How to add the moon to other night scenes

You can use a simple Photoshop technique and add your moon pictures to liven up the dark skies of other images.

1. Get started

Launch Photoshop. Open your moon shot and the image you want to work with - you need a photo that includes a big expanse of dark sky.

2. Cut out the moon

Select your moon shot and use the Lasso tool to trace around the moon's contours. Press Ctrl+C to copy the cutout moon.

3. Paste it in

Open your landscape photo and hit Ctrl+V to paste the moon onto it. Use the Move tool to position the moon where you like in the sky.

4. Lighten up

In the Layers palette, click 'Normal' and select 'Lighten' from the dropdown. This will cut out any remaining black sky from your moon image.

5. Flatten to finish

When you're happy with your composite image, click 'Layer' in the main menu and pick 'Flatten' from the dropdown to create a single photo.
