Ultrabooks all feature a Core i3, i5 or i7 processor, plus fast SSD storage and USB 3.0 connectivity.
<mediainsert caption="null" mediatype="brightcove" height="null" src="1437758361001" width="null">brightcove : 1437758361001</mediainsert>
According to Intel, Ultrabooks also have "ultra-capabilities" - security features, battery power, instant-on and quick standby. They'll provide a lightweight alternative to tablet devices for people who just can't work without a full QWERTY keyboard.

Intel has announced a massive $300m (£185m) fund to help develop Ultrabook hardware and software, and it's confident that Ultrabooks will make up 40% of the market by 2012.

The first models are shipping with current generation Sandy Bridge Core processors, which will be replaced this year by a new generation of Ivy Bridge chips.

Intel set an initial price target of $999/£999 for Ultrabooks, though many have been more expensive - expect serious in-roads on the cheaper £600-£800 market this year.

But what's the best Ultrabook to buy? Check out the best Ultrabooks we've reviewed, as well as some we got hands on with at CES 2012.

1. LG Z330 and Z430 Super Ultrabooks

Rather than a tapered design, the chassis on the 13.3-inch LG Z330 Super Ultrabook is 14.7mm thick from front to back. It runs Windows 7 (for now) and has a bigger brother, the LG Z430, which comes with a 14-inch display. Why is it 'Super'? Because LG says so.

Read our Hands on: LG Z330 and Z430 Super Ultrabook review

2. When closed, the wedge-shaped laptop measures 17mm at its thickest point and a mere 3mm at its thinnest. The same design thinking even stretches to the Intel Core and Windows 7 stickers. We wonder who it was that proposed they were silver and black - Intel? Asus? - but whoever did has made a difference.

Read our Asus Zenbook UX31 review

3. The only worry? Battery life is pegged at around 6.5 hours, which is about 2 hours too short in our book.
Not to be confused with the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook. Which is definitely not an Ultrabook.

Read our Hands on: Samsung Series 5 Ultra review

4. It's not much of a looker and, at 18mm around the middle, it's not the slimmest Ultrabook at CES.

But HP is claiming a 9-hour battery life for the Folio 13, which will be ideal for regular mobile workers who value staying power over pretty design.

Read our Hands on: HP Folio 13 review

6. The body is aluminium, and weighs 1.4kg, the same as the Acer Aspire S3, but much heavier than the Toshiba Portege Z830 and the Toshiba Satellite Z830-10U. So does the launch of its first full-capacitive-touchscreen smartphone, the BlackBerry Torch 9860, herald a change in fortunes for the Canadian company?

It certainly doesn't have the premium feel of the iPhone 4 or even the touch-and-type BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900. But, happily, its appeal doesn't grind to a halt once you get the TV set home.

On the contrary, it starts to look like even better value when you actually start using it. Despite costing under £600, it combines a lovely design with a long feature count – including a terrific Smart TV system – and startlingly good picture quality that's better than that of many more expensive TVs we've seen. Provided you give the Samsung UE40D5520 a few minutes of your time when you first unbox it, your efforts will be rewarded more than handsomely.

Sony KDL-40NX723 review

The KDL-40NX723 isn't the most advanced TV Sony has to offer (the KDL-40HX723 offers MotionFlow 400) but there's a definite premium vibe about the 40-inch connected TV in everything from its super-slim Monolithic design to its extensive feature list.

Nikon Coolpix S9100 review

Priced at around £220, the Nikon Coolpix S9100 is a camera that offers good image quality and a flexible zoom range in a compact body at a very reasonable price. The ease of use will suit point-and-shoot photographers incredibly well, as will the compact dimensions. Having an 18x zoom lens included will add to the flexibility on offer, too.

Compact cameras

<a 2011

Top 10 best gadgets at IFA 2011

It's been a great year for gadgets at this year's Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) in Berlin with all kinds of surprises - from internet-connected TVs to super-sized smartphones - in the exhibition halls. Here are just 10 of the best in show...

1. Sony Android tablets

Sony's long-rumoured rivals to the Apple iPad 2 finally made their debut at IFA 2011 - and they confounded as much as they surprised. The Sony Tablet P (£499) and Tablet S (£399), both include Nvidia Tegra 2 mobile processors running Android Honeycomb OS, front- and rear-facing cameras, a USB 2.0 port and an SD card slot.

Just like the iPad 2, both tablets are available in Wi-Fi only and 3G models, but it's the clamshell Tablet P that really piques our interest. For the Sony Tablet P sports not one, but two 13.9cm (5.5-inch) touchscreens - one in the base and one in the lid.

