary function as a tiny 4K camera into a waist-level stills shooter.

Third-parties are in on the act too — SmallRig makes a cage for the DJI Osmo Action 6, which significantly improves its handling for photography, and our reviewer Sam Kieldsen loved it.

I was curious about these accessories that turn some of the best action cams into point-and-shoots — are they simple novelties, or are they genuinely useful? How suited are action cams really for photography? I had to find out for myself...

Getting a grip

Photography with action cameras is certainly possible, but there’s no doubt that these types of cameras are primarily designed and equipped for video. However, the Insta360 X5 Photography Grip — which costs $49.99 / £47.99 / AU$87.99 and is available in black or white at Insta360's store — certainly improves the camera's handling for photography.

It fixes to the tripod mount on the camera's underside, and connects through the USB-C port — all you need to do is open the X5's USB-C door to 90-degrees and then pull the cover completely off (and find a safe place for it as you'll need it again for regular use!).

The X5's Photography Grip is comfy to hold and features a simple shutter release button. It aids shooting at awkward angles and framing elements such as leading lines, because it’s positioned away from the camera and gives an easy hold to frame shots in vertical and horizontal perspectives.

I especially enjoyed holding the camera vertically with the grip at the top. And given the X5 is fully waterproof (to 16ft / 5m), its lens can be submerged in water too — this very feature enables creative shot such as above and below water simultaneously with the lens half-submerged. (Given the USB-C door needs to be removed to attach the grip, however, you can’t fully submerge the camera with grip because that port is consequently exposed.)

Besides design, many action cameras actually have decent specs for photography; the Insta360 X5 is able to shoot 72MP stills that cover 360-degrees, or 36MP stills in a single lens mode, which was my primary concern with the grip.

Most action cameras have a wide-angle FOV, the X5 even more so. If you want telephoto shots, then action cams aren’t for you, period. However, for scenes that feature a point of interest close to the camera, they can offer truly dynamic perspectives. The X5 specifically has Ultra, Dewarp and Linear options — the latter corrects image distortions and was my top pick for everyday photography.

And the latest action cameras typically major on attractive color science, such as the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 with its Leica-inspired looks (for which there's an Xplorer Grip Pro kit like the one SmallRig makes for DJI, which costs $99 / £99 / AU$180). The X5's range of color profiles, however, are much more limited, but it can shoot in RAW format to make color grading easier after the event. I'd like to see more photography-first features added by a firmware update.

Action cameras are also small and discreet, making them somewhat suited to street photography. So, with its wide-angle perspective, waterproof design and small body, the X5 with grip can actually be a surprisingly powerful every day photography camera. That said, it needs to process photos faster too to be taken seriously as a stills camera.

A niche accessory worth trying?

The Insta360 X5 will still primarily be a video camera for me. The same can be said for the Insta360 Go 3S even with the cutesy optical viewfinder that comes in the new Retro Bundle (and which can be purchased separately if you already own the camera).

However, don’t write these cameras off for photography, especially action cams such as the Ace Pro 2 and DJI Osmo Action 6, which are better equipped for stills. If you want an altogether different use for your action camera, and enjoy shooting a wide perspective with the freedom of a small, lightweight and rugged build, you might just discover a new niche with the help of one of these accessories.

Let me be upfront: I'm not a typical action camera user, despite reviewing them for a living. I've always been more interested in photography, and general walkaround photography at that.

I own a DJI Osmo Action 6, and I think it's a hugely capable little video camera for vlogging and sports capture, but the idea of using it for street photography had never crossed my mind. Action cams work best strapped to helmets or surfboards, not clutched in the hand while wandering around a city in search of interesting faces, scenes and light. The form factor alone makes the whole experience feel wrong: too small to hold comfortably; buttons that require a firm press (which can nudge the camera just as the shutter fires); it's a photography experience that feels about as intuitive as taking snapshots with a bar of soap.

Then SmallRig sent me its Dedicated Street Photography Cage for the DJI Osmo Action 6, and everything changed.

The cage (which costs $59.49 / £63.90 / AU$109.90) is a surprisingly elegant piece of design for what, on paper, sounds like a purely utilitarian product. The black body with silver top trim is unapologetically retro, and it looks lovely — the kind of thing that would draw compliments rather than confused glances when you're out on the street.

More importantly, it feels great in my hand. The contoured, rubber-coated grip positions the user's forefinger naturally over a large orange shutter button, and the whole thing is substantial enough to hold with confidence without adding enough bulk to make it awkward. I took the setup on a long weekend away to East Sussex and, over several outings, it slipped into my jacket pocket between shots without any fuss.

There are some smart practical details here, too. A hollow section inside the grip can store a spare Osmo Extreme Battery Plus, boosting the Action 6's already formidable battery life. A cold shoe mount and two 1/4"-20 threaded holes (one up top, one on the bottom) offer plenty of expansion options too — I didn't attach anything extra during my testing, but the tripod mount on the base in particular feels like it significantly widens what this little camera can do.

DJI's own mounting points on the camera base remain accessible through the cage, too, which is a thoughtful touch. I could even use DJI's optional Osmo Action 6 Macro Lens or FOV Lens attachments with the cage attached, though I had to leave off SmallRig's own included lens protector. That's not a big issue, frankly: it looks nice but feels more like an aesthetic accessory than a functional one.

The cage also comes supplied with a sturdy shoulder strap, which is adjustable. It works perfectly well as a cross-body or shoulder carry strap, and you can also shorten it enough so that it'll sling round your neck like a classic point-and-shoot neck strap.

Does it actually take better photos?

No — but it was never going to. The image quality is identical to shooting with the uncaged Action 6, because the sensor and lens haven't changed. What has changed, and changed dramatically, is the shooting experience. The button travel issue that plagues hand-held action cam photography is solved here: you're now pressing a proper shutter button with a reassuring amount of feedback, rather than jabbing at a shallow rubbery nub and hoping the camera doesn't shift at the moment of capture. It sounds like a small thing, but it makes a huge difference.

I should be honest about one limitation: there's no viewfinder, and for someone like me who's always found composing shots through a screen somewhat unsatisfying, that does blunt the experience a little. The Osmo Action 6 in its cage is not going to replace a Fujifilm X100VI, a Ricoh GR IV, or a Leica M EV1 — those cameras offer a fundamentally different experience, with far more manual control and, yes, better image quality. What it does compare favorably to is shooting on a smartphone. It's more comfortable, more tactile, and — thanks to the retro-leaning design — considerably more discreet. While I was using it on the streets, nobody gave it a second glance.

If you already own a DJI Osmo Action 6 and you've ever wanted to use it for something other than action footage or vlogging, SmallRig's cage is a transformative add-on. It won't turn your action cam into Henri Cartier-Bresson's Leica. But it might well turn it into something you use a lot more often.

Insta360 has revealed one of the wackiest camera kits for 2026 — a ‘Retro Bundle’ edition of its thumb-sized 4K camera, the Go 3S.

We rate the original as the best ‘small’ 4K action camera — it's truly tiny and can slot into spaces no other camera can, or be rigged up to athletes and so on for a first-person POV of the action.

But unlike the original, which comes with a dock with flip up LCD display for composing images and remote control, the retro version feels more like a Polaroid.

You get the 4K camera, which also shoots 12MP stills, in one of two colorways, with a matching optical viewfinder dock instead.

The waist-level viewfinder mirrors the view in front for composing shots, is fully optical, and doubles up as a selfie mirror.

And if it wasn't obvious from the pictures, the camera itself has no screen, just a single button. That's right, this is a 4K digital video camera with no screen whatsoever, just the button — that's as retro as digital video cameras get.

A single press of the camera's button initiates video recording, a double tap takes a photo and so on, but if you need more control, that's where Insta360's app comes in.

The camera can still be paired with a smartphone through the Insta360 app, through which users can remotely control the camera.

And it's still the same Go 3S, with it's unique tiny body and video/photo skills, just wrapped in a different skin that's sure to appeal to analog lovers — call this the Polaroid-like video camera!

Insta360 sells a leather case for the retro bundle, which has a different aesthetic and feels like an odd match, but it looks good in its own right — you can see it in the gallery above.

The Go 3S Retro Bundle costs $300 / £279 / AU$470 for the 64GB version or $320 / £299 / AU$500 for the 128GB version. The latter feels like the obvious pick — you'll want as much internal storage as you can get because there's no card slot.

If you already own the Go 3S and like the sound of retro viewfinder, the viewfinder part can be purchased separately for $48 / £46 / AU$80, which is great to see.

Interested in trying out an action cam? SJCAM has just announced the SJ30, an affordable adventure-centric camera with a unique dual-lens design.

Following on from 2024’s SJ20, the predictably named SJ30 features 8K video recording (but just for 20fps), 4K / 30fps, plus a host of other features that should appeal to beginner mixed-media content creators.

The IPX8-rated body of the SJ30 is waterproof to 17ft / 5m, which is increased to 98 ft / 30m with the camera fitted into an optional waterproof case. That’s right up there with some of the best action cameras on the market.

It also has a claimed battery life of seven hours – not a bad performance if it is able to live up to that number in the field. The caveat for this specification is that it's when pairing the SJ30 with the optional power handle, which can supply an additional 4,200mAh of juice. When used body-only, the maximum stated battery life drops to 150 minutes, shooting 4K clips in laboratory test conditions. This battery performance squares with the most obvious competitor, the budget-friendly Akaso Brave 8 Lite, which costs around the same.

The camera features a 2.51-inch touchscreen, which is able to flip through 180 degrees for shooting selfies and should come in handy for everyday vlogging needs. This is an upgrade from the SJ20’s 2.29-inch rear main touchscreen, which wasn’t articulated. Instead, on that previous model, users had to rely on a limited-capability 1.3-inch front screen. There’s no denying that the larger rear LCD offers an advantage in both size and resolution, but I wonder what impact the articulation might have on the rigidity of the body and its resistance to harder knocks while engaging in activities such as mountain biking.

That said, the press release points out the camera’s suitability for working 'in extreme conditions', across a temperature range from of -20°C to 60°C. So on paper at least, the SJ30 still seems built to take a beating, or at least some mild frostbite or sunstroke.

The headline feature, however, is the dual-lens design. The rationale behind this is that one lens sits in front of a 1 /2.0-inch sensor and the other, a marginally larger 1/1.8-inch chip that's fitted with a f/1.8 equivalent aperture. The latter is termed a ‘Starlight” sensor and the former, a “Daylight” sensor, allowing quality shots in all types of lighting.

Why it couldn’t simply have a single 1/1.8-inch sensor and the brighter lens, I’m not certain. If the larger aperture had been paired with the smaller sensor, I’d have understood that this was to allow more light gathering while keeping weight and costs down, but surely having two pairings is more expensive still?

Whatever, the night camera actually features a smaller aperture than the SJ20, which could be opened up to f/1.3. In that review, we weren’t that impressed by the low-light image quality, so it’ll be interesting to see if a new processor has allowed superior noise control.

Good value?

The SJ30 also makes use of a six-axis gyroscope and upgraded stabilization algorithms, as part of the upgraded SteadyMotion 2.0 system. I’m hoping this offers an improvement over the system used on the previous model, which didn’t do too much to help with camera shake in video footage. Another gyro-based function is the 45-degree horizon lock, which keeps footage level while riding over uneven terrain.

Although the SJ30 allows 8K video shooting, this is just to 20fps, an odd frame rate limitation that could cause issues if you hope to fit clips into the timeline of another video with conventional 24 fps or 30 fps frame rates.

No mention is given in the initial press material about photo resolution, although the SJ20 shot 20MP stills, so I’d be surprised in a camera of this level if this has decreased for the next generation. This falls below the DJI Osmo Action 4, which shoots 4K up to 120fps and 1080p up to 240fps and, being two generations old, is available for around the same price.

For improved sound quality, the newer camera includes a detachable wind guard and supports the SJCAM M4 wireless microphone, although we'll have to test this independently to see if its performance is up there with the best wireless mics. An interesting little feature is the magnetic quick-release mounting system for audio accessories, although how this performs riding along a bumpy trail, only time and a proper test will tell.

