Even our hardened delivery driver made comments about the weight of the SM-11S1 power amp and we rather cynically expected heavyweight casework to be the culprit. In fact, the main contributing factor is one of the biggest transformer enclosures we’ve seen - there’s a screening can (with inaccessible fixing screws) over something that’s probably big enough to weld with!

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, Marantz took the whole THX concept to heart. The technology has since been widely implemented on its AV amplifiers and receivers down the years, even as some other AVR brands appeared to lose interest in the philosophy, with the SR8002 the latest to boast certification, this time in the form of THX Select2.

    Marantz SR5500 review

Marantz's SR5500 has been doing the rounds since late 2004, which equates to being long-inthe- tooth in AV receiver terms. As such it doesn't boast any auto set-up system, has no truck with auto EQ and doesn't come supplied with...

The Marantz SR6001 has plenty in common with the high-end SR7001receiver we reviewed in our March issue. The design team may have spentless on connectivity, but from the front, it looks identical to its

Marantz' SR5001 sets a high standard for a receiver under £500. Build quality is outstanding for the money and only the lightweight and button-crazy handset give us any cause to grumble. Sacrifices have inevitably been made to keep pricing low.

    Marantz PM7001 KI review

With the basic PM7001 (£350) firmly established as one of the key amps to beat below £500, the KI version has quite some reputation to live up to. As usual with Marantz's 'Ken Ishiwata Signature' range, the basis is the same set of circuits

The Marantz stand at IFA last September positively bristled with new kit, and the SR7001 is the first of a classy new line-up of AV receivers. In the past, Marantz's receivers have tended to concentrate on sound quality at the expense of gadgetry.

Despite claims to the contrary, the profile of many brands best fits either a hi-fi scenario or a home cinema one. Marantz is one of the very few companies with feet successfully planted in both camps

Marantz' SR7001 AV receiver has all bases covered for those seeking a flexible home cinema powerhouse that isn't likely to be outclassed soon. The seven-channel amp is THX certified, so complies with specialist surround sound performance criteria

The SA-11 series was first launched in S1 guise as the ultimate expression of Marantz's art and craft, but since then has been superseded in this role by the 'Legendary' (sic) series. But there is more than a coincidental degree of commonality in the two ranges.

Yes, the case, controls and display are different, but under the hood the main audio board here is very, very similar to the Denon TU-1800DAB, and the FM and DAB tuner modules are essentially the same parts

It must be one of the biggest and heaviest players around at this sort of price. The weight is accounted for not least by the thick steel panel screwed to the bottom which reduces audio-frequency resonance in the chassis, while the size.

There's no doubt about it, Marantz's latest foray into the all-in-one market is gorgeous. Taking it out of the box brought back memories of the first Scalextric set I received for Christmas - lots of 'wows' and much stroking of sleek and shiny objects.