This certainly makes it easier to stick in your pocket than most tablets and it obviously has advantages with certain applications - e.g. using the virtual keyboard or playing games where the Tablet P apes the split-screen controls of the Nintendo 3DS to a certain extent.

What's harder to get around is whether Sony will have any success persuading developers to create applications that take advantage of the split-screen. And, of course, for movie viewing it's rubbish.
<mediainsert caption="null" mediatype="brightcove" height="null" src="1139913811001" width="null">brightcove : 1139913811001</mediainsert>
2. Samsung Galaxy Note smartphone

Apple's iPhone 5 maybe imminent, but it's going to face some stiff competition from Samsung's latest smartphone, the Galaxy Note.

Sporting a massive 13.5cm (5.3-inch) display - the biggest of any smartphone so far - with a WXGA resolution of 1,200 x 800 pixels. Other crowd-pleasing goodies include a 1.5GHz dual-core processor running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, front- and rear-facing cameras, the second of which has a resolution of 8MP and can be used to record 1080p high definition video. Wow.

Weirdly, it seems that styli (styluses?) are back in vogue, with the Samsung Galaxy Note sporting an S Pen, which is ideal for accurate, pressure sensitive handwritten notes and sketches. What's wrong with the good old finger, eh?
<mediainsert caption="null" mediatype="brightcove" height="null" src="1138414830001" width="null">brightcove : 1138414830001</mediainsert>
3. Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablet

Sharing the Top 10 gadget honours with the Galaxy Note is Samsung's new Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablet, complete with a 19.6cm (7.7-inch) 1,280 x 800 WXGA resolution AMOLED display, a dual-core 1.4GHz processor and a choice of 8GB, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB of storage.

Throw in a microSD card slot and you'll be able to increase that to a phenomenal 96GB, which is probably just as well as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 offers 1080p high definition movie playback too. The Tab 7.7 also features the Android 3.2 OS with Samsung's TouchWiz user interface laid over the top.

4. HTC Titan smartphone

Continuing the trend for super-sized smartphones at IFA 2011 is the HTC Titan, a showcase for the latest version of Windows Phone 7 'Mango'.

The HTC Titan comes with an 11.4cm (4.5-inch) display. Its wide, but slim form factor enables it to sit comfortably in your hand, although it may not slip as easily into your shirt pocket. Sadly, the Titan's display resolution doesn't quite match up to its big screen billing offering just 800 x 480 pixels of resolution, although it's bright with impressive colours and good black levels.

Windows Phone 7 Mango also runs smoothly on the HTC Titan's 1.5GHz single-core processor. The best thing about the Titan is what HTC has managed to with it - adding dedicated applications and an improved camera, which enables you to shoot panoramas and includes a handy burst mode.

5. Lenovo IdeaPad U300 / U400 ultrabooks

Undoubtedly one of the biggest surprises at IFA was the arrival of the first ultrabooks - ultra-thin PC alternatives to Apple's Macbook Air that meet or exceed specs set out by Intel. Available in luxurious U300 and U400 models, Lenovo's IdeaPads are milled from a solid block of aluminium - sound familiar? - and offer a choice of 33.8cm (13.3-inch) and 35.6cm (14-inch) displays, Intel Core i7 ultra-low voltage (ULV) processors and AMD Radeon HD5470M graphics.

The Lenovo IdeaPad U300 includes 256GB of SSD storage, while the U400 offers a choice of a 256GB SSD drive or a 1TB hard disk. Battery life is pegged up to eight hours of 'productive use' and up to 30 days of standby time. The U300 and U400 are both available in a choice of Graphite Grey and eye-watering Clementine Orange colours. UK prices have yet to be confirmed.

6. Toshiba AT200 Excite tablet

If HP's recent TouchPad fire sale told us anything, it's that competing with the Apple iPad 2 isn't easy - especially when you have rivals like Samsung and Sony all trying to do the same thing.

That hasn't deterred Toshiba, which wowed IFA 2011 with its own take: the AT200 Excite - a 25.6cm (10.1-inch) tablet that also happens to be the world's thinnest, measuring just 0.3-inches (7.7mm) front to back.

Inside the Toshiba AT200 Excite, you'll find a 1.2GHz processor running Android Honeycomb, 1GB of RAM and up to 64GB of storage, which is pretty respectable.

Battery power is pegged at up to eight hours and the display has a maximum resolution of 1,200 x 800 pixels.

