Past Wordle answers — every solution so far, alphabetical and by date

Memorizing all of the past Wordle answers is nearly impossible – after all, there have now been more than 1,700 of them. And even though Wordle answers do now repeat (see below), it can still be helpful to know what's gone before.

That's partly because the early evidence is that answers are not all that likely to appear twice; we've only had three repeats since Wordle changed its strategy in early February, so new words are still more common than old ones.

Repeated answers

As you probably know, Wordle is now repeating answers. I've added an asterisk next to any solutions that have appeared more than once. If any are repeated twice I'll add a second asterisk and so on. I've also included a standalone section that lists all repeats. Jump to it here.

But even outside of that, it can be interesting to see what happened in the past. Plus, knowing the kind of words that might appear can help you decide what to play today.

What you need then, is a list of past Wordle answers, and that's what I've made for you here. It's organized by month and you can simply search the page to see whether the word you're thinking of has already been used. It won't be a guarantee that it won't appear again, but it might help.

So pick one of the best Wordle starting words, take a look at today's Wordle answer if you need to and keep this list close when you're playing.

I've first organized the answers alphabetically, and then by month starting with the most recent. You can use the menus on the side (on desktop) or above (on mobile) to jump straight to the month you want. This year, 2025 and 2024 are on this page, and there's a second page with 2023, 2022 and 2021 on it (and the alphabetical list is on both pages).

If you're trying to find out whether a specific word has already been an answer, there are easy ways to search for it:

Past Wordle answers: Days with two answers

On which days have there been two Wordle answers?

One of the key things about Wordle is that everyone gets the same answer each day. Or is it? There have been four occasions when the game has served up two different solutions, causing no end of consternation among players.

The first two were victims of the New York Times' purchase of the game in February 2022. The NYT removed around a dozen words that it decided were too difficult for players, or that were in some way controversial.

However, at that time people could play either via the NYT's games site, or via the original Wordle website created by Josh Wardle. And unfortunately, the changes made by the NYT didn't always filter through correctly to the original version.

The result was that on February 15, 2022 some people got AROMA and some the much harder AGORA for puzzle #241. Then on March 30, the same thing happened with STOVE and HARRY for game #284; the NYT thought people would only consider HARRY to be a name, and not a verb (as in to harrass), so it removed it.

The problem reoccurred in May 2022. On May 10 (game #324), the NYT removed the word FETUS in the wake of the US Supreme Court's decision to repeal Roe vs Wade, deeming it too controversial. Instead, most players got SHINE. The next day, some players got GECKO while others received BUTCH, due to the NYT's servers not yet having reset for everyone from the previous day's change.

Today's Wordle answer (game #1781) is… LATCH.

Wordle's completed its trifecta of difficulty in successive days here: repeated letter, followed by ER word (with a repeat too) and now a too-many-answers puzzle.

LATCH is not the absolute worst of these, but it's pretty high up the list. You can make eight different solutions by changing the first letter here: WATCH, PATCH, HATCH, MATCH, NATCH, BATCH, CATCH and LATCH itself. To the best of my knowledge only -IGHT (with 10 possibilities) is worse, while -OUND also has eight options.

Perhaps surprisingly, it's not playing super-tough: its average score is 4.0, so well below that for PUFFY (4.4) and RISER (4.3). I suspect that's because the first letter here is an L, which appears in many popular start words (including the 'Bot's SLATE). This will have given people a head start in working out which letter was at the beginning of the answer, whereas if it were a less common one such as the B in BATCH or W in WATCH it will have required more guesses.

And as it happened, I scored a three myself. My opening SANER had left a sizeable pool of 99 words, but my follow-up of DOILY was lucky and reduced that to seven. What's more, it gave me that yellow L.

I never actually faced the ATCH trap myself, because that L immediately removed all of the other possibilities. Instead, my choice was between a disparate group including LAUGH, FATAL, PAPAL and CABAL (all of which I thought of) and HALAL and WALTZ (which I did not).

LATCH was guaranteed to give me a four at worst, but my good fortune continued when it turned out to be the answer itself. I'll take that!

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1780) was… RISER.

It wouldn't take a genius to predict that RISER would be another difficult Wordle — after all, it's an ER word, and they're almost always a pain to solve. We've not had one for a while; SOBER, 32 games ago on 2 April, was the last, but that was an easier one on account of starting with an S.

Here, the S was in the middle of the word, but worse still there's also that repeated R to further complicate things. Oh, and there are alternative options in the form of WISER, MISER, RIPER, RIVER, RIDER and RISEN, too.