When you think of action cameras, SJCam might not be the first brand that comes to mind, but that hasn't stopped them from having lofty aspirations. The most attractive element of its action camera range is the price and the SJ30 stays on form, being available now for $264 / £195 (Australia pricing TBC). GoPro's stock has been dwindling of late, especially with increased competition from DJI and Insta360, but the OG action cam maker is back with a bang with its new Mission 1 series of action cams.

This is the biggest GoPro shake-up since it went digital 20 years ago, with three 'professional' models to choose from; the Mission 1, Mission 1 Pro and the curious Mission 1 Pro ILS — the latter features a Micro Four Thirds lens mount and is directly compatible with hundreds upon hundreds of lenses.

Alongside the cameras, GoPro will launch new accessories, including its first wireless mic kit. And in case you missed it, GoPro recently revealed its own gimbal, so its range of accessories are ever growing.

I spoke with GoPro ahead of the announcement, and its spokesperson articulated how the brand has looked to address many of the perceived drawbacks to its current action cams, previously headed up by the Hero 13 Black.

Through a new GP3 processor, GoPro says the Mission 1 series of cameras will have industry-leading battery life and thermal performance – yes, they won't overheat even when static in a warm room – while a new 1-inch sensor is much larger than the one used in Hero Black models and will no doubt improve image quality, especially in low light.

Pre-orders for each model begin on May 21 and they will be fully available from May 28, with pricing TBC. There's plenty to unpack here, so let's take a look at the key features and what to expect.

Mission 1 / Mission 1 Pro

First up, the Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro models. They are essentially the same, except that the Pro version (above, with lens hood) has a few extra capabilities, which I'll get onto.

Both cameras feature the new GP3 processor, a 1-inch 4:3 sensor and shoot 50MP stills and 8K 30fps / 4K 120fps open gate video (the 'Pro' version shoots 8K up to 60fps).

Previous GoPro action cams have offered great image quality in good light, but this new series looks to improve matters in low light with what GoPro says is 14 stops of dynamic range.

The bigger sensor and new processor also combine with higher 240Mbps bitrates, HLG-HDR and GP-Log 2 color profiles, plus 10-bit color depth for what should be the best quality images from a GoPro to date.

With a new Enduro 2 battery (which is backwards compatible with the Hero 13 Black), video record times are supposedly at least five hours at 1080p 30fps and three hours plus for 4K 30fps. They are also GoPro's toughest action cams yet, with waterproofing of 65ft / 20m and a bright 2.59-inch rear OLED screen.

It's slow-motion recording where the Pro version really stands out, thanks to its mind-boggling 960fps slo-mo video mode. This is available for 1080p recording, while the regular Mission 1 is limited to 240fps. At 4K resolution, the Mission 1 Pro can shoot down to 240fps, while the Mission 1 is capped to 120fps.

Audio recording looks impressive too; there a four internal mics and internal 32-bit float audio recording — these are very much pro features. And Bluetooth 5.3 lets you connect to compatible mics for clear audio, including GoPro's new wireless mic kit.

What you don't get with either model that the Hero 13 Black offers is the auto-detected lens mod setup — instead you just get the redesigned 159-degree field of view lens with hydrophobic coating so water droplets run off.

Mission 1 Pro ILS

Moving onto the ILS version — it packs the same photo and video skills as the Mission 1 Pro, the key difference being that it features a Micro Four Thirds lens mount, and as such it's only weatherproof and not fully waterproof like the fixed-lens Mission 1 Pro is.

This curious stroke of design means the ILS is more of a compact cinema camera than an action camera, though it does have a similar form factor to the other models.

Now I say 'curious' because there's a sensor size / lens mount format mismatch. The 1-inch sensor is smaller than the Micro Four Thirds sensor that the mount is designed for. A 1-inch sensor has a 2.7x crop factor, while Micro Four Thirds is 2x.

I don't think I've ever used a camera with a 1-inch sensor and Micro Four Thirds lens mount — I'm particularly intrigued by the ILS model and can't wait to give it a spin. That extra crop factor will limit lens choice for fans of a super wide-angle perspective, but on the flip-side the telephoto reach will be enhanced.

Perhaps making the ILS body a little larger and fitting it with a Micro Four Thirds sensor would have been the sensible thing to do, but there could be various upsides to this setup, and at the very least there are hundreds of lenses already available.

I asked GoPro if it plans to make its own lenses from the Mission 1 Pro ILS, but it predictably refused to comment.

There will be various Mission 1 series bundles on release, including a Grip Edition, Creator Edition and Ultimate Creator Edition, with more details to come in launch build up.

GoPro has just touched back down to earth following its NASA adventures on board the Artemis II — and now with its biggest product upgrades in decades, it very much feels like GoPro is back in the frame against DJI and Insta360. The Artemis II crew continue to send stunning images back to earth of key moments during its moon fly-by — not least of which include a solar eclipse from the far side of the moon.

Like other iconic images from the mission, the sight, never before seen by humans and described by crew member Victor Glover as 'the greatest gift' of the mission, was captured with the most surprising camera gear of all, at least to camera fans and so far as image quality goes.

Following the Lumix GH5 for take-off shots, the decade-old Nikon D5 DSLR for the incredible Earthset image and earth selfies with iPhone 17s, the solar eclipse was captured with an even older action camera, the GoPro Hero4 Black.

A full 12-years-old, the Hero4 Black was launched in 2014 and has long been discontinued, being replaced several times over, with the latest model being the Hero 13 Black.

It's one of a string of surprising gear choices, at least to camera fans who might have expected the multi-billion dollar mission to be equipped with the latest and greatest camera gear. So what do we know about the solar eclipse images and the gear used to record the epic sight?

I need a Hero

NASA describes the image named 'Eclipsed: A View from Orion', dated April 6, 2026, as the moon, backlit by the Sun during a solar eclipse, with the Orion visible in the foreground on the left. It also reveals the bright spot visible just below the moon’s bottom right edge to be Saturn, and the bright spot at the right edge of the image as Mars.

EXIF data on the NASA site reveals the camera gear and settings used to record the solar eclipse image. The Hero4 Black was set to manual white balance, auto exposure, ISO 800, and a 5-second exposure time.

The Hero4 Black was the first in the series of action cams with ProTune manual control, which has enabled a slow shutter speed, along with Bluetooth and WiFi support, though, of course, later models pack these features and more.

And it's not the only stunning image from the mission captured with the Hero4 Black. Unsurprisingly, GoPro has shared other key images on its Instagram (see above), pinpointing four moments.

We reached out to GoPro for comment about why the Artemis II mission opted for the 12-year-old action camera, and it said;

"Unfortunately, we are not in the position to go any deeper on these questions than what is publicly available — NASA has very strict guidelines on their brand, and we can’t speak on their behalf."

I'm sure the camera gear choices will be one of many questions posed to the crew upon its safe return to earth, and I, for one, will be keen to hear what they have to say.

For now, I'm marvelling at the incredible images shared so far, in the knowledge that there are plenty more images and moments yet to come.

Based on specs, the Osmo Action 4 might not be the best action camera on the market any more, but it's not far off from the performance of the latest models from GoPro, Insta360 and DJI. It's also more than enough camera for adventurous family vacations.

I've happily let my kids adopt that camera as their own. It can withstand rough treatment, and with its simple UI, it's a doddle for them to operate. As such, we have way more footage from our vacation than if it was just me behind the camera.

I had plans back on that vacation in 2023 to shoot some pro-quality photos and video with my $3,000 mirrorless camera, but the truth is that model it never got a look in. The action camera, on the other hand, went with us everywhere, including sandy beaches.

If you're looking for a camera that can go places you wouldn't dream of taking your phone or big camera, then an action camera is the ticket, and the Osmo Action 4 is the top value pick of the lot.

Earlier this month, GoPro announced its first new processor in five years, promising that it will power its next generation of cameras, and not just upgrades of the action cameras that it's known for.

Now we've had a sneak peek at a new direction GoPro could be taking its product portfolio through a teaser on its YouTube and Instagram — and there's no way that a humble action cam could have recorded the cinematic footage being showcased.

The previous announcement unpacked the new GP3 processor, GoPro's first since the GP2, which debuted in the Hero 10 Black in 2021, saying it will 'usher in a new era of professional-level image quality, low-light performance, resolution and frame rates for small form-factor camera markets, including action cameras, 360 cameras, vlogging cameras, and ultra-premium, compact cinema-grade cameras.'

That same announcement also told us to expect this next generation in Q2 2026, so that should be any time in the next three months.

GoPro already makes some of the best action cameras and 360 cameras, such as the Hero 13 Black and Max 2, respectively, whereas vlogging and compact cinema-grade cameras would be new areas for the action cam giant. Based on the teaser, a cinema-grade camera could come first.

What is GoPro cooking?

Besides the teaser caption 'Find your focus', all the information we have to base speculation on is the clips shot on a next-generation GoPro.

It's not clear if the clips are taken with the same mystery camera or are a collection from a range of new cameras. I'd hazard a guess that it's a compact cinema camera with a more versatile lens than the wide-angle type used in GoPro action cams, possibly an interchangeable lens camera.

Of course, a closeup of the moon can only be captured with a telephoto lens, a detailed shot of a human eye with a macro lens, while the ferns and raindrops shot has pretty decent bokeh (the out of focus dappled light in the background), suggesting either a larger sensor than those in current GoPro cameras, or a wide aperture telephoto lens.

To me, that fern and raindrops shot looks like it is made using a camera with a sensor size likely similar to Micro Four Thirds (that's half the size of full-frame), while the range of shots suggests an interchangeable lens camera — so we could be looking at GoPro's first video-focused mirrorless camera.

Note that none of the sample videos are action-based, suggesting that no action camera is making the footage. However, if such a camera were also equipped with the rugged, waterproof design of GoPro's action cameras, it could be a unique offering.

Macro, telephoto, and shallow depth of field effects will all be new kinds of imaging for a GoPro product, and I'm really keen to see what kind of cinematic camera is creating these shots, or if indeed they are a showcase of what multiple GoPro cameras are capable of.

Rumors are swirling that a DJI Pocket 4 is on its way, but don't let the promise of a shiny new action cam distract you from what's available right now — the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is currently cheaper than ever. Although it's nearly three years old now, the Pocket 3 is still an extremely capable camera. With features like a portrait filming mode and a 2-inch screen that's ideal for viewing a live camera feed, the Pocket 3 has proven hugely popular with vloggers and content creators in particular.

In our DJI Osmo Pocket 3 review, our tester called it "class-leading", and highlighted the "amazing video quality and beautiful slow-motion scenes". It was awarded a near-perfect 4.5 stars. TechRadar's camera editor Tim Coleman thinks it's well worth considering, even with the Pocket 4 on the horizon, commenting: "For many solo vloggers it will serve their needs perfectly, and for a much lower price than the latest models."

I've checked prices across leading retailers, and the best prices right now are at Amazon, but many options are available for only a few cents more at Best Buy. Typically, these cameras are sold in Essential, Standard, or Adventure Combos, with each bundle, respectively, including more accessories.

The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is a huge success story, seemingly in the hands of most creators and vloggers worldwide. And with good reason; the gimbal-mounted camera shoots super-smooth stabilized 4K video and packs neat features for solo creators, such as a swivel monitor for vertical or horizontal shooting and one-push selfies.

Yes, it's almost three years old now, and there's potentially the rumored Pocket 4 on the horizon — as a steady stream of leaks suggests — but the Pocket 3 is still a top performer today — and it just fell to a low price for the Amazon Spring Deal Days (and beyond, until at March 23 at least). The Standard Combo costs £329 at Amazon (was £389), while the Creator Combo costs £405 at Amazon (was £499).

Should it land, there's every chance the Pocket 4 will be a meaty upgrade of the Pocket 3, but I also expect it will also cost much more. And with the Pocket 3, you're already getting smartphone-beating stabilized video and a large 1-inch sensor for crisp-quality 4K content up to 60fps. Direct compatibility with DJI's superb wireless mics makes pro audio a cinch — and the Creator Combo comes with a DJI Mic 2 transmitter, making the bundle a bargain.