7. Samsung MV800 Multi-View compact camera

One of the undoubted highlights of IFA 2011 has been the launch of three new compact cameras from Samsung including the 18x superzoom WB750 and the 20MP NX200. Our pick though is the MV800 - the first compact camera to include a flip-up screen.

Flip-up screens have been a big deal on digital SLRs for a while because they're great for use in situations where a conventional viewfinder or display won't do - such as trying to get a clear view of the action which you're in the middle of a crowd, for example.

The MV800's 7.62cm (3-inch) touchscreen can be angled at up to 180-degrees to help you get the shot - the view even flips around if you turn the camera upside-down. Other goodies include a Live Panorama, which enables you to create wide-angle shots by stitching images together. Specs include a 16.1MP sensor, 5x optical zoom and a 26mm wide-angle lens. UK price? Around £249.

8. Sony SMP-N200 Network Media Player

One of the tech trends of this year's IFA 2011 has been the rise and rise of internet-connected Smart TVs, but what happens if you want to join the party and want to hang on to your existing non-Smart set?

Enter Sony's SMP-N200 Network Media Player, which enables you to do exactly that. The SMP-N200 Network Media Player includes Bravia Internet Video, which enables you to watch streaming content from BBC iPlayer, movies from Lovefilm as well as high definition and even 3D content. Naturally enough, the Network Media Player is compatible with the new Tablet P and Tablet S, erm, tablets, that Sony also launched at IFA.

9. LG PenTouch TV

As any parent will tell you, pens and TVs normally go together like small fingers and electrical sockets, so the launch of LG's PenTouch range of plasma TVs is both surprising and a little alarming.

LG's PenTouch TVs, of course, use a special light-sensitive pen that enables you to write and sketch on screen or edit and organise photos stored on your PC. But it's surely only a matter of time before Junior mistakes the 'special pen' for a ballpoint and you end up with a more permanent version of his scribbles etched onto the display.

Perhaps you can keep him or her distracted by the other things the PZ8590T can do: like enable you to watch 2D or 3D content. Or watch 2D content in 3D using a 2D to 3D conversion engine. The PenTouch TVs are available in 140cm (55-inch) and 152cm (60-inch) display sizes. There's no news yet on UK pricing.

10. Philips Cinema 21:9 TVs

These super-sized, super-expensive TVs have been a staple of IFA 2011 for a few years now but, dang it, they just keep getting better and better - which is why we have no qualms about adding them to our top 10.

Now available in Platinum and Gold versions, Philips new Cinema TVs boast an astonishingly cinema-like 21:9 aspect ratio (hence the name) 3D viewing with 2D to 3D conversion and Smart TV features that gives you access to a compelling portal of online content. Heck, you can even watch internet TV and regular TV at the same time using the split-screen viewer.

Other goodies include LED backlighting and Philips' Ambilight technology, plus a 0.5-second refresh time and a 1,200MHz refresh rate. No UK prices as yet, but we can't wait to get on our hands on them.

What are your favourite gadgets from IFA 2011? Here's a handy run-down of who is doing what...

BlackBerry PlayBook

RIM unveiled its tablet-sized BlackBerry PlayBook last September and we've been playing around with it on the show floor. Like the Samsung Galaxy Tab, it has a 7-inch display with a resolution of 1024x600 pixels and some iPad-beating extras...

Measuring 10mm thick, it runs a tabletized version of the Blackberry OS and is powered by a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 processor. There's a 3MP camera on the front, a 5MP lens on the back; plus 4G support, 3G support via Blackberry phone and 802.11b/g/n wireless.

LG G-Slate

Like Motorola's Xoom, the oddly-titled G-Slate runs the forthcoming Android 3.0 software. The new device is also 4G-ready and will debut on the T-Mobile network in the US. We await rock-solid details.

Acer Iconia Tab A500

Another smart-looking tablet that, in tech terms at least, eclipses the iPad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab. The Iconia prototype on show at CES is running Android 2.2, but will rock the tablet-specific Honeycomb OS come launch.

Like the Motorola Xoom, Acer has opted for a 10.1-inch touchscreen display here, 4G connectivity and a zippy dual-core Tegra 2 processor. There's also an HDMI out and full-size USB port, which will make this baby very versatile.

Motorola Xoom

Much of the attention at CES has been focused on the Motorola Xoom, a 10.1-inch (1280x800) tablet packing a dual-core processor, the Android 3.0/Honeycomb OS, 1080p video playback and 3G/4G/Wi-Fi connectivity.