All of which adds up to an average of 4.3 — not quite as hard as yesterday's PUFFY (4.4), but still far above the norm for the game.

The fact that I scored a three is therefore cause for celebration (for me, I don't expect anyone else to care), but truth be told my start word did most of the hard work. SANER is of course an ER word itself, and also contains an S — a combo which reduced my options to seven immediately.

These were LOSER, POSER, WISER, MISER, RISER, USHER and ESTER, and I came up with all of them. I couldn't find a word that would guarantee me a four, but LIMBO — which at worst would leave me a 50/50 — came closest.

Inevitably, that was the scenario that played out, with a choice between RISER and WISER the one that faced me. And here, as on Sunday, I guessed correctly.

What is Wordle?

If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm in 2022 and is still going strong in 2026.

We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4a. Answers are never plural.

4b. …unless they are. There have been a couple of plural words that don't end in an S or ES, including FUNGI (game #439), ATRIA (#1478) and TEETH (#1551). But S and ES plurals are definitely outlawed.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10a. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions…

10b. …unless they are not. That's because the NYT has added in some of its own words which weren't in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.

10c. Plus, the NYT has now started repeating answers that have already appeared in Wordle. We have no idea how often it will do this, so you'll need to be on your guard.

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4a above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.

Does anyone still use a DIGITALCLOCK? I know they do in TV shows and movies — especially when the storyline needs to indicate the drudgery of the daily grind. But in real life?

My memory was instantly jogged by today’s search, back to simpler times and this piece of tech’s most-used feature: the SNOOZE button.

Today, I use my phone as an alarm clock and set three alarms to nag me awake. The first is the ideal waking time if I was a properly functioning adult, the second is the “you need to wake up now” alarm, and the third is the “if you have not cancelled this alarm you are going to be late” alarm.

Ask Jeeves quietly shuts down after nearly three decades, after pioneering conversational web search long before ChatGPT and Gemini

Today, ChatGPT and Gemini work in similar ways

With AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini available, it's now easy to run web searches like "what are the best sights in Rome?" or "how do you fix a leaky shower?", but this natural language format was actually pioneered almost 30 years ago — and by a search portal that just closed down.

The portal was Ask Jeeves, later rebranded to Ask.com, and it opened fully to the public on June 1, 1997. As XDA Developers reports, what remained of Ask.com has now been shuttered by its current owner, InterActiveCorp (IAC).

If you were online just as the internet was taking off, you'll remember Ask Jeeves and its eponymous butler character — named after the valet Jeeves in the PG Wodehouse stories. The idea was to ask questions and get answers from the growing amount of information on the web, not just look for topics like "sports" or "movies".

At the time that Ask Jeeves launched, Google was still a prototype university project, and it offered something genuinely different to the search engines and web directories of the time (including Yahoo, AltaVista, and Lycos).

'Deeply grateful'

Google of course entirely changed the web search landscape, and after its initial success, Ask Jeeves struggled. It was renamed Ask.com in February 2006 as Jeeves was removed from the search portal, although the butler character did reappear on the UK version of the site between 2009 and 2016.

IAC took over operations in 2005, and has now made the decision to close the search engine down to "sharpen its focus" on other areas. The official end date for Ask Jeeves and Ask.com was May 1, 2026.

"We are deeply grateful to the brilliant engineers, designers, and teams who built and supported Ask over the decades," says IAC. "And to you — the millions of users who turned to us for answers in a rapidly changing world — thank you for your endless curiosity, your loyalty, and your trust. Jeeves' spirit endures."

It's interesting that as Google and other AI-led companies try and make web search like a natural conversation again, the site that first pioneered the approach is closing. Ask Jeeves really was ahead of its time, back in 1997.

I managed to get away with a big mistake today — guessing “guile” when I already knew that the U could not be the second letter.

Fortunately, getting lucky earlier in the game with FIFTY (it could have been “witty” or any number of other words) gave me space to screw up.

May 4th is, of course, “May the Fourth/Force be with you” day but “forest” seems to be stretching the pun a little too far, unless we are discussing the Forest Moon of Endor, Takodana, which we are patently not.

Instead, this was a search for trees found in woods and forests, made more complex by some tricky twists and turns to connect the letters.

The longest word of the game, EUCALYPTUS, was my final find — not the most obvious of trees, so I’ll forgive myself for not seeing it sooner.

I couldn't help thinking that today’s task was about fish, but this was something that I instantly dismissed after spotting the letter Q on the board.

Despite this very heavy clue I still failed to see QUIRKY until the very end of the game and needed a hint to get going.

I’m putting today’s slowness down to tiredness from a big night last night rather than anything STRANGE or PECULIAR.

