Samsung Jet S8000 review

Billed as 'better than the iPhone'... but can it even compete?

The Samsung Jet S8000 - is it a budget alternative to the iPhone?

Samsung's latest flagship handset, the Samsung Jet S8000, was released to massive fanfare around the world, and the General Manager for the UK said that he thought it was better than the Apple iPhone 3GS - but can a non-smartphone really compete?

The Samsung Jet S8000 is billed as 'Smarter than Smartphone', a direct comment on the fact that while it uses Samsung's proprietary feature-phone UI, the TouchWiz 2.0 OS, it still packs some mean hardware under the hood.

And we're not just being complimentary of the specs by saying that, we're talking an industry-leading 800MHz processor powering the performance from a dinky frame (108.9 x 53.5 x 11.9mm) on a 3.1-inch AMOLED screen.

The samsung jet s8000 in the hand

While it's hard to see where this might rival the iPhone in the mobile phone market, bar having a touchscreen, it's certainly cheaper than most of its smartphone rivals, with users getting a free phone and paying less on their contract and up to £150 less to pick up the handset SIM free.

The first thing that hits you when you pick up the Samsung Jet S8000 is just how small it is. While the dimensions will give you an idea just how dinky it is, it's very hard to describe just how diminutive this feels in the hand.

This is a double-edged sword for the phone: on the one hand, the Samsung Jet S8000 fits very well in the pocket and is a real pleasure to carry around compared to some of the other chunka-phones on offer.

However, on the other hand, the plastic chassis and the 110g weight count against it, as it feels a little lightweight and, dare we say it, cheap in the hand.

We like the shiny red prismatic effect on the back of the phone though, and the AMOLED screen just screams colour no matter what you're displaying on the screen, but there's something about the build quality that doesn't shout 'we've spent £5 million on a global marketing campaign for this handset'.

The samsung jet s8000 inside and out

We're not saying the plastic-feel of the Samsung Jet S8000 is a bad thing, as it's certainly very pocket friendly which is obviously very important for a number of people these days. It's just that a little bit of brushed aluminium or stronger materials would have probably added to the overall appeal and feel of the phone.

That said, the phone is well designed and all the buttons are within easy reach thanks to the smaller proportions. We're utterly delighted to see another 3.5mm headphone jack stuck on the top, and Samsung has managed to do this without adding a huge amount of depth to the device.

However, when using headphones plugged into the Jet S8000 it's very difficult to use the full QWERTY keyboard in landscape mode and watching video is a little tricky too, as the jack is a little too far to the left in our opinion.

The samsung jet s8000 headphone port

Actually, this is something Samsung does very well (packaging things all together in a compact handset) and makes us wonder why a company like HTC keeps maintaining it can't do a headphone socket and a flash.

But we think you'll find that with the Jet S8000 Samsung has managed to do all the above AND improve the camera to a dual flash version... this shows there's room for improvement, HTC (although well done for putting a 3.5mm jack on the Hero).

USB CHARGER: The Samsung Jet S8000 uses a standard micro USB charger

The Jet S8000 is one of the first Samsung phones to make use of the Cubic-style menu interaction (more on that later) and in honour of this, it has placed a 3D-cube style button on the front which carries the same sort of functionality as the menu button on S60 devices.

It's a little large and garish for our tastes, but at least it brings some unique style to the front of the phone and, let's be honest, this is a phone Samsung hopes people will pick up for the way it looks, as much as the hardware. The likes of 2GB of internal storage and 30fps VGA video camera will act like gadget sirens (the ones from Greek mythology, not on top of police cars).

The samsung jet s8000 width

It's an interesting idea to place the button that calls up the spinning cube next to the camera button, but one that works surprisingly well, with very little confusion as we might have predicted before trying it.

It's got a slightly similar footprint to the Palm Pre in being deceptively small, which means it fit snugly in the hand rather than dominating it in the style of the iPhone 3GS, although it would have been nice to feel a little more weight or strength in the chassis.

11. Briiliant screen for pictures and videos, nice 'cover flow' and with a 'proper' headphone jack great for music. Camera pretty good, nifty 'stitch together' facility for panorama shots, would have liked a dedicated camera button rather than a shared rocker switch.