The Pocket 3 first launched for £489 for the Standard bundle, and has since dropped to £389 and now £329 in this sale price. I expect a potential Pocket 4 to launch for a similar initial price of around £500, so the Pocket 3 is likely to be the value pick.

A previous Pocket 4 leak seemingly revealed the design of the next-gen model to be largely the same, besides a couple of additional mystery buttons and an LED light (likely optional, and which could work with the Pocket 3).

There are also rumors that there will be two upcoming models, the Pocket 4 and a twin-lens Pocket 4 Pro. The New Camera reports that a Pro model will feature wide and telephoto lenses, 6K video up to 60fps, 4K video up to 240fps and support gesture control.

We're also expecting a wave of rival pocket gimbal cameras, from the Insta360 Luna to the Honor Robot phone revealed at MWC 2026

So where does this leave the Pocket 3, and should you buy it? I think there will be enough of a price gap for it to remain available, and for many solo vloggers it will serve their needs perfectly, and for a much lower price than the latest models.

For now, the Pocket 3 remains in top spot of my best vlogging cameras guide, and I recomend it in this deal, especially the Creator Combo.

There's a case to be made that the best phones are somewhat lacking in terms of innovation these days, but that's certainly not the case with the Ulefone RugOne Xsnap 7: one of its rear cameras can be popped out and used as a standalone action camera.

The handset was recently shown off at MWC 2026, and is scheduled to launch in the middle of the year. We also know that it'll feature a 6.67-inch AMOLED display, a MediaTek Dimensity 8400 5G chip, 12GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage.

While this clearly isn't going to compete with the best action cameras in terms of size or video quality, there's a certain appeal in having a unit like this built right into your phone. When the camera is detached, you can use the handset as a remote control and viewfinder, before docking it again to recharge and transfer the footage.

Of course, this adds quite a bit of bulk to the phone itself, but Ulefone isn't trying to avoid that. The RugOne Xsnap 7 also features a hefty 9,000 mAh capacity battery as well, so this should last you plenty of time between charges.

'Designed for adventurers'

It's not clear what the actual specs of the action camera are, but the information provided by Ulefone does say that the other two rear cameras are a 50MP main sensor and a 64MP 'night vision' lens. There's also a 32MP selfie snapper around the front.

"This isn't just a smartphone; it is the world's first rugged device featuring a detachable magnetic action camera unit," promises Ulefone. "Designed for adventurers who live to capture the moment, the Xsnap 7 Pro merges high-performance mobile tech with professional-grade action camera DNA."

Having the choice of an action camera and a phone camera when shooting photos and videos sounds genuinely useful – not just a gimmick – and so we'll be interested to see the final form of this handset when it appears (and of course the pricing).

Honor has recently unveiled a phone with a gimbal camera inside it, which extends on a robotic arm, but we haven't seen the action camera idea before. Perhaps the idea of a modular phone might be about to make a comeback.

GoPro Lit Hero: two-minute review

GoPro is a name that's synonymous with the action cam market, with the brand having largely been responsible for the explosion in popularity of such cameras over the past two decades. The brand has come a long way since its first Hero camera, a 35mm film-compatible wearable model released in 2004.

Now the likes of the GoPro Hero 13 Black and GoPro MAX 2, are considered amongst the best action cameras available, and largely dominate the market. And despite rumors that the company intends to kill off the Hero Black range, GoPro has dismissed the speculation. In other words, the GoPro family seemingly has a bright future ahead. In fact, as I completed this review, GoPro announced the next generation GP3 processor which will power a new wave of GoPros for 2026 and beyond.

That being said, the direction of the range can sometimes take an odd turn, and one such example is 2025’s GoPro Lit Hero, a sort of replacement for the GoPro Hero (2024), which was itself a weird compromise of price over specification.

You certainly can’t criticize the camera’s portability — it’s one of the smallest and lightest action cameras you can find anywhere, and there’s no danger of it weighing you down whilst out on a cycle ride or when travelling. Before hopping on a plane, there was none of the usual "Should I, shouldn’t I?" dilemma I often experience when choosing what to take on a trip, and it was a simple case of "Why not?" and throwing it into my camera bag.

There haven’t been many compromises in terms of build quality, and the Lit Hero feels rugged despite its diminutive size.

However, the tiny screen makes changing settings a challenge, while there isn’t a lot of room for camera controls on the body, making the handling experience frustrating at times. The screen itself isn’t always easy to use for image previews and is quite fiddly. It’s not a camera you can use in a hurry, which is a problem given the type of content you’d probably shoot with it.

There's very little in the way of manual controls: if you just want a point-and-shoot camera, you'll be fine, but if you hope to take control over the image-making process, there isn’t much here to satisfy a creative appetite.

Image quality is passable, but not mind-blowing. The camera struggles in low light thanks to its tiny imaging sensor, and despite offering 4K shooting, footage is anything but pro-level. Stills and video are sharp enough, but quickly lose detail as the sensitivity is increased. Meanwhile, colors are quite natural.

Overall, the GoPro Lit Hero is an affordable entry to the action cam market, and is a good take-anywhere choice. It won’t draw too much unwanted attention, or take up room in a bag. The problem is that too much has been stripped away to facilitate the small size. If you were expecting a simplified Hero Black, with similar properties, just smaller, you would probably be disappointed.

I'm not sure who the Lit Hero was designed for, specifically. Yes, it's an entry-level camera, so beginners might benefit. However, the naming convention is confusing, and I'm uncertain as to why such a powerful LED was incorporated. It's also still not that cheap, which I fear is more because of the brand name than any real premium advantages it offers.

As a result, the camera doesn't really hit any target market well. It sounds mean, but it might be best suited for filmmakers who want a camera that they're happy to risk destroying in the pursuit of extreme shooting angles. Otherwise, I can't think of anyone in particular to whom I'd recommend the Lit Hero.

GoPro Lit Hero: Design

The Lit Hero certainly looks the part, and has many of the traditional design markers of a GoPro product. The rear of the camera is dominated by the 1.76-inch LCD screen, with no physical buttons or controls whatsoever. This isn’t unusual for an action camera, and the same is true of a higher-end model like the DJI Osmo Action 6. The difference there is the screen size, which at 2.5 inches is much easier to interact with and operate.

The monitor on the Lit Hero is so small that my fingertips dwarfed some of the icons, making the precise selection of settings tricky when on the move and when outside in winter, digits numb from the cold. The active area of the screen is much smaller than the back of the camera, too, so there really isn’t much control real estate to be working with. If, like me, your hands are on the large side, it’s something to be aware of if the Lit Hero is on your shopping list.

It’s also not the most detailed LCD I’ve ever used, and it’s not ideal for judging the sharpness of captured images and footage. A few times, I thought I’d got the subject in focus, only to find the camera had back-focused upon opening the images and footage on the large screen of my laptop.

The touch function is useful (well, actually essential as it happens), but it isn’t hugely responsive, and it can take a few taps to get the desired menu to open, or multiple swipes with wet or muddy fingers to scroll through previews. Overall, it’s definitely a good idea to download the dedicated GoPro Quik app onto your phone, via which you can more accurately quality-control your footage.

The rest of the body is incredibly simple, which is both a negative and a positive. On one hand, this means you have to rely on the tiny screen to operate most of the camera’s functions, frozen fingers or not, but it also gives the Lit Hero a reassuringly unintimidating layout for beginners. There aren’t so many buttons that you might be worried about accidentally changing a setting you subsequently can’t figure out how to reset.

The Polycarbonate and TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) construction material is easy to grip, with a good amount of texture to provide friction even when the camera is wet. At no point did I worry about it slipping from my hands while using it handheld.

The other inescapable side-effect of such a small body is that when handling it, even just to remove it from a bag, it’s easy to touch the lens and leave behind fingerprints. It’s easily wiped clean, but this can be irritating.

GoPro Lit Hero: Performance

The camera itself is quick to start up, which was something I was concerned about, given the expected shrinking of the processor assembly to allow for the Lit Hero’s tiny dimensions. There’s very little delay between pressing the power button on the top of the camera and it being capture-ready.

Focus is also quick, at least as far as I could tell from my ‘hit rate’, looking back through captured images – looking at the screen, it’s very difficult to see the focusing in action, especially given the wide focal length. This was impressively maintained in low light and I didn’t notice a significant increase in out-of-focus shots in poor ambient lighting.

A big downside for me is the lack of integrated image stabilization. Rather than using an optical or sensor-shift IBIS system, you must first transfer footage to your smartphone using the GoPro Quik app, then apply algorithmic stabilization there. I’m not a fan of digital stabilization anyway, but not having it applied in-camera means you can’t preview how the final footage will actually look at the point of shooting. It’s a laborious extra step that slows things down.

An added frustration is that the connection between my phone and the Lit Hero was fairly unstable. It kept dropping out, meaning that live previews of what the camera could see using my phone screen were so pixelated as to be largely useless. The transfer speeds were also predictably sluggish. Yes, it’s possible this is due to the age of my handset, or even a model-specific compatibility issue, but I’d experienced no such issue when pairing it to the Insta360 X4 Air and Insta360 X5 the day before.

The ‘Lit’ element of the camera’s name stems from the powerful LED torch on the front of the body. It’s really the only instantly noticeable change from the GoPro Hero (2024). I wasn’t sure a camera could ever be defined by its built in flash or continuous light, but oh wow, did this thing get my attention.

It’s inexplicably bright. For the size of the camera, the light output is impressive if not completely overkill. It’s so bright at the maximum setting that I found it impossible to perform a piece to the camera with it shining in my eyes. Of course, it might come in useful in dark conditions, but I found it just looked ugly in most cases. I found it helped when shooting underwater clips in a sediment-filled stream, but the exposure fall-off is very obvious and unsightly.

On a positive note, the battery life is decent, and I could easily get around an hour and a half of continuous use out of it, in chilly outdoor temperatures, before it ran out of juice. Since the battery is integrated and can't be swapped, this is good news.

I found the body warmed up pretty rapidly when shooting longer video clips; not problematic, but a little uncomfortable when using it handheld. I found the more powerful DJI Osmo Action 6 heated up less quickly after prolonged use.

With such a small (1/2.8-inch) imaging sensor at its heart, the Lit Hero is limited in its light-gathering capacity. As such, noise levels are quite high at every sensitivity. There are very few manual controls, with no true PASM modes that allow the user to manipulate exposure settings, meaning you’re at the mercy of the camera’s own decisions, often resulting in grainy footage.

While it’s easier to hide in fast-moving video, the mushiness of detail is clearly visible in stills. In daylight conditions, results are actually quite sharp, but this isn’t maintained for long as ambient light falls.

The autoexposure system is fairly dependable, and it was able to quickly assess each scene during my testing and correctly adjust the parameters to prevent obvious overexposure. Similarly, the auto white balance does a good job of keeping colors natural, even under mixed lighting. This is all good news since there’s little opportunity to amend these settings yourself.

I’d equate the experience and resulting images to those from a basic smartphone or compact camera – I wouldn’t recommend the Lit Hero for ‘serious’ still photography work, but it’s good enough for off-the-cuff content creation and vacation shots.

There isn’t much latitude for post-processing work either. Shadows can be blocked quickly, probably because the camera seems to be biased towards underexposure to keep the highlights in check, but it’s not a good idea to lift these too far. There is no Log mode so color grading must be applied to the pre-processed video, which can break down the tones if pushed too far.

How I tested the GoPro Lit Hero

While I always like to subject action cameras to some degree of punishing conditions, I like to use them as I might as part of an average shoot for which it was designed. As such, I don't make a habit of dropping them out of windows or running them over with a Jeep.

Instead, I took the GoPro Lit Hero with me on several outdoor shoots, in a range of weather, from rainy to full sun. I used the camera to capture behind-the-scenes content of my shoots and environmental imagery. This included submerging it in a stream and getting it down and dirty in muddy undergrowth.

I left the camera recording for extended durations to test battery life and heat management. I shot both still photos and video, then processed these in Adobe Lightroom and DaVinci Resolve to see how much detail I could recover from the extreme ends of the tonal range. Images shown here are the unprocessed out-of-camera Jpgs and video (cut together in the case of the latter).