It also incorporates two cameras - a 5MP lens on the back (capable of 720p video recording) and a 2MP front-facing camera for video chat. Makes the 1st -gen iPad look a little old hat, don't you think?

Lenovo LePad

The LePad incorporates a 10.1-inch (1280x800) touch-screen, 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and runs a customised version of the Android 2.2 OS. Available in 16GB and 32GB versions, it's 3G-only and includes a front-facing 2 Megapixel camera.

Uniquely, the LePad can be docked into a companion U1 base equipped with a 1.2GHz Intel Core i5-540UM processor, becoming a beefier Windows 7 netbook.

VIERA Tablet

The so-called VIERA tablet isn't a tablet PC that will rival the other devices here. In contrast, this Android-powered screen works with VIERA Connect (formerly VIERA Cast) to access internet services via your Panasonic HDTV. Screen sizes will reportedly range from a dinky 4 inches to 10 inches.

Samsung Galaxy Tab

Launched last year, the Galaxy Tab was arguably the first credible alternative to the iPad. At CES, Samsung announced that 1.5 million of the 7-inch Tabs have been shipped to date and that a Wi-Fi-only version will be available this year.

Asus Eee Slate

Head over to Amazon.com and you'll find that the 12.1-inch ASUS Eee Slate EP121-1A011M is now listed for preorder. A cool $999 will buy you this high-end Windows 7-powered tablet, which incorporates a Intel Core i5-470UM CPU, up to 4GB of RAM, a 32GB SSD, Bluetooth 3.0 and a 2MP webcam. The 4 Cell battery will give you 'up to 3 hours battery life', which begs the question: 'what's the point?'

Asus Eee Pad

Three different versions of the Eee Pad have been launched at CES 2011, with and without keyboards. The Eee Pad Slider combines a shallow QWERTY keypad with a 10.1-inch (1280×800) touchscreen, Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, Android 3.0 and dual cameras.

The Eee Pad Transformer, meanwhile, retains the core specs of the Slider model, above, but the keyboard is an optional attachment rather than a built-in feature.

Finally, the Eee Pad MeMo reduces the screen size down to 7.1 inches and uses a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU.

Toshiba Tegra 2 tablet

Following the embarrassing failure of its Folio 100 device, Toshiba has returned with an as yet unnamed tablet packing NVIDIA's Tegra 2 processor. Like many other tablets it boasts a 10.1-inch (1280x800) touchscreen, 5MP/2MP cameras (back/front) and Android 3.0.

Assorted others...

The tablets, pads and slates above are far from being the only iPad rivals at this year's show. A 7-inch version of the Dell Streak has been spotted on the T-Mobile website, while NEC has been showing off a dual-screen 'Cloud Communicator' at CES.

There are also tablets incoming from Notion Ink, Netbook Navigator, Vizio, MSI and Sharp, which is readying its 10.8-inch Galapagos tablet (pictured above). Elsewhere, Fujitsu reportedly has an Oak Trail Win 7 tablet in the works; Samsung has unveiled the TX100 'slider' tablet, while Archos has upgraded its 7-inch device with a faster processor.

Apple iPad 2?

No tablet article would be complete without mentioning a potential iPad 2. Judging by the specs of the Motorola Xoom and Asus Eee Pad, the original iPad now lags behind in terms of technology. Who'd care to bet against a higher resolution Retina Display and added digital cameras (plus FaceTime) in the next version? Anyone? All covered in a glitzy Las Vegas sauce.

So what's hot at this year's show?

The technology trends at CES 2010 included: 3DTV, ultra-skinny HDTVs, motion-controlled gaming (Kinect and Sony's PlayStation Move had yet to launch), not to mention early tablet prototypes, digital cameras, camcorders and iPhone-controlled Wi-Fi helicopters.

Many of the same key themes apply to CES 2011 and what you'll see here tends to dominate the technology year ahead. So here are our hand-picked highlights of this year's electronic expo...

Mobile phones

CES 2011 isn't traditionally a venue for big mobile announcements, but several tech titans have chosen to unveil new kit and new technologies. Before the show started, LG had revealed its Optimus 2X handset, featuring a dual-core Tegra 2 processor. The forthcoming Motorola Atrix 4G phone also boasts a 1GHz dual-core CPU.

Speed is just one mobile battleground for 2011; screen technology is another. The iPhone 4's 3.5-inch Retina display has set an impressive benchmark and Apple's rivals have been surprisingly slow to catch up.