Some good news for Elon Musk: FCC ruling means 'faster speeds, lower costs, and greater reliability' for SpaceX Starlink and other satellites

The FCC has relaxed low-orbit satellite restrictions
It works out to a 7x capacity increase for internet satellites
The move is welcomed by SpaceX and Amazon

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has delivered some good news to Elon Musk's Starlink and other satellite internet providers, by removing several key restrictions on how much energy satellites can transmit to and receive from ground stations.

Technically, these are the Equivalent Power Flux Density (EPFD) rules set in the 1990s, as PC Mag reports. In simple terms, it means Starlink and others will be able to operate a much denser array of satellites for providing services to customers.

We're talking as much as a sevenfold increase in satellite network capacity, which should mean a connection that's more reliable and faster. However, it's going to take a while before satellite companies will be able to take advantage.

"This is a major step toward enhancing the satellite broadband experience for millions of Americans by enabling faster speeds, lower costs, and greater reliability," says the FCC. "This change could also unlock more than $2 billion in economic benefits for the American people and up to seven-fold more capacity for space-based broadband services."

The rules were introduced to prevent radio signal interference between satellites in non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) — also known as low-Earth orbit — from affecting geostationary satellites (GSO) higher in orbit. Now, both NGSO and GSO satellites will be able to share more of the communications spectrum.

It's a change that's been welcomed by Starlink's David Goldman, as well as Brian Huseman, a Vice President at Amazon — another company looking to build out a network of internet-providing satellites with Amazon Leo.

As Gizmodo reports, Viasat is one of the GSO satellite companies that has warned that the move could potentially lead to more interference without proper regulation. Viasat has also raised concerns about Starlink getting a monopoly on this particular market.

The view of the FCC is that modern satellites are designed to share spectrum more effectively than they did in the past, and the 1990s rules no longer apply. Starlink, owned by SpaceX, will no doubt be keen to get its next batch of satellites launched.

Having never partaken in a LINEDANCE — unless doing the moves to the Superman Dance at a holiday park in the 1990s counts — my initial thoughts after getting SHUFFLE was that this was a search for words that meant slow movement.

After getting KICK I was completely confused and a hint of COASTER still left me none the wiser.

The turning point was seeing dance and then LINEDANCE, but I still labored my way around the board in an uncoordinated fashion.

Subsequently I have learned that all of these words describe types of line dance rather than moves as such. All wonderful fun, but with my dodgy knees I doubt I’ll be doing the PONY anytime soon.

I somehow pulled this game out of the fire and kept my 2026 win streak going, but it could not have been closer.

I had dozens of words in my head that included an I, N, and O and the positions of those three letters kept eliminating them, so when I tapped in "inbox" I thought I’d got it and the green letters would be bouncing. With just a handful of letters left to play with, I finally arrived at GOING.

Happy Lei Day, Hawaiians.

Having never been to Hawaii — the closest I’ve got is a shirt I owned in the late 1990s — I feared I would struggle my way around today’s board, but the reality was that it could not have been easier.

It’s a testament to how much Hawaiian culture has permeated around the globe that I was familiar with all of today's words, with the exception of MACADAMIA — which I did not know had a strong link to the islands (I thought they were Australian). It was also a very tricky word to piece together and took me a couple of attempts to get in the right order.

So-called 'surveillance pricing' in grocery stores, where the cost of items is changed dynamically based on a variety of factors and shopper data, is now widespread in the US — and the authorities in Maryland have had enough.

As reported by The Guardian, Maryland Governor Wes Moore has signaled his intent to sign the Protection from Predatory Pricing Act into law after the state legislature approval, and the act will come into effect at the start of October this year.

It means stores and third-party delivery apps won't be able to adjust pricing on the fly, based on what they know about the buyer, or on other factors such as the time of day. The aim is to ensure consumers pay "a transparent, consistent price at the register", according to Governor Moore's office.

Without this protection in place, surveillance pricing — also known as dynamic pricing or personalized pricing — could lead to two people with the same items in their shopping cart paying different prices when they check out.

Consumer rights groups have welcomed the new legislation, but there are concerns that it doesn't go far enough — and that stores and apps will still be able to apply personalized pricing by using alternative methods that are less visible to consumers.

As Common Dreams reports, while stores must keep prices fixed for at least one business day, there's some ambiguity over how baseline prices and 'discounts' can be set and manipulated. Loyalty and subscription programs are also exempt from the new rules.

Other states may now follow the lead set by Maryland. There are similar bills under consideration in Colorado, California, Massachusetts, Illinois, and New Jersey, and the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is also currently running its own investigation into surveillance pricing and its impact on consumers.