The popular action camera has only been £10 cheaper, which makes this one of the best deals we've ever seen. And if you're looking for a camera to capture your spring and summer adventures, then this Osmo Action is an absolute bargain.

Today's best DJI action camera deal

Four out of five stars was what we gave this action camera. You can read why in our full DJI Osmo Action 4 review, but if you're strapped for time, let me give you the rundown.

The 1/1.3-inch sensor delivers improved 10-bit 4K video quality and a D-Log colour profile. These qualities elevate image output and make it possible to perform extensive colour corrections. The larger sensor is also brilliant in low light, picking up more detail and with less noise.

Another standout feature of the Osmo Action 4 is the magnetic mounting system that enables mounts to be swapped out in a matter of seconds. Our reviewer called them "hassle-free mounts" and said they are superior to the mounting systems on many alternative models.

GoPro has just announced the GP3, a new custom imaging processor for its cameras. The GP3 is a 5-nanometer System-on-Chip (SoC) that the company claims delivers more than twice the pixel processing power of its predecessor the GP2 – the chip that has been doing the heavy lifting in every GoPro camera since the Hero 10 Black back in 2021.

Perhaps the GP3's most notable feature is a dedicated AI Neural Processor Unit (NPU), built specifically for pixel processing and low-light image performance. Alongside that, the GP3 features dedicated cores for scene recognition and subject detection, enabling cameras to analyze their surroundings and automatically adjust settings in real time accordingly. Think of it as the camera becoming considerably smarter about recognizing what it's looking at – whether that's a dimly lit street, a fast-moving subject or a wide open landscape.

Low-light performance appears to be a major focus area. In the press release accompanying the announcement, GoPro repeatedly highlights it as one of GP3's headline improvements, and it's easy to see why – it's an area where GoPro cameras powered by the GP2 have historically struggled against cameras from DJI and Insta360. In our review of the GoPro Max 2 360 camera, for instance, we found it to be far less capable after dark than its close competitors the DJI Osmo 360 and Insta360 X5.

Beyond image quality, the chip's 5-nanometer architecture and power-efficient design are expected to deliver better battery life and thermal performance. That's promising news for anyone who's watched a GoPro choke and shut down in the heat of a long recording session.

We do need another Hero

And there’s one more exciting detail mentioned at the end of the press release: GP3-powered cameras are set to debut in Q2. That's right – this spring. That means at least one new GoPro camera is imminent, and I think it could well be the next flagship action camera, which will presumably be called the GoPro Hero 14 Black.

2025 was the first year that didn't see a new Hero Black model released in a decade, but Rick Loughery, GoPro's SVP Global Marketing and Communications, told us that the Hero Black story was definitely not over. So we know a new Hero Black is coming – and this might well be it.

One might speculate that GoPro chose not to release a Hero Black in 2025 because they were developing a new model built around the GP3 – one that could compete with rival action cameras like the DJI Osmo Action 6 and Insta360 Ace Pro 2 when it comes to low-light capabilities. Either way, you can expect at least a teaser surrounding GoPro's next camera or cameras very soon.

A new Hero 14 Black feels like a fairly safe bet, but the GoPro announcement also says the next gen processor is positioned to 'usher in a new era of professional-level image quality, low-light performance, resolution and frame rates for small form-factor camera markets, including action cameras, 360 cameras, vlogging cameras, and ultra-premium, compact cinema-grade cameras.'

GoPro has already covered the action camera and 360 camera markets, but that statement suggests it's exploring new vlogging and cinema-grade pocket cameras too, and could mean 2026 is its active year to date. SJCAM C400: one-minute review

The SJCAM C400 is an ultra-compact action camera that comes with an optional handle accessory, transforming it from a tiny wearable cam into a handheld vlogging setup. Starting at around $160 / £155 (without the handle), it undercuts the latest offerings from DJI and Insta360 by a significant margin — but unfortunately, you get what you pay for.

The camera itself is charmingly small and lightweight, making it easy to wear on a pendant or fix to a hat for POV filming. It includes a built-in touchscreen, which is a huge boon compared to similarly sized rivals like the DJI Osmo Nano or Insta360 Go cameras, which lack this feature.

When slotted into the handle, the C400 takes on a whole new character, becoming a comfortable handheld vlogging camera with a rotatable screen that works for both horizontal and vertical content, with the added benefit of an extra battery.

However, image quality is where the C400 seriously stumbles. Despite supporting 4K at 30fps and various video modes, the footage is poor, with an odd combination of over-sharpening and under-detail, plus prominent muddy digital artifacts. Still photos don't fare much better, with detail falling off drastically towards the frame edges. When compared directly to footage from an Insta360 GO Ultra or DJI Osmo Nano, the difference is stark — and it becomes immediately clear why those cameras cost a little more.

Audio quality doesn't help matters. While the built-in microphone copes indoors or in calm conditions, it struggles with wind noise, and there's no option to connect an external mic.

The digital stabilization works, but in an artificial way that draws attention to itself, while enabling horizon leveling drastically reduces resolution. There's also no built-in waterproofing or magnetic mounting — both missed opportunities on a camera this size.

On the plus side, battery life is impressive, with the camera managing around 190 minutes of 4K recording on its own, and much, much longer when docked in the handle. I managed to get 495 minutes of recordings with the handle, in fact.

In short, the C400 offers an appealingly compact form factor and decent battery life at a bargain price, but its poor image and audio quality make it hard to recommend unless budget is your absolute priority. I'd recommend checking out one of my recommended alternatives in my best action cameras and best vlogging camera guides.

The SJCAM C400 is available in three bundles: the C400 Pocket (just the camera with no handle or accessories); the C400 (which includes the handle); and the C400 Vlogging Bundle (which includes the handle, a mini tripod, a pendant mount, a 64GB microSD card and a carry case). Prices vary wildly depending on the bundle and the country you're shopping in, and seem to be fluctuating too, so I would suggest shopping around to ensure you get the best price for whatever package you're after.

In terms of value the camera seems like a bargain in comparison to the latest models from rival companies like DJI and Insta360. But considering its level of performance, I think you should seriously consider spending a little more elsewhere, particularly if you value image quality.

SJCAM C400: specs

SJCAM C400: design

The C400 package I was sent for review has two main components: the C400 camera itself and a handle accessory that incorporates controls, an extra touchscreen, a tripod mounting thread and an additional battery.

The main C400 camera is charmingly tiny and lightweight, if not quite as small as the DJI Osmo Nano or some of the Insta360 Go editions; if you really must have the tiniest, lightest 4K action cam, the C400 isn't it. Still, for POV filming purposes I found it compact enough to wear on a pendant around my neck, or fixed to my hat, without causing any bother whatsoever.

The camera unit has a small touchscreen (which is a huge boon – you don't get one on the DJI Osmo Nano or Insta360 Go), built-in microphone, microSD card slot for storage, and a tiny button that handles power and shutter duties. Sadly, unlike some rivals, it doesn't include a magnet for fixing it easily to metal surfaces, which is a missed opportunity.

Another missed opportunity is waterproofing, which I'd expect on a small action camera. Sadly, it's not mentioned anywhere on the spec or features sheet, although an optional waterproof case (with a 30m depth rating) is available.

When the C400 is slotted into the handle it takes on a whole new character, transforming from mini cam into a handheld vlogging camera somewhat reminiscent of the DJI Osmo Pocket series. The handle has a pleasingly comfortable design, and its good-sized rotatable screen caters to both horizontal and vertical content, and it also gives recording time a boost with its own supplementary battery.

I preferred using the camera in this arrangement than on its own, due to it being easy to hold and control – even if it clearly lacks the physical gimbal-based stabilization of DJI's Pocket range.

Additionally, it works as a wireless remote control for the camera, with a range of around 30 feet.

A quick word on the companion app: it's pretty good! Once it was installed and I'd established a Wi-Fi link between the C400 and my iPhone, I was able to remotely control the camera and download photos and videos wirelessly. Getting the phone and camera linked up the first time was a bit of a struggle, but once the connection was set up I was able to simply re-connect by scanning a QR code on the camera's screen.

SJCAM C400: Performance

The camera supports 4K video capture at up to 30fps, 2K at up to 60fps, and 1080p at up to 120fps (for slow-motion playback), plus H.264 and H.265 compression, a 'wide dynamic range' mode and a high-bitrate recording option.

Despite selecting all of these in an attempt to see the C400 performing at its best, I found image quality to be disappointingly poor even in good outdoor lighting, and even worse indoors.

You can view my sample video below to get a clearer picture (no pun intended), but the image seems to me to be a curious mix of being simultaneously over-sharpened and under-detailed, with distracting, muddy digital artifacts very prominent.

Still photos didn't impress either, with detail falling off massively towards the edges of the frame – and there's a huge amount of wide-angle distortion that doesn't appear to be correctable outside of post-production manual tweaking.

The two forms of digital image stabilization on offer — general and horizon leveling — do work, but they do so in an artificial way that really draws attention to the fact that they're working. Using horizon leveling also reduces the resolution quite drastically.

When compared to the videos straight out of an Insta360 GO Ultra or DJI Osmo Nano, the difference is stark – and it's immediately clear where that extra money goes.

Audio quality is passable in calm conditions, but as my video illustrates, the built-in microphone doesn't cope well with wind noise at all — and there's no way to connect an external microphone to better capture sound. So vloggers may have to record their audio separately, then sync it in post-production, which is hardly the sort of simplicity you'd hope for.

There's better news on the battery life front, at least, and I was impressed by the C400's stamina. To test it, I set video quality to 4K at 30fps and left the C400 (without its handle) recording. It managed to capture around 190 minutes of footage before the battery died. When docked inside the handle, it of course lasts even longer, and in my test it lasted 495 minutes (over eight hours!) in total.

I tested the SJCAM C400 for around a week, using it to record videos and photos both handheld and using some of the accessories included with my review sample. The sample was supplied by SJCAM, and included not only the camera and handle, but a waterproof case and range of mounting options such as a magnetic pendant. I tested all its main functions including electronic image stabilization and battery life, before transferring all photos and videos to my iPhone and subsequently MacBook Air for close inspection.

So, what's going on with all the apparent DJI camera clones appearing in US stores? From action cameras to drones, near one-to-one rip-offs of DJI's most beloved products seem to be popping up everywhere – and the company itself doesn't seem overly bothered by the situation.

You don't have to look particularly hard to find these clones, and it doesn't take a master detective to spot the similarities. The Xtra Muse vlogging camera, for instance, appears to be a DJI Osmo Pocket 3 in all but name, with The Verge's teardown showing not only that the two products share the same hardware but the same software – albeit with all references to "DJI" removed; the teardown even found that some Osmo Pocket 3 accessories work perfectly well with the Muse. Likewise, the Xtra Edge appears to be little more than a re-skinned DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro, while the Osmo Nano lookalike Xtra Atto popped up recently.

The maker of these clones, Xtra Technology, popped into existence recently and describes itself as a "dynamic and independent start-up company registered in Delaware (DE), United States. We are founded with a team of industry professionals from leading innovative companies, who have deep expertise in imaging technology and consumer electronics."

On the drone front, SkyRover, another recently founded company (this time based in Hong Kong, a short drive from DJI's HQ in Shenzhen, China) that claims to have been " founded by a small team of engineers with backgrounds at DJI", has been selling consumer drones called the X1 and S1 that very closely resemble DJI's Mini 4 Pro and Mini 4K respectively. While there are some minor differences, the essential hardware and software technology, and flight and camera performance, appear to be virtually identical.

The solution to DJI's US troubles?

While DJI is a hugely powerful player in the drone and stabilizer markets, and a strong competitor in action cameras, the Chinese company currently finds itself in a tricky spot when it comes to the US market. Not only does it have a complex and costly tariff situation to navigate, but it has also come under specific scrutiny from successive US administrations regarding purported links to the Chinese military and government.

This scrutiny has culminated in DJI (along with all foreign drone companies) being placed on the US Federal Communications Commission's "Covered List", effectively banning all future DJI products from the US market.