That should change in 2011. The new Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc features a stunning 4.2-inch 'Reality Display'; while the LG Optimus Black incorporates a four-inch 'NOVA' screen that promises unparalleled energy efficiency and brightness.

And just when we'd got used to the idea of Super AMOLED, Samsung has rolled out a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen for its new Infuse 4G phone. Nice.

The LG Optimus Black features new Wi-Fi Direct technology

Beyond dual-core processors and improved screen technology, there are several other new features we can expect in new phones. The Google Nexus S has already reignited interest in Near Field Communications (NFC), while LG has been demoing the Bluetooth-rivalling Wi-Fi Direct. 4G connectivity will also become more of a standard feature, using either HSPA+ or new LTE networks.

Tablets & Slates

Last year, the tablet PC market was embryonic – we still had our fingers crossed that the Courier prototype was real. It wasn't. In fact, the tablet market didn't really kick off until Apple launched the iPad in April.

Since then we've seen Dell, Archos and Toshiba dip their toes in the waters, while Samsung has turned tech heads with its 7-inch, Android-powered Galaxy Tab.

This is only the start. If tablet PC announcements at CES 2011 are anything to go by, 2011 will be the year of the tablet/slate/pad. Motorola, for example, has unveiled its smart-looking Motorola Xoom, a 10.1-incher running an early build of Android 3.0 (aka Honeycomb). Not to be outdone, LG is offering sneaky peeks at its G-Slate, which also runs the new Android OS.

Other manufacturers keen to jump into the tablet market include Asus, which has launched four Eee Pad and Eee Slate tablets at CES, and RIM, which is readying its iPad-esque PlayBook. Lenovo, meanwhile, has a 10-inch 'LePad' device.

Asus has announced four Eee Pad and Eee Slate tablets

Acer is again showing off its Iconia tablet, but it's not the dual-screener that we saw last year. Instead, the A500 model features a single 10.1-inch display, Android 2.2 and Nvidia's dual-core Tegra 2 engine inside.

Android 3.0

While Android mobile phones wait for the latest OS upgrade to version 2.3 (Gingerbread), Google has been showing off its tablet-friendly Gingerbread OS (Android 3.0). If you buy an Android tablet in 2011, make sure it runs this...

Video: Google previews Android 3.0 Honeycomb

3D

The 3D love-in at CES shows no sign of cooling. Like it or not, want it or not, 3D technology continues to be shoehorned into new TVs. Panasonic has predicted that 3D is an 'unstoppable force' and that a third of all new TV purchases will be of 3D models by 2014. Its new 3D plasma TVs look stunning.

But what sort of 3D will we be watching? Sony is betting big on Active technology and its HX929 telly certainly offers impressive pictures thanks to the built-in X Reality engine and edge-lit LED.

The HX929 (above) is just one of 27 Bravia sets launching this year. Sony also has a new BDP-S780 3D Blu-ray player and is readying a 3D consumer camcorder for a spring release.

In contrast, LG is taking a different tack and has its corporate eye on 'passive' 3D. Its latest Infinia range of 3D televisions are using the technology, which uses polarised glasses rather than the more expensive Active Shutter system.

Then there's Toshiba, which is showing a range of glasses-free, autostereoscopic 3D TVs at CES. Don't scoff. The technology is getting better. Sophisticated view point overlay technology means you'll even be able to move your head while watching the 3D content.

Of course, 3D isn't just restricted to HDTVs. Both Sony and LG have unveiled 3D-capable laptops, while LG is demoing a 4.3-inch mobile touchscreen with a 480 x 800 pixel resolution that can be used for watching 3D videos or playing 3D games sans specs, much like Nintendo's 3DS.

Finally, how about 3D surround sound? LG's HX996TS home cinema set-up delivers an audio experience worthy of your local multiplex.

OLED

Every year we ask the same question: "what's happened to OLED?" The answer? It's still coming. To whet our appetites, Mitsubishi has been showing off a 155-inch OLED display at CES, while LG has vowed to expand its own small line of organic LED sets beyond the current 15- and 31-inch models.

Computing

If you were expecting big things from Steve Ballmer this year, like us you'll have been disappointed. Microsoft's keynote speech at CES was notable for what the company didn't announce rather than what it did. The existence of Avatar Kinect, for example, was leaked before Ballmer took to the stage.

ADDED FUNCTION: Cut and paste functionality is coming (finally) to Windows Phone 7

Instead, with one eye on the rapidly expanding tablet market, Ballmer revealed that the upcoming version of Windows would be fully compatible with mobile ARM processors such as the Tegra 2 and Snapdragon range. But seriously: how hard would it have been to do a tablet running the Windows Phone 7 OS right now?

