Samsung Galaxy S4 wireless charging was made a reality today thanks to the announcement that the smartphone will be compatible with Qi wireless charging accessories.
While the Galaxy S4 won't support wireless charging out-of-the-box, there will be an optional back battery cover and wireless charging pads added to the growing list of optional accessories.
According to the 130-member Wireless Power Consortium, this may be the ultimate Samsung Galaxy S4 accessory.
"Qi cuts the last remaining cord in consumer electronics - the charging cord," said the Wireless Power Consortium in a press release.
"The Galaxy S4 is the latest addition to the rapidly expanding Qi ecosystem of mobile devices, charging accessories, charging locations, and consumer electronics with an installed base of more than 15 million units."
No wireless charging price, release date
The good news for people looking to pre-order the Samsung Galaxy S4 is that Qi is an open, easy-to-use wireless charging standard.
"Any Qi-certified device wirelessly charges using any Qi-compatible charger, regardless of brand," said the consortium.
"It's easy, you just set your Qi-supported device on any Qi charging spot and it instantly starts charging."
The bad news is that the Galaxy S4-compatible wireless charging accessories don't have an official price or release date attached to them yet.
However, the convenience of wirelessly charging the upcoming smartphone, and simultaneously trumping iPhone 5 owners who don't have access to this "new" technology, may be worth any price.