The easiest conclusion to reach when looking at Xtra and SkyRover's products, and then considering DJI's current position with regards to the US market, is that the company is effectively behind these clones itself, and has set up shell companies in an attempt to bypass restrictions, reduce import costs and keep its products selling in the States.

If that's the case, DJI certainly isn't telling. We reached out to the company's PR team for comment, but (rather unsurprisingly) received nothing definitive back, except for the following statement from a spokesperson:

"While we can’t comment on non‑DJI products, DJI will continue to focus on empowering creators, businesses, and public safety organizations worldwide with safe, innovative, and accessible technologies. The company remains committed to the US market and will continue to advocate for our US-based operators to government agencies, lawmakers, and the administration."

I think the most interesting thing about this statement is what it isn't: a denial. It would be easy for DJI's spokesperson to state that the company has no links to Xtra or SkyRover, but they pointedly don't.

What remains to be seen is if these apparent shell companies can succeed in bringing DJI-style products into the US, avoiding the FCC's de facto ban and the worst of the US administration's tariffs. On the drone front, especially, there is no US-based company currently capable of competing with DJI (and, by extension, SkyRover) on performance and price, so consumers will be crying out for a way to get their hands on affordable, high-quality camera drones. Perhaps this will be the way they do it.

We have Insta360 to thank for some of the best action cameras in the business – as well as several other innovative gadgets – and it looks very much like we've got a couple more cameras from the company to look forward to in the near future.

Insta360 CEO Jingkang Liu has taken to Chinese social media site Weibo (via PetaPixel) to share a teaser image, alongside the caption "go to a new focal segment". That sounds like an upcoming camera to us.

As pointed out by The New Camera, there are actually two unknown cameras in this picture: the camera that we can see being used to frame a photo, and a second camera that's visible through the viewfinder of the first one.

We're well used to rumors and teases and hints for Insta360 products at this stage, but this is a sort of hybrid combination of an official unveiling and a product leak that we don't often see, and we're rather intrigued as to what it could be pointing to.

Camera spotting

The first camera in this image – the one that's being used to frame and take a photo – looks unlike anything Insta360 currently makes. PetaPixel speculates that it might be a compact, fixed-lens camera along the lines of a Canon PowerShot.

We can see some controls around the side of the viewfinder, which include buttons for toggling between video and photo modes, and a playback button for reviewing videos and photos captured by whatever camera this is.

As for the second camera that the first mystery camera is taking a picture of, The New Camera suggests this is a pocket vlogging camera along the lines of the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 (with the DJI Osmo Pocket 4 waiting in the wings).

That latter camera is probably closer to being launched – perhaps as early as February or March – whereas the compact digital camera may still be in the prototype stage. It seems that it won't be too long before we have more Insta360 cameras to enjoy.

Just a PSA, folks: the excellent GoPro Hero 13 Black currently sits at a tempting price of $319 (was $429) at Adorama right now, but there are only a few days left to get your hands on this deal at the retailer.

The GoPro Hero 13 Black has only been cheaper than this one time, and that was all the way back in December 2024 – just a few months after this model was released. Today's price, while not quite as good (it reached $299 before), is the same as the one on Black Friday just passed, so it's a fantastic deal in its own right.

GoPro is a great choice, even with strong rivals

The Hero 13 Black is definitely a relatively iterative upgrade from the 12, sharing the same sensor (5.3K video and 27MP photos) as the previous few generations. It's also sitting in an increasingly competitive field, with compelling options from rival brands like DJI, Osmo, and Insta360 coming to the fore in recent years.

The Hero 13 Black impressed us, however, with the excellent range of accessories that are available. It's a key advantage because no other brand (yet) boasts such a range of useful additions. This includes things like Ultra-Wide, Macro, and Anamorphic lens mods, as well as plenty of ND filters. The Hero 13 also incorporates a magnetic mount with a useful auto-detect feature to make everything super-easy to use.

Dreame began life as a robot vacuum brand, before going on to add other air-focused appliances like manual vacuums and hair dryers to its roster. It's only been around since 2017/18, but in that time it has established itself as a major player in these markets – it features prominently in both my best cordless vacuum and best robot vacuum rankings.

So I was excited to see what Dreame would be showcasing at CES 2026. I was expecting a new robot vacuum, perhaps some innovative air purifiers. What I was not expecting was for Dreame to announce its entry into literally every corner of the home. I'm not exaggerating – if you can think of a home appliance, Dreame now has one in its lineup.

It has a TV, soundbars, a projector, a surround sound speaker setup. There's a Dreame action camera, smart rings, smart glasses and a smartwatch. It has smart lights in all shapes and sizes. It has security cameras, smart locks and motion sensors.

There are fridges, a dishwasher, a microwave and a selection of ovens. There are air fryers, coffee machines, and a stand mixer. It has a washing machine, tumble dryer, and steamer. There's a chainsaw and a hedge trimmer, electric toothbrushes, razors, IPL machines and an LED face mask.

It's still at prototype stage, but there was even a car sitting incongruously on the Dreame stand.

The vision, according to the press release, is to evolve from "a standalone smart device brand to a comprehensive provider of connected lifestyles with an ecosystem now covering the home, garden, outdoors, and on the move". The tagline it's going with is "All dreams in one Dreame", which makes no sense at all.

Too far, too soon?

I've tested a number of Dreame gadgets, and have almost always been impressed, but I'm wary of this latest expansion. It all just seems too fast and too wide-reaching for it to have been done with the required care and expertise. The difficulty I've had in getting any information about the individual products I was most interested in hasn't reassured me any further.

Previously, Dreame's category expansions have made sense. There's crossover between the mechanics of a vacuum cleaner and a hair dryer, for instance. I can see how a brand that knows its way around a robot vacuum could also make a great lawnbot.

But I'm struggling to see how those skills might translate into coffee machines or TVs – both categories that are highly specific, and which require specialist knowledge and skills to excel in. The same goes for things like smartwatches and action cameras.

Of course, I haven't tested any of the new gadgets yet – I've only seen them displayed and demoed, which isn't a reliable way to judge any product. The proof will be in the testing, and I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

DJI and Insta360 could have a new rival on their hands, after a new Chinese company called Leaptic teased a modular action camera that will be unveiled at CES this week.

The teaser on X (formerly Twitter) reveals the silhouette of the '8K AI tiny action camera', and it looks a lot like the profile of the modular DJI Osmo Nano.

Like the Insta360 Go 3S before it, the Osmo Nano is a truly tiny thumb-sized action cam which can fit in tight spaces for creative angles and worn as a body camera, but being modular it also attaches magnetically to a pod with a screen for a traditional action camera design.

Leaptic's offering appears to have a strikingly similar design to the Osmo Nano, but we know precious little else about it other than will shoot video at a higher 8K resolution.

Another post shared on Instagram in September 2025 seemingly reveals Leaptic's AI action camera, if indeed this is the same camera, calling it a 'next-gen AI action camera redefining sports filmmaking', armed with a 'disruptive end-to-end AI concept'.

It says the camera will weigh just 35g, is equipped with voice control, plus it features what sounds like 'AI' subject and action detection and auto editing to speed workflow.

This all sounds intriguing, and with CES kicking off tomorrow on January 6, we'll soon have more concrete detail about the tiny 8K action camera from the horse's mouth, and if indeed it has what it takes to break into this competitive space.

Have a read through our DJI Osmo Action 6 review, and you'll see we were very impressed with the action camera – it got four-and-a-half stars out of five – but the device is now even better, as its latest firmware upgrade ups the maximum video recording resolution to 8K.

News of the update was posted to Instagram by DJI (via PetaPixel), and you can see from the post that that 8K recording is now available at 30 frames per second, at a 16:9 aspect ratio. It's a pretty sweet free upgrade for owners of the camera.

There's more in the update too: it also adds the ability to upload footage direct from the camera to various cloud services, including OneDrive and Google Drive, or a personal NAS. This can be done automatically or manually as needed.

Owners of the action camera now have access to new film-style tone presets in Photo mode as well, plus additional customization options, and a few other minor tweaks (the grid overlay in Custom mode has been tweaked for the better, for example).

Better than ever

The DJI Osmo Action 6 was already one of the best action cameras on the market, and these new upgrades improve it even further. It offers excellent photo and video quality, in a wide range of lighting conditions, and an easy-to-use interface.

"With the Osmo Action 6, DJI cements its position as a real threat to GoPro's dominance in the action camera market," we wrote in our review. "The Osmo Action 6 is yet another step in the right direction for DJI."

If you own one of these cameras, you can get the new update through the DJI Mimo app – it should appear automatically as a prompt on screen inside the app, when it's ready (firmware 01.02.05.21 is the version you're looking out for).

It's another reminder that software updates don't just have to be about bug fixes: they can also bring with them genuinely useful improvements that add extra value for money when companies invest enough time and effort into them.

If you own a DJI drone, camera gimbal or other product in the US, you're probably feeling a little anxious right now – and understandably so. Today, December 23 2025, marks a critical deadline that's set to fundamentally affect your ability to buy new DJI products – but the situation is more nuanced than the alarming headlines might suggest.

Under the FY25 National Defense Authorization Act, Congress set December 23, 2025 as the deadline for a national security audit of DJI. That audit was not completed (and according to DJI, it never even started because no US agency was ever assigned to conduct it, despite the company all but begging for something to happen), and thus the company – along with all foreign drone companies – has now been added to the Federal Communications Commission's "Covered List." That's bureaucratic speak for a de facto ban on new DJI products entering the US market.

The good news for you as a US-based DJI user is that you'll still be able to use any drone or gimbal you already own. Your DJI Mic 2 won't suddenly stop recording, your DJI Mini 4K won't be grounded, and your DJI Osmo Mobile 6 won't become a paperweight. That's the most important thing to understand amid all the uncertainty.

What a ban would (and wouldn't) mean

The practical implications depend on how the ban gets implemented, and that's where things get complicated. In the best-case scenario – if there's no retroactive enforcement – DJI wouldn't be able to launch new products because they require FCC certification. However, products that have already certified and are in the retail pipeline could still be sold. That means you'd have a window to snag that DJI product you've been eyeing, though inventory would at some point – and perhaps quickly – dry up.

The worst-case scenario would see a retroactive ban, where the FCC revokes existing product certifications. In that situation, DJI products would be pulled from store shelves immediately, and no new stock could be imported. Again, this wouldn't affect products you already own – just the ability to buy new ones.

Early news reports on the ban suggest we're in a 'best-case-scenario' situation, with products already on sale and those in use unaffected. In fact, it appears that DJI and other drone companies can continue to export previously approved models to the US for sale.

Servicing gets trickier under either scenario. DJI's Head of Global Policy, Adam Welsh, explained in a recent interview with Faruk at iPhonedo (you can watch it on YouTube) that while repairs using imported parts should still be possible, warranty replacements could become problematic if DJI can't bring new units into the country. That's something to consider if you're planning a major purchase, as is the fact that existing devices could be prevented from receiving software updates, or have restrictions placed on their connectivity.

The ban appears to affect DJI's entire product lineup including drones, gimbals, microphones, action cameras and filmmaking equipment. For hobbyists and professionals who've built their creative workflows around DJI gear, that's a big concern.

Looking at the bigger picture

DJI maintains that this situation stems from geopolitical tensions and economic protectionism rather than any actual shady activities on its part. The company points to multiple security audits since 2017 which found no evidence of data concerns, and a recent court ruling that rejected most of the Department of Defense's allegations about DJI's ties to the Chinese government and military.

The company released the following statement today:

DJI is disappointed by the Federal Communications Commission’s action today to add foreign‑made drones to the Covered List. While DJI was not singled out, no information has been released regarding what information was used by the Executive Branch in reaching its determination.

As the industry leader, DJI has advocated for an open, competitive market that benefits all US consumers and commercial users, and will continue to do so. DJI products are among the safest and most secure on the market, supported by years of reviews conducted by U.S. government agencies and independent third parties. Concerns about DJI’s data security have not been grounded in evidence and instead reflect protectionism, contrary to the principles of an open market.