And speaking about Windows Phone 7, Microsoft has sold over 1.5 million handsets since launch and plans to add copy/paste functionality into the next update. It's a good start, although these numbers won't have Apple or Google quaking in their boots.

Beyond Microsoft, Intel announced its new Sandy Bridge processor architecture in the shape of Core i5-2500K and Core i7-2600K desktop CPUs. AMD, meanwhile, tore the wraps off its new Fusion chips, which combine CPU and GPU processing on a single die.

What did you think was the most exciting announcement at CES 2011? From swivel screens on tiny netbooks, to full size laptops with touch capability, we take you through the best touchscreen laptop options.

1. Samsung NB30 – £268

Samsung's netbook range has always impressed us, and the NB30, boasting tactile touchscreen technology is no exception. It's easy to carry, and the touchscreen gives it a near tablet feel, although the screen doesn't twist around to give the true form factor.

The 10.1-inch screen has a 1,024 x 600-pixel resolution, and it's sharp and bright, and there's no shiny Super-TFT screen coating causing irritating reflections in bright light. What's more, this is the cheapest touchscreen PC you're likely to find.

Buy the Samsung NB30 touchscreen netbook

2. Vye V-91015 Touch Screen Netbook – £379

There are a number of twistable tablet-style netbooks on the market featuring multi-touch screens but, at under £400, the Vye V-91015 is one of the cheapest around. The 10-inch screen rotates from the standard laptop form, to enable it to be carried like a tablet, which is where the multi-touch display comes into its own.

It compromises on specs a little, and there's only 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive at your disposal, but you do get a decent touchscreen netbook that weighs only 1.3kg.

3. Asus EeePC Netbook T101MT – £442

If you're looking for a true tablet feel, but with the convenience of a laptop, then the Eee PC T101MT is a fantastic choice. The 10.1-inch touchscreen is tactile, and Asus's built in software helps you get the most from your touchscreen netbook.

ASUS Eee PCs are a pedigree of netbook, with fantastic build quality backed up with supreme portability. The Intel Atom N450 is adequate for most basic web surfing and YouTube video watching, and the 320 GB hard drive is one of the biggest you'll find on any netbook.

4. Asus T91MT – £459

If you've been bitten by the tablet bug, but don't want to do without a keyboard and mouse, then Asus' smaller netbook offering, complete with multi-touch screen will be right up your street.

The T91MT has a petite 8.9-inch screen, which is no bigger than most of the Android tablets that are swamping the market this Christmas. However, instead of Android, you get Windows 7 and a full keyboard. The multi-touch is fantastic, enabling you to fold the screen back and use a range of gestures, as well as using the supplied stylus.

5. Packard Bell Butterfly Touch LX.BL502.011 – £529.95

Continuing the run of touchscreen laptops to arrive on the scene in the first half of this year, Packard Bell has released the Butterfly Touch, which offers full touchscreen usability and up to a claimed eight hours of battery life in a convertible-tablet, clamshell design.

Weighing 1.6kg and featuring an 11.6-inch WXGA screen, it promises to provide ample mobility for frequent travel use. Operating as a standard clamshell laptop when opened, the screen can then be turned 180 degrees and folded down over the keyboard for full tablet use.

6. Toshiba Satellite U500-1EX – £584.97

Toshiba's Satellite U500 Series is aimed at mobile professionals and previous models have impressed us with their blend of style, comfort and quality. The Satellite U500-1EX comes with an impressive range of features and only a couple of flaws that hold it back.

The U500's impressive touchscreen usability and strong range of features lifts it above other laptops of a similar calibre, with the touch-sensitive screen and media bar offering a great means of control. Many of the biggest gaming behemoths will set you back over £2,000, but it's not always necessary to spend that kind of money.

Many of the best gaming laptops we've looked at here cost far less, and while they might struggle with the latest games on the highest settings, they're still formidable gaming machines.

Of course, packing in the latest hardware not only costs money, but it adds weight. The Alienware M17X weighs in at over 5kg, so don't expect to be carrying it around with you. Weigh up the benefits, and you can walk away with the perfect machine for your gaming needs.

1. There's plenty of power under the hood for the avid gamer, while the Intel Core i5 processor provides plenty of performance for your average consumer.

The real selling point of this machine is its price, and this much power for under £1,000 makes it a very affordable option, especially when the likes of an entry level Alienware M17x, providing very similar performance, will cost you around £500 more.