"We urge other state legislatures considering personalized pricing legislation to build in stronger consumer protections and avoid loopholes that weakened this bill," Grace Gedye, senior policy analyst at Consumer Reports, told Common Dreams.

Worried consumers are also hoping that happens. Over on Reddit, responses to the practice have ranged from "this is horrifying" to others calling it "truly dystopian". Others noted that Maryland's law includes exemptions for loyalty programs and promotional offers, which means the same practice could still effectively happen in reverse through selective discounts.

The phrase “wet blankets” is used to describe someone who soaks the enjoyment out of a situation.

After failing to spot “killjoy”, the most obvious word connected to this theme, on the board I decided that we were looking for a more literal connection to wet blankets which could only mean CONDENSATION.

The two Zs helped me find DRIZZLE and from here on it was a synonym search, although among them AEROSOL was not one I expected.

‘It disappeared right in front of my eyes’: some Google Messages users are fuming after a bug erased some of their most prized chats — here’s what a Google product expert recommends doing

The issue is still ongoing, but a Google expert has offered tips to fix it

Google Messages users have spotted a bug that’s randomly deleting old and new chats, and their complaints about the issue are spreading like wildfire online.

Users in the r/GoogleMessages forum are sharing their experiences with disappearing chats, but it’s difficult to pinpoint if there's a pattern between the vanishing messages. One user noticed ‘huge chunks of messages’ going missing from chats, while others have reported seeing entire conversations disappear.

Despite users trying to take matters into their own hands, the issue persists — one user also recalls a moment where a message ‘disappeared before [their] eyes’. Samsung Galaxy phones seem to be bearing the brunt the most — the Samsung A52 and Samsung Galaxy S21 have been mentioned on Reddit — but some Google Pixel users are also experiencing similar problems.

But where’s it coming from? There’s only one thing users have linked it to, and that’s the shutting down of Samsung Messages which is now entering its phase-out stage, forcing users over to Google's chat service.

Since the issues started to spread, users have been seeking ways to prevent this from happening, including checking their trash bin, clearing cache, and reviewing chat history back up, but messages are still going missing without reason. It’s led frustrated users to swarm Google’s support page to seek further advice, and the company has cleared the air slightly.

In a reply to a user query, a Google product expert shared that the Samsung Messages and Google Messages transition is in fact causing this: “While it is frustrating, the ‘vanishing’ of messages during this transition is often a sync and re-indexing delay rather than a permanent deletion, especially if they are missing from both apps”. They also detail that RCS incompatibility and synchronization bugs during the Samsung Messages-to-Google Messages crossover are also contributing to the ongoing issue.

That said, the Google expert followed by offering some workarounds. Firstly, they recommend waiting 48+ Hours if you only switched from Samsung Messages or have just noticed the issue. They also suggest leaving your phone on a charger with Wi-Fi connected so that the indexing process can finish.

Alternatively, you can use what the expert refers to as the ‘Sync Force’ trick, where you’ll need to set Samsung Messages back as your default SMS app, restart your device to open Samsung Messages, and then wait 2-3 minutes for it to load the local database. Once this is done, you can switch back to Google Messages and set it as the default again.

"How I will be able to rely on this app moving forward?"

Looking at the collective responses, it’s clear that the transition to Google Messages from Samsung Messages hasn’t been the smoothest process, and the bug has come at a very inconvenient time for those who are just getting used to navigating the Google Messages reins.

Though this is a minor re-indexing delay, those who have gotten comfy with using Samsung’s service are still very unhappy with the forced migration. A friend of our Staff Writer, Isaiah Williams, has been a long-time user of Samsung Messages, and the switch has hit them hard, who shared the following words with us:

"I was already bothered by the forced switch from Samsung to Google Messages and the loss of organizational features I loved as a small business owner, such as text categories, but I never expected to watch my messages fully disappear. They were there one minute, gone the next, and even after my attempts at troubleshooting, restarting, checking the archive and trash folders, spending ages navigating the cluttered app design and needless AI features, I have yet to fully resolve the issue. I am simply left questioning how I will be able to rely on this app moving forward when basic functionality seems so lacking."

Today’s theme didn’t leave much space for guess work as it was obviously about angling.

The speed at which one attacked this game then depended on how many words you knew connected to the world of fishing and seeing as I know next to none this was limited to the really obvious ones of HOOK, REEL and the spangram TACKLE.

After a hint gave me the fourth word, one I really should have known in LURE, I made my way around the board at a similar pace to a day spent on the riverbank snoozing and waiting for a catch.