Today’s development will not affect customers who already own DJI products. These existing products can continue to be purchased and operated as usual. The FCC’s fact sheet also indicates that new products may, in the future, be cleared for launch based on determinations made by the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security.

DJI remains committed to the U.S. market. We are deeply grateful to users across the country who spoke up to share how DJI technology supports their work and their communities. We will keep our community informed as more information becomes available.

The economic implications of a ban, particularly a retroactive 'worst-case-scenario' ban, are huge, with DJI's estimates suggesting that US$116bn in US economic activity and 460,000 jobs are connected to its products. Two-thirds of drone service providers say they'd have to close without access to DJI equipment, and domestic manufacturers aren't currently producing alternatives for most consumer and commercial applications.

For now, we're still in wait-and-see mode. At the time of writing the ban has been in effect for a matter of hours, and quite how it affects existing products is yet to become clear. What we can say with confidence is this: if you own DJI gear, you'll be able to keep using it, regardless of what has happened today.

Smartphone camera technology has come on leaps and bounds, but if you really want to elevate your game, then it's hard to beat a gimbal with a built-in camera. Enter the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 at Best Buy for $529.99 (was $799.99).

With leaks appearing all over the internet for the Osmo Pocket 4, it's no surprise that we're seeing such generous price cuts like this one. It's still one of the best on the market with unbelievable stabilization, 4K resolution, slow-motion capabilities, and a slew of other useful features.

I reviewed the gimbal back in 2023 and would have given it a full five stars had it not been for the high price. Thankfully, with this outstanding deal, that is no longer a problem.

Today's best DJI Osmo Pocket 3 deal

I reviewed the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 and fell in love with it immediately. Hence the 4.5 stars. I said it "delivers amazing video quality as well as beautiful slow-motion scenes" and the "all-new 1-inch sensor boosts the image quality in low light". This is not just a fancy gimbal; it's an excellent camera.

I also loved the new portrait filming mode, which enables on-board filming in this orientation. Social media content creators will find this handy little feature incredibly useful and a big timesaver. Speaking of time saving, the Osmo Pocket 3 also includes automatic face tracking and dynamic framing, which means the gimbal takes care of that so you don't have to.

If you're looking for one of the best action cameras instead, then we'd recommend the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro or the GoPro Hero 13 Black review.

The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is a huge success story – it's a tiny, gimbal-mounted video camera that sits in the top spot of my best vlogging cameras guide and is seemingly in the hands of every content creator. Recently, however, its makers have had to navigate several US sales hurdles, namely tariffs and an outright US ban, which might actually kick in on December 23.

You can still buy the Pocket 3 for now, but a familiar-looking alternative has quietly appeared, and it costs much less today – the Xtra Muse is $419 at Amazon (was $699).

To put that into perspective, the Pocket 3 launched in 2023 for $519, but its full price has risen to $799 today. There are also Cyber Monday deals for the Pocket 3, see below, but it still costs 25% more than the Xtra Muse.

Today's best Xtra Muse deal

To be clear, I haven't personally used the Xtra Muse, and DJI has neither confirmed nor denied that it's effectively a disguised version of the Pocket 3.

What we do have is a teardown of the Muse from The Verge, which compared it to DJI's vlogging camera. The Verge suggests that the cameras are essentially the same in every way and compatible with the same accessories.

There's the same 1-inch sensor, gimbal-stabilized 4K 120p video, swivel monitor, and single push switch to selfie mode. The Pocket 3 is a dream vlogging camera, and by extension, the Xtra Muse may be, too.

It's not the only Xtra product either – the Edge Pro bears a striking resemblance to the DJI Osmo Pocket 5 Pro, although those two cameras are basically the same price on Cyber Monday.

The Fujifilm X half was for me one of 2025's stand out cameras; a charming and unique digital compact that reimagines the half-frame film camera experience. It's a healthy dose of photography fun, but many felt it was a little overpriced at launch. Cyber Monday brings good news, therefore, and that's the first significant X half deal; the Fujifilm X half for $599 at Adorama (was $849) / Fujifilm X half for £499 at Amazon (was £699) – that's 29% off.

It's not for everyone, but if you want a dinky compact with unique film photography-inspired features, then the X half is well worth a look, especially at this new price. Today's best Fujifilm X half deals

I enjoyed the Fujifilm X half so much that I wrote about it multiple times, including my X half review where I gave it a 4 out of 5 rating, and an ode to its film-roll mode which is one of the cutest camera features I've played with in years.

A word of warning; don't take the X half too seriously. It's not designed to be a serious photography tool, but a charming and outright fun camera. For example, the sensor is vertical format for the authentic half-frame photography experience, plus there's no RAW format stills, only 18MP JPEGs.

What we get instead are unique film photography-inspired features, such as the film-roll mode which locks in your color profile and deactivates the digital display until you use up the 'roll' – you only see the photos later once they are 'developed' in the mobile app. There's also a secondary LCD screen which can display your film roll (color profile) selection. It's all impossibly charming.

Design wise, the camera is properly dinky and weighs just 240g, and features a 1-inch 20MP sensor and fixed 32mm f/2.8 lens. If you want a 'proper' Fujifilm camera then look elsewhere, but for a little analog-inspired fun, the X half is the ticket. I highly recommend you read my review to find out more, and act on this deal while it lasts!

DJI is seemingly intent on pricing out the competition – take the excellent Osmo 360 for $357.49 at Amazon US or just £296 at Amazon UK. It's DJI's first 360 camera that goes shoulder to shoulder with the Insta360 X5 and GoPro Max, and with this price cut it has every chance of becoming a best-seller.

Ot how about the Mini 4K for $239 at Amazon US / the Mini 4K Fly More Combo for £339 at Amazon UK? That's a deal worth considering especially if you're in the US where a DJI ban looms – a December 23 date has been set. Put simply, this could be your last chance to grab DJI deals before the products are stripped from stores.

Yes, DJI has since released the Osmo Action 5 and Osmo Action 6, but its product launches are so regular that cameras two iterations back, such as the Osmo Action 4, are still worth recommending today. After all, the Action 4 is only two years old and shoots some of the crispest 4K video you'll get from a tiny action cam, supported by some of the best waterproofing in the business – trust me I've personally tested it.

Today's best DJI Osmo Action 4 deals

Why am I recommending an action cam that is two iterations old? Naturally, price is a factor – there are huge discounts on DJI's former flagship action cam so it can be had for much less than the Action 5 Pro and recent Action 6. And at two years old, it's actually not that old at all, and still measures up well today.

I was deeply impressed by the 4K-shooting action cam, as you can see in my DJI Osmo Action 4 review. In fact, I also wrote about why it's my favorite camera to take on vacation and it consequently secured a spot in my best action cameras guide, until it was replaced by its successor.

The fact that it went up against the GoPro Hero 12 Black and Insta360 Ace Pro back then, with better 18m waterproofing and a larger image sensor for better low-light performance, and those cameras are still much pricier today, says it all really – you won't get a better action cam for the money.

Still, if you'd like to find more options, I've included a couple of 360 camera deals below which are likewise older models that have been heavily discounted for Black Friday.

Black Friday is the perfect time to grab the best deal on a GoPro – I should know because I've been tracking prices for the last three years. This year, I've found price cuts on almost all of the models I'd actually recommend from personal experience, including the Hero 13 Black, brand new Max 2, plus older models such as the original Max. I've rounded up those deals below.

My top pick of all the GoPro deals right now is the Hero 13 Black Extended Power bundle for $349.99 at Amazon in the US (was $499.99) / or for just £299.99 at GoPro in the UK (was £469.99). You get a whole load of extra accessories in this bundle for very little markup from the standard camera-only bundle.

I’ve only included GoPro deals that I recommend, and I'm updating this page regularly throughout the Black Friday period with the latest prices and deals, because they are changeable and I want you to get the best deal. I’ve never seen a price cut of this magnitude for a 360 camera – the GoProMax for £149 at Amazon (was £349). That’s £200 off GoPro’s original 5.3K twin lens-shooter, which makes it the UK’s most affordable 360 camera.

That’s even cheaper than GoPro’s budget brand rival, the Akaso 360 for £169 at Amazon (was £199). Despite being six years old now, the Max for £149 is a steal, especially considering the twin sensor and stabilization tech inside.

But, is it a deal you should snap up? After all, the Max was recently supplanted by the Max 2 (which, by the way, is also on sale – grab the Max 2 for £349 from WEX). Should I buy the GoPro Max?

It might be six years old, but the GoPro Max was ahead of its time in 2019, delivering full 360–degree coverage in 5.3K resolution, supported GoPro’s incredible HyperSmooth stabilization, and a huge range of accessories for various shooting scenarios, including car mounts and selife sticks.

GoPro announced a 2025 version of the original Max with a couple of tweaks and a more competitive list price, but that has now been obliterated by this Max deal. Since then, the Max 2 has entered the fray, and it's a meaty upgrade with industry-leading 8K quality.

There’s no doubt that 360 camera tech has moved on since 2019, and this year has been a particularly busy one with the new GoPro Max 2 and DJI Osmo 360 challenging the Insta360 X5 to be the best of them all.

You won't get the best quality 360-degree video with the Max, for that you'll want one of the latest GoPro Max 2, DJI Osmo 360 or Insta360 X5 flagships. But, what you do now get with this huge price cut is the best value option available.

Black Friday is here, which makes it the most cost-effective time to buy one of the best action cameras around at the moment. If you need a pointer, then I'd absolutely recommend the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro at Amazon for $259 (was $339).

The $80 discount brings the 4.5-star-rated action camera down to a record-low price. That's not bad at all for an action camera that competes admirably against GoPro, Insta360, and others.

I've been searching for the best Black Friday camera bargains, and I must say that the tastiest deals are for the latest 360 cameras. I can't say that I'm surprised, now that DJI and GoPro are vying with Insta360 to be the top pick, while Akaso entered the fray as a budget alternative.

So which you 360 camera should buy? That decision is hardly any easier since all the cameras are on sale over Black Friday, although your wallet will be thanking you if you act this week rather than delaying. If we're purely talking price, it's a win for DJI right now – the DJI Osmo 360 costs $357.49 at Amazon (was $549.99), while it's £298 at Amazon in the UK (probably the best deal of all).

In the US, there's $100 off for the GoPro Max 2 which is now $399 (was $499) - while it sinks to a record low in the UK: $349 at WEX (was $449). Meanwhile, the Insta360 X5 drops to $464.99 in the US (was $549.99) and to just £409.99 in the UK (was £519.99) – both of those are record-low prices, and it's available for that price in black or white colorways. Oh, and there are even bigger price cuts on older models.

Which 360 camera should you buy?

DJI and GoPro revealed stunning 360 cameras this year – the Osmo 360 and Max 2 respectively – that both shoot 8K video with full 360-degree coverage. They present a serious challenge to the Insta360 X5 – the top pick in my best 360 camera guide, and while I reckon the X5 remains the best camera of its kind overall, DJI's Osmo 360 and GoPro's Max 2 have certain advantages of their own.

So should you be looking for the best deal or the best value? Based on the deals above, surely DJI is the option to go for? Not exactly – prices only tell one side of the story (and they do regularly change).

The Insta360 X5 and GoPro Max 2 both have a trick up their sleeves that DJI's Osmo 360 wishes it had – and that's cost-effective replacement lenses. Should either of the lenses get damaged, say in a nasty tumble – which is quite likely depending on what kind of use the camera gets and the bulbous design of those optics – you can swap them out with a low-cost replacement. Not so with the Osmo 360.

On this basis and with the slight price differences in the UK and US over Black Friday, I'm tempted to recommend the GoPro and Insta360 cameras over DJI's right now.

That's one feature covered, but you should also consider when and where you are likely to use each camera. In our in-depth reviews, we said the Insta360 X5 is the best overall package, that the Max 2 excels in bright daylight with its 'true' 8K image quality, while the Osmo 360 is a low-light champion. As you can see, the choice also comes down to how you'll use a 360 camera – thankfully we've reviewed each model and distilled that advice into our best 360 cameras guide.

So surely it's a home run for DJI then? Not precisely, because prices only tell one side of the story and they do regularly change...

