Simple but effective, the MG5150 is a worthy newcomer to Canon's growing range of five-ink all-in-one printers. The onboard control system for direct printing is particularly intuitive, running costs are reasonable, and print quality is very good for both document and photo printing.

We liked

Refreshingly neat and compact for an all-in-one printer, the MG5150 has the refinement of dual input trays, ideal for stocking plain paper for document printing and photo paper, without the need to keep swapping them over in a single tray.

Auto duplex adds to the printer's green credentials, making it easy to cut down on paper usage for multi-page document output.

Scanning and printing quality are both very impressive, and the standalone control interface for direct printing is intuitive and speedy.

We disliked

Unlike most of Canon's all-in-one printers, including the older MP560, there's no wireless connectivity, which is a pain for printing from laptops. Unlike the Canon MP640, there's also no facility for printing directly onto compatible CDs and DVDs and the MG5150 takes about twice as long to print photos.

Verdict

If you don't need Wi-Fi printing or the ability to print onto CDs or DVDs, the MG5150 offers a great deal for the money. It's ideal as both a document printer and for photo output, and the standalone controls are wonderfully intuitive.
