Edmonton Oilers have nothing but revenge on their mind and start as favorites against the Florida Panthers, their vanquishers 12 months ago, for the Stanley Cup.

It will be a tough battle for the Panthers throughout the series, but they are coming off a hot end-of-season run that they hope to keep going for the series with Boston. Offensively strong, they were the only team this season to twice score at least four goals against Boston.

Boston of course won’t go down without a fight (if at all). With a record-setting regular season in the books, they certainly have the motivation to cap it with an historic playoff run as well. They’ll need to stay healthy throughout this opening series (and beyond) if they want to put all the pieces in the right places. 

Perhaps the biggest news is whether or not Boston captain Patrice Bergeron will be healthy when the puck drops. Bergeron missed game 1 due to illness that has apparently swept through the Bruins’ locker room. 

As much as Boston has the momentum, it’s still very much anyone’s series at this point. Florida can easily snag a win before they head back home, which could put the Bruins on their heels for the rest of the series.

The Rangers, on the other hand, bring along the most recent postseason experience with a slightly older and more experienced squad.

NBA All-Star Weekend 2023 preview

Nobody puts on an All-Star Weekend quite like the NBA, and this year we're in Salt Lake City, with Team LeBron set to face Team Giannis at the Utah Jazz's Vivint Arena. The headline act is just one component of a Grade A schedule that's fit to bursting, the highlights being the star-studded All-Star Celebrity Game (for the chuckles), the Rising Stars game (for the hoops nerds), and All-Star Saturday Night (the main event for many), comprising the Skills Challenge, 3-Point Contest, and prestigious Slam Dunk competition.

Fresh from setting a new NBA scoring record, King James will no doubt be the center of attention at the three-day jamboree, though his teammates for the All-Star Game are yet to be decided. That's because the draft will be held just before tip-off. As of now, all we know is that the Nuggets' Michael Malone has been assigned to coach Team LeBron, and the Celtics' Joe Mazzulla will take the reins of Team Giannis.

Because the All-Star vote concluded before the trade deadline, only three of the original five Eastern Conference starters actually play in the Eastern Conference. Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant were both traded from the Nets just over a week ago, though Irving's knee injury means he won't make it out onto the court at all. Steph Curry and Zion Williamson, representing the Western Conference, have also been ruled out.

The Rockets' Kenyon Martin Jr. will be one of the happiest guys out there, having been granted a temporary reprieve from fighting fires with the Rockets in order to strut his stuff in the Slam Dunk Contest, while the prospect of seeing the superhuman physique of stud NFL receiver DK Metcalf on-court in the All-Star Celebrity Game is almost as much of a selling point as the actual All-Star Game.

NBA All-Star Saturday Night 2023

Of course, it's not just about the All-Star Game. One of the main attractions of the weekend is All-Star Saturday Night, which tips off at 8pm ET / 7pm CT / 5pm PT on Saturday, February 18.

As ever, it will encompass three events: the Skills Challenge, the 3-Point Contest, and the Slam Dunk.

The Skills Challenge is the first event and pits three teams of three players against each other in a three-round competition that tests their shooting, passing, and dribbling. The top two teams then face off in a half-court shot showdown.

Next is the 3-Point Contest, a two-round, timed shooting competition between eight all-stars. It's 70 seconds of mayhem for every contender, who has to rack up as many points as possible from a multitude of pre-determined shooting locations - and don't forget about those money balls.

Closing the night we have the big one, the Slam Dunk Contest, a two-round competition that will see a panel of judges rate every dunk on a scale of 6 to 10, with Trey Murphy III, Kenyon Martin Jr., Jericho Sims, and Mac McClung in the spotlight and looking to impress with some outrageous aerial maneuvers.

2023 NBA All-Star Weekend host city and venues

Salt Lake City is hosting the NBA All-Star Weekend for the second time ever, with the All-Star Game set to be played at Vivint Arena, home of the Utah Jazz.

It's also where the Rising Stars tournament and All-Star Saturday Night will play out, while the University of Utah’s Jon M. Huntsman Center will host the All-Star Celebrity Game, the NBA x HBCU Classic, and the NBA G League Next Up Game.

Featuring seven Skills Competitions at various venues all around and the Sunshine State, and the All-Star Game at FLA Live Arena, the home of the Florida Panthers, it's a chance for the NHL's best players to flaunt their talents, show off their personalities, and get one over an opponent or two. 

It's always a memorable occasion, but this year's event promises to be extra special for Alex Ovechkin, who's taking part in his eighth All-Star Game and his first since 2018 (having had to skip his last three call ups), and for Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk, representing his team in his hometown, alongside his brother, Senators forward Brady Tkachuk.

The All-Star Game component of the weekend takes part on Saturday. It's a three-game tournament played in a 3-on-3 format, and the head coaches are Rod Brind'Amour (Metropolitan), Jim Montgomery (Atlantic), Peter DeBoer (Central) and Bruce Cassidy (Pacific).

NHL All-Star Skills Competition 2023

The 2023 All-Star Skills Competition is being held on Friday, February 3, starting at 7pm ET / 6pm CT / 4pm PT. Once again, it will encompass seven events, three of which are brand new.

Splash Shot sounds like the most exciting of them all, and the recipe for a an all-out brawl on the Fort Lauderdale beach. Eight players, split into four pairings, will have to hit a series of targets in order to earn the chance to dunk their opponents. 

Pitch 'n Puck sounds pretty great too, combining ice hockey and golf to create the super-sport that every kid has dreamed about at least once. Six players will be let loose on a par-4 hole featuring an island green, and will have to sink a puck. In the event of a tie, the player who hit the longest drives takes the win. 

Tendy Tandem is essentially a direct replacement for Save Streak, and requires eight goalies to pair up, with one shooting and the other in net, guarding a hole (three points) and a target (two points). Standard shootout rules apply, and the duo with the most points wins. 

And, of course, there are the old favorites Fastest Skater, Hardest Shot, Breakaway Challenge, and Accuracy Shooting.

The 2022 All-Star Skills Competition is being held on Friday, February 4, starting at 7.30pm ET / 6.30pm CT / 4.30pm PT. This year it will encompass seven events, two of which will take over world-famous Las Vegas landmarks.