The GX740 does provide fantastic graphical punch, and the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 is exactly the same as you'll find in an entry level Alienware M17x just, as mentioned before, for £500 less. Similarly, there's also 1GB of dedicated memory, ensuring a smooth ride.

Read our full MSI GX740 review

3. Some students will look for portability, so that they can take their laptop to the library or to lectures, and this means buying something lightweight.

Anything less than 2.5kg should be fine to carry around all day, and this isn't a hugely difficult target.

However, living the student life means that others will be looking for a big screen and decent performance for watching DVDs, instead of having a separate TV. This is great for the cramped conditions of student halls of residence, but portability and media performance are normally polar opposites.

We've found the best laptops for students and listed them below, but before you buy, think about what it's going to be used for so you can make the right decision.

1. At only 1.4kg, it's a pleasure to carry around and the small form factor makes it very easy to fit into almost any bag, which makes it great for lectures, although not so great for movies and entertainment.

The 11.6-inch screen is bright, crisp and clear, and the screen is LED-backlit, which is resource-light on the battery. The Acer Aspire 1410-74G25n sets a very high bar, and the excellent battery life will be a clincher for many buyers.

Read our full Acer Aspire 1410-742G25N review

2. It was a difficult sell, especially when 3D content was thin on the ground – no 3D telly channels available, no 3D gaming, no 3D Blu-ray.

A year on, the flag-waving for 3D TV is just as vigorous. Sky is inching towards the launch of its first 3D channel, while Eurosport has announced that a dedicated 3D sports channel is on the way. The PlayStation 3 will finally get its Blu-ray 3D update by Christmas, while Blu-ray 3D players and HDMI 1.4-compliant cables are becoming readily available.

Every HD TV-builder worth its salt now has a premium 3D ready range with a premium price tag to match. But only a few stand truly out from the crowd. Philips, for example, has upgraded its 9000-series HD TVs to make them 3D friendly. But it's the company's unique Cinema 21:9 model that catches the eye.

Similarly, while LED backlighting is becoming the norm, LG's LEX8 'Nano LED' 3D TV uses a thin film punctured with tiny holes to more evenly diffuse the light from the LED array. Meanwhile, Sharp has evolved its quad-pixel Quattron model to include 3D compatibility.

There's also more of an interest in 'glasses-free' 3D TV this year. Philips has long championed the lenticular technology and has another impressive demo at IFA this year. Toshiba is also reportedly taking an interest in the glasses-free approach. Nintendo is using similar lenticular lenses in the forthcoming 3DS handheld, while engineering firm Rockchip has incorporated the technology into a 3D tablet PC prototype.

Internet TV cometh

Not only will your next TV be 3D ready, it will also be able to access the Internet, play YouTube videos, display your Twitter account and stream content from the BBC iPlayer. You can already buy HD TVs with this technology built-in. However, the web widgets are often sluggish, rudimentary and hardly comparable with the internet experience you can get on a computer or smartphone.

That's going to change. Web-connectivity has the potential to change the way we watch television in the future. Google, for example, is attempting to integrate its own Google TV solution into TVs, while Apple's relaunch of its Apple TV product takes a different technology tack. Both, however, have the same aim in mind: to enable users to search, browse and stream content, on demand to their living rooms.

Content is key. Apple is well positioned with iTunes; Panasonic is ambitiously expanding its Viera Cast system; while Sony's forthcoming Qriocity portal will offer music and movie streaming. Google TV has the potential to be as successful as Google Docs or as forgettable as Google Wave. The fact that it runs the Android OS opens up a whole range of dizzying possibilities as apps can be the gateway to video and audio content, games and utilities.

Tablet PCs and iPad-jostlers

The Apple iPad has set the benchmark for every tablet PC, slate computer and smartpad to follow. It's not perfect, but the announcement of iOS4.2 will add new features and, while the current iPad might not feature a built-in camera for 'FaceTime', Apple will undoubtedly include it in version 2. Steve Jobs is the undisputed master of leaving his audience wanting more.

So rival tablet PC builders like Samsung, ViewSonic, Toshiba, Acer, LG and others don't have very long to design, test and launch their own keyboard-less devices. Samsung has taken the lead with The Galaxy Tab. Compared to the iPad, it has a smaller, lower resolution screen, but the good-looking tablet offers several advantages, including a memory card slot, two integrated cameras and Flash 10.1 support.