Best deal or best value?

GoPro's Max 2 has a trick up its sleeve that DJI's Osmo 360 wishes it had – cost-effective replacement lenses. Yes, should you damage either of the bulbous lenses in the Osmo 360 – which is quite likely depending on what kind of use it gets – it'll need to go in for repair or get replaced.

Not so with the Max 2, because you can easily remove a damaged lens should your camera take a particularly nasty tumble and swap it out with a low-cost replacement. The Insta360 X5 has this feature too, by the way.

On this basis and with the slight price difference in the UK, I'm tempted to recommend the Max 2 to UK shoppers right now. There's a bigger price difference in the US currently, so it's a closer call.

And then there's the matter of when you are likely to use each camera. In our in-depth reviews, we said the Max 2 offers the best 'true' 8K image quality in bright daylight, but that the Osmo 360 is a low-light champion. So again, the choice comes down to how you'll use a 360 camera.

This is the lowest-ever price by a long way in the UK for a Hero 13 Black bundle, which includes 2x Enduro batteries, 'The Handler' handle, 64GB SanDisk MicroSD card, and a camera case. General prices for the Hero 13 Black increased in the US in June this year, and so this isn't a record-low price, but the deal price below is the lowest I've seen this year and is still very much worth your attention.

Should you buy the GoPro Hero 13 Black?

Absolutely, especially at these sale prices for the Accessories Bundle, which are particularly good in the UK! And the Hero 13 Black remains in the top spot of my best action cameras guide, which says it all, really.

Yes, it is an iterative update of the Hero 12 Black – you can learn more about how the two flagship action cams compare in my Hero 13 Black vs Hero 12 Black article – but the new auto-detected Lens Mods feature takes GoPro's line of action cams in an exciting direction.

We still get 5.3K video with a versatile 8:7 aspect ratio sensor, plus incredible stabilization and a mature range of accessories. But the Hero 13 Black is a more polished effort than its predecessor, and it will remain the current model for some time yet, given that 2025 is officially the first year in a decade with no new Hero Black flagship.

Put simply, you won't get better action camera bang for buck than the Hero 13 Black right now.

After being rumored for months and teased by its makers a couple of weeks back, the DJI Osmo Action 6 is finally official. And DJI's latest flagship action camera – replacing the excellent Osmo Action 5 Pro which I reviewed just over a year ago – is packing some interesting technology.

Perhaps the most head-turning new feature is the variable aperture – as our in-depth Osmo Action 6 review explains. DJI claims that it's the first action camera to offer one, and while I must confess it's never been something I thought GoPros and the like were crying out for, I'm quietly intrigued by the possibilities.

The aperture has a range of f/2.0 to f/4.0, and DJI suggests that this allows the camera to function in a whole range of lighting conditions. It can of course be set to automatic adjustment if you just want to concentrate on other matters.

The other key feature is the new 1/1.1-inch square-format CMOS sensor, which has 2.4μm pixels. I say new, but we've seen it before in the DJI Osmo 360, and its size, shape and sensitivity are all impressive. It should spell better low light performance and better dynamic range (DJI says it can offer up to 13.5 stops of the latter) while supporting a "shoot now, crop later" approach that means you can shoot one video and then crop it differently for different social media platforms later.

The Osmo Action 6 also features 10-bit D-Log M recording, 4K capture at up to 120fps, 4K at up to 60fps in the low-light SuperNight mode, a 2x lossless zoom and RockSteady 3.0+ image stabilization with HorizonSteady 360º horizon levelling.

There's 50GB of built-in storage as well as a microSD slot, up to 4-hour battery life (with fast-charging from 0 to 80% in 22 minutes) and a rugged, cold-resistant build with IP68 protection against water. The camera is rated for diving use up to 20m deep without additional protection, and to 60m deep with the optional dive case.

Return of the Macro

A large range of optional accessories are launching alongside the Osmo Action 6, including ND filters, charging cases, mounts and a new Macro Lens. This lens add-on reduces the minimum focus distance from 35cm to 11cm, enabling vloggers to film close-ups of objects (including their own faces). I would say that 35cm seems like a long minimum focus distance for a camera of this type, and am quite interested to see how suitable the camera is for vlogging without the Macro Lens add-on.

The DJI Osmo Action 6 is available to order now, with the Standard Combo (which includes the camera, one battery, one quick-release mount, one curved adhesive base, one locking screw, one USB-C cable and one anti-slip pad) priced at $379 / £329 / AU$669 and the Adventure Combo (which includes the above plus two additional batteries, one additional quick-release mount, one additional locking screw, one battery case and one 1.5m extension rod) priced at $479 / £415 / AU$839 (B&H Photo is taking preorder in the US).

With the largest sensor size, variable aperture and DJI's excellent waterproofing, it could just be one of the best action cameras available.

DJI Osmo Action 6: two-minute review

When you think of action cameras, GoPro will likely spring to mind before DJI. While it wasn’t a complete surprise that the latter company, best known for its drones, made the move into the action cam market, it's had to do a lot of work over the past few years to catch up, and offer something that stands out from the competition.

The GoPro Hero 13 Black is arguably the action camera all others will currently be judged against, so DJI’s latest model in the Osmo series, the Osmo Action 6, has a lot to prove. That said, the quality of its predecessors, most notably the Osmo Action 5 Pro, has been hard to ignore, and based on my experience with that camera I had great expectations going into this review.

Fresh from reviewing the entry-level GoPro Lit Hero and Insta360 X4 Air, I was immediately impressed by the Osmo Action 6’s user-friendliness; the menus are easy to navigate, and the screens are a breeze to work with. Images and video also look amazing on these high-quality monitors, so reviewing the fruits of my shooting sessions was a pleasure.

Image quality is superb, benefiting from a larger 1/1.1-inch sensor, which produces excellent detail and color rendition in good lighting and stand-out noise performance as ambient light levels fall. I’d happily use the Osmo Action 6 as my main carry-everywhere camera, or as a backup to a mirrorless system for capturing unique perspectives from places those larger cameras simply can’t go.

I thoroughly enjoyed using the additional accessories, such as the Macro Lens, ND Filter Set, and FOV Boost Lens, which make the whole system feel pro-grade and versatile. If you're a fan of the GoPro mods, you’ll be happy to see DJI making efforts to expand the modular compatibility of its action cameras. Once you add in the streamlined compatibility with the wireless DJI microphones, I see the Osmo Action 6 as an indicator of great things to come.

DJI's Osmo Action 6 is available now, priced at £329 / AU$669 for the Standard Combo, while the prices rises to £415 / AU$839 for the Adventure Combo which adds two batteries, an extra quick-release mount and locking screw, battery case and 1.5m extension rod to the standard bundle.

Like recent DJI products, it's not available in the US at launch. A DJI spokesperson gave us the following statement:

"The DJI Osmo Action 6 will not be officially available in the US market through official websites following the global launch on 18th November. DJI remains committed to the U.S. market and is optimizing our strategy to best serve our customers amidst evolving local conditions."

That said, I'm already seeing the Osmo Action 6 available for preorder at B & H Photo for $379 (Standard Combo) or $479 (Adventure Combo).

If you’ve used the Osmo Action 6’s predecessors, such as the DJI Osmo Action 3 DJI Osmo Action 4, or DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro, there aren’t any drastic surprises in store for you design-wise. The body is a little bit larger, most notably in its width, measuring 72.8 x 47.2 x 33.1mm to the Osmo Action 5 Pro’s 70.5 x 44.2 x 32.8mm. It might be noticeable if you hold both cameras side-by-side, but in real-world terms it won’t make a huge difference to the handling experience.

The Osmo Action 6 remains super portable and lightweight, despite the inclusion of a larger sensor, which is impressive. As you’d expect from an action camera, it can be fitted into a coat pocket for easy transport or use on the move. However, fresh from testing the tiny GoPro Lit Hero, the Osmo Action 6 did feel quite chunky by comparison. This is a much higher-end product, however, featuring a larger CMOS unit, a lens aperture that's both adjustable and brighter, and a front LCD, all of which are missing from the entry-level GoPro.

I was immediately drawn to the 2.5-inch main LCD screen, which feels much bigger in use than the rival GoPro Hero 13 Black’s 2.27-inch monitor. Although this is still too small to get a truely precise idea of sharpness, it’s much nicer to look at than the screens on earlier models, and matches those on cameras like the Insta360 Ace Pro 2, which we ranked as the best premium action camera.

The screen itself was highly responsive in my tests, and I found it easy to access settings and navigate menus, even when the camera was wet or covered in a dusting of ground coffee (see the sample video below for context). I reckon I’d find it more practical to work with the Osmo Action 6 in cold weather than the native-portrait-orientation Insta360 X5 or Insta360 X4 Air.

Both the front and rear LCDs are crisp and easy to read in brighter light too. While smaller and lower-resolution, the front screen (1.46-inch, 342 x 342 pixels) is still useful, and doesn’t feel like an extra gimmicky feature that DJI threw in but which is ultimately pointless. I remember feeling that the front LCD on the GoPro Hero 9 Black was so laggy that there were times it was barely worth being there, for example.

The large shutter release is easy to locate without looking, speeding up operation. Also, I like DJI’s choice to place the microSD card slot in the battery bay, rather than alongside the USB-C port, something which proved fiddly and frustrating on the GoPro Lit Hero. I always appreciate integrated storage in a camera too, of which the Osmo Action 6 provides plenty at 50GB.

DJI Osmo Action 6: Performance

• Impressive four-hour battery life

DJI claims a battery life of 240 minutes for the Osmo Action 6, similar to the Action 5 Pro. Shooting inside and out, I found that a single charge lasted about four hours using a mix of 1080p and 4K resolutions, across the various modes. This is impressive, although as the temperature dropped, so too did the battery life, so if you plan to work away from a power source for any length of time I’d still advise taking a few extra batteries.

The RockSteady image stabilization system also has an impact on battery longevity, although in my tests, this wasn’t anything major. The system itself is effective. While not a replacement for a gimbal, I found I could create commendable tracking shots free from micro vibrations. The same was true with POV walking shots.

The Osmo Action 6 continued to perform well after being submerged in water, with the screen remaining responsive. Once it was removed from the water the lens quickly repelled remaining droplets, as did the body, making the camera easy to dry off.

The camera features voice control, which is either ideal or an irritation depending on the environment. When it worked, being able to give the Osmo Action 6 a voice command such as “start recording” helped free up my hands, while reducing the amount of footage I had to trim as I positioned the camera for my shots. On several occasions, it didn’t respond, or I didn’t realise it hadn’t stopped recording after a command at the end of the shot. If the microphone is obscured in any way, it produces mixed results.

Speaking of sound, I was surprised by the quality of the internal microphone. While an external mic like the DJI Mic Mini gives you more versatility, as well as depth of audio, the built-in mic didn’t have the thin sound common to similar mics on other small cameras.

If you own the Mic Mini or DJI Mic 2, connecting them to the Osmo Action 6 couldn’t be easier. Simply pressing and holding the link button on the mics themselves until the indicator light flashes blue is all it takes to get audio recording off-camera, giving video that extra professional edge.

DJI Osmo Action 6: Image quality

Along with smartphones, I think that action cameras best demonstrate how far sensor and processor technology have come over the past decade or so. By mirrorless camera standards, the 1/1.1-type sensor housed in the Osmo Action 6 is small, at around 14mm on the diagonal, yet in my testing it produced better results than a high-end compact camera from circa 2014.

The Osmo Action 6 sees a big jump in sensor size from the 1/1.3-type CMOS of the Action 5 Pro, but uses a similar resolution of 38MP for still images.. This allows for greater pixel pitch (the distance from the center of one pixel to its neighbors), which benefits light-gathering capacity; the pixel size is 2.4 micrometers. An image measuring 7168 x 5376 is still quite a lot of pixels for this sensor format, but while I wasn’t amazed by the camera’s low-light performance, nor did I find it especially problematic.

Detail in stills becomes a little smudged from around ISO 800 and above, shooting in gloomy indoor lighting, but outdoors, or in direct artificial light, noise levels are kept at respectable levels for an action camera. Colors are also still quite punchy.

