• O2 You can now unlock any O2 phone for free if you're on a pay monthly contract or PAYG.
• Three Three phones are all unlocked as soon as they come out of the box. So you can put an EE SIM card in any Three mobile you like without charge and hassle.
• EE If your EE phone is locked, you will have to pay the network £8.99 if you're in contract, but it's free if you're out of your EE contract. Any iPhone from EE will automatically become unlocked after 18 months. Unlocking PAYG EE phones is free if bought directly from the network, otherwise it's £8.99.
• Vodafone Unlocking should be free but can take around 10 days. 

What SIM card size do I need?

There are three SIM sizes out there so your phone will likely take the most recent nano SIM, if it's relatively new. The three sizes are classic standard SIM (15x25mm), micro SIM (12x15mm) or nano SIM (8.8x12.3mm).

The networks and third party sellers will let you choose which SIM you need or will simply send out a triple SIM, so you'll get one of each size. Alternatively, they'll send you an adapter so you can use the incorrect SIM size in your phone.

What contract length should I get?

Tesco Mobile offers two types of SIM only contract: rolling monthly or yearly. 

The 12-month contracts offer more savings as you're committing to the year so Tesco Mobile can offer you cheaper charges. It'll cost you a bit more, and requires a 30-day notice period, but for that freedom it could be worth it.

How much phone data do I need?

You may already have an idea of how much data you use and your phone will keep track of that so you can always check that way. If you've got an allowance now and you're going over it, or staying under, then that's also a decent measure of data needs. But here's some more detail to help you gauge what you need. 

• 1GB You can get less data than this a month (from a lowly 100MB) but we really won't recommend anything lower than 1GB these days. It won't cost you much and it'll provide essential access to apps.
• 2-6GB A lot of people go for a little more data, as a couple more quid a month doesn't seem like a lot in exchange for much more freedom. Keep up-to-date with social media, the football results and news apps in comfort.
• 12-20GB Tesco Mobile's SIM only deals are still reasonable when you get to this level of data allowance. Loads of data for downloading and streaming.

If you leave the usual network provider's country of origin then your phone will go into roaming mode, meaning you use a local network where you are.

The SIM tray is stored on the side of the iPhone – apart from the first three models –and can be removed using the included SIM-eject tool. Realistically you've probably lost that long ago. Thankfully you can bend out a paperclip and that will do the job just fine too.

Poke the paperclip point into the SIM tray hole then apply a little force and it will pop out. Use your fingers to remove the tray the rest of the way. You'll now be able to tip out the old SIM, drop in your new one – with that corner cut-off as a guide to orientation – then slide the tray back in. 

You may not need to even turn off or restart your phone for this to start working. Although we'd recommend you turn off before starting the swap and power back on once the new SIM is in, to be safe and avoid potential damage. 

How do I remove my Android SIM?

Unlike iPhone, Android handsets are all different. However they're usually fairly similar, with a side or top loading SIM tray. Older models, with removable rear covers sometimes have the SIM tray below or above the battery. 

In the case of phones with a SIM tray on the side or top of the Android handset, a SIM-ejector tool or bent paperclip can be used to pop the tray out.

Once again, we recommend you turn the phone off before you begin the process of replacing the SIM with the new chip. Then power back on once the SIM tray is securely in place once again.

There are instances where you might not need to worry about your SIM size. This is usually the case when you're buying the phone directly from the network provider. 

So in the case of a contract deal you'll get sent the phone and SIM by the provider. As such they'll send you the right size to suit your handset.

But if you're buying a second-hand phone or changing your contract to SIM only then you'll want to be sure the device and chip pair up correctly.

Can I use my SIM in a newer phone?

Definitely don't try this when going from Micro SIM to Nano SIM as the chips themselves are different sizes so even cutting the plastic won't help.

You can buy SIM adapters which allow you to upsize a smaller SIM to larger and these are found cheaply online.

But, since most networks send out SIMs for free, we'd always advise ordering the SIM that you need to fit your phone.

That comes mainly down to its performance. EE will be the absolute perfect choice for people who don't mind paying a bit more money for reliability from their network. EE has the UK's fastest 4G speeds and was the first to install 5G connections with the largest coverage.