Browsing is OK as is email which displays HTML mail but prefer email on my Windows 6.5 O2 Ignito/HTC Diamond. Easy connectivity with Bluetooth and WiFi, 3G/3.5G connectivity good.

Games, don’t play them so can’t comment.

GPS not brilliant but free Route 66 mapping is a bonus with address search by free text or post/zip code, although route planning is on the free version turn by turn navigation licence is by purchase, having said that for holidays a month licence is about £3/E5 I think

Photocontacts dissappointing in that only one phone number can be assigned

No copy/cut and paste but Word/Excel/PDF viewer is OK. Predictive text is quite good and learns frequently used words.

Oh yes and the phone is quite good as well.

10. This was my last phone and if I hadn't promised it to my mum when my contract upgrade arrived, I'd still have it! For me, this phone has been absolute DIAMOND! Because my hobby is making ringtones and wallpapers for friends/family, the internal memory allowed me to have ALL my stuff for people to see without the need to shell out for an SD card.

Not just that, but that screen made my images look beyond fabulous and having three homepages? It was nifty being able to choose between Sam, Dean, and Justin Hartley LOL

Texting on the Jet was so, so easy and I could have a message typed out in seconds, which saved a lot of time and irritation. Not just that, but web browsing was a breeze and when you spend several hours on a National Express coach, pretty much stopped the boredom before it began!

Suffice to say I love the Jet like a member of family :-D

8. I bought the Jet last November and loved it,agreed the touchscreen can be difficult and fiddly at times and a pain to see in the sunlight.

Sadly since 6 weeks ago it's been in repair for constantly muting the microphone then ending the call in the space of 10 seconds from placing and receiving a call.in this time it has been 'Bounced 3 times back to samsung repair.I hope they replace it this time or give me a refund.

1 feature that is never mentioned in reviews is the 'Emergency Texting'(by pressing the volume button down 3/4 times while home screen is locked you can send a pre written text message to selected contacts saying that you need help,if only samsung would pair it with their gps, therefore also letting the recipient knnow where you are it would be a fantastic and possibly life saving feature.

7. Samsung jet is full of problems. Add to them this one:

A MAJOR problem for Samsung jet is that the screen freezes in hot humid weather.

This is an extremely big problem for this phone.

How can Samsung offer such a product???

The samsung service center in Alexandria Egypt "Union Group" say they know nothing about it. Me and other 2 friends have the same problem. Samsung has to admit it and find a solution.

6. I have to say i love this phone, the internet browsing is very easy and quick, the screen is vibrant and very responsive. My only dislike is when you scroll down your text messages it bounces all over the place. The music's a good volume and you can record from the radio. Very easy to use as well

5. I agree totally with everything here- although on the Three (3) network in the UK, be warned that you only get access to the mobile version of websites, which together with the terribly slow G3 speed and constant disconnections, makes internet browsing pretty miserable.

So, be warned, if you want tis primarily for internet access, for anything other than reading emails on the move, look elsewhere !

Otherwise, nice phone especially at £200 SimpFree from Carphone Warehouse - Jan 2010.

GPS is hilarious as well - it gets me right in the middle of the Menai Straits.....!!! It is only accurate to within 3 kilometres....so good job I'm not lost in Iraq.

Finally, the WiFi is a joke....if you have an encrypted wirless LAN...forget it. And, customer service have no idea either ! But, given the awful browsing experience, it doesn't really matter....for instance, watching YouTube videos, harks back 5 years ago on dial-upp....blocky, low res image, with constant buffering. Awful !

4. This is arguably one of most well rounded and appealing feature mobile devices on the world market. For those who do not require a smartphone operating system and wish to customise their device and prefer a straightforward "out-of-the-box" experience this fast device is a compelling alternative to smartphones.

3. Missing copy-paste(in text editor) feature is very disappointing. I never expected that this feature could be missing, so I did not do a check before the purchase. I have contacted support, not received a reply till now. I expect samsung to to implement the feature in next firmware upgrade, let us see what happens

1. I've said it before elsewhere on this site, but I'll say it again - don't buy this phone, its awful. Multiple problems and annoyances, and so far from not only the iphone, but also any android phones that Samsung should hang their heads in shame.