Video footage, meanwhile, is excellent in moderate low light. There is noise visible, but the grain size looks very fine, meaning it’s easier to ignore in areas of the image containing flat tones. I thought in-camera processing coped well, minimizing noise without obliterating texture.

I did notice that some quite excessive sharpening is applied in some circumstances, no doubt to counteract any noise-reduction related degradation. It isn’t a deal-breaker, but you might want to turn down the default sharpening (known as Texture in the Image Adjustment menu) for a more organic look.

The SuperNight mode is designed to produce a brighter image in low-light conditions by increasing the exposure digitally, then applying AI noise-reduction processes to minimize grain. This produces footage with significantly less texture, so I wouldn’t recommend it if your video is likely to be viewed on a larger screen, where this effect will be far more noticeable. In everyday shooting scenarios, or for social media, however, it captures brighter shadows, so it's useful for shooting around cities. There's a lot less distracting noise, too.

I enjoyed using the Slow Motion mode as a means of capturing share-ready footage in-camera; however, for professional uses, I’d recommend switching to a higher frame rate, shooting your footage, and manually applying the Slow Mo effect in editing.

I really appreciated the Color Recovery feature when shooting in D-Log M, which allows you to preview how the footage would look with a profile applied. This doesn’t bake in any edit settings, but merely gives you an idea of the final image after grading.

All of the shooting conditions mentioned above would be challenging for any camera, and once you take the DJI Osmo Action 6 out into bright daylight, the quality is superb. Combined with the flexibility of the Log mode, it’s possible to capture excellent levels of detail and natural colors.

GoPro Hero 13 Black users might bemoan the ‘limited’ 4K resolution here, in favor of the 5.3K available on that model, but 4K is fine in all but the most specific of situations. I still shoot in Full HD as standard when creating content for social platforms, unless I know that for some reason I’ll need to crop or recompose my frame in DaVinci Resolve. The workflow is faster, and viewers are unlikely to perceive a difference in Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts, for instance.

How I tested the DJI Osmo Action 6

• I tested a full production model running release firmware over several days

To ensure I was able to get a true sense of the Osmo Action 6's capabilities, I shot in a range of lighting conditions. My indoor tests involved a vlog-style shoot, testing the sensor's high-ISO performance and the camera's temperature and water resistance (I placed the camera in a freezer and poured cold water over it for a unique POV). I then took the camera out into the countryside, where I filmed close to and underwater. These shoots also gave me the opportunity to use the optional macro lens and FOV Boost lens. All audio was captured using the in-camera mic. Footage was edited in DaVinci Resolve 20.

If you've seen someone vlogging with a curious stick-like camera, chances are it's the best-selling DJI Osmo Pocket 3. After all, the tiny gimbal-mounted video camera shoots smooth 4K video supported by neat features, such as one-push selfies and a swivel monitor for vertical or horizontal shooting. And right now, it returns to a sensible low price after a big price hike months back – you can grab the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 at Amazon for $528 (was $799.99).

I could attribute this price reduction to rumors of the Osmo Pocket 4, which have ramped up and suggest the Pocket 3's successor is close to launch. However, it's not that simple, because there's every chance that the Pocket 4 won't even launch in the US.

With that in mind, $528 for the Pocket 3 is an incredibly attractive price for a smartphone-beating vlogging camera with a large 1-inch sensor and direct compatibility with DJI's wireless mics – and others. I expect stock will sell out fast, so if DJI's vlogging camera appeals, this is a deal I would act fast on.

Today's best DJI Osmo Pocket 3 deal

The rumored Osmo Pocket 4 is tipped to feature twin cameras, meaning it could be possible to record both front- and behind-the-camera angles simultaneously, and a second screen could be added to display both of those angles.

The New Camera goes on to suggest DJI could surprise us with higher-resolution 6K video recording with 10-bit color depth, and that 4K video frame rates could be upped to an impressive 240fps. A December 18 release date is being suggested, too.

So where does this leave the Pocket 3? Well, the Pocket 4 sounds like a different kind of proposition for vloggers, meaning the simpler Pocket 3 could remain available. And we've every reason to believe that the Pocket 4 will not be available in the US at launch, if recent Neo 2 and Mini 5 Pro DJI announcements are anything to go by.

It might be two years old, but the Osmo Pocket 3 still delivers on almost every front. It shoots smooth 4K video up to 60fps or 120fps slow motion, pairs seamlessly with wireless mics (especially DJI's own Mic Mini and Mic 3) and I love the swivel touch monitor that cleverly switches between horizontal and vertical recording. The gimbal-mounted camera switches from front to selfie recording at the push of a button, too.

There's a reason the Pocket 3 remains top pick in my best vlogging cameras guide, so I'd advise picking one up while this affordable deal lasts.

Insta360 just gave its flagship Ace Pro 2 action camera a major boost with a range of new accessories, including a photographer's grip, three lenses for different looks, and the bizarre crossover we didn't know we needed (and probably don't) – a clip-on instant printer. You can see the full setup in the image above.

Some of the new accessories feel sensible, such as the new cinematic, ultra-wide, and close-up lenses. Taking a page out of GoPro's book with its Hero 13 Black Lens Mods – a feature that I labeled the 'future of action camera design', users will be able to get anamorphic-style clips with the cinematic lens, and focus closer with the close-up lens. I can already feel GoPro's ire.

And then there's the Xplorer Grip Pro – a case with an integrated battery and ergonomic grip (see below). It's the type of accessory that Chinese phone brands have been delivering in recent years to improve the handling of their phones for photography, such as the excellent Xiaomi 15 Ultra photography kit.

Clearly, Insta360 wants the Ace Pro 2 to be a photographer's tool as well as an 8K action cam, and for users wanting a comprehensive action camera, it kind of makes sense.

The peculiar addition, however, has to be the clip-on Pocket Printer, which Insta360 says is the 'first made for an action camera–delivers instant, memorable keepsakes from any moment'. It prints 3-inch auto-laminated photos (54 × 82mm, with a 54 × 72mm printable area) using dye-sublimation technology, which Insta360 says 'matches the vibrant footage from Ace Pro 2' and are waterproof, dustproof, and fade-resistant.

I don't typically associate action cams with photography at all, let alone making instant prints from them on the go. This accessory I'm filing under 'don't knock it till you try it'.

Overkill or genius?

Between GoPro, DJI, and Insta360's latest flagship action cameras, I believe the Hero Black 13's swappable lenses to be the most exciting path for action cams, more so than the Ace Pro 2's 8K video skills. However, now you can get both with the Insta360 model, thanks to the three new lenses – each one directly inspired by (or imitating) GoPro.

I wouldn't necessarily think of using the Ace Pro 2 for photography, because its strength is undeniably video. However, the handling of the camera for photography would indeed improve with the new grip, while new Leica color profiles will no doubt assist in getting a strong look straight out of the camera, ready for print.

The printer, on the other hand – well, the jury is out on that one. I like the Instax Mini Link printers for on-the-go printing, but I wouldn't bring those into outdoor adventure moments.

There are now a number of Ace Pro 2 bundles available with these new accessories; the XPlorer Pro Bundle adds the new grip and additional battery and costs $519.99. The Flash Print bundle further adds the Pocket Printer, a Flip Screen Hood, and Classic Leather Case for $579.99 / £545 / A$1,049. The Ultimate Videography Bundle also adds the three new lenses and costs $739.99 / £725 / A$1,359. There are other bundles just with one of the lenses if you don't want all three, and all bundles are available immediately at launch, from November 12.

Well, the humble Xbox may not be long for this world. Microsoft has effectively confirmed that we'll likely only see one more console generation after the current-gen (and terribly-named) Xbox Series X, with the company's gaming strategy shifting to supporting its games across other platforms, including PlayStation and PC.

The good news is that with Black Friday closing in fast – and Sony also taking steps to make its first-party titles available on PC – there's never been a better time to make the shift to PC gaming. I took the leap more than a decade ago, leaving my tired old Xbox 360 in the dust to buy a pre-built gaming PC, and I couldn't be happier about it – while the upfront cost might be greater, it's definitely saved me money in the long run.

Aside from the initial price, the big problem is that many of the best gaming PCs can't seamlessly replace a console. They're usually just too big; my first gaming PC was a real chunky boy, sucking up dust underneath the desk in my tiny student accommodation bedroom. But if you want something powerful, future-proof, and compact enough to fit inside your TV stand, I've got the answer: the 2025 Asus ROG NUC.

Now, this thing is practically a new release, so you can't expect to see massive deals on it yet, but I'm personally hoping the discount below gets a little deeper as we edge closer to Black Friday. Don't get me wrong; a 6% discount is fairly meager even if a $150 saving is nothing to sniff at, but as I said above, I suspect we'll see that discount get a bit more appealing once Black Friday and Cyber Monday actually arrive – after all, we're still three weeks out from the mega-sale event itself. I'll be watching this one like a hawk (mainly because I'm tempted to buy one myself), so feel free to bookmark this page and check back closer to the big day, as I'll update it with any price changes.

I really can't understate how great the new ROG NUC is. I gave it a near-perfect score in my review last month, citing the unarguably high retail price as my main criticism against this powerful yet sleek and compact PC. Quite frankly, any sort of discount pushes it closer to that coveted 5-star rating in my mind.

For what it's worth, I'd advise springing for the RTX 5070 model. If you're already dropping upwards of a cool thousand bucks on a PC for gaming, opting for the 5070 over the 5060 will ensure your system is more future-proofed for handling more demanding games as time goes on - though of course, both models have access to Nvidia's fancy new DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation tech for boosting your gaming performance.

Things are moving fast when it comes to the DJI Osmo Action 6: DJI has posted a teaser with a launch date for the long-rumored successor to the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro, while global pricing for the action camera has leaked as well.

First, there's the official teaser, with the tag line "square up, nail the move". That's rather ambiguous, but we think it might refer to a square camera sensor – which, as per previous rumors, is likely to be a larger 1/1.1-inch size in this new model (potentially the same one as in the Osmo 360).

Less ambiguous is the launch date and time of Tuesday November 18, with events getting underway at 12pm GMT (that's 4am PT / 7am ET / 11pm AEDT). We will of course be ready and waiting to bring you the announcements as they're made.

The teaser image focuses on the main camera of the DJI Osmo Action 6, and judging by the animation it looks as though we're in line for a variable aperture this time around – the first time we'll have seen one on an action camera, and also something that's been previously rumored.

Global pricing leaks

Now to the unofficial updates, and Dealabs (via Notebookcheck) thinks that the starting price in the US will be $379. That compares to $349 for the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro Standard Combo bundle, though of course the bundle details may differ.

The pricing will be £329 in the UK and €379 in Europe, according to the same tipster, with the more extensive Adventure Combo package coming in at $479 / £419 / €479 – that's a slight increase over the same bundle for the 2024 model camera.

This leak doesn't mention Australian pricing, but the DJI Osmo Action Pro 5 pricing was AU$599 for the Standard Combo and AU$769 for the Adventure Combo, so we can probably expect something along those lines or a little higher for the new model.

All the indications are that this is going to be quite a substantial upgrade, making the Osmo Action 6 very much a contender for our list of the best action cameras you can buy, and within a couple of weeks everything will be official – even as a potential US ban for DJI looms.

If you love taking photos and videos, modern smartphones are better than ever – but they’re still not the best tool for the job. If you want a device that’s more capable than your phone but remains portable and won’t break the bank, you can’t go wrong with this DJI Osmo Pocket 3 at Best Buy for $599.99 (was $799.99).

That’s an incredibly attractive price when you consider you're getting 25% off a nifty handheld camera that packs in a wealth of tremendous features. Deals like that don’t come along every day, and it means you can get this camera with a significant chunk of cash left over, long before Black Friday arrives.

Indeed, the price was pretty much the only sticking point when we reviewed this camera. But now that that’s much less of an issue, there’s little reason not to snap one up if you’re in the market for a new photo and video companion. Whether you want to shoot gimbal-stabilized videos or need something to keep your photos shake-free, it’s a good way to achieve the results you’re looking for.