ViewSonic unveiled its ViewPad 7 and ViewPad 100 models at IFA, with the latter offering a dual boot feature for Android and Windows 7 Home Premium. Toshiba also revealed a tablet, dubbed the Folio 100, while Sony launched an updated version of its Reader device with a touch-sensitive display. There are more iPad wannabes to come.

Gadgets, gadgets, gadgets

Last year, IFA was much more fragmented and there were many more identifiable tech trends: wireless HD streaming; improved screen technologies like OLED and LED backlighting; web-connected TVs; 3D TVs; eco-friendliness and the end of the megapixel wars.

It's obvious from our coverage this year that 3D TVs and 3D Blu-ray players have dominated the show, with web connectivity and a new breed of tablet devices close behind. As for other gadgetry, several of the tech giants have launched new mini camcorders – Sony outed the Bloggie Touch, Samsung debuted the HMX-T10 and Toshiba has been showing off the Camileo S30 and P20.

This week in music-making tech

Our colleagues over on MusicRadar publish in-depth music-making hardware and software reviews, tutorials and features powered by industry expert magazines Computer Music and Future Music.

Here are MusicRadar's top music-making tech picks this week, including reviews of the latest gear, iPad music software development news, and a helping hand for anyone who wants to get into remixing.

Reviews of the week

Beat Kangz Electronics Beat Thang Virtual

An Akai MPC-style software groovebox

Audio Damage Tattoo

Famed for their FX plug-ins, Audio Damage delivers its first instrument: an old-school drum machine

Audiofile Engineering Wave Editor

A Mac-only app that lets you edit, process and master your audio files

Intermorphic Mixtikl 2

A bewildering but superb-sounding generative music app

Plus!

Propellerhead CEO discusses iPad music software

Ernst Nathorst-Böös says that Apple's tablet is "pretty exciting"

Best music tech gear of the month: review round-up

Catch up on the DAWs, synths, FX, controllers, mics, interfaces and mixers reviewed on MusicRadar in February and March

How to make it as a remixer

Alex Blanco reveals the tricks of the trade

CES 2010: CES 2010: The view from the show floor

This has been a great CES. We've seen some fantastic products (if nothing truly, truly mindblowing) while reports of lower attendances because of the economic climate weren't reflected on the show floor. Getting around the major booths was a something of a mission; the place was absolutely packed on the first two days of the show.

Many of those in the industry that we've spoken with feel they've had an extremely successful show with one declaring that there was a buzz about this CES that he hadn't experienced for a while.

On the show floor there was a real noise about two TVs in particular – Samsung's super-cool LED 9000 series and Toshiba's forthcoming Cell TV, which has so much high technology inside it that it's difficult to believe it will actually be on sale (albeit for a whole lot of money). There's a real feeling that Samsung has really nailed it this year with its line-up and the TVs are nothing short of stunning.

Sony didn't amaze (though we do like the look of the Bravia LX900) but it's moving in the right direction – finally truly embracing non-proprietary technologies in many products (like SD, for example) and bringing out properly interesting products like the Dash internet viewer.

As we said in our piece about the movers and shakers at CES, any overriding theme has to be 3D, even if we're unsure as to how quick any take-up will be. Also buzzing around the show were a whole bunch of Linux and Android-based netbooks with non-Intel processors.

This show really proved just how many manufacturers are deadly serious about providing an alternative to the old Wintel philosophy and with manufacturers such as HP and Lenovo publicly demonstrate their support for non-Windows based netbooks.

Microsoft has been a bit of a loser at this show and the general feeling is that the Ballmer keynote was the biggest disappointment seen at CES for a long while, managing to turn the good news around Windows 7 sales into something lukewarm and fizz-free.

We're getting a bit fed up with keynotes from the likes of Microsoft and Intel that include precious little substance and instead preach Bill Gates' old "we'll have many devices and they'll all be integrated" mantra. Get over it.

Intel won't be quaking in its boots as a result of the efforts of others, but the buzz at CES hasn't been about Core i5 and i3 or Atom (though its new Atom processors are far improved). Instead, people have been talking about those producing other silicon.

Qualcomm has had a superb show with Snapdragon devices debuting all over the place, while it's not been too shabby for Nvidia either – some of the stuff that will be powered by Tegra 2 will amaze. The green team are definitely worth watching during 2010.

3D Vision is still a bit of a gimmick, but the industry seems to feel that 3D gaming will go mass-market and Nvidia's partnerships with several laptop manufacturers and more monitor manufacturers shows that companies are happy to put their weight behind the concept.

From being a gimmick this time last year, 3D is now here to stay.