While EE won't be roping in people looking for a bargain (Three seems to have that market on lock), EE throws in a number of additional incentives to increase its value.

Vodafone: excellent all-rounder

If Three is a no-thrills affordable option and EE is a pricier feature-packed network, Vodafone sits comfortably somewhere in the middle. It will be perfect for those who like EE but aren't willing to match its prices but also find what Three offers to be a little too simplistic.

When you sign up to Vodafone, you get access to the network's app with the ability to manage data caps, add advanced security features (for an extra cost), keep an eye on how much data you have left and make use of the VeryMe feature.

VeryMe is Vodafone's secret weapon. It aims to match O2's Priority rewards scheme by offering free coffees, competitions, discount codes, data boosts and a whole lot more. Vodafone has even introduced a special offer every Friday, frequently collaborating with a big name company to bring you big discounts.

Vodafone covers a lot of different data caps and like Three, goes easily from 1GB through to unlimited with a lot of choice in the middle. While Vodafone isn't usually quite as cheap as Three, it frequently receives cashback from 3rd party retailers (such as Mobiles.co.uk and Fonehouse) meaning if you don't mind relying on cashback, you can get Vodafone very cheap.

While it won't be quite as fast as EE, Vodafone doesn't fall all too far behind when it comes to ping, download or upload speeds. Unless you're the kind of person using their phone for data-intensive tasks, this shouldn't be all too noticeable.

Vodafone is best for:

• Those looking for a strong reward scheme, competitions and more

O2: heavy on the incentives

O2, like the other three networks, has massively raised its game recently. Its prices have come down, its data packages have improved and it has gone all out on its incentives.

One of the major factors that stands out with O2 is its competition with Vodafone over which network has the best rewards scheme. O2's Priority rewards lands you early access to gig tickets, free coffees, competitions and more.

Those who go to a lot of live events will find O2's occasional offers on tickets and pre-orders to be a major incentive. Another worthwhile benefit of O2 is its Wi-Fi points.

Across the UK, O2 has over 15,000 Wi-Fi points to use in cafes, shops, restaurants and more. This means that even if you don't have a great data plan with O2, you're always able to connect when you're out and about.

SIM only users waste an average of 2GB of data every month with their mobile phone plan - that's according to a new study from Citizens Advice. It's a problem that affects around 12 million SIM only users in the UK and could include you!

The estimated waste in money is a massive £800 million a year, with 71% of SIM only customers overpaying for unused data. That means an average of £63 per person per year - so over a fiver a month.

This follows a similar recent study from Citizens Advice which found networks are making around £475 million per year from customers who don't change plan after their contract runs out.

Citizens Advice also found that by making your purchase online you're more likely to save money. Those buying online waste around 2.6GB per month compared to 4.2GB for those that got their deal in store.

Gillian Guy, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice, said: "While we wait for industry to improve support for customers, individuals can take action too. Anyone looking to save money should check their data usage and see if they can switch to a cheaper deal that matches what they use."

Simply call your existing network provider to get your PAC code. This will last for 30 days so in that time you need to provide it to your new network so they can activate it. In the interim you'll be on a new SIM with a different number until that updates.

This can be done right away with networks like EE saying if you submit info before 5.30pm your new SIM will have your old number at the start of the next working day. All you need to do is restart the phone and you can carry on with your old number on a new handset and network as if nothing changed. Perfect.

4. Vodafone just improved its perks

We've enjoyed Vodafone's Red Entertainment plans for a while now. These premium tariffs have given you the choice of a free subscription to Spotify Premium, NOW Entertainment TV or the Sky Sports app.

But Vodafone has recently added Amazon Prime Video as an extra choice, as well as adding 29 new destinations to its free roaming perk, including the US, Canada, South Africa and Australia.

5. Virgin Mobile just went big on 100GB

Virgin Mobile really knows how to keep us on our toes. Some of the special limited-time SIM only 'Flash Sales' it produces are well worth shouting about, and its August offer is no different – it's offering 100GB of data for a mere £20 per month.

There's a limit on calls, but 5,000 minutes a month should still be sufficient for even the most ardent chatterboxes. And if you decide a few months in that you were blinded by all that data and don't really need 100GB, Virgin's flexible plans mean that you can make a change.
